Free transfer: West Ham also best positioned to sign new 22-honour player

West Ham are in a strong position to sign a free agent with 22 trophies to his name throughout his career, according to an exciting new transfer claim.

West Ham transfer news

Julen Lopetegui is looking to make his mark immediately at the London Stadium, with the Spaniard replacing David Moyes as manager at the end of last season. He and technical director Tim Steidten have already made three signings, including snapping up Max Kilman from Wolves in a big-money deal, and plenty of other business is also being mooted.

One recent update has claimed that West Ham have made a bid for Nottingham Forest defender Neco Williams this summer, but they have been rebuffed by their Premier League rivals. Meanwhile, a verbal agreement is reportedly in place with Aston Villa attacker Jhon Duran, as Lopetegui looks to add firepower to his squad. A deal was also in place for Bayern Munich's Noussair Mazraoui, however, that is now off with an agreement unable to be reached on the agent's side.

Jhon Duran scores for Aston Villa

Arkadiusz Milik has been linked with a summer switch to the Hammers, too, with the 30-year-old currently playing for Serie A giants Juventus. In fact, West Ham are said to have made contact with him, with the Pole seen as an alternative option to Duran, should he fail to seal a move to east London.

Speaking of strikers, one exciting report has suggested that Lopetegui's men are leading the race to sign Brentford star Ivan Toney, which could be a statement signing. Tottenham are also providing competition for his signature, and Manchester United have emerged as potential suitors, too.

West Ham well-placed to sign 22-trophy ace

According to Tot Costa on X, West Ham, and by extension Steidten, are one of three clubs best-positioned to sign former Barcelona utility man Sergi Roberto this summer, with the Spaniard available on a free transfer after leaving the Camp Nou:

"Sergi Roberto, practically out of Barça Deco has personally called the player to maintain the proposal, but does not offer him any guarantee that he will be able to be registered. Aston Villa, West Ham and Ajax, the best positioned to sign the player."

There is no denying Roberto's calibre as a footballer, considering he has won 22 trophies in his career, including seven La Liga titles and two Champions League crowns.

While never arguably a star player for Barca, his versatility has always made him a hugely effective squad player, and he famously scored the last-gasp goal that defeated Paris Saint-Germain in an epic comeback in 2017. That led to none other than Lionel Messi heaping praise on him at the time, saying: "You have become one of the best full-backs in the world. The moment you made us live was amazing, because of how it came to be, it was impressive."

Report: West Ham now reach verbal £35m agreement to sign "special" player

He appears keen on making the move to the London Stadium.

ByBen Browning Jul 25, 2024

Signing Roberto could feel like a shrewd piece of business by West Ham, showing the pull that Lopetegui has as a manager, and it would further suggest that the Hammers really are going places this season, as they look to reach another level than they were at under Moyes.

Jason Holder, Kieron Pollard, Shimron Hetmyer among ten West Indies players to pull out of Bangladesh tour

Fabian Allen and Shane Dowrich were unavailable because of personal reasons

Deivarayan Muthu29-Dec-2020West Indies Test captain Jason Holder, limited-overs captain Kieron Pollard, and Test vice-captain Roston Chase are among ten players who have pulled out of the upcoming tour of Bangladesh amid Covid-19 concerns. Darren Bravo, Shamarh Brooks, Sheldon Cottrell, Evin Lewis, Shai Hope, Shimron Hetmyer and Nicholas Pooran are the other players who “declined the opportunity to tour due to Covid-19 related concerns or personal fears,” according to a CWI release.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Allrounder Fabian Allen and wicketkeeper-batsman Shane Dowrich were unavailable because of personal reasons. In the absence of Holder, opening batsman Kraigg Brathwaite will lead the Test side; he had also captained the Test team when they last toured Bangladesh in 2018. The ODI squad will be led by Jason Mohammed, who last played for West Indies in 2018.According to the CWI Covid-19 policy, any player can opt out of an overseas tour over fears of safety, and the decision will not impact their future selections. Bravo and Hetmyer had also turned down call-ups for the England tour earlier this year because of concerns about their families.Hodge, Moseley, Mayers get maiden Test call-ups
In the absence of a number of first-choice players, the uncapped pair of Kavem Hodge and Shayne Moseley were included in the Test squad. Moseley, 26, has been on the fringes of Test selection, having toured the UK and then New Zealand as a reserve batsman. In his most recent match for West Indies A in Nelson earlier this month, Moseley scored 110 and 54 against a New Zealand A attack that contained internationals like Doug Bracewell, Jimmy Neesham and Scott Kuggeleijn.Moseley’s Barbados team-mate Kyle Mayers, who made his T20I debut in New Zealand, also earned his maiden Test call-up. Mayers was the second-highest run-getter in the 2019-20 West Indies first-class competition, scoring 654 runs in 15 innings at an average of 50.30.Hodge is the third left-arm fingerspin-bowling option in the squad behind Jomel Warrican and Veerasammy Permaul. Rahkeem Cornwall will provide another option with his offbreaks.”He has been around for a few years and has made a case for himself and he now gets his chance,” chief selector Roger Harper said of Hodge. “The fact that he also bowls left-arm spin has certainly helped his cause. We also have Kyle Mayers and Shayne Moseley, who have both toured with the team to England and New Zealand as reserves, being selected in the Test squad for the first time.”Senior fast bowler Kemar Roach, who missed the Wellington Test and returned home following the death of his father, was back to lead the red-ball attack along with Shannon Gabriel, who recently featured in his 50th Test. The other Holder – Chemar – was missing from the Test squad after having impressed for West Indies A as well as the senior Test team in New Zealand. Chemar, though, was named in the ODI squad.Nkrumah Bonner, Joshua da Silva, Alzarri Joseph and Mayers were the players who were picked in both the Test and ODI squads.Ottley, Hosein picked in ODI squad
Batsman Kjorn Ottley and left-arm fingerspinner Akeal Hosein were among the new faces in the ODI squad. Ottley hit 325 runs in nine innings at an average of 54.16 and strike rate of 80.64 for Barbados in the 2019-20 domestic 50-over competition. In all, the 31-year old has 1175 runs in 45 List A matches at an average of 30.12.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

“The absence of several more experienced players has certainly provided an opportunity for the left-handed Kjorn Ottley who has had a good Super50 tournament last year,” Harper said. “He will be very keen to make his mark. Tours of Bangladesh are never easy as they always play well in their own conditions. Although a number of the senior players are missing in both formats, I expect our teams to be very competitive. I expect our players to play with purpose, with passion and with the desire to prove that they belong at this level.”As for Hosein, he played a vital role for the Trinbago Knight Riders in their unbeaten run to the CPL 2020 title. When Sunil Narine was unavailable (because of kidney stones), Hosein stepped up and bowled the tough overs in the powerplay. He took a career-best 3 for 14 in the semi-final against the Jamaica Tallawahs and followed it with 1 for 26 in the final against the St Lucia Zouks. Hosein will be complemented by legspinner Hayden Walsh Jr.This series will be West Indies’ first assignment in the ODI Super League, and this will be their third tour since the pandemic hit, after visiting England and New Zealand. The West Indies touring party is scheduled to arrive in Bangladesh on January 10 and, after completing quarantine protocols, they will kickstart their preparations with a one-day warm-up match in Savar. The three-match ODI series will begin in Dhaka on January 20, with the Test leg starting on February 3.Test squad: Kraigg Brathwaite (capt), Jermaine Blackwood, Nkrumah Bonner, John Campbell, Rahkeem Cornwall, Joshua Da Silva, Shannon Gabriel, Kavem Hodge, Alzarri Joseph, Kyle Mayers, Shayne Moseley, Veerasammy Permaul, Kemar Roach, Raymon Reifer, Jomel WarricanODI squad: Jason Mohammed (capt), Sunil Ambris, Nkrumah Bonner, Joshua Da Silva, Jahmar Hamilton, Chemar Holder, Akeal Hosein, Alzarri Joseph, Kyle Mayers, Andre McCarthy, Kjorn Ottley, Rovman Powell, Raymon Reifer, Romario Shepherd, Hayden Walsh Jr.

BCCI looking to get players vaccinated, UAE not a back-up option for IPL

BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal says board confident of hosting IPL 2021 in India

PTI30-Jan-2021

IPL 2020 was held in the UAE due to pandemic realities in India•BCCI

The BCCI doesn’t feel the need to look at a back-up overseas venue for hosting the 2021 edition of the IPL, treasurer Arun Singh Dhumal said on Saturday. Dhumal, who is also on the IPL Governing Council, told PTI that the board is confident that it would be able to host the league at home unlike the previous edition, which was held in the UAE due to the Covid-19 pandemic.”We are working on having the IPL in India and we are hopeful that we would be able to organise it. We are not even thinking of a back up at this point in time, we want to do it here. India is probably safer than UAE at this point. Hopefully, the situation remains stable and keep improving and we will have it here,” said Dhumal. The UAE is currently experiencing a spike in Covid-19 cases while there has been a decline in India. The seven-day average caseload in the UAE has inched towards 4000, up from 770 when the IPL 2020 began on September 19. India’s seven-day average was past 90,000 at the time, but is now under 14,000.Related

No Ranji Trophy in 2020-21, but BCCI to hold domestic 50-over games for men, women, and U-19 boys

No crowds for India-England Tests in Chennai

After the boards of both countries signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during last year’s IPL, the UAE was considered a back-up option to host this season too, alongside being an option for the India-England series that begins in Chennai next week. The BCCI recently scrapped the Ranji Trophy from this season’s cricket for the first time in the tournament’s history, deciding instead to close the truncated season off with the Vijay Hazare Trophy, and 50-overs competitions for women and U-19 cricketers.”We took feedback from the players, selection committee, state associations. It was felt that 2020 is already gone and rather than having two Ranji events in the same calendar year, it is better to go for white-ball cricket. That way, we could have something for junior cricket and women considering the importance of of Women’s World Cup and U-19 World Cup next year. Rather than having one tournament, we thought of having events in different categories,” said Dhumal, adding that players will be duly compensated for not getting to play the Ranji Trophy this season. The resumption of domestic cricket happened with the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, with the final to be played in Ahmedabad on Sunday. With domestic cricket also being played in bio-secure bubbles, Dhumal said it is tough on the organisers as well as players, but that’s the requirement until the cricketers are vaccinated.”It is tough but at least this way we are getting to play. We are working on getting our players vaccinated. The government’s directive is that frontline workers and the most vulnerable will be the first to get vaccinated, but we are in touch with the government to get our players vaccinated.”On the possibility of having crowds for the upcoming India-England contest, the first international series in the country amid the pandemic, he said: “We are reviewing the situation on a regular basis. We want the roar to be back in the stadiums but we have to work in tandem with the state and cental government. We are very keen to have the crowds back. Surely, it won’t be 100 percent capacity given the challenges, but we are looking at anywhere between 25-50 percent.”However, the first two Tests of the England series will be played behind closed doors. The BCCI had approached its counterparts in Sri Lanka and South Africa for a bilateral series next month to resume international cricket for the women’s team but Dhumal claimed the pandemic situations in those countries were not viable. The women last played an international event in March 2020.”We are keen that women’s cricket flourishes. We were wanting to conduct some bilateral series but it fizzled out because the Covid situation is not safe in those countries. At the first available opportunity, we will conduct it.”

£90k-p/w Man Utd player says "yes" to new club with massive loss incoming

Another Manchester United man has said yes to a move away from Old Trafford this summer, it has emerged, in a move that could have major implications for the remainder of the transfer window.

United getting business done but departures slow

Erik ten Hag's side have made two signings this summer, in the shape of defender Leny Yoro and striker Joshua Zirkzee, with both expected to play important roles in the squad in the upcoming 2024-25 season.

Costing a combined £86m, they replace free agent exits Raphael Varane and Anthony Martial, and should offer the Red Devils increased squad depth should they be able to stay fit.

There is also a desire to add at least one midfielder this summer, with Manuel Ugarte among those the club are keen on, while they have also reportedly tabled an offer for Real Sociedad midfielder and EURO 2024 winner Martin Zubimendi.

Man Utd ready to sell £150k-p/w man for £4m this summer, INEOS want him out

His departure would free up space on the wage bill at Old Trafford.

ByBen Browning Jul 29, 2024

But departures have been slow despite the revelation at the end of last season that almost every player at the club was up for sale. Only Rasmus Hojlund, Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho were considered untouchable, with everyone else able to leave at the right price.

Those prices haven't come though; Casemiro was linked with a move to Saudi Arabia earlier in the summer but no concrete offer has been forthcoming, while Fulham are thought to be plotting another offer for Scott McTominay after their first was turned down.

That hasn't stopped players agreeing personal terms to depart though, and one report claims that is exactly what Jadon Sancho has done with French Champions PSG. He is not the only one either.

Man Utd defender says "yes" to West Ham

Now, it has been claimed that Aaron Wan-Bissaka has given the green light to complete a move to West Ham this summer, after rejected a move to the London Stadium earlier in the summer.

The full-back was signed for £50m from Crystal Palace, but is heading into the final 12 months of his £90,000 a week deal at Old Trafford and always looked more likely to leave before the August 30th transfer deadline than adding to his 190 appearances for the club.

Now, Football Insider report that a deal to join West Ham is close, with the defender having said "yes" to a move to the London Stadium and calling to a close his time at Old Trafford.

They add that the Hammers are "in advanced talks" over a move worth between £15m and £20m, a deal that will see the Red Devils take a hefty loss on their initial outlay.

The development will come as good news for the Red Devils, whose move for fellow fullback Noussair Mazraoui from Bayern Munich hinges on Wan-Bissaka's exit. The Moroccan has agreed a deal to move to Old Trafford, where he will reunite with Ten Hag after the two worked together at Ajax.

He will become West Ham's fourth signing of the summer if all goes to plan, following Max Kilman's arrival plus the signings of Wes Foderingham and talented teen Luis Guilherme.

Sam Curran: 'I came back from the IPL a much better player'

‘Refreshed’ allrounder looking to use CSK experience in England’s T20I series in India

Alan Gardner08-Mar-2021Sam Curran has described himself as “refreshed and raring to go” after rejoining England’s tour of India for the white-ball leg following a pre-arranged period of rest. Amid continued talk about player rotation, Curran backed the ECB’s policy as a way of combating potential burnout due to the effects of prolonged time in biosecure bubbles – though admitted he had not given much thought to the possibility of sitting out the Ashes in Australia next winter.Curran is one of several multi-format England players who have been given time off since January, flying home after playing two Tests in Sri Lanka. He had initially been due to return in time to be considered for the fourth Test against India, but encountered difficulties in making the journey alone due to considerations around social distancing and Covid-19.Instead, he arrived with the rest of the white-ball squad on February 26, to complete a period in quarantine ahead of five T20Is in Ahmedabad, starting on Friday. Curran has a Test central contract with the ECB, but is pushing for a more regular starting role in the T20I side ahead of the World Cup later this year.”There’s been a lot of stuff spoken about rotation,” he said. “I think as a player, I’ve found it beneficial. The bubbles are tough from a player’s perspective, being away for long periods. Coming back after my break, I do really refreshed and raring to go for this white-ball series. I think it is going to be a great series. Various players have had breaks so I’m sure guys might say similar things. Everyone reacts to the bubbles in very different ways so that’s why I think the ECB have been good to us as players to allow us to get out and come back. It’s about keeping us mentally and physically fresh. I certainly appreciate the break I was given.”Related

England may extend rest and rotation policy into Ashes

England’s stated approach of rest and rotation has generated much debate at the start of a year that will feature 17 Test matches and a T20 World Cup, as well as the usual quota of bilateral white-ball series. That players such as Curran, Moeen Ali, Jos Buttler and Jonny Bairstow were allowed to miss Tests against India, despite being set to play a full IPL season from next month, drew criticism in some quarters. With the World Cup to be staged in India later this year, there is a clear rationale for giving Eoin Morgan a full-strength T20I squad to choose from, though Curran conceded it was a difficult balancing act for the selectors.”It’s a really strong side. [But] with so much cricket and all these bubbles, England have made it very clear they don’t want to burn out their players, they want to keep us fresh, mentally prepared and stop that burnout. It’s a World Cup year so it’s obviously going to be a priority, but then again the Ashes are straight after that. I think any team that plays is going to try to go out there and win, with places up for grabs, so it’s a really exciting time.”Curran has been one of a number of England player to seize their chance at the IPL in recent years, since the softening of the ECB’s stance towards the competition. His all-round contributions – which included briefly moving up to open the batting during a difficult campaign for Chennai Super Kings – won praise from MS Dhoni and Curran was positive about the effect the tournament has had on his game.Sam Curran is back in India ahead of the T20I series•Surjeet Yadav/Getty

“I definitely felt I came back a much better player from the IPL last year in [the UAE],” he said. “I did various roles and got challenged in different ways, which I really enjoyed. I think it’s benefitted my game. It’s a fantastic tournament, us players love playing in it, great crowds, India’s an amazing place to play cricket and it’s the best T20 competition around so it’s great to playing in it, especially with that T20 World Cup in India. It’s going to be great preparation and great for us to keep developing in these conditions. I’m really looking forward to it.”Despite the difficulties with managing workloads and a schedule ruled by Covid bubbles of one form or another, Curran said that his goal remained “to play all three formats for England”. He was hopeful that increased take-up of vaccines would allow for fewer restrictions in the months ahead, and reluctant to consider the option of being rested during the 2021-22 Ashes – despite Chris Silverwood saying that England may have to consider flying players home from Australia.”I think it’s a very long time away and every players’ dream is to play in the Ashes,” Curran said. “Who knows where the world’s going to be whenever the Ashes are at the end of this year? I think England have made it very clear they’re trying to take it a series at a time and speak with players, speak with coaching staff and see how they are. I haven’t looked that far ahead but the pinnacle, I guess, is playing in an Ashes series Down Under… most of us players would dream of being on that plane.”
