West Bromwich Albion have picked up three wins from their last five Championship matches which has ensured the Baggies' grip on a playoff spot has remained firm, but Carlos Corberan will still want to add signings to his squad this month regardless.

With Grady Diangana and Semi Ajayi both still out at the African Cup of Nations, alongside an extensive injury list at the Hawthorns continuing to trouble the Spaniard, this January transfer window will see West Brom be presumably very active to strengthen and add needed depth.

Despite Brandon Thomas-Asante now boasting double figures up top for the Baggies in all competitions, the rumour mill coming out of the Hawthorns suggests Corberan is targeting a new striker recruit.

West Brom's striker search

With West Brom having officially completed a deal for former Aston Villa attacker Andreas Weimann to join the club, the West Midlands outfit have also now thrown their hat into the ring to sign raw Leeds United striker Joe Gelhardt according to further reports.

Football journalist Alan Nixon, via his Patreon, confirmed that the Baggies are keen on signing the fringe Whites figure this January on a loan deal.

But, interest from the likes of Rangers and Celtic in Scotland alongside fellow second-tier side Plymouth Argyle means the deal won't be a walk in the park to finalise.

With Corberan previously being assistant manager to Marcelo Bielsa at Leeds, the iconic Argentinian manager really taking a shine to Gelhardt whilst in the Whites dug-out, the West Brom boss will hope a transfer is forthcoming due to these previous loyalties.

Moreover, with West Brom succeeding of late playing young and hungry talents such as Tom Fellows from the get-go, the West Midlands club could well help Gelhardt find his shooting boots again after suffering setbacks in his progression at Elland Road recently.

How Gelhardt fits into the West Brom team

Not guaranteed to be a starter outright relocating to the Hawthorns – Thomas-Asante coming into his own over the past few Championship games – Corberan could well utilise Gelhardt as a dangerous impact substitute on his arrival.

The 21-year-old has excelled playing that role for the Whites in the past, bagging two goals during the 2021-22 Premier League season for Leeds despite only averaging 37 minutes on the pitch per game that campaign.

Likewise, as Thomas-Asante is prone to barren patches of form in front of goal with the Baggies striker not scoring a single strike last year in November, the Leeds number 30 would be a perfect waiting-in-the-wings style buy.

Gelhardt's breakthrough time at Leeds during that top-flight season left a lasting impression on Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp, with Redknapp stating that the aggressive forward was a 'human wrecking ball' for this team with his pace and tenacity receiving further glowing praise.

Yet, with his minutes significantly cut by Daniel Farke in West Yorkshire this season, Gelhardt is now eyeing a move away from the Championship giants in the present day.

Fellows would surely love to play alongside the 21-year-old, the Baggies potentially catching teams off-guard with youthful exuberance away from the run-of-the-mill efforts of John Swift and Jed Wallace.

Scoring in back-to-back games in the senior set-up for West Brom has seen Fellows even be touted for a move up a division, Everton even reportedly interested, but the explosive 20-year-old could stay put knowing he has an equally offensive-minded teammate alongside him joining.

Fellows helped himself to 14 assists for the Baggies playing in various different set-ups at youth level, and with Gelhardt equally starring at Leeds as a promising youngster with 20 goals in total for the U21s, this injection of youth could be crucial for West Brom as they aim to catch teams by surprise as an under-the-radar promotion candidate.

Bangladesh bowling coach Courtney Walsh wants fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman to be given enough time to recover from his ankle injury, and not be used too much during the tri-series in Ireland next month. Walsh suggested that given Mustafizur’s habit of picking up small injuries, he should be geared towards his work for the World Cup, which begins two weeks after the Ireland tour.Speaking after the side’s first training session in Dhaka before leaving for Ireland, Walsh was concerned about the injury worries to some of his pace bowlers. Apart from Mustafizur, Rubel Hossain has a side strain while Mohammad Saifuddin is suffering from a tennis elbow. Even Abu Jayed is said to have picked up a niggle.But it is Mustafizur who has had such an impact in the Bangladesh bowling line-up after the 2015 World Cup and is the biggest concern ahead of the next big event in England.”[Mustafizur] has got a big role to play in the World Cup, once he is fit,” Walsh said. “But I don’t think we rely on any one player. Shakib [Al Hasan], Mash [Mashrafe Mortaza] and Rubel have been consistent. Fizz hasn’t been as sharp since his injury, and he keeps picking up slight niggles. The BCCI’s ombudsman-cum-ethics officer Justice DK Jain served notices to former India batsmen Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman on Wednesday for their alleged conflict of interest for being part of IPL franchises’ support staffs as well as serving as members of the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC). Justice Jain has given them time until April 28 to file their written responses.While Laxman is Sunrisers Hyderabad’s mentor, the Mumbai Indians website mentions Tendulkar as their icon.This is the third case of conflict of interest allegation being filed during this IPL after former India captain Sourav Ganguly was summoned by Justice Jain for his triple role as the CAB president, CAC member as well as advisor of Delhi Capitals. Hojbjerg was a consistent regular and key player under both Antonio Conte and Jose Mourinho, making 35 league appearances last season with all of them being full starts. Under Postecoglou this term, the 28-year-old has started just five matches, with Spurs' boss preferring both Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr ahead of him when they're available.

This has resulted in claims that Hojbjerg is open to leaving Tottenham in pursuit of more game time, and reliable transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano has backed that up.

"Hojbjerg changed agents recently, in September, because he wants to leave, he wants to go to another club," said Romano on Kick late last month (via Spurs Web).

"But, for Tottenham, it has to be a permanent transfer or a loan with an obligation to buy. It has to be a guaranteed transfer or nothing."

It will be interesting to see if Spurs can facilitate an exit for the former Southampton star, as there are other reports suggesting this could have an impact on the club's next signing after Timo Werner and Radu Dragusin.

Postecoglou wants to add a new number eight to his Tottenham ranks, leading to interest in Chelsea star Conor Gallagher, but they may have to part company with Hojbjerg first. Spurs will also be eager to trim more surplus players after offloading the out-of-favour Eric Dier and Djed Spence on loan deals. Another player to be linked with a move away is young midfielder Bryan Gil.

Gil "dreams" of Sevilla return

According to Estadio Deportivo, Gil "dreams" of re-joining former club Sevilla while their La Liga rivals Real Sociedad push for a move.

The 22-year-old has made nine league appearances under Postecoglou this season, but only two have been starts. While he'd like to fight for his place at Spurs, he doesn't view a move to Sociedad as a bad option, as he's tired of being loaned out, and it is believed they'd want him permanently.

Sevilla are his preferred option, and an exit isn't entirely ruled out for the Spaniard before Jan 31. However, due to the price demanded by Spurs for Gil, the aformentioned club are seen as a "practically impossible" destination for him.

Former Spurs boss Conte, despite barely picking Gil himself, did revere some of his qualities – namely the playser's pace and a real in-game intelligence.

“It was really important, you know about Bryan Gil we are talking about a player who was born to play football," said Conte in 2023.

"He understands football quickly. He’s so clever, so intelligent to understand the situation. Then you know this league is difficult, because you have to be good in quality and be fast and to have good endurance, and he has this type of quality."

وسُئل عن عرض الأهلي السعودي إلى فينيسيوس ورد: “لا أعرف إذا كان لديه عرض أم لا، أتحدث مع الجميع يوميًا ولم نتحدث أبدًا عن هذا الموضوع، فينيسيوس يحب لعب كرة القدم كثيرًا لدرجة أن أي شيء من الخارج لن يزعجه”.

وعن كيفية التخطيط للقيام بالتناوب، أشار: “لست قلقًا للغاية بشأن خوض 7 مباريات، لقد اعتدنا على ذلك، وتقييم الإرهاق مهم للغاية، البرازيليون تحت المراقبة لأنه لم يكن لديهم الكثير من الوقت للعمل والراحة”.

وأكد: “يجب أن نحاول تجنب الإصابات، العام الماضي كان لدينا الكثير وتحملنا الأمر جيدًا… علينا أن نتعايش مع هذا، مع هذا الجدول الزمني من الطبيعي أن نتعرض للإصابات”.

وعن سبب عدم ظهور فينيسيوس بنفس المستوى مع البرازيل، أوضح: “التفسير الذي أجده هو أن مشكلة البرازيل، التي لا أريد الخوض فيها، هي مشكلة عامة، إنهم يواجهون صعوبات في العثور على أفضل نسخة لديهم”.

وأصر: “إنها ليست مشكلة فينيسيوس، إنها مشكلة عامة، نحن سعداء معه ليس في أفضل حالاته، لكن لا يمكننا أن ننسى أنه بفضل فينيسيوس فزنا بدوري أبطال أوروبا، يجب أن نكن له الكثير من الحب في مدريد”.

أعرب محمد عبد الكريم المدرب العام لفريق المصري البورسعيدي، عن سعادته بعد تحقيق الفوز على الهلال الليبي بنتيجة 5-3 بركلات الترجيح، وذلك بالمباراة التي جمعت بينهما ببطولة كأس الكونفدرالية، والتأهل لدور المجموعات.

According to Fanatik in Turkey, Newcastle have made an offer for Can Uzun from FC Nurnberg, albeit so have Brighton & Hove Albion, Eintracht Frankfurt and Borussia Dortmund. The fee discussed is reportedly over €10m (£9m), but the forward is expected to find a new club in the summer transfer window rather than before the end of this month when Newcastle could be better positioned to strike a deal.

With just a week left until the January transfer window slams shut, Newcastle could be in for a busy few days on the exit front, which could then see them return to the market for reinforcements.

The numbers provide positive reading for Uzun, who has shown signs of possessing an all-round ability that out-and-out goalscorer Wilson perhaps has a lower ceiling on, whilst also outscoring the current Newcastle man.

Uzun earned the praise of OptaFranz after becoming the youngest goalscorer for Nurnberg at 17-years and 268-days-old, posting on X: "17 years, 268 days – Can Uzun is the youngest goalscorer for the Nurnberg. 2nd league, even in the Bundesliga, an FCN goalscorer has never been so young. Diamond."

That said, if Newcastle have the chance to sign a player who is still so young and already breaking records, then they should jump at the chance, especially given the fact that he's also managed to outscore Wilson in league action so far this season.
