Outscored Clarke: Sunderland lodge bid to sign Dijbril Cisse 2.0

Regis Le Bris will hope he can press on with more new signings from the Sunderland hot-seat shortly, with only two free transfer purchases the current business in through the door at the Stadium of Light.

The French Black Cats boss will be apprehensive concerning some outgoings on the flip side, with Pierre Ekwah being touted to potentially move onto Udinese now, but a new striker could well become a priority very soon for the new manager.

Regis Le Bris for Lorient.

He will know that Sunderland fans were crying out for a talismanic forward to lead the line last season, when many a Black Cats centre forward spurned their chance to become a hero up top, with a bid now even fielded for this striker target.

Sunderland bidding for their next Dijbril Cisse

According to a report by French outlet Foot Mercato, Le Bris could use his connections to his native country to win his new side a potent attacker, with SM Caen striker Alexandre Mendy now eyed up.

A bid has been made for the potent 30-year-old's services, as per the report, with negotiations now underway between Caen and the Wearside outfit over a potential deal getting over the line.

Sunderland linked striker Alexandre Mendy in action for Guingamp.

The Black Cats will hope this bold swoop of Ligue 2's top goalscorer from last season pays off in a similar fashion to their pursuit of Dijbril Cisse, who also lit up the French leagues, before making himself a household name to English football fans with Liverpool and various other clubs, including Sunderland.

Mendy even outscored Jack Clarke's 15 strikes for last season for his current employers, as Le Bris becomes eager to make his new-look Sunderland side a far more tantalising watch this campaign to come, with a new fan's favourite coolly tucking away chances.

What Mendy can offer Sunderland

Cisse also arrived into the English game with a reputation for being a deadly finisher in his native country, closing out his long association with AJ Auxerre – before venturing over to play on new soil for Liverpool – with a mightily impressive 90 goals from 169 games.

Mendy has been as potent for Caen as Cisse was at the start of his career before becoming more known, with 65 strikes tallied up from 142 games in total.

His best goal output for his Ligue 2 employers came just last season as well, with 23 goals tucked away from 40 contests in all competitions, as the 30-year-old now potentially itches for a new challenge before his playing days are up.

Sunderland are crying out for a striker that can turn games on its head by scoring a strike out of the blue, with Nazariy Rusyn only helping himself to two second-tier goals all of last campaign, whilst Mendy tore up his respective league.

Le Bris will have everything crossed that the 30-year-old goal machine can be as impactful in such a short space of time like Cisse was when he arrived at the Stadium of Light on a season long loan deal on the eve of the 08/09 campaign – instantly endearing himself to the Wearside faithful with his passionate, goal-laden displays.

The now retired 42-year-old would help himself to 11 goals from 38 games in total for his loan side, with one of those strikes even coming against Sunderland's arch nemesis, Newcastle United in front of a packed home faithful which saw the Black Cats win 2-1.

Acrobatically celebrating his opener in this contest, as can be seen watching the clip above, Cisse is remembered for being a top buy that made Sunderland entertaining to watch.

Former India and Bengal seamer Ashok Dinda retires

He played 13 ODIs and nine T20Is, picking up 12 and 17 wickets respectively

ESPNcricinfo staff02-Feb-2021Ashok Dinda, the former India and Bengal seamer, has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket. The 36-year old played 13 ODIs and nine T20Is between 2010 and 2013, picking up 12 and 17 wickets respectively. He enjoyed a longer and more productive domestic career, taking 420 first-class wickets in addition to just over 300 white-ball scalps. After having represented Bengal for over a decade, Dinda had moved to Goa ahead of the ongoing domestic season which has been curtailed by the coronavirus pandemic. He was the second-highest wicket-taker for Goa in the 20-over Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy with five strikes, but it came at the cost of 10.08 runs an over, as they suffered an early exit.Related

Dinda: 'No one could've removed me because of my performances'

“I have had my run. I have a few injuries and they have been troubling me,” Dinda said. “I played three games for Goa this season and picked up five wickets, but I think I have done what I could have as a player. I am almost 37, and I have been playing first-class cricket for 15 years, so it’s time to go.”I am a cricketer, so I will stay connected with cricket. I have a few options to stay connected with the game. I haven’t thought about what I will do. It’s too early. So maybe I will take a decision before the next season, once things get better [in terms of the pandemic].”

Dinda took at least one wicket in the nine T20Is he played, with his career-best 4 for 19 coming in a handsome victory against Sri Lanka in Kandy in 2012. He played for the Delhi Daredevils, the Pune Warriors, the Kolkata Knight Riders, the Royal Challengers Bangalore and more recently, the Rising Pune Supergiants in the IPL, picking up 69 wickets in 78 games at an economy rate of 8.20.In the Ranji Trophy, he was a stalwart for Bengal, grabbing 339 wickets. Among seamers, only R Vinay Kumar, Pankaj Singh, Basant Mohanty, Madan Lal and Ashish Winston Zaidi have more wickets than Dinda in the Ranji Trophy.Speaking to PTI, Cricket Association of Bengal president Avishek Dalmiya said, “The contribution of Dinda is enormous. He is one of the best fast bowlers we have produced. He will be remembered for his ability to take wickets and win matches, bowl long spells and his never-say-die spirit.”

Following the success of productions such as Welcome to Wrexham, Sunderland Till I Die and the All of Nothing series on Amazon Prime, it has been revealed that Manchester United legend Rooney has welcomed cameras into his world of coaching.

Some Plymouth supporters have not taken kindly to that news, suggesting that the club are about to become a “laughing stock”, but Rooney has revealed how the documentary will work and why everyone stands to benefit from it hitting the small screen.

WHAT ROONEY SAID

Rooney has told : “It has to be at the right times. Anything which we feel could affect players on matchday, that access won't be there. I think it happens nowadays anyway, at most clubs they have their own internal cameras almost everywhere as well so I don't think it's any different for the players, or a shock to have cameras around. Once they get used to that it's not an issue. I think it's really interesting for the fans to get a better understanding.

“Of course, the fans see the players go out onto the pitch and play in the games but it's actually seeing that preparation of what goes on throughout the week before matchday, and the work the players are putting in and how much the players care, how much we all care to get results.”

Ex-England captain Rooney went on to say, with it yet to be revealed which streaming service will secure rights to the show: “They are not around every minute of every day. There will be set days which we give them to film. It's not going to be a massive difference for the players or for the staff to deal with. I think it will be good for the club. I know there is big brands looking at it to take it, where that goes we will have to wait and see.

“I think for the club, financially certainly it will help, which is really important for us with where we are at, but also if I'm a fan of the club I think it's something I would be really intrigued to watch. Obviously, you have to take everything into account and we felt the positives were way bigger than the negatives.”

Alongside Duran: Aston Villa in talks to sell £100k-p/w star open to exit

With rumours still going regarding Jhon Duran's potential move to West Ham United, Aston Villa are reportedly in further talks to sell another one of Unai Emery's players who is open to an exit.

Aston Villa transfer news

The Villans have been one of the busiest sides around Europe this summer, making up for the sale of Douglas Luiz and Moussa Diaby by welcoming the likes of Jaden Philogene, Ian Maatsen, Amadou Onana and many others in a blockbuster window. They may not be done there on the transfer front either, with others potentially joining Luiz out the exit door.

Reports have been circling for a number of weeks over Duran's potential move to West Ham, though the Hammers are yet to match Villa's valuation of the forward after talks. He's certainly made his loyalties clear as well, throwing up the famous Hammers sign in a recent Instagram Live to add fuel to the fire that is the current transfer saga.

The striker isn't the only one open to an exit either. According to Sky Sports' Lyall Thomas, Aston Villa are also in talks to sell Diego Carlos to Fulham this summer, with the defender open to leaving Villa Park just two years on from his arrival. Earning a reported £100,000-a-week, the Brazilian's departure would free up space on Villa's wage bill, making their willingness to sanction a sale no shock.

With just two weeks until the Premier League campaign gets underway, it may well be a deal to keep an eye on.

Injury has disrupted Carlos' Aston Villa stay

Carlos initially arrived as the solution in Steven Gerrard's defence, before suffering a disastrous opening-day Achilles injury at the beginning of the 2022/23 campaign. And since then, he has struggled to emerge as the main man at the heart of what is now Emery's backline, starting just 20 games in the Premier League last season.

Now 31 years old too, Carlos arguably doesn't have long left at the top of his game and a move to Fulham represents one of his final opportunities to make his mark on English football once and for all. Earning the praise of Emery despite his limited minutes, the Spaniard said via the Shropshire Star when previously assessing his defensive options:

“They are trying to demand themselves to play I want them to. It’s not easy because to play with your build up and my ideas with the ball to avoid high pressing and they are committed to do it. I’m very happy. Diego Carlos will be very important for us, as well. Those three centre-backs, for me, are amazing."

Joe Root: 'A week like this doesn't define us as a team'

Root put his side’s failure down to their first-innings collapse when they went from 74 for 2 to 112 all out

Valkerie Baynes25-Feb-2021Joe Root says England’s 10-wicket defeat to India inside two days of the third Test won’t define his team, who also fell out of contention for a place in the WTC final as a result. On a day when 17 wickets fell in a match described by his opposite number, Virat Kohli, as “bizarre”, Root, the England captain, claimed 5 for 8 with his part-time offspin as India, resuming on 99 for 3 were bowled out for 145, a first-innings lead of just 33.But his first Test five-for was small consolation when England managed just 81 in their second innings as Axar Patel claimed another five-for and 11 for the match and R Aswhin passed 400 Test wickets with his seventh for the match.Related

“It sums up the wicket up slightly, if I’m getting five wickets on there, then you can tell it is giving a fair amount of spin,” Root told the host broadcaster after the match. “It’s nice to contribute but disappointing it’s in a losing cause.”That left India needing just 49 runs in their second innings and they got there with ease, Rohit bringing up the winning runs with a six off Root. While debate raged long into the night about the state of a pitch on which scarcely more than five sessions constituted a match, Root put his side’s failure down to their first-innings collapse when they went from 74 for 2 to 112 all out, having won the toss and chosen to bat first.”A week like this doesn’t define us as a team, we know what we’re capable of doing and we’ll come back and use the hurt of this week as motivation going into that last game,” Root said.”It was a very challenging surface,” Root added later in his press conference. “We are bitterly disappointed we have missed an opportunity more in that first innings than anything, having been 70-odd for two we had a real chance. In hindsight, if we had even got 200 that would have been a very good score on that wicket and the game would have been completely different.”It is frustrating and something we have to learn from – we have to get better and we have to keep finding a way to score runs on surfaces like this but it is very challenging, you could see that from the scores throughout the whole game – even guys that are more used to playing on turning wickets.”Joe Root claimed career-best figures•BCCIRoot also defended England’s selection of just one frontline spinner in Jack Leach, who took 4 for 54 in India’s first Innings as spinners accounted for all but two of the 30 wickets to fall in the match, with Moeen Ali sent home to rest and Dom Bess overlooked for this and the previous Test.”We looked to try and play our best side in terms of utilising that pink ball,” Root said. “We thought the wicket would hold together better than it did. Throughout all the practice days it seamed around, it swung prodigiously and seam looked a threatening option.”It’s easy in hindsight to select a different team but we wanted to play our seamers, which we feel is a big strength of ours, give them the chance to exploit those conditions, unfortunately it was a slight misread in that regard.”Root believed that the pink ball was a considerable factor for both batting sides, with Kohli also rating the batting overall in this match as not “up to standard”.”I honestly think the ball had quite a big factor in this wicket, the plastic coating on it, the hardness of the seam compared to the red SG ball, meant it almost gathered pace off the wicket,” Root said. “Credit to Axar, in particular, he exploited that exceptionally well and found a very good method, a very repeatable method, on that surface.”Pressed on the pitch conditions and whether host nations should lose WTC points should a pitch be rated poor by the ICC, Root said “I’m sure off the back of this things will get looked at” and “I’m sure they’ll look at other wickets around the world at different times”.”I think that this surface is a very challenging one, a very difficult one to play on,” he said. “It’s not for players to decide if it’s fit for purpose, that’s up to the ICC. As players we have to try to counter it as best we can.”Let’s not hide away from the fact that we’ve been outplayed here. On this surface we’ve still been outplayed and we have to accept that. It’s a real shame because it’s a fantastic stadium, there’s 60,000 people come to watch a brilliant, iconic Test match and I feel for them… the fact of the matter is it was a challenge for both sides and as a player you can only play what’s in front of you and credit to India, they outplayed us on that wicket.”Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma walk off the field with England following suit•BCCINow leading the series 2-1, India go into the last match starting on March 4 also in Ahmedabad, albeit in the morning as opposed to a day-night match, needing only a draw to reach the WTC final against New Zealand at Lord’s in June. England needed to defeat India 3-1 to reach the final.Root said it was important his side went into the final match of this series without any “baggage” from losing two on the trot.”We can’t have any scars going into the last game,” he said. “We’ve got to keep looking forward and we’ve got to keep remembering we won six on the bounce away from home coming into the last two games and won six on the bounce in the sub-continent, so you don’t become a bad team overnight.”We go into next week with a very good attitude and we take the hurt from this and apply it in our performance and use it as motivation to come away with something.”

Pakistan overcome the panic: 'We thought we'd entertain people a little'

Imam-ul-Haq was frustrated at not being able to see the chase home, but they got there in the end

ESPNcricinfo staff03-Apr-2021It should’ve been far more comfortable than it ultimately was but given Pakistan’s records in chases such as the one they faced at Centurion, it is an achievement they eventually overcame two distinct phases of panic after two set partnerships to sneak through.Chasing 274 in the modern ODI isn’t usually seen as problematic, even accounting for a slightly trickier surface but this chase was only Pakistan’s fifth successful one of a 270-plus target in a decade. That is the same number as Ireland and fewer than every Full Member other than Zimbabwe. Chasing, all of Pakistan knows, is not a strength. And so, as much as the win, the collapse from 186 for 1 to 203 for 5 and the unnecessary losses of Mohammad Rizwan and Shadab Khan after a steadying partnership, was on the minds of Pakistan post-game. “You know there’s this pandemic bringing everyone down these days and so we thought we’d entertain people a little,” joked Imam-ul-Haq, whose 70 caught the mood of the win: a good enough, but it should’ve been much more.Related

Babar century trumps van der Dussen's as Pakistan win thriller

van der Dussen: 'A hundred overs can come down to one moment'

“But on a serious note, if you want to win big tournaments and become a top three team… it’s not as if we don’t talk about this in our meetings, it gets discussed, that if your top three get set in white-ball, then in other teams they don’t just make 100, they get 150. That is what we’re trying to do, like Babar [Azam] and I were set today, we should finish the game. We were playing an ODI after a long time. We want to learn from our mistakes and turn these 70s and 80s into matchwinning knocks and turn a win like this into a seven- or six-wicket win.”Imam did point out that a good quality attack and a surface with spongy bounce played a role in their eventual difficulties, but Pakistan and Imam’s rustiness in the format was evident too. This was only Pakistan’s sixth ODI since the 2019 World Cup and Imam himself has been a peripheral presence since that tournament – a result of no longer being in the Test XI and not getting enough ODIs to play.”To be honest, I’m very disappointed [in not finishing the game],” Imam said. “I’ve been waiting one and a half years since my last hundred. I haven’t had that many opportunities in the last year. You don’t always get what you want, but I’ve got two more games to make up for it.”Pakistan will also cheer Babar Azam’s hundred, his 13th in ODIs. He hasn’t been out-of-form exactly but a little dip in the Tests against South Africa earlier this year – when Keshav Maharaj troubled him – had induced a hint of anxiety among fans. He’s since responded with runs in the PSL and now this innings, soothing reassurance that there are very few batsmen in the world better than him right now.”I enjoyed that hundred quite a bit,” Azam said. “With Imam the plan was just to stretch that partnership as far as possible into the target. We just didn’t want to lose focus at any stage. We wanted to finish it but unfortunately, I got out, then Imam did and we had a bit of a collapse which put pressure on us. But Rizi and Shadab really had an outstanding partnership that brought us back into the game.”We’re feeling quite confident after this win and I want to keep my form going in the next game. When you win, you have some good things and bad things you take from the game. I’m going to speak to the boys about the mistakes we made a bit more and discuss how we could’ve done things better.”
