Marizanne Kapp's impact with bat and ball helps seal Perth Scorchers' maiden WBBL title

The home side finished strongly with the bat and started superbly with the ball in the powerplay

Marizanne Kapp, who had been ill all week in the lead-up to the WBBL final and barely left her hotel room, produced a critical all-round display to help Perth Scorchers claim their maiden title as Adelaide Strikers’ powerful late-tournament surge came to a halt at Optus Stadium. In front of a crowd of 15,511, the highest for a standalone WBBL match, the defining passages of the match were how Scorchers finished their batting innings and then started with the ball: their final five overs brought 47 runs, with vital hands from Player of the Match Kapp and Alana King, then they restricted Strikers to 2 for 16 in their powerplay with Kapp’s first two overs costing just two runs and Sophie Devine producing a wicket maiden. The middle order did their best to keep Strikers in the match with useful hands but it proved out of reach despite Madeline Penna’s best efforts with 30 not out off 21 balls.Kapp produced some superb deliveries to build the pressure on Strikers’ openers and it was Devine who earned the reward when Katie Mack’s extraordinary run of scoring was halted as he she drove to cover. Before this match Mack had made 332 runs in her last six innings for just one out.Without a run added van Niekerk also departed, edging Taneale Peschel down the leg side, and by the end of the powerplay the asking rate was above nine an over.Laura Wolvaardt and captain Tahlia McGrath rebuilt with a stand of 65 in eight overs which was forming a base from where Strikers could have run down the target. However, both fell within the space of six balls carving catches to the off-side ring which meant new batters had little time to get set.The prolific Scorchers opening pair of Devine and Beth Mooney made a solid if unspectacular start after being put into bat, reaching 0 for 37 after the powerplay. They were immediately aggressive against Amanda-Jade Wellington who conceded more in her first four balls than she did the entire record-breaking Eliminator spell, although she would fight back well.Neither opener could really cut loose and Strikers started to chip away at the top order. Mooney picked out mid-off, Devine was run out by a direct hit by Dane van Niekerk from short third and Chloe Piparo edged Darcie Brown who was rewarded for some rapid outswing bowling. At 3 for 75 in the 12th the innings was at a tipping point and there was caution from Kapp and Heather Graham which threatened to leave Scorchers short. However, Kapp started to find the boundary and King made a dynamic late entrance with three boundaries in a five-ball stay.

New Zealand must find way around Namibia's banana skin as race to the semi-finals heats up

With India shaping up to make a late charge and a demanding itinerary of their own, New Zealand have plenty to be wary of

Andrew Miller04-Nov-20212:09

Should New Zealand bring in Kyle Jamieson?

Big pictureThe heat is on in the Group 2 permutations, and New Zealand – for all that their destiny remains firmly in their own hands – know that an apparently comfortable route to the semi-finals could yet get a touch dicey if they drop their guard against two opponents who have scotched preconceptions to prove themselves the best of the rest.On paper, a final trio of group games comprising Scotland, Namibia and Afghanistan couldn’t really be more straightforward at this level. In reality, however, the intensity of both the itinerary (three day-games for New Zealand in five days, in three different cities) and the blazing heat of the afternoon desert sun poses an intensely awkward challenge – particularly given the stirrings elsewhere in race for second place, with India’s crunching victory over Afghanistan on Wednesday reawakening a challenge that looked to be dead on arrival.Related

Scenarios: India chasing down New Zealand and Afghanistan

So, how do New Zealand pace themselves as they enter a match that, with all due respect to a magnificently combative Namibia outfit, they really are not expected to lose? They were given a fright by Scotland in Dubai on Wednesday, not least by Mark Watt’s grafting fingerspin, and while Michael Leask’s devil-may-care hitting came too late to truly challenge an upset, it did limit the margin of defeat to a slender 16 runs – not the net run rate boost that Kane Williamson’s men might have been envisaging to guard against accidents in the final analysis. Moreover, speaking in the wake of his Player-of-the-Match-winning 93, Martin Guptill conceded he had been pretty “cooked” by the conditions, as he missed some of New Zealand’s fielding stint with cramp. He’ll have to replenish his fluids fast, as more of the same sweltering awaits in Sharjah on Friday, and again against Afghanistan on Sunday in Abu Dhabi, by which stage India will – in all probability – have beaten Scotland to leave themselves primed to strike in the event of a slip-up. By contrast, Afghanistan – ever dangerous in spite of some heavy losses – will have rested up for three days in their Abu Dhabi base before that critical clash. It could, of course, be entirely academic. New Zealand could simply stretch their legs from hereon in, much as they did in last week’s crushing win over the pre-tournament favourites India, in which the established world-beating credentials of Trent Boult and Williamson dovetailed superbly with their less-heralded matchwinners, Ish Sodhi, Mitchell Santner and Daryl Mitchell, to deliver a thumping eight-wicket win with 33 balls to spare.Gerhard Erasmus goes aerial as Namibia take the fight to Pakistan•AFP/Getty Images

And yet Namibia, lest we forget, were briefly the Group 2 leaders after a fine victory over Scotland in Abu Dhabi. They also beat Ireland and the Netherlands in the first round, and earned the respect of Pakistan’s high-flyers in a gutsy 45-run loss earlier this week. With the experienced all-round knowhow of David Wiese anchoring their challenge with bat and ball, they’ve found a succession of star turns in a variety of key roles, not least the aggressive left-arm pace of Ruben Trumpelmann, whose consistent menace against all opponents has propelled him firmly onto the world stage.Anticipating an upset might stretching a point. But given that Group 1 had been earmarked as the supposed “group of death”, due to the presence therein of Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, compared to the apparent makeweights on the other side of the draw, Namibia’s poise, tenacity and unfettered talent has been a joy to watch. They’ll be in it to win it on Friday. Why not? They’ve waited the best part of two decades for their second go on the global stage, and these are the times of their lives.Form guideNew Zealand WWLWL (last five completed matches, most recent first)
Namibia LLWWWIn the spotlightWith his imposing frame and propensity for raw power, Martin Guptill is a crucial cog in New Zealand’s T20I line-up, and one who came good at a vital moment to guard against any accidents versus Scotland. His 93 from 56 balls was his first half-century in the format since March, but if he is to build on that innings, he may need to overcome one major weakness in his record. His record against left-arm pace bowlers pales compared to all other forms of bowling – with an average of 13.8 in 16 innings, and a strike rate of 78. Trumpelmann, JJ Smit and Jan Frylinck may be queuing up to keep the pressure on.What New Zealand need: a fully firing Martin Guptill•Alex Davidson/Getty Images

Batting in the powerplay has proven tricky for Namibia in this tournament, with only one opening stand exceeding either 30 runs or a run-a-ball in six attempts, including four different pairings at the top of the order. Craig Williams had a go in three of those outings, without any great success, but he was back at No. 3 against Pakistan this week, from where his 40 from 37 balls offered a bit of ballast before Wiese’s late onslaught helped Namibia to finish on a high. At the age of 37, and having come out of retirement specially for this campaign, he’ll be looking to produce more of the same on a wicket that may not be far removed from the sorts of slow, low surface that he’s encountered back home in Windhoek.Team newsDespite the challenge of the itinerary, there is little need for New Zealand to fiddle with their successful line-up. Kyle Jamieson continues to wait in the wings in case of the need to rotate the quicks.New Zealand (probable): 1 Daryl Mitchell, 2 Martin Guptill, 3 Kane Williamson (capt), 4 Devon Conway (wk), 5 Glenn Phillips, 6 Jimmy Neesham, 7 Mitchell Santner, 8 Adam Milne, 9 Tim Southee, 10 Trent Boult/Kyle Jamieson, 11 Ish Sodhi.Namibia’s captain Gerhard Erasmus has been coping with a broken finger, sustained in the tournament warm-ups, but he’s unlikely to bow out now. The one change could come in the bowling stakes, where Ben Shikongo could make way once more for Bernard Scholtz.Namibia (probable): 1 Stephen Baard, 2 Michael van Lingen, 3 Craig Williams, 4 Gerhard Erasmus (capt), 5 David Wiese, 6 JJ Smit, 7 Jan Frylinck, 8 Zane Green (wk), 9 Jan Nicol Loftie-Eaton, 10 Ruben Trumpelmann, 11 Bernard Scholtz/Ben Shikongo.Stats that matter This will be the first meeting between New Zealand and Namibia in any international format. With 63 wickets in 48 appearances since the 2016 World T20, Ish Sodhi is the joint-second most-successful bowler in the T20Is in the past five years. Only Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan (83 in 41) has more. The average first-innings score in 22 T20Is at Sharjah is 146 for 7. However, in a reflection of the difficulty of defending totals, the average winning first-innings score at the venue rises to 163 for 6. Both teams have played a solitary T20I in Sharjah. Each of those contests came in the current tournament, with Namibia defeating Ireland in the first round, before Pakistan’s victory over New Zealand in the Super 12s. Quotes “They are [dangerous] for sure. Especially in T20 cricket, there’s an upset just around the corner. We’ve got to be ready. We’ve got to treat it as just another match, not look too far ahead, obviously.”
Mitchell Santner acknowledges the threat that Namibia will pose in their penultimate outing of the tournament“In T20 cricket, one person can take the game away from the opposition. And if it’s your day, you can stand up and be that Man-of-the-Match performance, and you never know what can happen.”

Amorim setting sights on signing "cheeky" £90m Antony upgrade for Man Utd

Already thinking about potential upgrades, Ruben Amorim has reportedly set his sights on signing an upgrade on Antony worth as much as £90m for Manchester United in 2025.

Man Utd transfer news

Amorim’s first job will be to make up for any damage done by the end of Erik ten Hag’s tenure. The Red Devils looked down and out under the Dutchman in what has become an all too familiar sight over the last decade. The sacked manager became the latest of several failures on a list that includes Jose Mourinho and Louis van Gaal to leave Manchester United back at square one.

Man Utd now keeping tabs on "crazy" £337,000-a-week Champions League winner

This would be the deal of the summer…

ByTom Cunningham Nov 2, 2024

Now, INEOS – with their first managerial hire – will be desperately hoping to see Amorim end that trend to take United back to the top of English football for the first time since the Sir Alex Ferguson days.

However, before the Sporting CP manager arrives on 11th November, former striker Ruud van Nistelrooy has been tasked with taking interim charge and will look to make it two wins from two against Chelsea this afternoon after overseeing a scintillating 5-2 thrashing of Leicester City in the Carabao Cup.

Meanwhile, as soon as 39-year-old Amorim arrives, changes could be afoot. According to CaughtOffside, Amorim has already set his sights on signing Khvicha Kvaratskhelia for Manchester United in a deal that would need to be worth as much as £90m to match Napoli’s reported valuation.

Napoli winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia

The winger has been back to his best under Antonio Conte and could yet reap the rewards as a result. The man that Amorim seemingly wants to replace Antony, there’s no doubt that Kvaratskhelia would quickly offer Manchester United a much-needed injection of attacking impetus in place of the struggling Brazilian.

Showing the door to a player who epitomised Ten Hag’s failures would also be quite the way to commence the Amorim era at Old Trafford.

"Cheeky" Kvaratskhelia would end Antony nightmare

Signing Kvaratskhelia for a reported £90m would represent how Manchester United should have spent such money instead of welcoming Antony from Ajax in 2023.

The winger has never quite made the impact that his hefty price tag suggested he ought to, and looks destined to join a worryingly long list of transfer flops at Old Trafford. However, it could be argued that Kvaratskhelia is showing all the signs that he would not join that list.

A class above not just Antony but even perhaps Marcus Rashford, Kvaratskhelia should be high on Manchester United’s list of candidates to begin the Amorim era in true style next summer. Still just 23 years old, the Georgia international is just getting started.

The Napoli star previously earned the praise of Liverpool legend Jurgen Klopp after he handed Trent Alexander-Arnold one of his toughest tests. The German dubbed Kvaratskhelia a “cheeky” player after a difficult battle for Manchester United’s Premier League rivals a couple of seasons ago.

Alex Ross and Sam Billings lead Sydney Thunder to handsome opening win

Daniel Sams and Gurinder Sandhu stood out with the ball to take combined figures of 5 for 39

Sydney Thunder made a succesful start to their BBL campaign, easing to a seven-wicket win over Brisbane Heat. The contest looked finely poised when Thunder slumped to 3 for 32 chasing Heat’s 8 for 140 at Manuka Oval, but an unbeaten 109-run stand between Alex Ross and Sam Billings saw them take complete control.Ross, who top scored with 61 not out off 46 balls to be named player of the match, was in command throughout striking seven fours and two sixes in a masterful display in which he scored freely around the ground.Thunder’s chase began poorly when Alex Hales was dismissed off the second ball, chipping a Xavier Bartlett delivery to cover. Matthew Gilkes looked in control, driving the second ball he faced for four through point and flicking another off his pads two overs later for six.Thunder then lost Sam Whiteman, who spooned a pull shot down midwicket’s throat off debutant Heat paceman Liam Guthrie for 12, to leave the side 2 for 28. Two balls later it was double delight for Guthrie, who trapped Gilkes lbw dismissing the danger man for 20 off 10 balls.Thunder were reeling until Billings played the perfect supporting role for Ross and they claimed the win with 17 balls to spare.Thunder quicks Daniel Sams and Gurinder Sandhu earlier combined for five wickets. Heat limped to 2 for 20 from their first four overs, with openers Max Bryant and Chris Lynn dismissed in quick succession.Bryant departed for 5 after popping a leading edge into the hands of Ross off Nathan McAndrew’s bowling. Lynn joined him three balls later, smashing one straight to short cover off Sandhu.Ben Duckett and Sam Heazlett steadied without playing too many huge shots and crossed the 10-over mark at 2 for 58, having built their side a platform. As the pressure built, Heazlett teed off and was lucky to be dropped in successive balls after skying Ben Cutting in the 12th over.Heat took flight in their Power Surge, smashing 12 off the first over before Heazlett miscued a slower ball to be caught and bowled by Sams. The first and only six of the innings came in the 18th over when Bartlett hit one into the Bob Hawke Stand, his cameo 26 off 18 balls helping Heat find some late runs.

Ayto set to make new Arsenal approach to January striker target this week

Arsenal have been struggling for goals in recent weeks, failing to find the net in three of their last seven games in all competitions.

“The lack of goals is a concern because you need goals to win games and be consistent,” Gunners boss Mikel Arteta admitted ahead of his side’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea earlier this month.

“That’s the only thing that people are going to judge. You can overrun the opponent, you can outperform the opponent in every single way. [But] it’s about whether you scored a goal,” he explained. “That’s the problem. The problem has to be resolved by scoring more goals than the opponents.”

Development: Arsenal chiefs now looking to sign £70m+ France star on loan

Arsenal can’t seem to find the back of the net at the moment.

ByBarney Lane Nov 8, 2024

To solve that issue, Arteta and the powers that be, namely stand-in sporting director Jason Ayto, are understood to be monitoring a number of strikers ahead of the January transfer window.

The 39 year-old has stepped into the shoes of Edu Gaspar, who is on gardening leave ahead of what is a relatively surprising move to Nottingham Forest, and the likes of Paris Saint-Germain star Randal Kolo Muani and Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyokeres have been linked as possible new number nines.

Vlahovic wanted after New Year

According to Caught Offside’s Daily Briefing, Juventus forward Dusan Vlahovic is another of those that Arsenal are currently keeping tabs on. The publication reports that the Gunners are weighing up a January move for the Serbia international, and Ayto and Co are expected to approach to begin contacts in the coming days.

Vlahovic’s contract with Juve expires in the summer of 2026, and while the Italian club are said to be trying to tie him down to a new deal, they are struggling to make progress. Manchester United flop Joshua Zirkzee was named by The Daily Briefing as the player Juventus would look to sign to replace Vlahovic should he leave for The Emirates.

Dusan Vlahovic's career so far

Vlahovic, 24, began his career in his home country with FZ Partizan, but made his name in Italy with Fiorentina, scoring 49 goals in 108 games for the Purples. Since moving to Juventus in the summer of 2022, he’s kept that good form going, netting 50 goals in 117 games.

Nine of those goals have come in just 16 games this season as Juventus have enjoyed an unbeaten start to their Serie A campaign.

Despite being a key player for Juventus, however, recent comments from the striker, once described as “lethal” by BBC Sport’s Phil Dawkes, suggest he’s not entirely happy in Turin.

Speaking to RSI after Serbia’s 1-1 draw with Switzerland earlier this month, Vlahovic explained how he prefers playing for his country than his club.

“It is a bit easier for me when there is another striker, because [Alexander] Mitrovic holds up the ball and engages in aerial duels, so I can make more of my own characteristics and qualities,” he said.

“The coach also does not require many defensive duties from me, so that makes it easier too. With my physicality, I can’t really run that much and am not as fresh in my finishing when I’ve been working so hard.”

CIANORTE ABRE O PLACAR LOGO NO INÍCIO

POUCA CRIAÇÃO DO PARANÁ
