Tom Lace makes Hampshire earn their place as Gloucestershire fall at the last

Hard-fought seven-wicket win allows visitors to leapfrog into September’s top flight

Hampshire 486 for 7 dec (Gubbins 137*, Weatherley 78, Holland 74) and 56 for 3 beat Gloucestershire 229 (Phillips 47, de Grandhomme 4-31) and 310 (Lace 118*) by seven wickets Hampshire qualified for Division One of the LV= Insurance Championship with a seven-wicket win over Gloucestershire on the final day at Cheltenham. They were made to work hard as Tom Lace’s 118 led 126-overs of second-innings resistance but Gloucestershire were eventually bowled out for 310 and the target of only 54 was dealt with after tea.It ended Gloucestershire’s dreams of a maiden Championship title as they missed out on a top two finish in Group Two despite winning five matches – only Yorkshire won as many. But three heavy defeats from their final four games – taking a total of just six points from those losses – have cost them. They were well behind here after a weak first innings but, in a repeat of the return fixture back in May, made a good fist of trying to bat through the final day to save the game, with the draw good enough to stay above Hampshire.Hopes rose of another great escape as Lace made his first century for Gloucestershire but he became just the fifth first-class victim of Joe Weatherley’s career and no-one else could match his longevity. The day began, like day two, with an immediate reward for Hampshire as Glenn Phillips was trapped lbw by Colin de Grandhomme fifth ball of the day. Phillips thought he’d hit it. Replays were inconclusive.Ryan Higgins and Jack Taylor formed useful stands with Lace but Higgins drove loosely at Keith Barker and edged to slip three overs before lunch and Taylor played around Kyle Abbott and lost his off stump.Lace remained. He pulled de Grandhomme to reach a 114-ball fifty before Barker was flicked through square leg and then steered to third man to raise a century in 214 balls with 12 fours and two sixes – a pair of top-edged pulls off Abbott and Wheal. But his fine effort ended in agonising fashion as he shouldered arms to Weatherley’s very part-time off-spin and was plumb lbw. He and the rest of the county hung their heads.Ollie and Tom Price hung around for 22 overs before another groaning dismissal as Ollie pulled a Mason Crane long-hop into short leg’s back and the rebound popped up for leg slip. Matt Taylor was then lbw to Wheal shouldering arms before Dan Worrall drove to point.

Jemimah Rodrigues, Laura Kimmince power Superchargers to emphatic 27-run win

Rockets fall short as Sciver, Brunt can’t find support to chase tough target

Northern Superchargers 149 for 7 (Rodrigues 60, Johnson 4-15) beat Trent Rockets 122 for 7 (Brunt 43*) by 27 runs Jemimah Rodrigues produced her second fifty in as many matches of the women’s Hundred, and Laura Kimmince pitched in with a riotous knock of 31 from 13 balls, as Northern Superchargers made it two wins from two at the expense of their hosts, Trent Rockets, who have now lost both of their opening home fixtures. After winning the toss, Superchargers broke with convention for the tournament to date by choosing to bat first – a reflection on an atypically slow Trent Bridge surface that was always likely to prove tricky for run-scoring in the second innings. That duly proved to be the case, with only Nat Sciver showing any real fluency in her 33 from 23.Katherine Brunt kept swinging to the end to top-score for Trent Rockets with 43 not out from 36, but she had been cutting a frustrated figure long before the chase petered out. Her crashing pull through square leg off Alice Davidson-Richards’ 90th delivery would prove to be the last boundary of the Rockets innings, and the first since Sarah Glenn had launched their second and last six from the 70th ball.At 98 for 4 with 30 balls remaining, Brunt and Glenn, two England allrounders, represented the last real hope of a fightback. But Superchargers’ strategic timeout resulted in a return to the frontline for the legspinner Katie Levick. She duly ripped a beauty past a floundering Glenn to have her stumped for 11 from 8, and with Linsey Smith serving up an outstanding spell of 1 for 12 from her 20 balls, pace off proved decisive as the innings fell away.Rodrigues’ costly reprieve
Rodrigues produced the innings of the Hundred so far on Saturday, when she powered Superchargers to victory with 92 not out from 43 balls against Welsh Fire at Headingley. Today, she could have been pinned by her first ball of the day, a leg-stump pad-thwacker from Brunt that straightened enough to overturn the on-field not-out, but Trent Rockets chose not to review. It was a predictably costly lapse. Not for the first time, Rodrigues was a sedate figure in the Powerplay, as Lauren Winfield-Hill dominated an opening stand of 64, but having nudged along to 16 from her first 21 balls, her change of tempo was startling to behold – 44 from her next 19, as Kimmince joined the run-fest in a gleefully unfettered cameo. At 76 for 2 with 35 balls remaining, Rodrigues signalled the Super-charge in predictable fashion, as a pumped-up Brunt – just six runs against her name from her first ten back-to-back deliveries – was thumped straight back over her head for four, the prelude to a devastating run of 13 fours in 20 balls.Lauren Winfield-Hill enjoyed the dismissal of Rachel Priest•Getty Images

Kimmince-meat
Kimmince took the cue, dinking a pair of slower balls to the boundary to further sour Brunt’s mood, and when Rodrigues unleashed on Heather Graham with two scintillating bottom-handed drives through the covers, the die was truly cast.Sciver took Rockets’ timeout after leaking 13 runs from her third set of five – three more fours to a now-ticking Rodrigues – but that pause for thought did not have the desired effect. Sarah Glenn was her go-to option, but Kimmince was poised to strike, and did so with devastating force. Five fours out of five flew forth, each to a different corner of the ground as Superchargers shelved the subtlety and went for broke.Johnson finds a response
As a late replacement for the likes of Elyse Villani and Sophie Molineux, Sammy-Jo Johnson is one of the less heralded Aussies in the Hundred – but she is also one of the sport’s natural-born winners, with back-to-back WBBL titles for Brisbane Heat in 2018 and 2019 immediately followed by a third for Sydney Thunder when she switched teams for the 2020-21 event. And her never-say-die approach dug her side out of a sizeable hole with the remarkable figures of 4 for 15 in 20 balls. Her first ten went wicketless, though she did miss a tough return chance off Winfield-Hill, but after making amends with a sharp grab off Laura Wolvaardt, she applied the emergency brake in her final set of five, with three wickets for one run including two from her last two balls.Kimmince was the first of those – blood pumping after her boundaries, she played all over a slower ball to depart for 31 from 13 – and Rodrigues followed moments later, another slower ball, this time a solid connection but only as far as Brunt on the long-on rope. Hollie Armitage fell one ball later, hacking to short third for a duck, and though Bess Heath and Smith found the boundary thereafter, Superchargers’ eventual total of 149 for 7 – the highest of the women’s competition to date – felt some 15-20 short of what had briefly seemed possible. In the end, it mattered not.

Maresca must instantly drop 5/10 Chelsea man who lost all 6 of his duels

It’s another emphatic win in the bag for Enzo Maresca, who enjoying a terrific start to life as Chelsea’s new head coach. Todd Boehly has operated like a puppet master with frayed strings over these past few years, but maybe – just maybe – it’s all coming together.

Blue is the colour at the moment. Barrow were dispatched 5-0 in the Carabao Cup third round to move Chelsea into the last 16, and though the League Two opposition were not expected to cause an upset, there was an elegance about the west Londoners’ performance.

Pedro Neto scores for Chelsea

Professional and comprehensive, Maresca will be delighted that he was able to make sweeping changes – 11, in fact – and even more so that Christopher Nkunku is continuing to purr.

Chelsea's best player vs Barrow

Eight games, three starts, six goals, 330 minutes and 13 shots taken across all competitions for Nkunku this season. Boy is he coming into his own.

Christopher Nkunku for Chelsea

The 24-year-old forward endured an injury-affected debut campaign with Chelsea but has started the year on strong footing, having now scored in each of the three competitions he has played in.

Barrow are not the toughest opponents that the Blues will face this term, but his expert shooting made a telling comment on the calibre of goalscorer Chelsea have at their disposal, pushing at Nicolas Jackson and the like for the position as the club’s star striker.

Jackson has started the season in fine fettle in the Premier League, and so Nkunku will need to take every shot he’s presented with – he’s doing exactly that.

He’s not the only one who needs to shine when placed into the limelight, but unfortunately, £30m summer signing from Leicester City, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, flattered to deceive.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall failed his audition

Dewsbury-Hall, aged 26, was handed his first domestic start of the season yesterday evening, and he will surely rue the failed attempt to catch the eye.

Above, you’ll see a delineation of Dewsbury-Hall’s performance against Barrow. He’ll have left Maresca wanting. With errant shooting, uninspiring playmaking, non-existent defensive contribution and 29 fewer touches than his younger midfield partner, Cesare Casadei, it was not the best showing.

For a player of his quality, against such inferior opposition, Dewsbury-Hall was always going to have his moments, but they were few and far between and led GOAL to afford him merely a 5/10 match score, criticising his lack of influence and claiming that he ‘struggled to impress’.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall for Chelsea

That’s a pity. Moises Caicedo is really coming into his own at the moment and Enzo Fernandez is one of the highest-profile players at Stamford Bridge, so any opportunity to stake a claim in the centre is important. Romeo Lavia has made a significant impression on the Blues faithful and will expect ample chance to show his quality once back from injury.

Moreover, though, Casadei and Carney Chukwuemeka (the latter off the bench) outplayed the former Fox, who will surely now need to pull his weight in the Conference League if he is to enjoy a campaign with regular minutes in the capital.

Some will question the decision to sell academy graduate Conor Gallagher for, subjectively, a lesser player, but Gallagher’s sale made sense for a range of reasons and Dewsbury-Hall does have what it takes to play an important role in Maresca’s squad, just not quite yet.

Nkunku, for example, is not going to start every game, but he’s pouncing when given the nod, and he will see his fortunes balloon (pardon the pun).

Luke Fletcher plays part with ball and bat to put Nottinghamshire in control

Patterson-White’s maiden Championship hundred sweeps Notts to commanding total before Fletcher’s 4-21

David Hopps31-Aug-2021

Luke Fletcher claimed 4 for 21•Getty Images

Somerset 87 for 7 (Fletcher 4-21) trail Nottinghamshire 448 (Patterson-White 101, Clarke 59, Fletcher 51) by 361 runsLuke Fletcher has rarely been a cricketer to be bathed in the spotlight, but it was a bit much all the same that the very moment he reached 50 Championship wickets for the first time in his career – and galvanised Nottinghamshire’s Championship challenge in the process – the Taunton floodlights turned off and plunged the ground into gloom.Macbeth might have done his best work in darkness, but Fletcher is one of the game’s honest toilers and darkness was the last thing he needed as he strained every sinew in search of a second Championship title to round off an excellent personal season. As the umpires decided upon a brief stoppage, while somebody checked out the fuse box, he trudged philosophically across the pitch, the first three wickets to his name, his face – shining red with effort – standing out in the gloom. The floodlights recovered, and the sides returned, enabling Fletcher to pick up a fourth wicket by the close of the second day. Somerset then lost three more as the ball began to swing and finished in peril at 87 for 7, 30.1 overs of batting mayhem which left them still 361 behind. Their 10-point cushion against Notts could now be lost in the first of four Division One matches that will decide the destination of the Championship. Before lunch, Liam Patterson-White had completed an enterprising maiden Championship hundred to sweep Notts to 448. It had been a long slog for the bowlers and as Fletcher tied up his boots, he might have anticipated a blister or two ahead. Instead, another indefatigable display brought him 4 for 21 in 11 overs – including two leg-side strangles to communicate that fortune was also on his side. This was another grand day in Fletcher’s heartening summer. Not only is he the first bowler to reach 50 Championship wickets this season, his victims have come at 12.45 runs each. That is the sort of return that used to be the province of world-class, imported pace bowlers and, if the Conference system might have played a part, it should not be lightly dismissed.Fletcher, at 32, has become a seam bowler of considerable nous. He has learned to respect the game without taking it too seriously. That balance communicates itself to the crowd and, if Championship cricket is to negotiate one of the most challenging periods in its history, when it often seems to be taking itself more seriously than those in control take it, his sort of attitude is a lesson to many.He bagged his first wicket in his opening over – Steve Davies, lbw to one angled in from around the wicket, a touch-and-go decision which fell his way. Somerset negotiated their first 50 with no further alarms but he then barrelled in to take two wickets in one over. Tom Lammonby, who appears to have two gears – first and fifth – never got out of first and poked a catch to the wicketkeeper. Tom Abell mixed sturdy straight drives with uncertainty around his front pad, particularly against Dane Paterson, before he became the first of Fletcher’s leg-side strangles. A second, after the floodlight failure – that of Lewis Goldsworthy – saw him raise his hands in embarrassed apology. He has passed the outside edge enough over the years to be allowed a few.The only bowler with a comparable record is Craig Overton with 37 at 13.40. The Craig Overton called up by England, Somerset supporters would reflect with a mixture of pride and regret. Somerset Championship challenges fall away in September like apples from the trees and, without Overton and the injured Lewis Gregory, they face a considerable task to avoid the same fate.Abell, Somerset’s skipper, was brutally honest in assessing his team. “We have been completely outplayed for two days, having had the better of conditions when bowling yesterday,” he said. “The fact that we are now so far behind suggests we didn’t apply ourselves well enough at all. It was a good pitch for batting on, although there was some swing. When you reply to a total of over 400 you are under the pump and we haven’t shown enough character or backbone to cope with that.”Fletcher is the sort of cricketer that county cricket often misses out on. He grew up in Bulwell, to the north of Nottingham, where football dominates. He memorably told last month how he failed to make the academy cut at Nottinghamshire and turned to Sunday social cricket where his preparations after a couple of heavy nights amounted to “a couple of paracetamols and a double sausage and egg McMuffin”. Phil de Freitas, the former England allrounder, recognised his potential. That first Championship title came in 2010 when he took nine wickets at 56 and was probably the heaviest player on the circuit. His day began not with wickets but with runs – the fifth half-century of his career. Runs had entirely eluded him this season, to the point where he began the match with more wickets (47) than runs (46). But he middled a few in Notts’ Vitality Blast quarter-final defeat against Hampshire and managed to grind Somerset into the dirt here. Five of the seven boundaries in his 51 came in two overs from Abell, whom he found a nice pace. There were delicate guides, consummate square drives and a couple of heaves, as if hauling a sack of coal off a lorry. He was last out, cowing Roelof van der Merwe, who might have bowled a little more.Patterson-White took advantage of some nondescript Somerset bowling to extend his overnight 46 to 101. He played with striking assurance for a No. 8 and, at 22, appears to have the ability to bat a place or two higher in time, which is always useful for a finger-spinner trying to force his way into a side in England. He survived a half-chance, at best, on 50, when he cut Josh Davey high to Abell’s right at second slip and he met every Somerset seamer fluently. He moved from 94 to 99 with a cut boundary against Abell and a sloppy single allowed by Tom Banton, which summed up Somerset’s faltering mood. The eight dot balls he pushed back on 99 represented his only careworn period, released by a scampered single against Jack Leach into the off side and a delighted punch of the air. Leach dismissed him soon afterwards, pinned lbw on the back foot. But it’s Somerset who are on the back foot now.

O’Neil must ditch Wolves’ gem who took fewer touches than Johnstone

Wolverhampton Wanderers will head into the international break rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table after yet another top-flight defeat.

Brentford prevailed over the Old Gold, securing a 5-3 win which piles the pressure on Gary O’Neil, with his position beginning to look precarious after their dismal start to the campaign.

Wolves manager Gary O'Neil

Several of his starting XI were poor throughout the defeat, which could result in them being dropped once the domestic season resumes in a couple of weeks.

One player who failed to have a major impact was Carlos Forbs, who ended up being subbed with just over 20 minutes to go.

Carlos Forbs' game in numbers v Brentford

The summer signing was making his first Premier League start for Wolves, with O’Neil looking for the Ajax loanee to make an impact from the flank.

The Portuguese gem may have made one key pass, delivered an accurate cross and succeeded with his only dribble attempt, but these were the only positive stats during his time on the pitch.

Remarkably, he made fewer completed passes (15) than goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, while even taking fewer touches than the shot-stopper (29 v 58), clearly highlighting how little the winger was involved throughout the match.

Forbs was dribbled past once, lost possession six times and won just one of his three aerial duels in what was a challenging first start for the former Manchester City starlet.

The £15k-per-week gem will have been expected to hit the ground running in order to help the Old Gold secure a much-needed victory, but he failed to demonstrate his true abilities. Forbs could well be dropped for the next match. The question is, who will take his place in the starting XI?

O'Neil must replace Carlos Forbs

Against Brentford, Goncalo Guedes was the replacement for the ineffective winger, and he could be the ideal player to stake a claim for the berth out wide.

Goncalo Guedes

Indeed, the former Valencia star has already scored three goals this season, but he has failed to start under O’Neil in the top flight.

During his 22-minute cameo on the field, Guedes managed to attempt a dribble, make two key passes, deliver a solitary accurate cross and even had a shot at goal, although it was off target.

It was clearly an improvement on the player he had replaced in the side, which could potentially impact O’Neil’s next starting XI – that is, if he is still in a job by the time the Molineux side play Manchester City in a few weeks.

The team has no problems going forward and scoring, as defending is proving to be the most difficult aspect for them this term, having already conceded 21 in the league, which is the worst record out of all 20 teams.

And with the form City are in, the wait for their first win could stretch that little bit longer.
