‘THE LAST VAPO’

Mathews the hero as Sri Lanka seal a stunning game

The old pro picked up four wickets to prevent West Indies from running away with the show

The Report by Andrew Fidel Fernando01-Mar-2020

Angelo Mathews is a key figure for Sri Lanka•AFP

Fabian Allen was on a rampage. He’d struck three sixes (one of them 98 metres long) plus two fours, and was on 37 off 14 balls. He’d just crashed one over cover, and seemed set to close out the game, only nine runs needed off the last five deliveries. But Angelo Mathews, went back through the years, resurrected what seemed for so long to be a dead-and-buried version of himself, and sharpened the next ball with considerable bowling wit. Allen tried to swing it over midwicket for what would have effectively been the match-sealing six. But Mathews had taken just enough pace off, and Kusal Mendis was standing at just the right place to take the catch above his head, maybe two feet in from the boundary. This was the moment this ebbing, flowing game was won by Sri Lanka – West Indies’ No. 10 and 11 unable to seriously challenge the target with only four balls remaining. Sri Lanka’s batsmen had combined beautifully to get the team to 307, but it was Mathews who really clinched the game. With captain Dimuth Karunaratne missing his usual death bowler in Nuwan Pradeep, who left the field clutching his leg after 4.3 overs, Mathews was required to deliver his full quota – the first time he’d done this since way back in July 2015. He took 4 for 59.Angelo Mathews, winning a match with the ball again. It would have seemed such a fantasy even six months ago. That West Indies even got close to this target was down to an outstanding 111-run opening partnership between Sunil Ambris and Shai Hope. The former made a run-a-ball 60. The latter hit his third fifty of the series and collected the top score of the game for the second time in three matches, with 72. Nicholas Pooran was shunted up the order to No. 3, and hit 50 off 61 balls himself. Captain Kieron Pollard also made a strong run at this target, making 49 off 50.But both Pooran and Pollard – batsmen who could have taken the game away if they had been allowed to survive – were dismissed by Mathews, then at the death, he claimed the wickets of Jason Holder and Allen as well. Earlier, he had been the only batsman in Sri Lanka’s top seven not to make 25. And yet, he almost undoubtedly played the most definitive hand this game.Kieron Pollard holds very little back•AFP

It had been three good partnerships that propelled Sri Lanka to their imposing score, on what actually seemed a slower-than-normal Pallekele surface. First, Avishka Fernando and Dimuth Karunaratne made 60 together off 62 balls. After the openers fell, the two Kusals – Mendis and Perera – came together to produce perhaps the best batting surge of the match, totaling 89 off 74 in each other’s company, in the middle overs no less. Towards the end of the innings, Dhananjaya de Silva and Thisara Perera made 64 off 50 balls together. There were no star batsmen, really. Just a series of excellent contributions, from which two in particular stood out. Mendis’ 55 off 48 was full of efficient sweeps, ferocious pulls, and a flat-out refusal to allow West Indies’ spinners to bowl cheap overs. Later, de Silva had a little luck while starting his innings, his mis-hits only just carrying above the outstretched hands of infielders, while edges skimmed past the keeper and brought him boundaries. But he too made a half century, eventually settling into his graceful batting self – backing away and blasting Alzarri Joseph through the covers on one occasion, then reaching his fifty with a delightful aerial flick over square leg. He made 51 off 47.West Indies’ effort in the field was frustrated by their own continuing indiscipline, both with the ball where they sprayed it around too much, and in the field where they were sloppy yet again. But it was also hampered by injury – Allen unable to deliver a single ball, because he hurt his shoulder while patrolling the boundary. They also had a bowler take a clump of wickets – Joseph finishing with figures of 4 for 65, each of his victims an important opposition batsman. But they paid for being too loose through the middle overs in particular, firing too many down the legside, and allowing partnerships to bloom and then flourish. Pollard and Roston Chase were the only bowlers to go at less than six an over, but even they were around the 5.1 mark. From among the remaining Sri Lankans, Wanindu Hasaranga had another outstanding outing with the ball, that googly once again causing problems as he returned 1 for 41 from his 10 overs. Isuru Udana was the only other bowler to take a wicket for Sri Lanka, but he conceded 76. There were three run outs in the West Indies innings – a further indication of the improvement in Sri Lanka’s fielding in recent weeks.

Clement must forget Lundstram & tie down Rangers "warrior" for 2024/25

Glasgow Rangers have just six games of the 2023/24 campaign as they aim to win their first domestic treble in over 20 years.

Not since the 2002/03 season have the Light Blues won all the domestic prizes on offer, but if Philippe Clement can motivate his players to six consecutive wins, then they have a wonderful chance of ending that two-decade wait.

Although the next few weeks will see the Belgian coach focus on the remaining matches in the Premiership and the Scottish Cup final, he will be thinking about how to improve his squad for next season.

He could be set to overhaul the playing squad, as several members of the team are simply not good enough to take the club to the next level.

Several players are out of contract in the summer, which could see the manager free up some of the wage bill.

Rangers players out of contract at the end of the season

In total, six of the current first team squad look set to be released by the Light Blues once the season comes to a halt.

Kemar Roofe

John Lundstram, Jon McLaughlin, Kemar Roofe, Ryan Jack, Borna Barisic, and Leon Balogun could all find themselves with new clubs in the coming months, yet will Clement perhaps offer a couple of them an extension?

Lundstram and Balogun are perhaps the two who have made the biggest impact this season.

John Lundstram is attracting interest

A few months ago, as Rangers were in the midst of an 11-game winning streak, Lundstram was performing well at the heart of the midfield, certainly enjoying a purple patch of form.

Indeed, since Clement took over from Michael Beale in mid-October, the former Sheffield United midfielder had missed just one match – a 2-0 win over Motherwell on Christmas Eve – and it looked as though a contract renewal was inevitable.

Recently, however, the Light Blues have stuttered. Lundstram’s purple patch was exactly that, as he failed to inspire the club to wins over Celtic, Ross County and Dundee, failing to exert any sort of influence in order to take the game by the scruff of the neck.

According to the Daily Record, Turkish side Trabzonspor are stepping up their interest in securing the 30-year-old, as he can now discuss terms with other clubs due to his expiring contract.

Ipswich Town were another club to be showing some interest in bringing Lundstram back down south, especially as they stand on the cusp of promotion to the Premier League and could require someone with experience in the English top flight.

Lundstram currently earns £22k-per-week, but at the moment, he isn’t delivering performances worthy of this wage – having looked particularly poor in the costly draw with Dundee. It is looking increasingly likely that Clement will need to move players out of the door before making any signings, especially as his budget for the summer is unclear.

The midfielder has done well in patches for the Gers, but it should be time for both parties to move on, giving Clement the licence to use his freed up wages on younger, more sellable assets.

Lundstram is the main talking point regarding who of the six players should be offered a new deal, but perhaps it could be Balogun who is the one to profit from his impressive showings this season.

Leon Balogun’s statistics for Rangers this season

To say Rangers signing Balogun last summer on a free transfer was a surprise was an understatement, especially as it appeared to come out of the blue.

The veteran centre-back spent two years at the Glasgow side between 2020 and 2022, winning the Premiership and Scottish Cup along with helping the club reach the Europa League final, but it appeared Giovanni van Bronckhorst didn’t quite see him in his future plans.

Leon Balogun

A season at QPR saw Balogun make 16 appearances in the Championship, scoring once, and it looked as though his career was going to slowly unwind at a series of lower-league clubs.

That was until Beale secured his services on a one-year contract last summer and, on the surface, adding some experience looked like it could prove beneficial.

“He is extremely well-liked by everyone inside the club, and we are very happy to have someone with his experience and leadership qualities re-joining our squad,” said Beale upon his arrival back in Glasgow.

“Naturally he will integrate back into the club very quickly and he understands fully our way of working and style of play.”

The 35-year-old started only once under Beale before the Englishman was sacked following a 3-1 defeat to Aberdeen, but he was given more opportunities under Clement between October and February.

Indeed, the Nigerian defender started six of the first eight Premiership matches under Clement, while also starring in the League Cup final back in December as the £8k-per-week centre-back showcased his defensive abilities.

Among his teammates, Balogun currently ranks sixth for accurate passes per game (41.2) in the top flight, along with ranking sixth for accurate long balls per game (2.7), first for interceptions (1.3) and for clearances (3.7) per game, indicating how important he has been to the first team squad since joining.

Leon Balogun's QPR statistics.

Having suffered a facial injury against Livingston in February, Balogun missed several weeks before returning to the starting XI against Hearts at Hampden, which saw the Gers keep a clean sheet.

Clement hailed the former Wigan defender as a “warrior” following his injury, and it appears he is ready to contribute in the next six matches.

After his Hampden display, Balogun discussed his future at the club, saying: “Has there been talks on my future? Not yet. I really don't know what will happen. I think those decisions will be made within the club within the next few weeks.”

Clement looking at Ryan Kent 2.0 who wants to sign for Rangers

Rangers appear to be showing interest in a player who could turn out to be the next Ryan Kent

ByRoss Kilvington Apr 24, 2024

He wouldn’t cost an arm and a leg wage-wise, while his experience could see him help others around him, either on the pitch or in the dressing room.

Balogun will be 36 ahead of the 2024/25 campaign, but while Lundstram should be shown the door, the veteran ace could be worth keeping around for a little while longer.

Talks begin over Tottenham exits as move for £50 million striker possible

Tottenham have already begun discussions over multiple exits with a move for one "world-class" striker "on the cards", according to a report this week.

Spurs set for summer overhaul as Ange calls for "drastic" change

Reliable Spurs source Paul O'Keefe recently shared news that the club are open to offers for over a dozen members of Ange Postecoglou's squad this summer, coming after the Lilywhites head coach pleaded for "drastic" change.

Tottenham could re-sign £30 million player who Dele Alli called fantastic

Daniel Levy let him go years ago.

ByEmilio Galantini May 10, 2024

It's been a regrettable end to the Premier League season for Spurs, who all but have to settle for a Europa League place as Aston Villa take cruise control in the race for fourth and Champions League qualification next term.

Unai Emery's side hold the mathematical advantage and could secure fourth in their next two games, regardless of what else happens in north London. The north Londoners have tasted bitter defeat in four of their last five top flight matches, including a few drubbings, and it highlights the work which still has to be done on Postecoglou's team.

"We need change. Change has to happen," Postecoglou said on his Spurs team. "You can’t want to alter your course and expect the same people are going to be on that.

"It’s just not going to happen. We’ve had two windows and we’ve had some development of players, for sure, but when I say we’ve still got a long way to go, that’s what I’m talking about.

Tottenham's last five Premier League games

Liverpool 4-2 Tottenham

Chelsea 2-0 Tottenham

Tottenham 2-3 Arsenal

Newcastle 4-0 Tottenham

Tottenham 3-1 Crystal Palace

"It’s impossible to say you’re going to have drastic change and yet expect everyone to be on that journey. It’s not for the want of trying. It’s just that we’re going to play a certain way, we’re going to train a certain way and we’re going to have a certain mindset. And that’s not for everyone."

In terms of who could leave, we can take a pretty good guess when it comes to the 12 players mentioned by O'Keefe. Bryan Gil, Giovani Lo Celso, Troy Parrott, Joe Rodon, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Richarlison, Tanguy Ndombele, Sergio Reguilon, Japhet Tanganga, Manor Solomon and Djed Spence are the players linked with Tottenham exits ahead of this summer, with all being mentioned at least once by media sources.

More recently, some reports have claimed that Tottenham are also open to offers for both Emerson Royal and Yves Bissouma, so it appears barely anybody is safe.

Tottenham begin exit discussions as deal for Ivan Toney possible

Now, according to Football Insider, Tottenham have already begun discussions over multiple summer exit moves. Chairman Daniel Levy is seeking ways to bolster summer funds and trim the squad down, especially as a deal for Brentford striker Ivan Toney is "on the cards".

The "world-class" striker could cost as much as £50 million, but he could be worth that amount given Postecoglou's need for a new number nine to replace Harry Kane. Toney scored 20 league goals last season before his ban for alleged gambling breaches, so there is little question he'd strengthen Spurs.

Jason Gillespie in limbo as Covid-19 travel bans leave county coaches grounded

Michael di Venuto and Dave Houghton are also out of the UK and awaiting developments

Matt Roller22-Apr-2020

Jason Gillespie is used to long-haul flights thanks to a long playing career and holding down coaching roles in two different countries, but his March travel itinerary would make even the most seasoned traveller wince.Soon after he flew from Adelaide to Cape Town via Dubai for Sussex’s pre-season camp, it became clear that the coronavirus pandemic meant it was unwise for the county’s squad to be overseas, meaning that after a week in South Africa he was on the move again, flying back to the UK. And 48 hours after landing, amid constant conversations with the club’s hierarchy, he was in the air heading back to Australia, when it became clear the county season would be postponed for some time.”It was a bit of whirlwind, that’s for sure,” Gillespie said. “The situation changed quite quickly, and quite considerably in a matter of days. The plan was to try and get everyone back safely to the UK. I was in my flat in Hove and had a couple of conversations with our CEO [Rob Andrew].”The club said: look, you’re probably best to be at home with your family. I had to self-isolate for two weeks. I’m fortunate that my mum lives in a little house just round the corner from where we are, so I stayed at hers. I had the kids coming down with my groceries and leaving them on the back porch.”ALSO READ: The Hundred’s future uncertain as ECB board prepares for postponementSelf-isolation complete, Gillespie is back with his family and feels safe: there has not been a new confirmed case of Covid-19 in South Australia for three days, and there are signs that an end to lockdown may not be too far away. But there is a complication. Australian citizens are currently banned from travelling abroad indefinitely, and while there is naturally little clarity on the likely duration of restrictions, Prime Minister Scott Morrison has repeatedly suggested a six-month time frame is likely. That means that if the delayed English season is able to get underway – and the ECB board will meet on Thursday to discuss contingency planning – there is no guarantee that Gillespie will be able to get back to fulfil his role.”We just have to wait and see,” he said. “There’s so many logistical things to consider. If the season does get up and running, I’d probably have to self-isolate in the UK before I can link up with the squad – if I can even leave Australia.”I haven’t been thinking about it too much, because we simply don’t know. We’re all in the same boat, where health and safety are the priorities. We’ll have to wait and see: I know [Surrey coach] Michael di Venuto is in that boat too, and a good mate of mine who lives here in South Australia Mark Cosgrove plays at Leicestershire. What does he do?”Like Gillespie, Surrey coach Michael di Venuto is in Australia with his family•Getty Images

Derbyshire coach Dave Houghton is in the same position as di Venuto and Gillespie: he is currently in Zimbabwe with his family, with no clarity over when he will be able to return to the UK. Other non-British coaches – Adi Birrell (Hampshire), Stuart Law (Middlesex) and James Franklin (Durham) – are currently in England.Similarly, while several counties have cancelled or deferred the contracts of their overseas signings – Gillespie hopes that Travis Head will be able to join Sussex in 2021 if he is unable to play for the club this year – there are question marks hanging over several cricketers who count as ‘local’ players via EU passports or the Kolpak loophole, but are not currently in the UK. While Dane Vilas and Simon Harmer, for example, are in England, Stiaan van Zyl, David Wiese and Vernon Philander are among various players in South Africa with no clarity over the prospects of leaving.ALSO READ: Little appetite for upheaval as ECB begin review into Watmore appointmentThere is some hope that Thursday’s ECB board meeting might provide some kind of clarity about the likelihood that a season will be possible, but it seems probable that those overseas will be left in limbo until government advice is updated and an end to the UK’s lockdown comes into sight. For the time being, then, there is little that Gillespie can do to change things. Instead, he has been reaching out to his squad to keep in touch – “the mental side of all this is really important” – and is enjoying an unusually long period at home with his family.”That’s the one good thing – I don’t think we’ve ever spent this much time together as a family ever, with my job and the nature of cricket. I’m doing my running to keep busy, and one of my sons has challenged me to slam dunk a full-sized basketball, so I’ve been doing all kinds of jumping training, skipping, lots of plyometrics.”On my birthday [Monday] I did a jumping session with the kids, and slam-dunked a size three, so my son said: ‘dad, why don’t you try and dunk the bigger one?’ With my last jump I reckon I ripped my quad, because I’ve been struggling to move for the last few days.” Needless to say, struggling to move may prove to be a theme of the next few months.

Graças a Deus deu tudo certo – concluiu.
