All-format tour scheduled for January 2021, pending successful health checks

Cricket West Indies (CWI) board director Dr Akshai Mansingh and Paul Slowe, the board’s security manager, will visit Dhaka and Chattogram next week to inspect the BCB’s bio-security plans and health protocols in the country. The news comes following CWI president Ricky Skerritt’s statement that West Indies are keen to tour Bangladesh as scheduled, in January next year.West Indies are supposed to play three Tests, three ODIs and two T20Is on the tour, but it is likely that the Test series – part of the ICC’s World Test Championship (WTC) – will be reduced to two matches.”We would be the first international team to visit Bangladesh since the onset of the pandemic,” CWI CEO Johnny Grave said. “Acting always with the health and safety of our touring party at the forefront of our minds, we have decided to conduct a pre-tour recce by sending two highly experienced professionals to assess the BCB’s bio-secure plans and protocols.”Our respective medical and operations teams have held a number of positive meetings over the last few weeks and following receipt of the report from our inspection team, a recommendation will be made to our board of directors on whether it is safe to tour Bangladesh early next year.”ALSO READ: CWI willing to send ‘best available’ team to Bangladesh in 2021In an interview to a Bangladeshi TV channel earlier this week, Skerritt said that CWI want to ensure that the BCB followed the recognised worldwide health protocols – that the West Indies team had experienced in England – after they became the first international cricket team to tour during the pandemic.”We want to be sure that the protocols established in Bangladesh meet the requirement that we have established so far in the various tours we have been on,” Skerritt said. “There are case studies to benchmark from. One of the most enticing discussions in English football is which club, including Newcastle United, have the best academy. Newcastle have produced some impressive players in recent years, most recently young Lewis Miley who broke into the Magpies' starting eleven last season and has since become a prominent feature in their team.

Manchester United and Arsenal are two of the favourites to take this particular crown. The Red Devils have produced some legendary players over the years, from the Busby Babes to the Class of ‘92. Nowadays, the likes of Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo are representing Carrington at the moment.

For Arsenal, their famous Hale End academy is represented by the likes of Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe., with the likes of Reiss Nelson also involved in the Gunners squad last season.

Chelsea are another side who have a prominent academy in England. Cobham has produced some iconic players too, and they had several academy graduates in their Champions League-winning side of 2021, including Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount.

Now, with the transfer window here, one of those players in that famous Chelsea side has been linked with Newcastle in recent days, and they could look to bring him in to strengthen their side ahead of next season.

Newcastle target Serie A defender

The Cobham academy graduate in question here is Fikayo Tomori, who is now playing at Italian giants AC Milan. The England international left Chelsea in 2021 for Milan, but could now make a return to the Premier League by joining Newcastle.

According to a report from The Guardian, 'contact has been made with Milan' for a potential deal to bring Tomori to St James’ Park this summer, but it is not yet clear if a deal will be struck between the two sides.

The report stats that Milan are looking for a fee of more than £40m to consider selling the English centre-back. They explain that, at this stage, it is 'unclear whether a compromise can be reached', although interest from Newcastle is certainly there.

That £40m figure would be one Milan are no doubt keen to hit to ensure they make a profit on any potential deal for Tomori. They paid Chelsea £25m to acquire his services three years ago, after a loan spell, meaning that they would make a healthy profit on the player if they make £40m or more on him.

How Tomori would fit in at Newcastle

Despite missing a fair chunk of the season due to a hamstring injury, Tomori featured 26 times in Serie A for Milan last season, chipping in with four goals. He helped to keep an impressive seven clean sheets out of Milan’s 13 in that time, too, as per Sofascore.

Football journalist Matteo Bonetti described Tomori as “masterful” in December 2023, praising him for the way he was seen “commanding the back line” for the Rossoneri, and this is certainly reflected in his stats.

One thing that stands out about Tomori’s game is his ball-carrying ability. The 26-year-old was statistically one of the best ball-carrying defenders in Serie A last season as per FBref, averaging 1.50 progressive carries per 90 minutes, which ranked him in the top 16%. The defender also averaged 3.00 final third carries, elite numbers which place him in the top 1% of Serie A defenders.

Not only that, the Canadian-born defender is very imposing in the air, standing at 6 foot. On average last season, Tomori won three aerial duels per 90 minutes, which gave him an average win rate of 75%.

Tomori could pair well with one of Eddie Howe’s first-choice defenders, Sven Botman. The Dutchman has been out injured with an anterior cruciate ligament injury twice, and will not return until October 2024. However, the 24-year-old could strike a good partnership with Tomori when he is fit from his injury.

Firstly, the pair would complement each other well given Botman is left-footed and Tomori right-footed. On the ball, as per Sofascore, the Dutchman is very composed, and averages a 91% pass accuracy per game, completing 54.1 passes. Having two defenders who are very composed on the ball, with different strengths, would really enhance the quality of Newcastle’s back four.

He is also a great recovery defender, with his large stride helping him to cover ground quickly. Botman averages 4.1 ball recoveries per game, as well as averaging 3.1 clearances. He also excels in the air winning two aerial duels each game on average last season.

There is little doubt that Tomori would be a good addition to the squad at St James’ Park. In the modern market, £40m is not too unreasonable, and he would bring great quality to Newcastle’s defence.

Previous reports suggested that the Bologna forward has a £34m release clause, but it now seems as though United are ready to go above that in pursuit of solving their goalscoring problems, including things like agent fees "without any problem". As the likes of Marcus Rashford look to rediscover their best form next season, the arrival of Zirkzee would undoubtedly go a long way.

As much as Manchester United's attack struggled last season, Rasmus Hojlund showed enough glimpses of his best form to suggest that the future is bright for the Dane at Old Trafford. And now, Zirkzee could form quite the strike partnership with the young United forward in a duo that could lead Ten Hag's attacking force for years to come.

Forest's summer could yet get even better too. According to Jornal de Noticias, Nottingham Forest have reignited their interest in Florentino Luis and Benfica are now open to selling the midfielder in a deal worth €30m (£25m) this summer. The Midlands club aren't alone in their interest, however, with both Everton and Leicester City also reportedly eyeing moves to sign the 24-year-old.

Those at the City Ground reportedly saw a bid rejected for Luis back in 2023, but should be better placed to launch a move this summer due to Benfica's desire to raise funds through sales this summer. A player who is entering the prime years of his career, Luis could finally make his way to the City Ground.

"Superb" Luis could partner Danilo

Nuno turned to a variety of systems at Forest last season, alternating between a back five and a back four, but the arrival of another defensive midfielder in Luis should help the former Wolverhampton Wanderers boss settle on one consistent approach. The Benfica man, for just £25m, could form an ideal partnership with Danilo at the base of Forest's midfield and, in-turn, unlock the likes of Anderson and Morgan Gibbs-White even further.

What could be key is the balance that Luis and Danilo should offer each other if the former completes a move this summer, with his ability to progress the ball through his passing range matched with the current Forest midfielder's ability to do so by driving with the ball.

Whilst things haven't followed the plan that many would have had in mind at Benfica, Luis is still a player with plenty of potential and plenty to offer. Previously described as "superb" by Football Talent Scout's Jacek Kulig, Forest would be completing yet another solid piece of business.

Shahid Afridi has been allowed to end his quarantine early and is now cleared to play Galle Gladiators’ opening Lanka Premier League (LPL) match against Jaffna Stallions on Friday.Gladiators had initially believed Afridi would not be available for the franchise’s first two matches, because he only arrived in Sri Lanka Tuesday, following a missed flight the day before. But having had Covid-19 in June, Afridi took an antibody test soon after arrival. On Friday, the results from this test confirmed that Afridi had antibodies to the virus, and as such, is not at risk of spreading Covid-19.Tournament director Ravin Wickramaratne confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that Afridi had been cleared by the LPL’s medical staff following receipt of the results of the antibody test. Afridi had nevertheless completed three days of isolated quarantine while he awaited the result, but will now no longer be required to undergo the four further days of the less restrictive quarantine.Afridi will now most likely captain the Gladiators through the course of the tournament, meaning Bhanuka Rajapaksa, who was poised to lead in Afridi’s stead, will go back to being vice-captain. Afridi has not had a training session in Sri Lanka yet, but had played two PSL playoff matches in mid-November.
