Chelsea are crazy about teenage "star" and could make approach soon

Much has been made of Todd Boehly and his approach to transfer dealings at Chelsea as the club have splashed the cash on plenty of signings during his time in London so far. The Blues have left few stones unturned in the transfer market as they have brought in players all over the pitch in an attempt to return to their former glory on the pitch.

Mauricio Pochettino was appointed as the club's head coach over the summer and the likes of Moises Caicedo, Cole Palmer, and Axel Disasi, among others, were snapped up, after their splurges on Enzo Fernandez, Benoit Badisahile, Raheem Sterling and the rest last season.

The upcoming January transfer window will provide Boehly and Pochettino with another chance to add to the squad and one player who could be on his way to Stamford Bridge is Kobenhavn's Roony Bardghji.

Chelsea transfer news – Roony Bardghji

According to Danish outlet Tipsbladet, Chelsea could soon be knocking on the door to make an approach to sign the teenage prodigy. The report claims that Blues chiefs are "crazy" about the talented winger and that they are one of many big clubs, although the others remain nameless, eyeing him up.

They also carry quotes from former Real Madrid and Everton midfielder Thomas Gravesen, who does not want the club to cash in on the young ace.

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino.

The former Denmark international claimed Kobenhavn must not sell a "star" of their team and should not be looking to move on a player with "so much potential". So, it remains to be seen how much the Danish club would be willing to sell him for, if they are even willing to entertain an auction in January.

The statistics that could show why Chelsea are interested in Bardghji

The exciting prospect, who only turns 18 later this month, has been in fantastic form for his side so far throughout the 2023/24 campaign and has shown big potential for his age. Despite his inexperience and youth, Bardghji has racked up seven goals in 14 Superliga appearances this season, 12 of have come as a starter.

He is yet to register his first assist of the campaign but has provided his teammates with 15 key passes and created one 'big chance' in those 14 outings, which suggests that the 17-year-old whiz is somewhat unfortunate in that respect.

His form this season comes off the back of a return of three goals and one assist in four league starts for Kobenhavn throughout the 2022/23 season. Whilst it is difficult to judge how it would translate to Premier League football, Bardghji's impressive seven-goal haul as a left-footed right winger is an excellent record in comparison to Pochettino's current options.

Nicolas Jackson is the club's top scorer with five top-flight goals and only Raheem Sterling and Cole Palmer (three) have managed more than two outside of the Senegal international.

These statistics show that Chelsea lack multiple consistent goalscoring threats, centrally and out wide, and the 17-year-old Blues target has shown – albeit in Denmark – that he has the potential to provide another one.

This means that the Swedish talent could be an exciting addition for Pochettino to make in January, even if it is one with a view to the future rather than to make an immediate impact on the pitch.

VEJA A TABELA DO CAMPEONATO BRASILEIRO

Newcastle told signing "star in the making" will cost PIF up to £40m

Newcastle United have learned how much they will have to pay for a "potential star in the making", with his price tag revealed by his current club.

Newcastle transfer news

The Magpies have had an up-and-down start to the season, with Eddie Howe's side forcing their way back into the top-four picture in the Premier League following a slow start to the campaign, but they are now struggling to get through their Champions League group.

The issue surrounding Sandro Tonali and his 10-month ban from playing competitive football has put a spanner in the works of Howe's plans, however, and without him around for the rest of the campaign, they could look to do some midfield business during the summer transfer window.

A host of different players have been linked with a move to St James' Park, with Newcastle thought to be keen on signing Kalvin Phillips, but they could also look to a more attack-minded addition in the middle if recent reports are to be believed.

Newcastle learn Rayan Cherki asking price

According to Football Insider, Newcastle will need to pay at least £30m for the signing of Rayan Cherki, with the Lyon youngster a transfer target for the Magpies in the recent past. An offer as high as £40m "will be accepted".

Rayan Cherki Chelsea target

The report states that a "well-placed source revealed that (two) sides feel Cherki could be a shrewd signing and see him as a 'potential star in the making'", with the other team in question believed to be Manchester United.

While Cherki is seen as a genuine target for Newcastle, it is important to stress that a January move looks out of the question, with Lyon not wanting to part ways with one of their star players during a relegation battle in Ligue 1. For that reason, a summer move looks far more likely, should Howe decide that the 20-year-old is a strong option to bring in and boost his squad.

The Frenchman remains an extremely young player, but Cherki's stats are impressive, having already made 112 appearances for Lyon, scoring 14 goals and registering 17 assists in that time. Those are impressive numbers for someone who is still maturing as a footballer, highlighting the end product he could bring to the Magpies in attacking midfield areas.

The youngster, who can also play on the left wing, is out of contract at his current club in the summer of 2025, meaning next year could be the last chance for Lyon to earn as much as possible for his signature, acting as a further boost for Newcastle's negotiating team.

Signing elite young talent is essential for Howe moving forward, ensuring that his team are well-set into the future, and Cherki is someone who could be seen as a huge player for many years to come, having already drawn praise from none other than Kylian Mbappe.

Dhawan left out of India's squad for West Indies Tests

Meanwhile, Mayank Agarwal, a prolific run-scorer in domestic cricket, has received his maiden call-up in international cricket

ESPNcricinfo staff29-Sep-20182:24

Dasgupta: Agarwal and Siraj earned their call-ups

Shikhar Dhawan and Karun Nair have been dropped from the Indian team that will play West Indies in a two-match Test series starting October 4. This means India will try their fifth opening combination of the year with one of Mayank Agarwal or Prithvi Shaw making their Test debut when they walk out alongside KL Rahul in Rajkot next week.Virat Kohli will return to captain India after a three-week break. He’ll have to make do with many of the team’s first choice bowlers unavailable. Jasprit Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar Kumar have been rested. Ishant Sharma, who picked up an ankle injury during the Oval Test earlier this month, and Hardik Pandya, who suffered back spasms in the Asia Cup, were not considered for selection. In their absence, Mohammed Siraj was called up to the Test side for the first time. The 24-year old seamer from Hyderabad is in red-hot form having picked up 40 wickets in nine first-class innings, including an 11-for against Australia A.India’s Test squad for the series against West Indies•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Dhawan’s axe came on the back of a poor series in England, where he managed a top score of only 44 in eight innings. Nair, meanwhile, did not get to play in any of the five Tests, and as it happened in the final one at the Oval, he seems to have lost out in a race with reserve batsman Hanuma Vihari. With India needing an opener, Agarwal finally got his reward for a prolific 2017-18 season in which he scored 2253 runs in 36 innings across formats. The 27-year old from Karnataka was a consistent performer for the A team as well, both on tour in England and at home, when he played against Australia A and South Africa A. He also scored 90 off 111 deliveries against the West Indians in the warm-up game earlier on Saturday.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

R Ashwin, who recently struggled with a hip injury, will lead India’s spin attack again, alongside Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav. Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav and Shardul Thakur round off the fast-bowling resources. Ajinkya Rahane, who has only two half-centuries in his last ten innings, remains vice-captain, while Rishabh Pant, who became the first Indian wicketkeeper to score a hundred in England, retained the gloves.

Top Premier League club now interested in "fantastic" Wolves star

Wolverhampton Wanderers deserve great credit for how they've started the Premier League season, especially after the late departure of Julen Lopetegui in pre-season to hand Gary O'Neil the toughest of tasks. Even without a pre-season with his new squad, however, the former Bournemouth boss simply picked up where Lopetegui left off and more, resulting in the shock defeats of both Manchester City and Newcastle United to leave the Midlands club in the relative comforts of mid-table.

It's not all good news for Wolves though, with their performances on the pitch attracting interest in certain stars away from Molineux, which could deal Gary O'Neil one particular transfer blow.

Wolves transfer news

Even before Lopetegui's exit, Wolves weren't the busiest club in the summer transfer window and were forced to cope with major exits rather than the arrival of new stars. The Midlands club saw both Ruben Neves and Matheus Nunes leave for big money, with the former leaving for Saudi Arabia and the latter opting for a move to Manchester City. The departures make Wolves' start even more impressive this season, but they'll still be desperate to avoid any more high-profile exits, as one Premier League side eye a particular player.

According to 90min, Chelsea have added Rayan Ait-Nouri to their list of left-back targets, alongside Alphonso Davies. The Blues are reportedly planning ahead and want to ensure that they replace Ian Maatsen upon the expiry of his contract in 18 months. Without the former Burnley loanee, the west London club would be left with just Ben Chilwell and Marc Cucurella to call upon in the left-back role, creating the need for a player of Ait-Nouri's calibre and skill set. Wolves, meanwhile, would be left short once again and searching for alternatives in a similar fashion to last summer when they suffered similar departures.

Wolves must keep "fantastic" Ait-Nouri

In a similar fashion to the rest of his teammates, Ait-Nouri is enjoying a far more successful spell than last season, starting 11 Premier League games, which is already more than the number he managed during the entirety of the last campaign. Ait-Nouri's stats (as per FBref) show just how improved the full-back has been for the Midlands club:

Those at Wolves knew that Ait-Nouri was capable of reaching current heights, too, with former captain Conor Coady telling the official website: "He’s really sharp. He turns you inside out. He’s got bags of tricks. It’s important we try and help him settle in as much as possible. He’s a young boy coming from a different country. He’s a fantastic person, he’s brilliant to have around the place, and it’s up to us as teammates and friends to make him settle as quickly as possible and hopefully we’ll keep on going."

Now, the Wolves man is tasked with keeping his current form going, regardless of whether that results in a move to a club of Chelsea's calibre. Ait-Nouri, in many ways, sums up O'Neil's side and Wolves' improvement so far this season as they seek to ease relegation fears.

Brathwaite bemoans absence of regular openers

In the absence of Chris Gayle and Evin Lewis, West Indies have struggled to get much out of make-shift opening pairs this series

Sreshth Shah in Lucknow07-Nov-20181:41

‘Haven’t been anywhere near our best’ – Law

With West Indies’ top order failing in both T20Is, it was down to captain Carlos Brathwaite to do some explaining at the post-match presentation after the 2nd match in Lucknow. He rued not having any designated opener in the side, and said that the makeshift approach taken by the management – with regards to their opening pair – has forced West Indies to always have a rocky start with the bat in the series. In the first game in Kolkata, West Indies’ opening pair of Denesh Ramdin and Shai Hope – neither batsmen are regular T20I openers – lasted all of 15 deliveries, scoring only 16 runs between them, while in Lucknow, a new opening pair of Hope and Shimron Hetmyer fared only marginally better with a combined tally of 21 runs in 22 deliveries. With Chris Gayle and Evin Lewis opting out of the series due to personal reasons, Brathwaite said that the team was simply trying to make do with the resources that are available to them.”We didn’t come to the tour with an out-and-out opener, so we are still trying to find our best opening combination,” Brathwaite said. “There were a few theories in the first game and also this game, on how we wanted our batting order, for different reasons. Ultimately neither worked, because we failed to get a good start. But we’re working with the players we have on tour, and it’s difficult to choose the best batting pair, but we’re trying. Up until a theory works out, it will look bad and give the pundits something to say.”On a disappointing bowling effort from the pacers, Brathwaite raised his own hand without hesitation after conceding 56 runs in a wicketless four-over spell. Brathwaite’s spell, together with the four overs from left-arm spinner Kharry Pierre (0 for 49) allowed India to add over hundred runs in eight overs, and the West Indies captain felt that chasing a score close to 200 was always difficult.Brathwaite, however, did heap praise on the other newcomer, left-arm spinner Fabian Allen, as he conceded only 8.25 per over despite a difficult surface on offer for the spinners. But despite the ordinary bowling performance, the West Indies captain believed that eventually, it was the batting that let the team down in spite of a better show by them against the potent left-arm wristspin of Kuldeep Yadav.”Last game we bowled and fielded very well, but today I don’t think we fielded as well as we wanted to. I myself was disappointed with my bowling effort,” he said. “We let the team down with the ball, and chasing 195 was always going to be an uphill task, but there were a few positives.”The way Fabian Allen bowled in the middle, and he kept the openers under wraps and eventually got Shikhar out. It is hard to look at the negatives sometimes, just need to take the small positives and go away with them.””India batted well, but even at the halfway stage of their innings, we thought we were a wicket or two away to restrict them to 170-180. That being said, we didn’t bat as we wanted to. Our batting continues to let us down. But again, small positives, Kuldeep went for a bit today. We didn’t give a dismal performance, there were one or two positives. So while we often highlight the negatives, it’s sometimes good to take away the positives. We’ve got a young group, so important for them to understand where they went wrong but also appreciate the things they did right. Hopefully we can come away with them and get a win in the final game.”Stuart Law, the West Indies coach, shared the same sentiment as Brathwaite at the post-match conference. “We have got some fantastic T20 players. But, now it’s just about playing for pride,” he said. “It’s time for them to dig deep and play for pride, and give it everything in the last game. If we play anywhere near to our potential, we can beat any team on the day. We need to improve a lot to get to that stage.””The team does have a lot of potential, and ‘potential’ is a horrible word because talk is cheap and actions speak louder. But it’s the experienced guys who need to stick their hands up and do the bulk of the work. They’re supposed to usher the youngsters in, but they’re not quite doing that. It’s a young team, though, and they’re learning on the job. Regardless of being the current T20 champions, we don’t have the same team here and learning on the job against India in India can be mighty tough.”Law also defended Kieron Pollard’s inclusion in the side despite two ordinary performances so far. He made 20 in two innings so far, and his solitary over in the Kolkata T20I – that went for 12 – arguably shifted the momentum of the game back into India’s hands at a time when they were reeling at 57 for four. But Law said that Pollard brings much more to the table, and not just on the cricket field.”Pollard brings a lot, both on and off the field,” Law said. “With the youngsters in the squad, it’s someone like Pollard who motivates them in the dressing room.”He’s a senior member of the squad, and we all know what he’s capable of when he gets going. But yeah, Pollard isn’t in the side only because of what he brings inside the ground. He’s one of the biggest motivators of the youngsters, and he’s just a game away from reminding us why he’s such a T20 force. Look, Pollard himself would not be pleased with his show on the tour so far, and he’ll be itching to finish the series in a blazing manner.”For West Indies, it’s all about playing for themselves now. They travel to Chennai earlier than the hosts as the India players embark on a two-day Diwali break. But with the series already decided, there’s an opportunity for them to field left-handed hard-hitter Sherfane Rutherford and the left-arm quick Obed McCoy in the final T20I to see what those two bring to the table. It’s been a disappointing tour thus far, and they’ll like to finish on a positive note, but for now, they have a couple of days off to enjoy the festive season.
