Rain denied Durban Heat the chance to challenge for a place in the Mzansi Super League playoffs. The Heat finish fourth on the points table, one behind the Tshwane Spartans, who will play the Nelson Mandela Bay Giants on Friday to determine who goes through to meet the Paarl Rocks in Monday’s final. The final pool match of the tournament was abandoned without a ball being bowled to bring the total number of washouts to eight, with the Heat affected in five of those. They had three of their first four games rained off and lost the fourth which meant their first victory came three weeks into the tournament, chasing 182 under lights at Newlands. That started a streak of three wins before they were washed out again last Saturday in Johannesburg, against bottom-of-the-log Jozi Stars. The return fixture in Durban, a must-win match for the Heat, was also unable to go ahead. That means the Stars, the defending MSL champions, collected another two points but ended their campaign winless with seven defeats. The Stars had a new-look leadership department, with Temba Bavuma taking over from Dane Vilas, who captained the Heat this year, and Donovan Miller succeeding interim national team director Enoch Nkwe.Bavuma’s leadership was thought to be on audition for a role with the national side in future and he will be disappointed with the team’s results, although his own form was more pleasing. Bavuma was eighth on the run-scorers’ list with 232 runs at 38.66. Reeza Hendricks, who is likely to feature in white-ball matches for South Africa this summer, was third with 275 runs at 39.28 including three half-centuries. The Stars bowling did not perform as well as expected, with Kagiso Rabada sitting joint-tenth with eight wickets at 27.25 and an economy rate of 8.33.Like the Spartans, Heat completed just five games out of their ten, which affected where the players found themselves on the run and wicket charts. David Miller was 13th, Wihan Lubbe 15th and Alex 16th on the batting list while Malusi Siboto was the Heat’s leading wicket-taker and 15th overall.

Tottenham teenager awaiting debut now tipped to be one of the world’s best

Tottenham have been told they have a teenager who will become one of the world's best players in his position, and he hasn't even made his debut yet.

Spurs youngsters who have impressed Postecoglou this season

Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou is on record stating that the club must keep on improving in terms of academy set up, but there are a few youngsters who have caught the Australian's eye this season.

Tottenham dazzled by £30m forward called the best player in his league

Lilywhites chiefs are “hugely impressed” and looking at his signing.

ByEmilio Galantini Apr 6, 2024

Indeed, perhaps the most noteworthy of them is forward Jamie Donley, who Postecoglou has handed four senior appearances to this season. The 19-year-old has a glowing reputation already, and based off his academy performances, the sky appears to be the limit.

Meanwhile, young centre-back Alfie Dorrington is another teenager who has earned praise from the Lilywhites boss at various points over 2023/2024.

“With the young guys like Jamie, he’s been doing really well with the U21s consistently. Jamie and Alfie Dorrington have really stood out and that’s why they’ve been training with us," said Postecoglou on Donley and Dorrington earlier this season.

"I’ve been really pleased with Jamie and Alfie though, they’ve been working well.”

Ex-Spurs scout Bryan King, speaking to Tottenham News in October, has also said that he's heard "good things" about the pair.

“That experience of training with the first team is very important for the young players. It is a great boost when you get called up to work with the first team, it is like an injection of energy and enthusiasm. You were working with the kids and now all of a sudden you are working with the big boys. It was the same in my day if young players got called in to work with the first team it was a great lift for them.

“If they are not up to the pace or up to the quality then they won’t be back for a little bit. However, these two seem to be impressing the manager and fitting in nicely.

James Maddison with Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou in the Premier League.

“I have heard good things about these two and if they are training with the first team and handling it they must be close to playing for the first team. It is a bonus for the manager to see that he has young players who can step in when other players are injured.”

Alongside Dorrington and Donley, a teenager to watch out for is Lucas Bergvall. The 18-year-old, after his loan at Djurgardens IF, will link up with Spurs in the summer.

Bergvall tipped to become one of the world's best at Spurs

Speaking to Aftonbladet (via Sport Witness), Djurgardens official Peter Kisfaludy has already tipped Bergvall to become one of the world's best midfielders.

“I have had Lucas since November, 2015, when he was nine years old," said Kisfaludy.

"He has always been so extremely talented and I have always had the feeling that he can go as far as he wants and that there is no stopping him. In three, four years, when he is 22-23 years old, he will be one of the world’s best midfielders. He will belong to the top ten in the world among midfielders.”

'Five-day Tests the way to go without a doubt' – Mickey Arthur

Ravi Shastri, Mahela Jayawardene and Chris Gayle also don’t want to “mess with” Test cricket

Sri Lanka coach Mickey Arthur, who is part of the ICC cricket committee that will consider making four-day Tests mandatory as part of the World Test Championship from 2023, has shot down the proposal.Arthur has joined the likes of Virat Kohli, Ben Stokes and Vernon Philander in opposing four-day Test cricket, which is being considered by the ICC in order to free up a calendar that is cramped with too many fixtures and T20 leagues.”Look, I say five-day Test cricket is the way to go,” Arthur said on the eve of Sri Lanka’s third T20I against India in Pune. “Test cricket challenges you – it challenges you mentally, it challenges you physically and it challenges you technically. And a lot of the time on the fifth day, we’ve witnessed a really good Test match that wouldn’t have lasted [otherwise].”A move to cut the fifth day would ease the financial pressure on boards, but Arthur stressed that Test cricket shouldn’t be tampered with because of financial or commercial reasons.”Look, we can talk about financial pressures and that type of stuff,” he said. “[But], I think the fabric of Test cricket shouldn’t be messed with. You want wickets deteriorating on day five, you want thrillers that go all the way, there are a lot of really good exciting draws where one team plays it out. So, I definitely think five-day Test cricket is the way to go without a doubt.”Former Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene, who is also part of the ICC cricket committee, isn’t in favour of four-day Test cricket as well.”We will discuss it in the meeting and I don’t know what will happen after that but my personal opinion is that it should remain five days. I would not want any change,” Jaywardene had told PTI.India coach Ravi Shastri is also not a fan of the proposal. “Four-day Test is nonsense,” he told Indian news channel CNN-News18. “If this goes on we may have limited-overs Tests. There is no need to tamper with five-day Tests. If at all they want to tamper then let the top six sides play five-day Tests and the next six be allowed to play four-day Tests. If you want preserve Tests then let the top six play more against each other. You have the shorter format to popularise the game.”West Indies opener Chris Gayle also joined the other strong voices in rejecting the idea of four-day Test cricket. “I am not a fan of that [four-day Tests]. I’ve played a 100 Test matches,” Gayle said. “A few finish in three days, a few finish in four days, but five days Test cricket is ultimate. It sets the trend. It has been there for ages, so why go and mess with it. If they give other players opportunity to actually experience it as well because it can be a life-changing experience to play five days of Test cricket. It tests your mental state so you can cope in life as well.”The ICC is set to meet in March 2020 to discuss the four-day Test proposal.

Chelsea now willing to do anything to sign "fantastic" Real Madrid star

Following another season of struggle, Todd Boehly and Chelsea have been left looking towards the summer transfer window for solutions once again, which has reportedly seen them turn to a Real Madrid superstar.

Chelsea transfer news

It could be a strange summer for Chelsea. On the one hand, they need reinforcements, and their transfer tactic under Todd Boehly has been to spend their way out of trouble only to make matters worse. On the other hand, that spending is catching up to them. According to reports, the Blues are walking a fine line when it comes to Financial Fair Play after suffering significant financial losses.

ByJack Salveson Holmes Apr 3, 2024

Those losses are hardly a surprise, however, given that Chelsea have splashed the cash like a Premier League and Champions League winning team, but performed like a mid-table side and missed out on previous profits as a result.

Nonetheless, their FFP concerns have not stopped the rumour mill from starting, with links to the likes of Viktor Gyokeres emerging to finally solve Mauricio Pochettino's striker problem. In a big-money deal, the Sporting CP striker would provide the Blues with a major boost of pure finishing ability.

Meanwhile, according to reports in Spain, Chelsea chiefs are now willing to do anything to sign Aurelien Tchouameni this summer. The Frenchman cost Real Marid as much as €80m (£69m) back in 2022, but has struggled for form at times this season, casting doubts over his Bernabeu future.

It will still be a difficult deal to negotiate though, given that the midfielder currently has no plans to leave Madrid this summer and Chelsea's position outside of European football as things stand. It would be one of the more surprising deals of the summer if the Blues, in their current position, managed to tempt Tchouameni into swapping Madrid for Stamford Bridge. What's more, Chelsea's FFP situation suggests that they're unlikely to land such a big-money deal.

"Fantastic" Tchouameni would unlock Fernandez

When looking at Chelsea's midfield, it's hard to believe that they're sitting in mid-table. Not only do they have a big-money signing who impressed at Brighton & Hove Albion last season to earn a move in the form of Moises Caicedo, but they also have a World Cup winner in Enzo Fernandez. But perhaps a piece is missing. And that piece is a player of Tchouameni's calibre.

The Real Madrid man would finally unlock the best version of Fernandez and partner Caicedo at the heart of Chelsea's midfield, with his stats painting a positive picture.

Carlo Ancelotti may need convincing to part ways with Tchouameni too, having previously sung his midfielder's praises, via TNT Sports: “Without three centre-backs, Tchouameni played a fantastic game as a centre-back. It's an emergency now, but we understand he's a fantastic player in every place you put him. He's good as a number six, but also as a centre-back.”

Josh Philippe leaves the nerves behind in Big Bash final heroics

He showed a new level of maturity, typified by his innings in the final when, despite the pressure of the occasion, he did not throw his wicket away

Andrew McGlashan09-Feb-2020Josh Philippe recalled the feeling of being “terrified” on his Big Bash debut two years ago, as he was named Player of the Match after producing the dominant innings of the 2020 final to lead the Sydney Sixers to the title.Philippe hit 52 off 29 balls in a game that was reduced to 12 overs per side – few expected a match to even be possible – which ensured the Sixers overcame a mid-innings stutter to post a total that proved well out of reach for the Melbourne Stars after their top order folded. It capped a golden finish to the tournament for Philippe who made three half-centuries in his last four innings, lifting his overall tally to 487 runs, after a period mid-tournament where he hit a lean patch.Philippe started his BBL career with the Perth Scorchers – he plays state cricket for Western Australia – and his debut was against the Sydney Sixers in 2017 before he was lured east to join the club with Steven Smith playing a significant part in the move.He began in the middle order before shifting up midway through last season and this year has shown a new level of maturity to his game, typified by his innings in the final when, despite the pressure of the occasion, the reduced overs and not getting a huge amount of strike, he did not throw his wicket away.”When I played my first Big Bash game I was terrified, so I definitely think after getting a few games under your belt you get used to a lot of the external pressure and noise that you don’t really get playing state cricket,” he said. “When there’s twenty or thirty thousand people compared to a hundred it’s a different feel. It’s definitely something I’ve worked on and comes with playing a lot of games.”I’ve had a few games this year where I haven’t [seen it through], I’ve got out and it’s really cost us. A few of them stuck in the back of my mind. I just knew if I was out there towards the back end, it’s funny it somehow gets easier, you might nick a four, and you get away and it’s a different game so I just try to take it as deep as I can.”Philippe said that the thought the game could be abandoned without any play – which would have given the Sixers the title as hosts of the final – perhaps helped reduce any pre-match nerves but he still surprised himself by how calm he remained.”I guess looking at the forecast it continued to get worse, we almost thought we probably weren’t going to get on at all. That’s not how we wanted to do it, we really wanted to play in front of our home crowd. When you aren’t expecting to play you don’t get especially nervous, I was actually incredibly calm last night and all day today. When we started I still remained calm which surprised me a bit.”The Sydney Sixers players soak in the win•Getty Images

Philippe’s growth this season was lauded by his BBL captain Moises Henriques as he showed the range of gears he has as a batsman.”What he has done this year, we’ve seen him bat in many different modes throughout the season,” he said. “We all know he can whack it everywhere around the park but you can’t score as many runs as he did throughout the season without composure and making the right decisions at the right times. Not only just whacking it around the park but knowing how to build an innings and get through some tough times through the 20-over period.”A season like Philippe has had in the BBL will continue the push for what feels like an inevitable Australia call-up before too long, although whether he can force himself into the planning for the T20 World Cup in October remains to be seen. He has a deal with Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL which, if he isn’t sat on the bench, could be another important learning experience particularly in his development against spin.”The destiny is there – it is in his hands,” Henriques said. “He has definitely got the talent to go on but it is up to him. As I’ve said about the weather, you can’t predict the future. You don’t want to put any more pressure on young men than what they already put on themselves. He is just a great kid with a great head on his shoulders. If he keeps doing the right things, who knows what will happen.”For the player himself, he was just thinking about more short-term practicalities. He was due to fly back to Perth on Sunday afternoon before jumping on another flight on Tuesday as part of Western Australia’s Sheffield Shield squad with the competition resuming on Friday.”My game’s developed so much over the last year and I think I’m really learning how to handle myself in pressure situations,” he said. “You never know until you get the opportunity. I’m just going to try and get as many runs as I can and see what happens.”

Everton looking at another free signing with move for £75,000-a-week player

As Everton look to complete their fight for survival on the pitch, reports indicate that the summer transfer window is all about finding bargain buys in an attempt to comply with the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules.

Everton transfer news

Everton have already flown too close to the sun more than once in the last year or so, resulting in a points deduction on two occasions. Without losing what eventually turned out to be eight points, the Toffees would be sat comfortably in mid-table with safety all but secure. Thanks to consequences for actions away from Goodison Park, however, Sean Dyche's side are now just two points adrift of the relegation zone with the drop still a very real prospect.

Everton must bin £112k-p/w star who's now worth less than Tarkowski

ByEthan Lamb Apr 18, 2024

It's a consequence that Everton won't want to feel again any time soon and the summer transfer window should help towards that. Reports have already emerged linking the likes of Amadou Onana and Jarrad Branthwaite with big-money departures in two moves that would help balance the books at Goodison Park.

Amadou Onana for Everton

It's then about spending wisely, which the Toffees may well do, having been linked with pending free agents such as Ben Johnson at West Ham United and now Leicester City's Wilfred Ndidi.

According to TuttoJuve, Everton are eyeing a move to sign Ndidi alongside Juventus, West Ham, Crystal Palace, Sevilla, Getafe and Fenerbahce. Once considered a top Premier League midfielder, Ndidi dropped down to the Championship with Leicester and is now on course to leave as a free agent when his contract expires at the end of the season.

It must be said that signing the Nigerian could be a wise piece of business from Everton, who would likely be replacing Onana if he decides to leave this summer. Selling one star in a big-money deal before welcoming another in a free deal and only paying his reported £75k per-week salary may well be the perfect start when it comes to making up for previous transfer mistakes.

"Incredible" Ndidi can replace Onana

Whilst it's difficult to replace the potential that Onana has, swapping that potential for the experience of Ndidi wouldn't exactly be a bad move. Still just 27 years old too, the midfielder appears to have plenty left in the tank to take Everton into mid-table and away from safety next season. After all, it's worth noting that this is a player who has featured in a side battling for Europe and in the Champions League before.

Ndidi earned plenty of praise during his time in the Premier League, including from former Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers, who previously said: "He is an incredible player. The offensive players get the credit but he does the dirty work. He has this brain for the game, where he can smell danger and always finds himself there. The timing of his challenge is very good and he's up there with the top players at winning the ball back."
