England are 'favourites' for the World Cup – Glenn McGrath

McGrath is impressed by the way the World Cup hosts have gone about scoring runs in ODIs recently, and believes India and Australia are the other contenders for the Cup

England have impressed me with their ODI cricket – McGrath

Glenn McGrath, who has turned making pre-series predictions into a mini-sport of its own, has come out with perhaps his most surprising prediction yet, naming England – arch-rivals during his playing career – as the favourites for the 2019 World Cup.McGrath retired from international cricket in a blaze of glory, as Player of the Tournament in the 2007 World Cup in which Australia smothered all opponents, and remains one of the game’s all-time greats. He is now the director of cricket at the MRF Pace Foundation in Chennai where his role is to mentor and finetune young fast bowlers.During his playing career, McGrath was part of an Australia team that regularly beat England, but it is the hosts’ recent one-day prowess that has made him back Eoin Morgan’s team as the one to beat. “England, a very good one-day unit,” McGrath told ESPNcricinfo recently during his trip to India. “To me they are the favourites going into this World Cup, so I think they’ll do very well.”Who will win the World Cup? Play Cricket Picks and winWas this the first time McGrath has called England a ‘favourite’ for any cricket tournament?”Probably! I can’t remain biased my whole life,” he laughed. “You’ve got to go on current form. The England team – the way they go about it, they have impressed me. They have scored some big, big totals. Most teams used to go hard in the first 15 and the last 15, and consolidate in the middle. But teams like England, India are just going hard the whole 50 overs, and that’s the impact T20 cricket has had. So yeah, I don’t think I’ve ever said ‘England are the team to beat’ or the ‘favourites’.”I didn’t say they were going to win the World Cup though! So they are the favourites and are going to be tough to beat in their own conditions, but fingers crossed, Australia can do well.”India and Australia, McGrath said, were the other clear contenders based on the form and past history.”The two standouts to me were India and England, with fingers crossed, Australia doing well. South Africa are always a good team, West Indies are bit of a dark horse – they can play really well or badly, probably similar to Pakistan. So it’s going to be an interesting World Cup. England and India are tough to beat, but with Australia’s form, I think we’ll see them make the final.”I was a little bit concerned how Australia were going to go, but their form of late has really impressed me. They’ve performed really well in conditions that are not suited to them, so that bodes well for their chances. I’d like to think that they’ll make the finals. India are a quality one-day unit as well. They’ll be in the running.”

Emery can unearth an ideal Mings heir in Aston Villa’s teen sensation

Aston Villa returned to winning ways on the weekend, securing a 5-0 victory over Sheffield United which maintains their hopes of a top four finish in the Premier League.

Unai Emery brought in a few players during the transfer window, yet he failed to sign a centre-back and with injuries to Pau Torres and Tyrone Mings, he may be stretched in this area if any more of his players suffer setbacks.

Mings is currently ruled out of the whole campaign following a serious knee injury suffered in the opening game of the season and with the player turning 31 next month, Emery may have to think about the future without him.

Tyrone Mings’ injury news

The Englishman has already missed 103 games during the early part of his career at Bournemouth due to a back injury and a cruciate ligament tear, and his current injury will be tough to come back from.

It could take him a while to get back up to speed and by that time, he may be slightly lower in the pecking order under Emery.

The Englishman has just two years remaining on his current contract, and it is time the former Arsenal boss started looking for potential heirs to take over from Mings.

Instead of diving into the transfer market, however, Emery could take a look closer to home as young defender Kerr Smith is thriving and could be an ideal long-term replacement for the 30-year-old.

Kerr Smith could be a future Aston Villa centre-back

Prior to making the move to England in 2022, Smith was a teenage prodigy at Dundee United, making 12 appearances for the first team before Steven Gerrard poached him.

Academy manager Mark Harrison lavished praise on the then 17-year-old, saying: “He has lots of potential but has already gained some fantastic experience at first-team level with Dundee United, which is rare for a 17-year-old.”

His spell at United also saw him being spoken highly about by his teammate Marc Connolly, who lauded the teen as “incredible” and it is clear he is destined to play at the very top before long.

Over the last two years, Smith has played 51 games combined for the U18 and U23 sides, and he only recently signed a new professional contract at the club before being sent on loan to Scottish outfit St Johnstone, where he will gain more senior experience.

The 19-year-old played in all three of Villa’s EFL Trophy matches this season and acquitted himself well against senior professionals as he won 67% of his aerial duels per game along with averaging an 87% pass success rate and it surely won't be long before Emery hands him a debut in the senior Villa side.

He is still raw and developing, but this spell in the academy has clearly worked wonders for Smith and with Mings’ long-term future unclear, especially following a lengthy recovery from his knee injury, the young Scot could emerge as a perfect heir in the next year or so.

He could save Emery plenty of money in the transfer window by doing so.

England 'won't listen to favourites' chat' – Trevor Bayliss

George Dobell12-Jul-20195:31

#PoliteEnquiries: Roy v Dharmasena, Psychic Jofra, is MS Dhoni finished?

Trevor Bayliss has reminded the England team they “have not won anything yet”, in spite of the euphoria surrounding their crushing semi-final victory over Australia.Although Bayliss admitted England’s eight-wicket victory at Edgbaston was “extra special”, he was keen to keep his squad’s feet on the floor and their eyes focused on the prize. So the team had “a good chat” in the dressing room after the game on Thursday and were reminded there is “one big match to go”.”We can’t listen to the outside noise whether it’s good or bad,” Bayliss told the BBC. “We’ve still got a job to do and one big match to go.”We had a chat in the changing room after the game and realised we have not won anything yet. There is going to be a lot of noise around ‘you guys are the favourites’ but we can’t listen to any of that.”We have just got to concentrate on the way we have gone about our cricket over the past four years and what has got us to this point. We have to go through our process. If we do that, we know we will play good cricket and the opposition will have to play even better to beat us.”We’re full of confidence, but we’re not too over the top. Four years ago, after the last World Cup which was not good for England, we set out with plans to hopefully win the 2019 edition. It feels great that now we have a chance to fulfil those dreams.”Watch on Hotstar (India only): Highlights of England’s eight-wicket win over AustraliaEngland will go into the final – their first World Cup final since 1992 – as favourites, having defeated New Zealand by 119 runs in the group stages of the competition. But New Zealand were also finalists in the 2015 tournament, during which they thumped England by eight wickets in one of the most crushingly one-sided World Cup contests of all time. With that in mind, Bayliss remains respectful of a side that contains the likes of Kane Williamson, Ross Taylor and Trent Boult and feels the match is a “50-50″ encounter.”New Zealand have proved they’re a very good team,” Bayliss said. “Anyone can win the final. On the day it’s a 50-50 call.”Bayliss also welcomed the decision to show Sunday’s final on free-to-air television – Channel 4 will share Sky’s feed from 9am on the morning of the match – with England’s coach suggesting it was a chance to “influence another generation of young cricketers”.”It’s a fantastic gesture from Sky,” he said. “Any more fans we can get watching the game is fantastic for our sport. This provides an opportunity for more people to win the World Cup and that means we have the chance in England to influence another generation of youngcricketers. That’s great.”The England squad travel from Birmingham to London on Friday and will have a light training session on Saturday morning.

Alex Carey's Geneva jaunt and AB de Villiers' unlikely replacement

The latest snippets from the Vitality Blast, including Nicholas Pooran at number seven, Paul Nixon’s prophetic tweets, and Lewis McManus’ freak run-out

After winning just twice in 2018, Middlesex have already bettered their record from last season, and are now third-favourites with the bookies to win the Vitality Blast – not to be sniffed at, given they have reached the knockouts just once since their 2008 success. They have managed that despite the absence of AB de Villiers, who picked up injuries to both hands in last week’s win at The Oval to miss two of the seven games he had signed for, much to the club’s frustration. That injury was also a source of frustration for Glamorgan and Gloucestershire, whose marketing departments had both appealed to the AB factor in advertising those games; Middlesex themselves have plastered his face on billboards at various London stations, and are confident he will return for Thursday’s fixture against Kent.De Villiers’ replacement for those two games was Berkshire batsman Dan Lincoln, who hit a useful 30 in defeat at Cheltenham. In a throwback to the 1920s ideal of playing one sport in the winter and another in the summer, Lincoln also plays in goal for non-league side Bognor Regis Town. “Congratulations, Dan,” the club tweeted. “Just some minor shoes to fill.”***Yorkshire are set to go into the second half of the T20 Blast group stages without an overseas player, with coach Andrew Gale admitting that the hectic nature of the worldwide schedule meant they would struggle to find a replacement for Nicholas Pooran.”You can’t really do it like-for-like”, he told the , “because there aren’t many of those players out there. There’s a lot of cricket going around the minute. There’s the Canada [Global T20] tournament going on, and there’s a lot of players playing in that.”Pooran’s impact on the Blast was minimised by rain, though he did plunder 122 runs at a strike rate of 184.84 in his three games.Eyebrows were raised when he came in at No. 7 in Yorkshire’s first game against Derbyshire, but the move simply represented the irrelevance of traditional batting orders in T20.”[Pooran] is at his best… in the last ten overs of the innings,” said Gale. “It just so happened at Chesterfield that he was coming in at seven because we’d lost more wickets than we would have wanted at that stage.”Adil Rashid prepares to bowl during a practice session•Getty Images

Yorkshire will welcome Adil Rashid back into their squad this week – with Moeen Ali and Jack Leach ahead of him in the Ashes pecking order, he is likely to be available for the rest of the tournament.***It was a long weekend to remember for Alex Carey, the wicketkeeper-batsman who was one of the World Cup’s breakout stars.Alex Carey bats, watched by Tom Banton•Getty Images

After missing out on Australia’s Ashes squad, Carey travelled from the Ageas Bowl to Hove on Friday morning, only to realise that he was ineligible for Sussex’s game against Surrey since he was still in the country on his national team visa. That meant booking the first possible flight out of the country – not as easy a task on a mid-summer Saturday morning – to have his visa stamped on the way back, resulting in a quick round trip to Geneva before a Sunday morning ride down to Taunton.Characteristically, Carey was unfazed, and hit a 46-ball 78 to set up a vital Sussex win. If this start is anything to go by, Sussex will be booking him a pre-match city break on a weekly basis.***Leicestershire were roundly thrashed in their first three games of the Blast, to the extent that coach Paul Nixon had to engage in some firefighting on Twitter.”3 international bowlers, bowled well we hit our shots 5-10 yards away from where we wanted to and that’s the game… we will do the same to the oppo next ….” he replied to a fan, in what appeared to be a case of foolhardy optimism. But lo and behold, in a rain-reduced 11-over game against pre-tournament favourites Nottinghamshire, they blitzed 125 for 3 thanks to Arron Lilley’s 66*, and defended it comfortably.Nixon’s bio says he is an “Ex Eng Cricketer, Leicestershire CCC Head Coach and After Dinner Speaker” – perhaps he should throw prophet in there, too.***Hampshire are longing for the glory days of 2010 and 2012, after a win and two defeats has left them languishing towards the bottom of the South Group.Back when they won the competition, Hampshire were innovators, using a series of top-quality spinners and skiddy medium-pacers, with specialist wicketkeeper Michael Bates often stood up to the stumps for all 20 overs.Hampshire are a much-changed side since their T20 title wins in 2010 and 2012•Getty Images

Their attack is much-changed, but they still have possess an excellent gloveman in the shape of Lewis McManus. His sharp-thinking brought about an MS Dhoni-style run-out in Wednesday night’s loss at Sussex, and he waited for Laurie Evans to leave his crease before whipping off the bails. It was no surprise, then, to learn that Bates has been working with McManus, and that the club are benefitting from his genius behind the stumps despite his premature release.Bates is the subject and co-author of a newly-released book, , in which he opens up about his struggles with the bat and the difficulty of coming to terms with his axing. While it seems unlikely that Bates’ role – keeping wicket and batting in the tail – will become part of the mainstream, his book offers an unusual and intriguing perspective on the changing demands on keepers, and the demise of the specialist.

Rodgers could repeat his Luis Suarez masterlcass with Celtic star

Celtic only made two additions to their first-team squad during the January transfer window as Brendan Rodgers missed out on a number of targets.

German winger Nicolas Kuhn arrived from Austrian side Rapid Wien on a permanent basis, putting pen to paper on a five-and-a-half-year deal, as the first signing.

Football Insider then reported that the Northern Irish head coach was eyeing up a goalkeeper, a left-back, and a centre-forward to bolster his squad, whilst a central midfielder was added to the shopping list after David Turnbull's deadline day move to Cardiff City – per the Daily Record.

However, the Hoops did not land a midfielder, a goalkeeper, or a left-back to fill the voids Rodgers reportedly felt were there throughout the window.

Celtic's search for a striker

Their only piece of incoming business on deadline day was the signing of centre-forward Adam Idah on loan from Norwich City, which was a curious addition on paper.

The 23-year-old had only started 12 Championship games for the Canaries, who were sat outside of the play-off positions, during the first half of the season.

He was not a regular starter for the second division team in England and supporters, therefore, had a justifiable right to be concerned about whether or not he could make an instant impact.

It was also curious as it had been reported that the Hoops had an interest in Dutch marksman Sydney van Hooijdonk, who then joined Norwich on loan from Serie A side Bologna to replace Idah.

Aberdeen striker Bojan Miovski, who has scored 22 goals in 36 games for Aberdeen this season, was also a reported target for the club ahead of the January transfer window.

Celtic opted against swooping for Miovski or van Hooijdonk in the end as they pivoted to a deal for Idah on loan until the end of the season, with no option to buy.

The Hoops must make the most of the young gem whilst they have him and Rodgers could repeat his Luis Suarez masterclass with the talented marksman

Luis Suarez's progression under Brendan Rodgers

Speaking to The Herald recently, the Northern Irish head coach made the point that the Uruguay international was not a prolific scorer for Liverpool before his appointment in 2012.

Rodgers stated that the way his team plays, with attacking, aggressive, football, suits strikers and that Suarez, in particular, benefitted from narrowing his game to focus on his impact in the final third.

This point was made in relation to what Idah's limit is as a player and the potential he has to improve over the weeks and months to come in Scotland.

Luis Suarez

The Hoops boss played a masterclass, as he explained himself, with Suarez and could repeat that with the Norwich loanee ahead of the summer.

Prior to Rodgers' arrival at Liverpool in the summer of 2012, the former Ajax star had racked up 15 goals and six assists in 41 Premier League starts for the Reds in 18 months.

During that time, Suarez averaged between 4.1 and 4.2 shots on goal and between 1.9 and 2.0 key passes per game in the top-flight through the 2010/11 and 2011/12 campaigns.

Rodgers was then brought in from Swansea and helped the centre-forward to become a prolific scorer and creator of goals for the English giants by, as aforementioned, narrowing his game and ensuring that his focus was on making an impact in the box.

This led to the impressive striker taking his average shots per game up to between 5.5 and 5.7 and his average key passes per match up to between 2.7 and 2.8 over the course of the 2012/13 and 2013/14 Premier League campaigns.

His increased output of shots and key passes led to a staggering return of 54 goals and 17 assists in 66 league appearances for Liverpool in Rodgers' first two seasons in charge.

This shows that Suarez went from a goal or an assist every 1.95 games on average pre-Rodgers to one every 0.93 matches under his management, which is a startling improvement.

You could, therefore, partly attribute his incredible success at Anfield to the now-Celtic boss' tactical work and coaching to focus on the forward's best qualities in the final third.

Adam Idah's potential at Celtic

Rodgers has described Idah as a player with "real potential" and could now repeat the masterclass he played with Suarez by narrowing the Norwich loanee's play to what he does inside the box.

The £23k-per-week dynamo has only had 35 touches of the ball in his two Scottish Premiership appearances for the Hoops so far, but has produced two goals and one assist.

During the first half of the 2023/24 campaign, Idah ranked within the bottom 8% of Championship strikers for touches in the opposition penalty area (2.39) per 90.

This suggests that David Wagner's system at Norwich was not creating ample opportunities for the Ireland international to make his mark in the box.

Despite that, the young marksman scored six goals from 5.83 xG in 28 league appearances, 12 of which came as a starter, which speaks to his ruthless nature in front of goal.

Norwich forward Adam Idah.

The Canaries academy graduate, therefore, has proven that he has the finishing ability to take his chances if his teammates can create for him.

His quick start to life at Parkhead also shows that the young gem will not need any time to adapt to Scottish football, which is also a promising sign ahead of the final few months of the campaign.

It is now down to Rodgers to ensure that Idah focuses his game on staying between the width of the penalty box so that he can be in the right positions to score and create goals, as Suarez did for him at Liverpool.

Hopefully, the Hoops head coach will be able to repeat that masterclass once more and the Irish sensation will lead Celtic to glory by the end of the season.
