Man United fans thought Fred was robbed of being Man of the Match

Brandon Williams made his first Premier League start for Manchester United as they beat Brighton & Hove Albion 3-1.

To top it off, he was named Man of the Match in a vote by the club’s supporters, after being given a standing ovation when he was substituted off in the 91st minute:

While many United fans were delighted for the teenager that he made his full league debut and received recognition for the performance he put in, they also felt that Fred was robbed of being named Man of the Match.

The 26-year-old made 2 tackles, 2 dribbles and 1 key pass throughout the entirety of the game, which is another sign of his recent improvement, with this being the Brazilian’s fifth league start in a row, after playing in 13 from the start in the whole of last season.

Man Utd swoop for Ruben Neves "ticks all the boxes", says Shaka Hislop

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Speaking on ESPN FC, former Premier League goalkeeper Shaka Hislop has said Ruben Neves “ticks all the boxes” for Manchester United.

What did he say?

The Portugal international has been an ever-present for Wolves since joining from Porto for a fee in the region of £15.8m, playing 102 times and scoring 14 goals.

The 22-year-old has seen his name previously linked with a move to Old Trafford, and Hislop has thrown his backing behind a potential United swoop.

He said: “Well, that (whether Wolves would let Neves go) is the big question. Let’s assume that Manchester United come up with the funds that prompts Wolves to part with Ruben Neves. Just talent-wise, age-wise, ticks all the boxes for Manchester United. Still a big club, still have a lot of money.

“Assuming they are able to put a package on the table to tempt the player, I don’t think that’s any question, to tempt the club, that is the more difficult proposition, I think they can, I think they will. If they do I think it works perfectly well for both.”

Inspired signing

United have seen first-hand just how much damage Neves can cause, when he scored a long-range thunderbolt against them earlier this season in a 1-1 draw at Molineux. The Portuguese man isn’t afraid of letting fly from distance, as evidenced by his 1.4 shots per game in the Premier League – that number actually jumps up to a ridiculous 3.3 in the Europa League.

Playing alongside Joao Moutinho in the Wolves midfield, Neves is tasked with holding down the engine room. And it is easy to imagine him playing alongside someone like Scott McTominay in the middle of the park for the Red Devils too. At just 22, he is the exact same age as the United academy product, and the duo could more than hold their places in the side for the years to come.

As Hislop suggests, the £45m-rated ace really does “tick all the boxes” for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

Leeds fans are delighted as Pablo Hernandez pens new deal

Leeds United announced on Tuesday evening that Pablo Hernandez had signed a new contract with the Championship club.

And it was not a surprise that a whole host of the fans took to social media to show their delight.

Hernandez is hardly a spring chicken at the age of 34 but has shown this season that he can still play a huge role for Marcelo Bielsa’s side.

I

Indeed, the Spaniard has contributed two goals and two assists in 10 Championship appearances during the 2019/20 campaign despite struggling with injury.

Hernandez has penned a two-year extension with the Whites, meaning that he is now contracted to the club until the end of the 2021/22 campaign.

Leeds note on their official website that the attacker has become the seventh member of the first-team squad to pen a new deal since the summer.

And a whole host of the club’s supporters are absolutely delighted, as shown by the Twitter reaction below:

Roger Johnson signing was a disaster

When Mick McCarthy made Roger Johnson his third signing of 2011’s summer window, it was a significant deal.

£7m was spent on the centre-back, which is worth £8.6m in today’s money using the Bank of England’s inflation calculator, and McCarthy had snapped up the man who he was believed to be a long-term admirer of after Birmingham and Johnson were relegated to the Championship.

However, one presumes that the ex-Wolves boss wouldn’t have been in admiration of the defender for much longer.

In just his first season at Molineux, the Ashford-born man was involved in a number of unprofessional incidents.

Johnson took aim at supporters following a game against Newcastle after they cheered the substitution of Karl Henry, going as far as calling the Molineux faithful a “disgrace”, “disgusting” and also stating that their behaviour “stinks”.

He was entitled to think that, but those kind of comments won’t endear him to fans too much.

It got even worse for Johnson.

Terry Connor – McCarthy’s assistant who had taken the reins following the Irishman’s sacking – noticed that the centre-back was under the influence of alcohol during a training session one Monday, where he was then fined two weeks wages and made to train with the development squad.

The Midlands-based club then suffered relegation in successive seasons to find themselves languishing in League One, where the club’s chiefs decided to terminate Johnson’s contract to get him off the payroll in 2015, putting an end to his miserable four-year stint at Wolves.

In total, he made 72 appearances for Wolves, which means he cost the club £97.2k per game when you divide his £7m transfer fee by his number of outings – he was a complete and utter waste of money.

61-year-old McCarthy has had many years in management, but one feels that he hasn’t made too many signings who were as disastrous as Johnson was.

Total Duds: Spending £22.5 million on Michael Owen was a waste of money and time

This article forms part of our Total Duds feature series, which is where Football Transfer Tavern takes a look at how a player has fared since being signed or sold, using statistical figures and statements from pundits to prove how bad a deal the club got.

When Newcastle United decided to fork out £22.5 million to sign Michael Owen from Real Madrid back in 2005, it perhaps raised a good few eyebrows for a number of reasons.

On the positive side, the former Liverpool ace was arguably still a quality player then, and received heaps of praises from people associated with the Tyneside club. Manager at the time Graeme Souness said that the capture would represent the biggest transfer of his managerial career, whilst chairman Freddy Shepherd said that bringing him to St. James’ Park ranked alongside the signing of Alan Shearer as his proudest moment at the Magpies, as per The Guardian.

Indeed, the Premier League’s all-time record goal scorer and undisputed Toon legend was entering his final season wearing the famous black and white stripes, so Owen had some huge boots to fill.

His debut campaign in the North East was perhaps an underwhelming one to say the least, as he only managed 11 appearances in the top flight, scoring seven goals, according to Transfermarkt.

Scuppered by injury problems, the 40-year old would miss a staggering 54 games in the following term with a ruptured cruciate ligament, as per the website.

He would go on to miss another 17 matches through injury over the next two seasons, before leaving on a free transfer to Manchester United, representing a huge financial loss.

The ex-striker was arguably a loss on the pitch as well, making just 79 appearances over four campaigns, with 2007/08 being the only term where he racked up double figures in the goal scoring department (via Transfermarkt).

Owen did not even want to play for Newcastle in the first place. His heart was set on a return to Liverpool, and perhaps this is a reason as to why he failed to impress at United.

Nevertheless, the Englishman was still a waste of money and time.

Man Utd fans hammer Louis van Gaal after Van Persie comments

It’s safe to say Louis van Gaal may not be the most popular of figures in Manchester right now.

Former Manchester United striker Robin van Persie opened up on his departure from the club, and revealed that it was down to Van Gaal’s ruthlessness that saw him make his exit.

Speaking on The High Performance Podcast back in April, he said (as quoted by The Manchester Evening News): “I had this chat with Louis van Gaal and he told me: ‘Ok Robin, our ways will part. I’m the coach, you’re the player – you have to go, your time is up.

“Ruthless. Towards the end of it, I saw something coming but not this ruthless. And the way he said it as well. And then, like a lot of things go through your mind when you get a message like that.”

After the footage re-emerged via Twitter user @ManUnitedZone_, fans of the Manchester side took to Twitter to voice their thoughts on Van Gaal.

One United fan simply called Van Gaal “bitter” and criticised his treatment of Van Persie as being “very harsh and too direct”.

After firing in the goals to lead United to a final Premier League title under Sir Alex Ferguson, Van Persie surely deserved better treatment from the club and Van Gaal in particular.

He may not have spent too many seasons there, but he certainly contributed massively, and Van Gaal’s abrasive approach feels a little jarring.

It’s no wonder many United fans seem to be up in arms over him.

Sheffield United: Blades fans gush over club’s ‘beautiful’ update

Loads of Sheffield United fans have been reacting to a post from the club’s official account showing a brand-new picture of Bramall Lane.

The Blades shared an aerial shot of the famous stadium with the simple caption “Beautiful Downtown Bramall Lane” followed by a heart emoji.

Notably, the South Yorkshire outfit have played all their home games at the ground, ever since United were first formed many years ago in 1889.

Remarkably, Chris Wilder has guided his boyhood club from the very depths of League One right the way through to the heights of the Premier League.

SUFC stars John Fleck and Lys Mousset sit at the top of the goalscoring chart this season, having scored 5 apiece at the time of writing, and fan favourite John Lundstram sits just behind the Blades duo on 4 goals up until now (according to WhoScored).

Understandably, many United fans are desperate to return to the iconic stands, as Wilder’s men were in hot pursuit of European football before football was suspended nationwide in light of the pandemic. A supporter tweeted the photo is “glorious”, while another added the scene is “beautiful.” One fan even suggested the stadium is “heaven on earth.”

Celtic fans slam transfer links to Claudio Bravo

A fresh transfer report has left many Celtic fans fuming this week.

According to The Times Chile, Man City goalkeeper Claudio Bravo is a target for the Scottish Premiership champions with the veteran set to be out of contract at the end of the season.

It’s safe to say that his arrival wouldn’t go down well with the Hoops’ faithful, here are just a few reasons why…

The 37-year-old was brandished everything from a “calamity” to being “shocking” with the Citizens backup stopper playing just 16 times this season, mostly from domestic cup competitions, fans at Parkhead really don’t want to see him make the switch north.

As per the aforementioned source, Celtic are also looking at Burnley’s Joe Hart and Watford’s Ben Foster yet it’s only one man they really desire – current loan star Fraser Forster.

How’s your Celtic knowledge? Always been a loyal fan? Well can you spot Stilian Petrov from John Hartson? Give it a go if you’re brave enough …

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

The Saints loanee has been Neil Lennon’s regular glovesman this campaign, recording 17 clean sheets in 39 appearances in all competitions, via Transfermarkt.

Although it remains to be seen if they can land the 6 foot 7 giant permanently this summer.

Some members of the Hoops’ faithful are so adamant that they are better off without Bravo that they have suggested that backup goalie Scott Bain is even a better option.

The 28-year-old has been at Celtic since January 2018 and has made a total of 46 appearances.

Clearly, the overwhelming majority of the Bhoys fanbase would be against signing the veteran stopper. As per Spotrac, the 37-year-old is lavishing it up at City on £80k-per-week, something that Celtic could probably do without spending given Bravo’s age.

Pittodrie Stadium

Key information about Pittodrie Stadium

The Pittodrie Stadium was built in 1899 and is now the home of Aberdeen FC who are playing their football over in the Scottish Premiership. The ground is located close to the City Centre of Aberdeen and is also easily accessible by both private and public transport.

The stadium’s current capacity stands at 22,199 with all-seated space, and has a 100m x 66m pitch with natural grass and undersoil heating and no running track surrounding it.

Interestingly enough, the record attendance – 45,061 – is almost double its current capacity and was tallied during Aberdeen’s clash with Hearts in 1954.

A history of Pittodrie Stadium

The history of Pittodrie Stadium, or just commonly known as Pittordie, is quite convoluted because it essentially involved two different Aberdeens. The original Aberdeen football club, which was formed in 1881, would play on various different grounds until finally, in 1899, they settled on a land – which was previously a dunghill for police horses – after clearing it and leasing it from Mr Knight Erskine of Pittodrie.

The first game on the ground would be played on 2 September 1899, the home side thrashing Dumbarton 7-1. But then, in 1903, the club merged with two other local sides, Victoria United and Orion, to form the Aberdeen FC we know today.

With time and improved performances, the interest skyrocketed and the first major redevelopments of the Pittodrie Stadium happened in the 1920s. First the club finally purchased the land since they were just leasing it until then, and it’s got a Main Stand, adding in club offices, dressing rooms and trophy rooms in 1925. Around that time, they also got a dugout for the coach, as introduced by Donald Colman who liked to sit closer to inspect his players better.

The following years also saw them add floodlights and the conversion of the Main Stand into an all-seater area in 1968 as part of a big £100,000 improvement. This was also when the ground was finally renamed from Pittodrie Park to Pittodrie Stadium for the first time.

In 1978, the stadium became the second all-seated stadium in Britain and interestingly enough, it also pre-dated the Taylor Report by a decade or so and also coincided with the legendary reign of Sir Alex Ferguson as well. But the biggest changes were indeed happening during the 1920s and then, the final ones in 1993 when the Beach End got demolished and replaced with the two-tier Richard Donald Stand.

There were, however, some minor changes implemented to the existing ground here and there but as a whole, it does feel like Pittodrie Stadium is still very much outdated. For that reason, however, Aberdeen FC are waiting for their new stadium to be built and Phase Two is scheduled to be completed in time for the 2022/23 season. The ground will be called Kingsford Stadium.

Tickets to watch Aberdeen FC at Pittodrie Stadium

All tickets to watch Aberdeen FC at Pittodrie Stadium can be found on the club’s official website. The price varies depending on the category of tickets and the age of the buyer with the most expensive adult ticket costing £32.

Aberdeen FC also offer a season ticket option with multiple different pricing options depending on the type of ticket you want to purchase. The price of the new Red Shed ticket is £350, which is also the cheapest adult option out there.
