Derby must give 19 y/o starlet a chance to impress after Hourihane exit

Derby County have wasted no time in freshening up their squad for the next campaign, releasing a number of key first-team faces who presumably can't make the cut up a level anymore.

Conor Hourihane's name was arguably the most surprising from the list of names that were released at the end of their contract by Paul Warne considering the former Barnsley man was captain during the League One promotion success that has just occurred.

Korey Smith has also been allowed to leave from the central midfield spots at Pride Park, and with Ebou Adams heading back to Cardiff City for the meantime after starring on loan and Max Bird now on the books at Bristol City officially, Derby will need to add in bodies in the middle of the park soon.

Away from splashing the cash moving up a division, the Rams could be tempted to give one young starlet more minutes and a chance to impress even with Championship football around the corner.

Adebayo Fapetu's numbers for Derby

Previously on the roster at Arsenal at youth level, Adebayo Fapetu will no doubt be taking inspiration from the likes of Eiran Cashin and Louie Sibley in trying to catapult himself into the senior mix soon who never looked back after advancing through the youth ranks in Derbyshire.

Fapetu is an exciting talent in his own right too, however, and could be just what Derby need to add some more energy and tenacity to their ageing squad.

Already offloading many of the veterans from their squad, this could now be Fapetu's time to shine after a promising Premier League 2 campaign.

The 19-year-old midfielder managed to register a goal and an assist from the centre of the park for the U21s across 15 appearances this season, which even resulted in the ex-Gunner being given a first-team chance in the FA Cup by Warne against Crewe Alexandra late into 2023.

He will now be champing at the bit to be given more first-team opportunities, pouncing on his opportunity now to give Warne a dilemma in the middle of the pitch with a number of midfield targets reportedly already on Derby's radar.

It wouldn't be out of the ordinary for the Rams to start bleeding in more youth like Fapetu gradually, considering their impressive track record with starlets in the past.

Derby's track record with youngsters

You only need to cast an eye to the squad that achieved promotion to see Derby's excellent record with giving youngsters time to develop and flourish, with Cashin, Sibley, Bird and Liam Thompson all playing major roles in Championship football being secured.

Cashin and Bird have been mainstays of the Rams first-team for a number of years now, and with Bird now leaving for good to Ashton Gate, Fapetu could want to now test himself in the senior ranks and become an understudy to an experienced face before excelling down the line in similar fashion.

Fapetu will take some encouragement from reading the table above, knowing the route to the first team can be a beneficial if long-winded one, but he will have to sign a new contract to stay put first with his contract expiring next month.

Yet, with the retained list confirming that talks are underway, Fapetu could have a background role next season at Pride Park in the first-team.

Whereas, Hourihane will look to see out his career with a brand-new club after walking away from Warne's men just weeks after promotion glory.

Nitin Menon replaces Nigel Llong in Elite panel of umpires for 2020-21

Menon becomes the third Indian after S Venkataraghavan and S Ravi to make it to the Elite panel

India’s Nitin Menon has been included in the ICC Elite panel of umpires for the 2020-21 season after the annual review conducted by the game’s governing body. At 36, Menon is one of the youngest to be included in the Elite panel. He was earlier part of the International panel and will replace England’s Nigel Llong in the Elite roster.A panel consisting of ICC general manager of cricket Geoff Allardice (chairman), former player Sanjay Manjrekar, and match referees Ranjan Madugalle and David Boon made the selection. The ICC monitors umpires’ standing through various parameters, including on-field decision-making, the number of reviews the match official has got right, and conduct on the field. Accordingly, points are tallied and umpires are ranked internally. As per ESPNcricinfo’s data, Llong has had the highest percentage (36.2%) of his reviewed decisions overturned in Tests since September 28, 2017.Menon, who began his umpiring career in 2017, has officiated in three Tests, 24 ODIs and 16 T20Is in men’s cricket. He has also stood in ten women’s T20Is, including the 2018 and 2020 T20 World Cups. After S Venkataraghavan and S Ravi, he is the third umpire from India to make it to the Elite panel.”It’s a great honour and matter of pride for me to be named in the Elite panel,” Menon said in an ICC release. “To be officiating regularly along with the leading umpires and referees of the world is something that I always dreamt of and the feeling has yet to sink in.”Having already officiated in Tests, ODIs and T20Is as well as in ICC events, I understand the great responsibility that comes with the job. I also feel this is a responsibility on me to take Indian umpires forward and help them by sharing my experiences.”Adrian Griffith, the ICC’s senior manager of umpires and referees, congratulated Menon, saying he “has come through our pathway system with very consistent performances”.Last year, England’s Michael Gough and West Indies’ Joel Wilson were promoted to the Elite panel, while Ravi was omitted from the list.’Not surprised by Menon’s selection’ – TaufelTaufel, who has worked extensively with Indian umpires, said he was not “surprised” by Menon’s elevation. “I’m not surprised by his selection as his talent was evident some years ago,” Taufel told ESPNcricinfo. “But again it shows that it takes many years to get to world-class, through commitment, dedication, resilience and a growth mindset. With Nitin joining the top group, a role model is there for many Indian umpires who aspire to be the best. Hopefully, it will encourage the BCCI to keep investing in their development programs for match officials.”ICC Elite panel of umpires: Aleem Dar, Kumar Dharmasena, Marais Erasmus, Chris Gaffaney, Michael Gough, Nitin Menon, Richard Illingworth, Richard Kettleborough, Bruce Oxenford, Paul Reiffel, Rod Tucker and Joel WilsonICC Elite panel of match referees: David Boon, Chris Broad, Jeff Crowe, Ranjan Madugalle, Andy Pycroft, Richie Richardson and Javagal Srinath

Birmingham to hold talks with 3-5-2 manager who’s never lost at St Andrew’s

Following Tony Mowbray's decision to step down as Birmingham City manager, the Blues are reportedly set to open talks with his potential replacement.

Birmingham manager news

The 60-year-old initially came in following Birmingham's nightmare Wayne Rooney experiment which took the club from play-off contention to a relegation battle they eventually lost, with Gary Rowett failing to turn things around in his interim spell.

There may have been some hope that Mowbray would resume his role this summer, but the club have since confirmed his decision to step down permanently.

Reacting to the news, Birmingham City Owner and Chairman of the Board Tom Wagner told the club's official website: “We are disappointed that Tony will not be coming back to lead the team forward but respect his decision to put his health and his family first.

"In a short period of time at Blues Tony demonstrated excellent leadership skills and a work ethic that galvanised all around him. He is an outstanding human being and will always be welcome at St. Andrew’s."

ByTom Cunningham May 16, 2024

Despite their disappointment, however, the Blues have now switched their attention towards finding a swift replacement. According to Alan Nixon on his Patreon, Birmingham are set to open talks with Paul Heckingbottom in the coming days over making the former Sheffield United boss their next manager.

Heckingbottom was sacked by Sheffield United earlier in the Premier League season and has since been linked with the likes of Sunderland, albeit whilst remaining without a job. An experienced manager in the EFL, Heckingbottom would be tasked with taking Birmingham straight back to the Championship next season.

Heckingbottom has promotion experience that Birmingham need

If Birmingham are to secure promotion back to the second tier at the first time of asking then welcoming a manager who knows all about doing exactly that is the way to do it. And Heckingbottom certainly knows how. The manager, who prefers to play a 3-5-2 formation, previously won the League One play-offs with Barnsley, defeating Millwall in the 2015/16 final. Meanwhile, he also knows a thing or two about winning at St Andrew's.

Paul Heckingbottom vs Birmingham City (via Transfermarkt)

16/17 – Birmingham 0-3 Barnsley

16/17 – Barnsley 2-2 Birmingham

17/18 – Barnsley 2-0 Birmingham

21/22 – Birmingham 1-2 Sheffield United

22/23 – Sheffield United 1-1 Birmingham

22/23 – Birmingham 1-2 Sheffield United

It's a three-game unbeaten run in Birmingham that Heckingbottom will be keen to keep hold of for as long as possible, especially if he steps into the dugout at St Andrew's this summer.

The 46-year-old certainly ticks a fair few boxes at the club, as they look to make up for lost time and get their next appointment right. Meanwhile, Heckingbottom, himself, is still looking for his next job after leaving Sheffield United earlier in the campaign, making this a good match.

Ashley Giles 'concerned' by Pakistan trio's positive Covid-19 tests

Insists series is not yet in doubt despite test results

George Dobell23-Jun-2020Ashley Giles has admitted he is “concerned” by the news of Pakistan players testing positive for Covid-19 but insists at this stage he does not think the series against England is in doubt. The Pakistan squad was planning on leaving for England on Sunday with a Test series scheduled to start on August 5. But it was announced on Monday that three Pakistan players – Haider Ali, Shadab Khan and Haris Rauf – had tested positive for the virus. Other Pakistan squad members are expected to receive their test results on Tuesday. But while Giles, the managing director of England men’s cricket, conceded the situation was far from ideal, he did not feel the news put the series in doubt.ALSO READ: Three Pakistan players test positive for Covid-19″It is a concern,” Giles said. “Obviously I’m most concerned about those players who tested positive and their welfare.”At the moment, I don’t think the series is in doubt. We are far enough away from the start of the Test series to not worry about that too much at the moment. There are some more test results coming out later from the rest of the group so we will see what those say, but we are still hopefully that the Pakistan team will be arriving in the country fairly soon.”With numbers of Covid-19 cases in Pakistan rising sharply and now reduced to pre-lockdown levels in the UK, the management of both sides had agreed it would be wise for the Pakistan squad to travel to England as soon as possible. It now looks likely the squad will be isolated at Derbyshire CCC, which features a hotel within its ground, for a few weeks. The original plan to train at Edgbaston was thrown into doubt as the ground does not contain an on-site hotel.”The situation in Pakistan is not great at the moment and our thoughts go out to the whole country,” Giles continued. “But clearly it is important we get that team and those guys in our country and we can get on with that series. We need to get our opposition in country. Anything that puts that at risk is clearly a problem.Giles has insisted that Pakistan’s tour is not yet in doubt•Getty Images

“There are a number of hurdles to cross. That’s why we are trying to create environments that mitigate as much risk as we possibly can. All of this carries uncertainty, even to a degree the West Indies series, because we know how fast-moving this situation has been around the world. We have been very careful at every step, but do we really know what’s round the corner? No.ALSO READ: ‘Big risk’ – PCB director of sports medicine on England tour”It’s such a far-reaching issue, global issue that is affecting everyone. It’s far more important than sport. But we are hopeful that if we can get international sport on, it will be a real fillip for many people around the world.”Whatever doubts there may be over the Pakistan series, preparation for the series between England and West Indies are continuing. England’s 30-man training group will arrive at the Ageas Bowl on Tuesday afternoon to begin their ‘behind closed doors’ training period, while West Indies are starting a three-day inter-squad warm-up match at Emirates Old Trafford. Each member of the England squad, including support staff, will be tested for Covid-19 upon arrival and will be expected to isolate in the hotel – mainly in their bedrooms – for the first 24 hours and until the results of those tests are confirmed. The first day of training will be on Thursday. Half the group will train each morning and the other half each afternoon. They start a three-day practice match, which could yet carry first-class status, on July 1.

Tottenham ready to make early move to sign "incredible" £60m star for Ange

Tottenham are expected to start talks with a Premier League side soon as they look to land a £60m player this summer.

Tottenham transfer rumours

The 2024 summer transfer window is not yet open but Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou already has an idea about the type of players he is looking to sign.

Ranking Tottenham Hotspur's 10 best managers by win percentage

Where does Ange Postecoglou rank among Tottenham’s best managers?

ByMark Marston Jun 1, 2024

Speaking late last month, the Australian was asked about attack being an area he wants to strengthen at Tottenham, to which he responded: "Yeah, absolutely. It's no secret. You saw the way we finished the season. We obviously lost Richy and Timo as well with injuries but we're fairly light in that area.

"We started last season with Manor [Solomon] and [Ivan] Perisic and we were quite healthy in that front third in terms of numbers, but as the year went on it became pretty evident that we need to bulk up. We're in Europe as well next year so we'll have more games and it's definitely an area of the park we'll need to strengthen."

Since then, the Lilywhites have been tipped to make a move for Stuttgart striker Serhou Guirassy, who enjoyed an excellent campaign as he helped his side qualify for the Champions League and finish second in the Bundesliga. Reports also claim Spurs could finally pull the trigger to bring Marcus Edwards back to north London after the winger left Tottenham for Portugal during Mauricio Pochettino's time in charge of the club. Athletic Bilbao's Nico Williams is also another player on the north London outfit's radar.

Tottenham ready to make early move to sign "incredible" £60m star

However, another high-profile name has seemingly caught the eye of those in a position of power at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as Football Transfers are reporting that Spurs are expected to initiate discussions with Crystal Palace within the next two weeks regarding the potential signing of attacker, Eberechi Eze.

Eze scored 11 and assisted four in 27 Premier League games across 2023/24, with his displays earning him a call-up to England's provisional Euro 2024 squad. The 25-year-old has been a standout option at Palace for several years now, earning high praise from teammate Joel Ward in 2023.

“Ebs’ quality is incredible, with what he does on the ball, the way he manipulates it and the way he just seems to glide over the pitch – it’s mesmerising at times. It’s fully deserved, and he’s doing the other side of the game as well, which we need him to do in midfield. He’s taking control and linking up beautifully with the front guys. All-round, he’s developing, he’s moving up, and his future will be very, very bright. They certainly make my life a little bit easier when I can just give them the ball, and they go and do their magic!”

Eze is under contract at Selhurst Park until 2027. However, according to the report from Football Transfers, the 25-year-old expects Palace to honour an agreement to let him leave if Tottenham meet the club's asking price of approximately €70 million (£60m), with Spurs ready to make an early move.

Zak Crawley makes most of chance as second Test ends in predictable draw

Young batsman reaches half-century at scene of career-best Test knock

The Report by Valkerie Baynes17-Aug-2020

Zak Crawley cuts past backward point•Stu Forster/Getty Images

Zak Crawley made the most of his chance – when it finally came – scoring a half-century on the final afternoon of a second Test severely affected by bad weather throughout. With only 91.2 overs bowled up to the final resumption and the draw a fait accompli, the evening session was consigned to batting and bowling practice. But it was by no means wasted on the players or the viewing public who had been starved of action for frustrating stretches of the match in Southampton. The opportunity was not lost on Crawley, who came into the side for Ben Stokes and returned to the ground where he made a career-high 76 in the first installment of England’s series against West Indies in early July.Crawley’s frustration that he couldn’t go on further after reaching his third Test fifty was palpable when he swung his bat furiously through the air while trudging off, having fallen lbw to Mohammad Abbas for 53. Up to that point Crawley, who is just 22 years old and seven Tests into his career, had acquitted himself well.Play recommenced at 3.20pm local time for the first time since all but the first hour of the fourth day was lost to rain and after a severe thunderstorm lashed the Ageas Bowl in the early hours of the fifth day, requiring lengthy mopping up and drying efforts. It was a cruel irony that when play resumed it was in blazing sunshine and it stayed that way until stumps, when England declared their first innings on 110 for 4 and the sides shook hands on a draw shortly after 6pm. That ended a run of six consecutive Test wins in charge for Joe Root, but ensured England go into the third and final Test starting at the same venue on Friday with a 1-0 series lead. The sun also changed the complexion of the match, albeit too late to have any effect on the result. The movement and bounce that had so troubled England on the fourth morning, when they lost opener Rory Burns for a four-ball duck, were far more tame on the final afternoon and Crawley and Dom Sibley bedded in for a 91-run second-wicket stand.Abbas, largely unplayable during his opening spell on the fourth day, dropped a couple short in his second over and was duly punished by Crawley, who pulled nonchalantly to the boundary at backward square leg and crunched another through cover point.Crawley ended up with seven fours, including one through cow corner off a Yasir Shah long hop to bring up his half-century.Crawley had been keen to face Yasir, having travelled to India a couple of years ago to develop his batting against spin. But Yasir would have had him stumped in his third over had it not been for a fumble by wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan, who has been otherwise tidy behind the stumps. Crawley skipped down the wicket to Yasir, effectivley yorking himself, but Rizwan failed to grab the ball as it skidded through. It was Abbas, who ultimately did for Crawley, starting a new spell and immediately pinning him back with a length ball on middle stump which moved away off the seam, beating the bat and striking the back pad. Crawley reviewed, probably in the hope that it had hit him too high, but he was confirmed out on umpire’s call and sent on his way.Sibley, too, played well for his 32 but, slightly worryingly for him, he was caught behind down the leg side in Abbas’ next over, a style of dismissal which has become familiar.Yasir was amongst the wickets when he had Ollie Pope out cheaply lbw, and Root pulled the pin after one ball from his counterpart Azhar Ali, as the teams reached the final hour and shook hands on a draw.Rizwan was named Player of the Match after top-scoring in Pakistan’s innings with 72.While the match ended brightly enough in terms of play resuming in glorious conditions and Crawley taking another step in his development, the positives were overshadowed by debate over the lack of action due to the weather and questions over how the game can evolve to avoid such frustration.
