Arsenal fans rip into Henrikh Mkhitaryan after opening clash against Newcastle

[ad_pod ]Arsenal’s performance against Newcastle on Sunday afternoon left a lot to be desired as the Gunners struggled for much creativity before Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s opener. One of the reasons was because of Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s inability to pick the lock of the Newcastle defence. He made some promising progressive runs but regularly gave the ball away in a display which left a host of supporters incredibly angry with his performance.Fans took to Twitter during the game to lay into the Armenian who missed Arsenal’s last competitive match because of security reasons. One individual said the attacking midfielder should just retire whilst another said he was pathetically poor.Others decided to focus on the £200k a week wage he’s earning at the club as a fan claimed he was robbing a living. A further tweeter said they couldn’t wait to get him off the books at Arsenal.[ad_pod ]Mkhitaryan scored six goals in the Premier League last term whilst also claiming four assists. Rangers signing Andy King is a big boost to Steven Gerrard

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Leicester City central midfielder Andy King has joined Rangers on a season-long loan, and it could be a deal that makes sense on so many levels.

What’s the story?

The 30-year-old has become Steven Gerrard’s tenth signing of the summer window, as the gaffer looks to add to his midfield options. King’s Rangers move was confirmed after Foxes’ boss Brendan Rodgers sanctioned the switch.

Having made the temporary switch to Ibrox, the Welshman adds even more quality to a strong crop of central midfielders already at the club. With Joe Aribo, Steve Davis, Ryan Jack, Greg Docherty and Glen Kamara all being tried in the middle of the park this season, Gerrard already has a strong bunch to call upon.

The greatest player ever to grace the Scottish Premiership is revealed in the video below…

With King out of contract at the end of the season, it could be a ‘try before you buy’ style deal for the Gers, just as they did with Davis.

A good bit of business

While some fans weren’t too pleased with the 30-year-old being linked to the club, it’s actually a very smart deal on several levels.

The Gers will be hoping to play Europa League football until at least Christmas time again this campaign, so will need plenty of bodies. Having six first-team central midfielders, not including the versatile Scott Arfield and Andy Halliday, means Gerrard has plenty of good options to rotate.

This will be absolutely crucial if important league fixtures come just a few days after trips across Europe.

Watch Rangers Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

As well as adding depth to the squad, King’s experience of winning a league title could prove invaluable. Of Gerrard’s squad, only Alfredo Morelos, Davis, Filip Helander and Allan McGregor know what it takes to win the top league in a country.

King could impart his knowledge of being an underdog at Leicester as the Gers do battle with the more-fancied Celtic for the Premiership title this season.

The move also has a similar feel to it as Jermain Defoe’s switch. Both have enjoyed good Premier League careers but struggled to find consistent playing time as they aged, and Defoe has proven he still has plenty to offer since moving north of the border. King could be the next.

A low-risk loan move for a Premier League winner is the ideal signing for Gerrard, adding depth, quality and experience all without spending a penny, just like he did with the swoop for Defoe.

Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil is likely to stay at the club, which is good news for the Gunners

[ad_pod ]

It is being reported that Mesut Ozil will not be leaving Arsenal before the end of the summer transfer window. Whilst he may not be the player he once was, it would be silly for the Gunners to let him leave at this point.

What’s the story?

The former Germany international is yet to feature this campaign. Initially, he was stopped from playing for security reasons after an incident on June 25th, but he was available for this past weekend’s match against Liverpool at Anfield, yet he was not even selected in the squad.

As such, there had been an indication that his Gunners future was in the balance. However, the 30-year-old’s agent Dr Erkut Sogut has revealed to Turkish-Football that he will be staying at the Emirates Stadium this summer.

Check out fan reaction to Liverpool 3-1 Arsenal in the video below…

Positive news, but sell next summer

It is fair to say that Ozil is not the player he once was. Last season’s record of just two assists and an average WhoScored rating of 6.74 in the Premier League is not what you would expect from a man who was once the club’s record signing.

However, it wasn’t always like that. In the 2015/16 season, he created a staggering 19 goals for his teammates and averaged a huge 7.66. That just goes to show that he has those kind of big performances in his locker.

Looking at Unai Emery’s squad, there is a lack of creative players in midfield. Other than Ozil, only Dani Ceballos can be described as somewhat of a playmaker. Granit Xhaka, Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi are all better known for their industriousness.

The on-loan Real Madrid man’s starting debut against Burnley, in which he provided both goals in a 2-1 victory, indicates that he is best placed to take up a playmaking role at the moment, but there will be times when he is either not fit or having an off day.In these situations, the former Schalke man would be the ready-made replacement, especially against defensive teams that need unlocking.

Ceballos will likely be returning to Spain next summer, and Ozil will be 31 by then as well. That would be the perfect time to let him go and bring in a long-term successor. For now though, they would be naive to let him leave, which is why this report is good news for the Gunners.

Everton summer signing Djibril Sidibe has been a little underwhelming so far

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Marco Silva’s transfer record as Everton manager has, on the whole, been largely successful, but one newcomer is yet to get going yet.

The Portuguese manager has made improvements to the Everton squad in both defence and attack since his arrival, and he has used the funds at his disposal to add strength in depth throughout the squad.

One player the Toffees brought in over the summer who is yet to make his mark is Djibril Sidibe, after he signed on a season-long loan from Monaco on transfer deadline day.

The right-back arrived with a good pedigree, having earned 18 caps for France and made 19 appearances in the Champions League, reaching the quarter-final in 2017 and knocking out Manchester City along the way.

However, there have been notable disappointments already despite it being less than a month since he signed.

Firstly, he arrived injured and missed Everton’s first two games of the season, which is less than ideal if he was intended to be cover for Coleman, who only returned from a serious leg break earlier this year.

Things haven’t worked out on the pitch yet either, and he could struggle to dislodge the Irishman from the team. Coleman has been able to bring out the best in Richarlison, providing a base for him to venture forward into the box whilst also ensuring safety at the back, with two clean sheets in four league games so far.

Richarlison’s three goals this season show the pair have continued their effective partnership from the end of last season, and if Sidibe doesn’t get up and running soon then he could find his chances limited.

Silva handed him his debut away at Lincoln in the League Cup, and although Sincil Bank can be a tough environment to visit, a French international should really be performing better than Sidibe did.

He was at fault for the first goal – which was conceded after a matter of seconds – and fans didn’t appear overly impressed on Twitter.

It’s clearly still early days, but it would be accurate to describe him as underwhelming so far. Everton fans and management alike could be thankful that he wasn’t signed on a permanent basis unless a big improvement is shown.

Barcelona fans react to Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s quotes on Philippe Coutinho

Marc-Andre ter Stegen joined Barcelona from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2014 and ever since that moment the German has been improving steadily.

After the departure of Claudio Bravo in 2016/17, he became the team’s no.1 goalkeeper and has remained in that role ever since.

Watch Spanish Football Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Recently, Ter Stegen did an interview for T-online in Germany and spoke about a variety of different topics, ranging from his national team to Manuel Neuer to Philippe Coutinho.

But it was his words concerning the Brazilian that really caught the attention of many Barcelona fans.

Ter Stegen said that he hopes Coutinho has fun in Bayern Munich, where he was loaned out this summer, and also mentioned how he is a great player but also a great guy overall. This statement made many fans call for the captain’s armband to be handed to the German.

Currently, there are four captains at the club: Lionel Messi, who is the first and designated one, and then Sergio Busquets as the vice-captain, and finally, Gerard Pique and Sergi Roberto are the third and fourth captains respectively.

But some fans seem to think it’s Ter Stegen who deserves this great honour.

Southampton starlet Jake Vokins could be a future challenger for the left-back role

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In The Pipeline series, which takes a look at some of the most promising young talent either linked with clubs or emerging from their academies…

When Matt Targett left Southampton in the summer, the Saints supporters would’ve been forgiven for thinking the squad looked a little light in the left-back department.

As a result of Targett’s £17m move to Aston Villa, Ryan Bertrand was left as the only senior figure on the left side of defence, but it has become apparent that Ralph Hasenhuttl has somewhat of an issue with him.

Summer signing Kevin Danso started the Saints’ outing against Brighton at left-back with Bertrand out injured, although Hasenhuttl later confirmed that he would’ve made that change anyway even if the former Chelsea man was fit.

And then the summer recruit was selected at full-back once again at home to Manchester United, but his afternoon was cut short when he was given his marching orders for two bookable offences.

However, Danso is a natural centre-back, whilst Hasenhuttl also played Pierre-Emile Højbjerg at left-back in the EFL Cup win over Fulham, and praised the Dane for his performance in the role.

In that respect, it seems as if the Austrian boss has some options to replace Bertrand at left-back for now.

However, neither of them are natural figures for the role, but when it eventually comes down to finding a replacement for Bertrand, Southampton could have a potential future challenger for the position in Jake Vokins.

The 19-year-old has been impressing in the Southampton academy for a while now and grabbed two assists from left-back in the recent Under-23 outing against Liverpool, a game which the Merseysiders won 4-3.

The Guardian highlighted Vokins as a player who could soon make the step up at Southampton, whilst the club themselves are seemingly keen to keep him around and develop him having handed the full-back a contract extension just last year.

With Targett no longer on the South Coast and Bertrand seemingly not in Hasenhuttl’s good books, Vokins could potentially be a future challenger for the role if he keeps up the good work.

Newcastle midfielder Jonjo Shelvey blew his opportunity against Liverpool

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Having made a high-profile move to Liverpool back in May 2010, there were undoubtedly high hopes for the kind of career Jonjo Shelvey would go on to enjoy.

After breaking into the Reds’ first-team as an 18-year-old, former Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson remarked he was very impressed with the kind of progress the midfielder was making.

“What is good to see is that a young player we have invested money in is proving to be worth his money and is proving to be the future prospect we think he is. He is a confident young man but he’s modest and he knows there is a lot of work to be done before he can hold his hand up and say ‘Look at me, what a good Premier League player I am’.” Roy Hodgson, December 2010

Fast forward almost a decade later and Shelvey has failed to match the kind of potential many thought he had. Now in a Newcastle shirt, the Englishman featured in the Magpies’ opening two Premier League games of this season, but was dropped to the bench following the side’s successive defeats.

Watch Newcastle United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Sean Longstaff’s untimely injury however gave Shelvey the perfect opportunity to stake his claim once more on Saturday. The stage was set for him. An away game at his old stomping ground of Anfield and the chance to silence the doubters – his former boss at Swansea, Garry Monk, infamously slammed him for being “lazy”. Unfortunately, the six-cap England international fluffed his lines and proved Monk right.

A game against the European champions is never easy, but the 27-year-old really didn’t help matters for his team. Per SofaScore, he lost possession 12 times and was dribbled past twice as Liverpool’s midfield overwhelmed him and Isaac Hayden.

He made zero tackles in the entire game despite the Magpies being on the back foot for the majority of the clash, whilst his trademark long passes went awry too – just three out of the eight he attempted were successful.

Shelvey’s miserable afternoon was best summed up when he frustratingly tried to lob Adrian from inside his own-half, thus meekly surrendering possession. It spoke of someone who still hasn’t matured at the highest-level, and when Longstaff makes his comeback from injury, it could mean a place on the bench yet again for the once promising prospect.

Football FanCast correspondents: 10 major weekend talking points

[long_read]

[ad_pod ]

Following the return of Champions League and Europa League football in midweek, domestic football returned to our screens over the course of the weekend.

With the Spygate saga still lingering fresh in mind as Derby County travelled to Leeds United, Manchester City playing their first league match since suffering a stunning defeat away at newly-promoted Norwich and Liverpool travelling to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea, there was plenty for the Football FanCast team to sink their teeth into.

Our team of regional correspondents kept a close eye on things and have since offered their views on some of the major talking points to emerge.

Here’s what the FFC team have had to say…

[snack_break title=”Underdogs challenge La Liga’s status quo”]

The La Liga weekend was defined by the underdogs.

Currently, Athletic Bilbao are sitting pretty at the top of the table and are level with Real Madrid, who quickly brushed away the claims of any sort of crisis with a narrow yet assertive 1-0 victory away at Sevilla, something they hadn’t achieved since recording a 3-2 win in May 2015.

Newly promoted Granada are just one point off the top after their sensational 2-0 victory over Barcelona.

At this point, Ernesto Valverde is definitely feeling the fire underneath his feet and will have to act quickly if he wants to save his job. His team currently sit ninth in the table with just seven points from five games played. With all the claims the Spanish domestic league is a two-horse race, the new season is definitely shaping up to present an enthralling counter-argument.

How long can the underdogs offer stark resistance to its impervious titans?

[snack_break title=”City blitz doubters”]

Just a week after being on the wrong end of a monumental upset in the Premier League, Manchester City rediscovered their groove big-time with a mammoth victory over Watford. The naysayers were out after Pep Guardiola’s side suffered a shock 3-2 defeat at Carrow Road to Norwich, and there would undoubtedly have been some nerves in the home camp heading into Saturday’s fixture.

So what did the Citizens need? A rapid start to blow away all the doubts. In the grand scheme of things, David Silva’s goal in the opening minute of a contest that ended 8-0 seems fairly insignificant. But it proved to be a catalyst for how City demolished Watford. Quique Sanchez Flores’ men had overwhelmed Arsenal to earn an impressive 2-2 draw last time out, and may have fancied adding to the champions’ woes.

Instead, Silva settled any nerves, and set City on their way to a triumph that proves the title race is far from over even at this early stage.

Vijievan Jeevathayalan – Manchester correspondent

[snack_break title=”United construct their own crisis”]

It was just bound to happen wasn’t it? After all the talk and debate surrounding Manchester United’s lack of options up front, the club now currently have all three of their strikers out with various injuries.

Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood were both ruled out for the clash at West Ham, and so Marcus Rashford had yet another opportunity to stake a claim for being the side’s undisputed number nine.

Instead, he looked toothless like the rest of his United teammates, and was forced off mid-way through the second-half with a suspected groin injury. The defeat against Manuel Pellegrini’s side is bad enough, but the lay-off to Rashford could have major ramifications for the Red Devils over the coming weeks. The fact Jesse Lingard had to come on and play up front said it all really.

A mess of United’s own creation, and with potentially dire consequences yet to come.

Vijievan Jeevathayalan – Manchester correspondent

[snack_break title=”Role reversal for Villa’s defenders”]

On a week where it was reported that Dean Smith would have a £20m+ January transfer kitty to improve his faltering frontline – one that had made them the joint-second lowest scorers in the Premier League, for once it wasn’t they weren’t liable for throwing away all three points against a ten-man Arsenal.

Villa’s defence had been the one shining light in their disappointing top-flight homecoming having recorded two clean sheets in five matches, putting them then-tied for the best in the league.

Bjorn Engels felled Matteo Guendouzi for their first error to give the Gunners a way back into the game before his partner Tyrone Mings made a mistake to let Calum Chambers and then Tom Heaton should have done better for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s winner.

As soon as one problem looks seemingly out of sight, another crops up as the Villa boss still waits for his playoff-winning side to click in the big time.

Lewis Blain – Midlands correspondent

[snack_break title=”There’s no place like home, unless you’re Leeds”]

Leeds’ home form has all of a sudden become a sticking point for the Whites. Marcelo Bielsa continues to keep his selection the same and in a game with Derby where they should have been out of sight, this was one of the factors to blame.

Eddie Nketiah and Helder Costa were forced to watch on from the bench as Jack Harrison was unsuccessful with five crosses while Bamford hit the post in a torrid afternoon in front of goal.

In their last two outings at Elland Road, they’ve had over 60% of the possession but only picked up a solitary point. If anything summed up their misfortune in front of their own fans, it was Mateusz Klich’s missed penalty in the second half on Saturday.

Something has to give, particularly when they are the hosts. Perhaps that’s finally handing Costa and Nketiah a start in the league. After all, Leeds have now only won one of their five home matches in all competitions this term.

Matt Dawson – Leeds correspondent

[snack_break title=”Barren Benteke”]

Impulse forces us in the direction of Christian Benteke after his latest Crystal Palace showing.

The Belgian could have wrapped things up when one on one with Rui Patricio, but his confidence is well and truly on the floor – the 28-year-old eventually got his shot away, but hit it straight at the Portugal international after what felt like an age to ponder his next move.

Palace’s club-record signing also had the ball at his feet when on a breakaway with Wilfried Zaha in the 95th-minute, but some sloppy decision making gifted possession back to Wolves before Diogo Jota stole a point for his side at the depth.

With four goals in his last 53 Premier League games, while earning £120,000-a-week, the former Liverpool man is definitely a problematic player for the Eagles right now, to say the very least.

Billy Meyers – South London and South Coast correspondent

[snack_break title=”Baggies bouncing back”]Two familiar trends, if you can call it that, continued over at the Hawthorns on Sunday – they still remain the only unbeaten side in the Championship, but too their ability to gain a result from going behind.West Brom have picked up 16 points from their opening eight league matches with 15 of those – nearly 94% – gained from a losing position. That’s all but one game where some sort of comeback has been required in order to pick up some points. And yet they are unbeaten for doing so. Quite extraordinary.Whether that’s a good trait to have remains to be seen; you’d imagine sooner or later that’ll have a more damning effect, but for the time being, Bilic’s Baggies are showing why they can be considered promotion challengers – even more so after coming from behind twice against Huddersfield Town, sticking four past them on their way to three points.Lewis Blain – Midlands correspondent

[snack_break title="Liverpool show mark of champions"]

Liverpool showed they can win without playing close to their best, and did it away to a top-six side, which many fans and pundits alike consider a big win to maintain the early lead over Manchester City.

The fact the Reds had just three shots on target and 45% possession highlights the fact they weren’t at their best, but positive contributions from Adrian and Joel Matip, who was named Man of the Match, shows that even players who aren’t as well regarded as others are performing to a high standard.

Jurgen Klopp’s side has only one clean sheet from six in the league, but the defence has been resolute when required, and proving they can win ugly should serve them well over the course of a title challenge.

Kealan Hughes – Merseyside correspondent

[snack_break title="Are Spurs lacking commitment?"]

Tottenham Hotspur’s defeat against Leicester City on Saturday means they are still without an away win in the Premier League since they beat Fulham in January, and you have to wonder whether the mentality and commitment of certain players could be brought into question for the goals they are shipping on their travels. For example at the weekend, their back four consisted of Danny Rose, Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen and Serge Aurier.Rose was reportedly left behind for the pre-season tour to Asia during the summer in order to find a suitable move away. The Daily Mail said Vertonghen was left out at the start of the season by Pochettino due to fitness issues and, of course, his contract runs out next summer. Alderweireld is in a similar boat to his Belgian compatriot and Aurier was heavily linked with an exit during the previous transfer window, before questioning the lack of competition he has for the right-back spot.It is hardly an ideal situation for Mauricio Pochettino that the quartet appear to be the club’s first-choice backline right now, and then you have Victor Wanyama, another player Spurs were reportedly keen to offload during the summer, who came on for his first appearance of the season and put in a disastrous cameo at the King Power, too.Pochettino’s team selections in the next few weeks could be worth keeping an eye on.James Beavis – Editor [snack_break title=”Emery’s substitutions pay dividends “]Some Arsenal fans may not want to admit it, but Unai Emery got his substitutions spot on against Aston Villa. The former Sevilla boss was put in a difficult position against the Villans when Ainsley Maitland-Niles was sent off for two bookable offences. However, the introduction of Calum Chambers, Joe Willock and Lucas Torreira swung the match in the Gunners’ favour, with the former scoring the second equaliser as his team eventually won 3-2.Sections of the fanbase that will blame the 47-year-old for his starting line-up, but it is the mark of a good manager when he is able to recognise his mistakes and correct them during the game.Perhaps his rotation policy did him a favour this time around.Football games are not just decided by the 11 players on the pitch, but rather the 18 in the matchday group and the squad on the whole. Here, Emery deserves credit for using it to his advantage.Jon Radcliffe – London correspondent[/long_read]

Barcelona fans had mixed reactions to club’s reported interest in Raheem Sterling

It’s not really a surprise when Barcelona are linked with big-money transfer targets.

But the latest story that Daily Mail broke out suggests that the Catalan giants could try and swoop for Manchester City’s 24-year-old winger, Raheem Sterling.

And that’s not all, actually. They go on to say that the club will only up their interest in the English winger once Xavi Hernandez has assumed his role as their coach since Sterling is actually the Spaniard’s wish for the future.

Watch Spanish Football Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Naturally, such big claims prompted a lot of reaction from the Barcelona community on social media and many of the fans swarmed Twitter in order to voice their opinions.

Many of them seem to think this is actually brilliant news and are delighted with it.

But there are also some fans who believe this is a bad idea and some were even going as far as bashing Xavi for his reported interest in Sterling.

It seems that they can’t make up their minds at the moment and you can see some of their replies down in the collection of tweets below:

Real Madrid’s loanee Achraf Hakimi was brilliant vs Slavia Prague

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Loan Watch series, which takes a closer look at those players who are aiming to galvanise their careers away from the spotlight of their parent club.

Real Madrid did not really have a dream start to their new 2019/20 Champions League campaign.

On the contrary, after two games played, Los Blancos have been subject to one humiliating defeat and one surprising draw, conceding a total of five goals in the process.

This puts them dead last in the group table and they will have a lot to work on in the future fixtures if they even want to survive until the knockout stages.

But one Real player, albeit a loanee, is having the time of his life away from the Spanish capital.

Watch Spanish Football Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Achraf Hakimi is a Real Madrid Castilla youth product who was sent on a two-year loan deal to Borussia Dortmund in 2018. And, on Wednesday, he was the star of the show as the German team beat Slavia Prague 2-0.

Both of those strikes came courtesy of the 20-year-old Hakimi, who produced a rather brilliant display to lead his team to victory.

Apart from those two goals, he also tallied a total of four shots, one dribble, two long balls and had 70% passing accuracy at the end of the night.

Overall, it was a really good performance and it earned him the Man of the Match award according to Whoscored, as he got a rating of 8.39.

Of course, back in Madrid, Zinedine Zidane already has a good right-back option in the form of Daniel Carvajal but Hakimi should definitely be on his radar for the future.

Watch Lionel Messi and Gareth Bale answer the internet’s weirdest questions in the video below…

This performance surely would have grabbed the Frenchman’s attention but the young Moroccan is actually thriving on his loan spell as a whole.

So far, he has played a total of 38 games for Dortmund and scored six goals while also assisting eight in the process.

And just this season alone, he already has one of each in six appearances in the Bundesliga.

If he continues performing like this, it will be only a matter of time before Real have him in their starting XI.
