Maxwell's relief in game Australia 'probably should have lost'

Glenn Maxwell had to quickly adjust to challenging conditions and produced an impressive half-century but it looked as though victory was slipping away

Varun Shetty in Visakhapatnam25-Feb-20193:01

Maxwell was very clear about his plans – Bumrah

Australia went from a feeling of “can’t believe we’ve stuffed this up” to utter relief during the closing stages of their win against India with Glenn Maxwell stressing the importance of holding their nerve to pinch a close win at the start of an away tour.Maxwell had been part of an 84-run third-wicket stand that had put Australia within 38 runs of winning the first T20I, before a combination of tight bowling and nervous batting put the visitors under tremendous pressure leaving Pat Cummins and Jhye Richardson to scramble 14 off the last over.”A lot of the times when you come over here, or when you’re on overseas trips and you get close games, you lose them so often. The home crowd can get behind the home team and you can lose. It can just put your momentum in a different way and the days you’re stuck in the hotel become longer than they are,” Maxwell said. “To win a game like this – by the way we got ourselves in trouble by the last over, we probably should have lost and if it wasn’t for Pat Cummins and Jhye Richardson pulling something out of the hat.”I did mention to Finchy – if anyone could go out there, face their first ball in the last over and get us 14, it’s probably Pat Cummins. He can do anything. He does it quite regularly. I think I remember him in UAE a few years ago. Think he came out and hit a first ball six. We only needed one to win and he hit it in the air. He got the job done tonight, but for him to keep a cool head, hit a gap on the off side against a guy who hits three out of six yorkers is just real good batting. And Jhye Richardson as well, at the end. For a young player to do that, I’m sure he’d have loved the opportunity to bat with Pat at the end. You see that little cuddle at the end. It was beautiful.”ALSO READ: Nathan Coulter-Nile and Glenn Maxwell make the difference in low-scoring thrillerAustralia endured a tough 2018 with their only series win with the white-ball coming early in the year after the Ashes, during the Trans-Tasman T20 tri-series in February. Following that, with the fallout of the ball-tampering scandal in March, they have suffered loses against England, Pakistan, South Africa and India.”It can just bring the whole group together. It’s been a hard eight or nine months of limited-overs cricket for us, and to have a result like this first game on tour is great for our confidence and something we can hopefully ride and gain momentum,” Maxwell said. “Winning momentum is great but losing momentum, as we’ve found out is pretty hard to turn around. Hopefully we can start off our World Cup preparations on a good foot.”Glenn Maxwell’s ultra-aggressive half-century put Australia on course•Getty Images

Maxwell had a crucial role in setting up the win, top-scoring across both teams with a measured 43-ball 56. But those numbers belie the situation he’d walked into. Marcus Stoinis was run out trying to steal a single that was his call, and – yet again – Aaron Finch failed to negotiate an incoming ball. Those wickets off consecutive deliveries and a red-hot Jasprit Bumrah at the top of his mark were the prelude as he walked out. Maxwell had some simple advice to himself.”Don’t go back! After seeing a bunch of balls keep low, [that was] probably my first thought. I just tried to get forward and stay as low as I could and try and cover my stumps. I think I played and missed three times the first four or five balls. It took a bit of getting used to.”On a two-paced track, Maxwell had to guard against any habits picked up during a lengthy season on bouncier surfaces at home. The focus, he said, was on creating a swinging arc rather than staying still and punching through the line. This was quickly on display in the fourth over against Umesh Yadav, where Maxwell skipped either side of the line to pick up two boundaries over mid-off and one down at fine leg.His innings would have only one other boundary shot where he had to expend effort – a slogged six against the turn to Mayank Markande – while most others were grateful acceptances of Yuzvendra Chahal’s largesse. But perhaps the most impressive part of it all, more so than the restraint, was that it was an innings constructed, in many ways, through smarts obtained by gauging how Australia’s bowlers pulled things back in the middle overs of India’s innings. The debate around Maxwell’s role in Australian cricket has been a regular topic in the last year, but since being implored by Steven Smith to “train smarter” he has shone in T20 recent won the Australian T20I player of the year award. For now, however, he said he has neither had a chat with Justin Langer about his batting positions in ODIs, nor given too much thought about a World Cup spot.”I have no idea if I’m going to be in that World Cup squad or what number I’m going to bat, so I suppose it just comes down to opportunity – if I can keep making most of opportunities like tonight,” he said. “It would have been nice to finish it off, but I chose that Chahal [over] as my time to go tonight and I still back that as the right decision. I found Krunal and Bumrah were very hard to get away. We decided that the two leggies were our best opportunities to score.”If I can turn those sorts of innings into not-out, 75-ish, and be consistent that way, I think I can probably go a long way in penciling my name for the World Cup and hopefully continue that job for the rest of this year.”

Arsenal ready to accept bids for Partey and Jorginho as transfer news shared

As Arsenal look to gain an advantage in the Premier League title race, the January transfer window could be vital. The Gunners suffered heartbreak last time out, with Manchester City eventually regaining their top spot on their way to securing a history treble in the last campaign. It is the type of heartbreak that Mikel Arteta will want to avoid this season, but after a 2-0 defeat against West Ham United, it's clear that some changes may still be needed at The Emirates.

With that said, whilst their attention could soon turn to reinforcements, reports suggest that Arsenal are ready to sell two big earners in the January transfer window in a ruthless move from the North London club.

Arsenal transfer news

The days of poor Arsenal recruitment seem to be over after a successful summer transfer window, which saw Declan Rice, David Raya, Jurrien Timber and Kai Havertz all arrive. Rice particularly impressed from the off, before Havertz found his feet alongside Raya, who is now firmly Arteta's number one ahead of Aaron Ramsdale. Timber, meanwhile, suffered an early injury blow and will have to wait to have a similar impact when he returns. Following those arrivals, however, the Gunners could free up some room by selling two midfielders next month.

Arteta could land Arsenal's next Bergkamp in £86m-rated "animal"

The Gunners are seemingly stepping up their search to find a new centre-forward.

ByRobbie Walls Dec 30, 2023

According to Pete O'Rourke of Football Insider, Arsenal are now ready to accept offers for both Thomas Partey and Jorginho in January as they look to make space for those potentially coming in the other direction. Given that the North London side sit two points adrift of league leaders Liverpool too, it's clear that Arsenal could do with any advantage they can get for the remainder of the season. Of course, Arteta will hope that the potential exits of Partey and Jorginho don't instead harm his side.

Arsenal must replace Partey

If Partey and Jorginho are to leave the Emirates next month, then they must replace the midfield duo – especially the former. We've seen Manchester City suffer the consequences of failing to find an adequate back-up for Rodri this season, suffering defeats against the likes of Wolverhampton Wanderers. And Arsenal must make sure to avoid suffering the same fate when it comes to Rice, with Partey currently an ideal second option for Arteta when fit. Meanwhile, the experience of a player such as Jorginho can often be invaluable in a title race and is also something that the Gunners must be wary of losing.

The potential departures could be sacrifices that turn into a good thing for Arsenal, however, given that Partey's wages reportedly sit at £200k per week and Jorginho's wages are reportedly as high as £110k per week. Given that both players are often on the cusp of Arteta's side these days too, it's fair to say that the Gunners would be clearing plenty of room on their current wage bill by sanctioning the departures of the midfield duo. When the winter window opens, they'll both be players to keep an eye on, it seems.

Fabrizio Romano hints West Brom are eyeing move for Liverpool gem Carvalho

West Brom appear to be battling a number of their Championship rivals for the signing of a Premier League "star", according to a new claim from journalist Fabrizio Romano.

West Brom transfer news

The Baggies could be looking for new signings in the January transfer window, giving them a sprinkling of extra quality to aid their promotion push, wit the club currently in fifth place ion the second tier. Carlos Corberan's side look nicely poised to at least finish in the playoff positions this season, but they won't have given up hope of earning automatic promotion and sealing a return to the Premier League.

Bournemouth striker Kieffer Moore is one player who has been linked with a move to West Brom this month, having struggled for playing time at the Premier League club of late, while Wolves youngster Dexter Lembikisa is seen as a potential defensive addition. Chelsea's Andrey Santos is another player who has emerged as a target, and given the number of rumours around currently, it would be a surprise if nobody came in during January.

West Brom eyeing Fabio Carvalho

Taking to X on Saturday, Romano hinted that West Brom are among the clubs keen on signing Liverpool attacker Fabio Carvalho, mentioning Wolves and all of the Championship's current top-six as potential suitors who have asked for a loan.

Liverpool's Fabio Carvalho

"Understand Wolves have asked for Fabio Carvalho on loan until the end of the season. Top 6 Championship clubs have also asked for loan, waiting for Liverpool and player’s camp to decide for best option. LFC want guaranteed game time for Fabio."

Carvalho appears to be a wanted man this month, and he has every right to be, even though he has experienced a tough period in his career over the past year or so. Having failed to be a key man at Liverpool after arriving in 2022, Jurgen Klopp allowed him to join RB Leipzig on loan last summer, but he has now returned from Germany after only managing one Bundesliga start this season, and a further eight substitute appearances.

Despite this, Carvalho is a young player who has so much attacking quality in his boots, with none other than Roberto Firmino once saying of him:

"I confess that I had watched some of his games before he came to Liverpool, so I was already impressed by the way he played. He’s a star, he’s a great player and now he’s also a very close friend. We are happy to have him here at Liverpool and I know he will help us a lot, with assists, goals and also his character on the pitch."

Carvalho could be such a strong loan addition for West Brom between now and the end of the season, with the Portuguese capable of playing in a central attacking midfield role, but also out wide, giving Corberan so much extra depth in the coming months.

Will the player in question be staying put at the Hawthorns?

The youngster will be desperate to prove his worth before returning to Liverpool and showing Klopp that he is worth persevering with, so it is a transfer that should suit everyone, but the Baggies look set to face plenty of competition.

ESPNcricinfo Superstats launched, will add 'layer of quality and value' to traditional numbers

Rahul Dravid and Sanjay Manjrekar join the creators of the three-pack set of new-age metrics at the official launch in Mumbai

Srinath Sripath in Mumbai20-Mar-20193:02

‘Superstats’, a new language to follow cricket

A slice of luck – a dropped catch to be exact – could well have saved, and extended, Rahul Dravid’s career, the man himself reckoned at the launch of ESPNcricinfo’s Superstats, a set of new-age metrics for a more nuanced understanding of the modern game.Dravid spoke about how a top-edge off Stuart Broad fell in no-man’s land in the Mohali Test of England’s tour of India in 2008, and allowed him to score a career-saving hundred, leading to a “couple of good years (in international cricket)” thereafter.Dravid was on 1 when the chance was missed, and went on to make 136. ESPNcricinfo’s ball-by-ball commentary wondered if “that’s a bit of luck for Dravid”, something Luck Index – one of three elements that make up Superstats, Smart Stats and Forecaster being the others – attempts to quantify for T20 cricket.Dravid was part of a panel that also featured Sanjay Manjrekar and ESPNcricinfo’s editor-in-chief Sambit Bal, along with Dr Raghunathan Rengaswamy of IIT Madras, whose team collaborated with ESPNcricinfo’s team of statisticians to develop Superstats. The new stats language, available for T20 cricket to start with, has been derived by putting our rich ball-by-ball data through complex algorithms developed by Gyan Data, an IIT-M incubated company founded by Raghunathan. In the words of ESPN India head Ramesh Kumar, these Superstats “offer a final point of view to settle water-cooler debates and discussions on cricket” and “will validate cricketing wisdom”.Bal said that while traditional numbers would continue to be around, Superstats added a “layer of quality and value to them”, and explained how it would mean “batsmen and bowlers are equalised” and measurable on a common metric that gauges their impact in a match. The panel discussion at the launch of ESPNcricinfo’s Superstats in Mumbai – [L to R] Raunak Kapoor, Sambit Bal, Rahul Dravid, Sanjay Manjrekar and Dr Raghunathan Rengaswamy•Annesha Ghosh/ESPNcricinfo

Manjrekar, a well-travelled broadcaster, spoke about how such enhanced statistics would benefit commentators and fans watching live telecasts, especially in T20 tournaments like the IPL, which is followed by scores of data-savvy fans who are “fascinated by numbers”, than those who have grown up watching the longer formats.Should these metrics have been available during his playing career, Manjrekar argued that “an Ajay Jadeja might have won Man of the Match in the 1996 World Cup quarterfinal” against Pakistan in Bengaluru, for the impact his innings had on the game’s result, and not Navjot Singh Sidhu, who ended up getting the award. When asked if insights of the sort had helped him make informed decisions in his playing and coaching career, Dravid mentioned acquiring the services of Brad Hodge for Rajasthan Royals in the 2012 auction despite his middling returns in past editions of the tournament with other teams.Royals, “pretty much a budget team at that stage”, went with Hodge to fill a middle-order spot despite the fact that on pitches such as in Jaipur – the Royals’ home ground – his “averages weren’t good, numbers weren’t great”. Dravid and Co picked Hodge as a death-overs finisher based on his compelling past record against pace bowling. His past failures were attributed to “playing in spin-friendly tracks in Kolkata and Kochi, falling often to left-arm spinners”.Hodge, who put in a few match-winning performances in that role, had reportedly insisted that he bat at No. 3, only to be told by Dravid that “I don’t want your 450 runs at three, give me 200 runs at strike rate 160 facing the Mitchell Johnsons and Dale Steyns”.Dravid spoke about how the conversation around T20 cricket based on conventional metrics “sometimes frustrated me as a player and a coach”, and how it was “fantastic to see people have finally recognised over the past few years” that the T20 game was a different beast.Dravid and Manjrekar agreed that, with Superstats and other new-age metrics around, the critical thing was to “make the best use of these numbers” and arrive at meaningful conclusions. The two former India batsmen did, however, debate at length about whether “geeks and nerds are taking over the game”, observing that while the likes of MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli would no doubt be better captains with such insights, there was “an emotional element to cricket, a human element to it”, which can never fully be explained by numbers.Dravid argued that cricket would “never fully be taken over by the geeks, because while the numbers might tell you ‘bowl X on that day’, the captain knows better if he’s up for it, because numbers can’t quantify whether he’s carrying a niggle. As a coach, sometimes if captains take a gut call on the field, you tend to back them, as long as you know he’s not doing it blindly. I think a guy like Dhoni gets the feel of that (the game), better than most captains”.
