Newcastle now eyeing 14-goal Bundesliga star after Mitchell sends scouts

Looking to sharpen what has been a blunt attack at times this season, Newcastle United are now reportedly eyeing a move to sign one of the most in-form players in Europe’s top five leagues.

Newcastle transfer news

Suffering defeat against West Ham United last time out, Newcastle have taken one step forward and two steps back throughout the current campaign in a major dent in their European aspirations. Eddie Howe’s side had looked back to their best after defeating title contenders Arsenal, but were quickly brought back down to earth by a struggling West Ham side.

What has been made clear by their inconsistency is that the Magpies need to add further depth to an injury-struck squad when the January transfer window arrives. Names such as Bryan Mbeumo and Antoine Semenyo have already been linked to St James’ Park on that front, but Paul Mitchell may yet look to make his biggest statement yet as Newcastle’s sporting director.

According to Graeme Bailey of The Boot Room, Newcastle are now eyeing a move to sign Omar Marmoush from Eintracht Frankfurt after sending scouts to watch the attacker in action in recent weeks. They’re far from alone in their interest, however, given that Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal have also been mentioned in pursuit of the Egyptian.

Marmoush has been one of if not the most in-form players in Europe’s top five leagues so far this season, scoring 14 goals and assisting another 10 in just 17 appearances in all competitions. In current form, the 25-year-old is simply untouchable.

Newcastle move to bring 31 y/o free agent back to England and get response

He’s got unfinished business in the Premier League…

ByTom Cunningham Nov 27, 2024

As relayed by The Boot Room, Frankfurt are incredibly unlikely to sell their star in the January transfer window, but a reported £50m price-tag could certainly tempt Newcastle when the summer arrives.

"Fantastic" Marmoush would complete Newcastle's front three

When looking at Newcastle’s front three, it’s clear that they’re lacking just one more starter. Miguel Almiron is arguably past his best and heading for the exit door. The same can be said for Callum Wilson, whilst question marks still remain over whether Harvey Barnes can become anything other than a super-sub. So the door is certainly open for a player of Marmoush’s calibre.

Whilst perhaps swapping sides with Gordon, who’d then be playing off the right, Marmoush would inject some much-needed goals to share the responsibility with Isak. Suddenly having two players capable of reaching 15 or more goals in a single campaign, Newcastle would be far closer to their Champions League ambitions.

Marmoush has unsurprisingly been at the centre of praise in the current campaign, but Frankfurt manager Dino Topmoller was even full of positives for Marmoush last season, telling reporters as relayed by KingFut: “Omar is a fantastic boy who always gives maximum effort in addition to his blistering pace.

“I’m very impressed with his development in the final third, as he’s now a lot more calmer on the ball, he’s really good at runs from behind as well. He’s really taken a huge step in his development, especially with the way he’s played in the past few games.”

U-19 WC: Bethell's 88, Ahmed's four-for lift England to semi-finals

Meanwhile, West Indies, Zimbabwe post big wins in the Plate quarter-finals

Jacob Bethell smacked 88 in only 42 balls to make short work of South Africa’s modest total and secured England’s passage into the semi-finals of the U-19 World Cup. England legspinner Rehan Ahmed took 4 for 48 to bowl South Africa for 209 before Bethell set the tone in the chase, as England clinched victory with 112 balls to spare.Bethell scored 76 of his 88 runs in boundaries, hitting 16 fours and two sixes. His blitz took England to 104 for no loss at the end of their powerplay, and even though he fell in the 11th over, his innings allowed the rest of England’s batters to sail smoothly over the line. William Luxton, the No. 5, struck an unbeaten 41-ball 47 – including a six to win the game – after Bethell’s dismissal.Bethell had already provided England with a flying start when he struck Matthew Boast for two fours in the opening over, and he went even better in Boast’s second over, hitting four boundaries in four balls – two pulls and two drives. A straight hit for four through mid-on brought up his fifty in just 20 balls in the sixth over. The Barbados-born Bethell, who is England’s vice-captain, found the boundary in every over he spent in the middle. He was unafraid to play the reverse sweep and had contributed 83 by the time England’s opening stand crossed 100. His success allowed George Thomas, who faced far fewer balls in their partnership, to go at his own pace.Asakhe Tsaka found the eventual breakthrough, breaking the 110-run opening stand with Bethell miscueing a shot to deep midwicket. Thomas was then run out for 19. Tom Prest, the captain, and James Rew got starts before being lbw off Dewald Brevis. Luxton, though, extinguished all hopes for South Africa, seeing the chase through with a knock that contained six fours and two sixes, including slog-sweep over deep midwicket in the 32nd over to help England breach their target.Even though Bethell’s innings, which came at a strike rate of 209.52, expedited the win, England’s position in the contest was set up by their bowlers, led by Rehan’s four-for. He first had South Africa captain George Van Heerden top-edging a sweep before rattling Andile Simelane’s stumps with a yorker. He followed that up with the wicket of Michael Copeland to leave South Africa 136 for 5, before returning to take the final South Africa wicket and finish with 4 for 48.Dewald Brevis’ 97 went in vain for South Africa against England•ICC via Getty

That South Africa reached 209 was courtesy the tournament’s most consistent batter. Brevis had struck 65, 104 and 96 in the group stage, and in the quarter-final he played a lone hand of 97. Coming in at 11 for 1, he began attacking from the start, and ended up hitting nine fours and four sixes in his 88-ball innings. He was the only batter who dominated England’s bowling, using his strong build to go over the top too. After he fell three short of his second century of the tournament, No. 9 Boast (22) and No. 11 Asakhe Tsaka (18) lifted South Africa to 209.England will now face either Sri Lanka or Afghanistan in the semi-final. 148 all out (Oru 27, Nandu 2-17, Thorne 2-30) by 169 runsOver at the Plate quarter-final in Diego Martin, West Indies opener Matthew Nandu hit a 134-ball 128 to give them a 169-run win over Papua New Guinea.Nandu first put on a 155-run opening stand with Shaqkere Parris, who made 64, before following it up with a 107-run third-wicket stand with Kevin Wickham (61*). That took West Indies to 298 for 3. By the time Nandu fell in the 49th over, and despite losing five more wickets in the last ten balls of the innings, West Indies finished on an imposing 317 for 7.The six West Indies bowlers then bowled PNG out for 148, with extras (34) being the highest contributor in the chase. Aue Oru, the No. 6 was not out on 27 with six PNG batters finishing with single-digit scores. Nandu, high on confidence after his 128, then returned as the pick of the West Indies bowlers to take 2 for 14 in his six overs of offspin. In the Plate quarter-final match in Port of Spain, Zimbabwe completed a big win too, defeating Scotland by 108 runs. Connor Mitchell and legspinner David Bennett took three wickets apiece to bowl Scotland out for 140 in their chase of 249.Zimbabwe’s innings was set up by the 78 from opener Matthew Welch and Brian Bennett’s 54 from No. 4. Before his three-for, David Bennett scored a handy 41-ball 35, and despite a lower-order collapse, the hosts finished on 248. Welch, who scored seven fours and a six in his 117-ball stay, put on 112 for the second wicket with Brian Bennett to lay the foundation in the Zimbabwe innings.Scotland lost five wickets by the time they reached 102. Mitchell then ran through the lower-middle order with three scalps, and David Bennett cleaned up the tail to end Scotland’s challenge in the 39th over. Tomas Mackintosh (25) and Jack Jarvis (24) top-scored in Scotland’s 140.

Renshaw reels off half-century for Queensland on rain-reduced day

Brendan Doggett made two late breakthroughs for South Australia with only 72 overs possible at the Gabba

Queensland batter Matt Renshaw posted a half-century on a rain-reduced opening day of a unique three-day Sheffield Shield clash with South Australia at the Gabba. The match was reduced to a three-day affair due to severe flooding in Brisbane after heavy storms lashed southeast Queensland and northern New South Wales in recent weeks. The match was delayed on the opening morning due to more rain but the Gabba groundstaff did a superb job to get the surface playable and the pitch played well considering all the weather.Renshaw made a composed 63, his second 50-plus score of the season, while Queensland opener Bryce Street made 43 as the hosts finished at 4 for 158 after being sent into bat by South Australia. Brendan Doggett’s two late breakthroughs gave the visitors some momentum heading into the second day.South Australia made their first breakthrough in the 13th over with Liam Scott trapping Joe Burns lbw for 13 before Renshaw and Street ground out a 67-run stand to move the Bulls to 1 for 100 after tea. Scott returned to remove Street with a lovely delivery from around the wicket. The left-hander was caught on the crease to a good length ball that angled in and seamed away a touch to brush the outside edge.Renshaw added 50 more with the in-form batter Jack Clayton before he shouldered arms to Doggett from around the wicket and was adjudged lbw to a ball that did seam back. Doggett made hay with the lights on late in the day bowling a brisk spell trapping Sam Truloff lbw four overs later. Clayton got through to stumps unscathed 31 not out alongside Max Bryant.

£78m duo miss out through injury: Arsenal predicted lineup vs Man United

Arsenal are back. So some would proclaim anyway. Over the last three matches, Mikel Arteta’s side have scored a combined haul of 13 goals.

It’s amazing what happens when Martin Odegaard is in your team, isn’t it? The skipper missed a 12-game period after the first international break of the season and during that run, the Gunners rather fell off a cliff.

A rugged period between October and November’s international break saw Arsenal fail to win a Premier League game and that means they’re now nine points behind league leaders Liverpool, even if they did hold them to a 2-2 draw.

That said, Manchester United on Wednesday evening are likely to provide a far tougher test than the likes of Nottingham Forest and West Ham United.

As it happens, they’re now managed by Ruben Amorim who used to coach the Sporting team that Arsenal so ruthlessly dispatched in the Champions League a week ago.

The last time Arsenal played Manchester United at the Emirates

“Gabriel Jesus, he’s sat down one, and he’s won the game!” The roar from Peter Drury was glorious if you are an Arsenal supporter.

What a game this was back in September 2023. Arteta’s side needed a big win early in the Premier League campaign and that’s precisely what they got, defeating their old rivals 3-1 at the Emirates.

gabriel-jesus-arsenal-alexandre-lacazette-transfer-arteta-edu-lyon

They were made to work incredibly hard for it, however. Marcus Rashford opened the scoring on 27 minutes before Odegaard hit back just a minute later.

We had to wait until injury time for the game to be decided though. That wasn’t before Alejandro Garnacho scored but saw his strike cruelly disallowed, a goal dear old Erik ten Hag probably still suggests was onside to this day.

Alas, the rub of the green was not with the Red Devils on that sunny afternoon. In the 96th minute, the ball fell to mega-money summer arrival Declan Rice at the back home who lashed home via a deflection for his first goal in Arsenal colours.

Off he went, darting away towards the corner flag, engulfed by his teammates. What a moment. The Emirates was bedlam.

The match was then decided in the 101st minute. The hosts broke from a corner through the lesser-spotted Fabio Vieira. He slid in Jesus who cooly sat Diogo Dalot down before sticking the ball past Andre Onana.

Arsenal will hope for a slightly less dramatic affair on Wednesday but they will take three points in any way they come as they look to chase down Liverpool.

Arsenal team and injury news

The North London side may have Odegaard back in the fold but this doesn’t look like a fully fit squad just yet.

The big news we await concerns defensive stalwart Gabriel Magalhaes. The Brazilian took a blow to the face at the London Stadium, an incident that saw him win a penalty for his side.

That being said, he was withdrawn at half-time with Arsenal citing management of the knock he picked up in Lisbon a few days prior.

Mikel Merino and Thomas Partey were both absent from the matchday squad against West Ham and could miss out again. Merino sat out last time owing to a knee injury while Partey’s issue was described as muscular, meaning the £33m and £45m signings are both doubts.

While their involvement remains more uncertain, full-backs Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu definitely remain out.

Arsenal's predicted lineup vs Manchester United

With Merino and Partey still doubts for Wednesday evening’s clash, it means a relatively unchanged team is likely to take to the field at the Emirates.

The undisputed number one, David Raya, maintains his place between the sticks and providing Gabriel is fit after Saturday evening’s substitution, will have an unchanged defence in front of him.

Jorginho shone in the win at the former Olympic Stadium and deserves to keep his place next to Declan Rice.

There might be claims for Kai Havertz to be rested but after scoring in consecutive fixtures he starts ahead of Jesus again.

The only change to the starting lineup will see Leandro Trossard drop out. Like Havertz, the Belgian has scored in successive outings but with Gabriel Martinelli waiting in the wings and ready to torment United’s defence with his pace, this feels like an ideal match for the Brazilian.

ESTREIA NO MARACA

‘ABRAÇO’ A PEDRO?

REAÇÕES A ISLA

Zak Crawley, Ben Compton fifties give air of summer to Kent's pursuit

Parkinson takes all three host wickets after Qadri’s six-wicket haul has Lancashire all out for 506

Paul Edwards15-Apr-2022

The sensible folk who suggest that we shouldn’t play first-class cricket beyond the margins of summer will have to reckon with the April we are enjoying. When Phil Salt eased Jackson Bird’s first ball of the morning to deep square-leg for a single, only the barely leafed trees would have convinced a stranger that this game was not taking place in high summer. The sky was little more than wisped with cloud and you needed to be a belt-and-braces cove to wear a coat. Within ten minutes of the second day beginning at the Spitfire Ground, Steven Croft had taken both Bird and Matt Milnes for off-side boundaries and pragmatic Kent supporters became reconciled to the probability of their batsmen facing a tall score for the second successive game.Nothing to churn the bowels there, of course. Last week, Ollie Robinson’s batsmen piled up 581 for 9 declared in reply to Essex’s 514 in a game that was not only drawn but also hung and quartered. Such totals were not unusual in the first round of matches and nor were draws. Some in the crowd reckoned this match would have the same outcome when Kent’s openers put on 109 in reply to Lancashire’s 506, but the atmosphere changed in a last hour during which Matt Parkinson took three prime wickets, among them that of Zak Crawley for 54 lovely runs. Yet one wondered where those early-season, seaming pitches had gone, along with the 70mph bowlers salivating at the thought of them. Lancashire’s batsmen played Darren Stevens with a broomstick on the first day here, albeit a very straight one.The mileposts of acquisition came and went this morning, some more noticeable than others: Salt passed fifty in his first Lancashire innings; the century partnership came up; then the 400; then Croft’s 150. The batsmen walked many of their singles and felt the season’s young sun on their backs. On the other hand, the report of Salt’s square cut off Nathan Gilchrist would not have shamed a grouse moor. Lancashire’s bowlers relaxed in the pavilion and reflected that the best moment of the match was when Dane Vilas won the toss. Then Robinson switched Hamidullah Qadri to the Pavilion End and Croft edged his first ball to the Kent keeper behind the stumps. He departed for 155, which was one short of his career-best.Half an hour later, Salt lunched on 97, an arrangement which allowed the Lancastrian statisticians some 273 miles away to prepare a mighty array of statistics on the county’s debut centurions. Alack, they went unquoted. Qadri’s second ball of the afternoon was a squalid long-hop but Salt thrashed it straight to Daniel Bell-Drummond and thus became the first of four batsmen to be dismissed by the Afghanistan-born spinner in 16 balls. Hasan Ali was the last of these and his dismissal left Parkinson facing the hat-trick delivery, a situation which often makes the bowler favourite. But Bolton’s finest squirted the thing through gully and Lancashire had 500 up before Qadri knocked out Lamb’s middle peg to complete a career-best 6 for 129.Kent’s reply followed the pattern of the previous two days. The only change seemed to be that instead of wickets falling infrequently, they wouldn’t fall at all. Hasan’s first spell for Lancashire was more successful than his first innings and Crawley needed good judgement to let a few balls go. The Pakistani seamer has a whippy action and his left arm does so little work that a batsman might be disconcerted when the ball is delivered. But Crawley followed his checked drive off Tom Bailey in the third over with an even more conclusive stroke through mid-off when Lancashire’s new signing over-pitched. Later the opener would play a back-foot force through the covers off Danny Lamb and a brace of cuts off Luke Wood. These bowlers are not poor players; whatever Kevin Pietersen may say, they are entitled to professional careers. But they were mastered this Good Friday afternoon by a Test match cricketer. At the other end Ben Compton was batting with comparable assurance and offered further evidence of his determination to make the most of his chance at Canterbury. His century at Chelmsford has not sated his appetite. When Kent came in for tea on 51 without loss after 21 overs, Lancashire’s bowlers surely thought that a day or so of hard pounding for slight reward might lie ahead, even if they left such views unexpressed. As in the visitors’ innings, leg spin offered the greatest threat. Perhaps guided by Robinson’s late change, Vilas brought Parkinson on from the Pavilion End and Kent’s openers paid him due respects. Quite apart from his two wickets, Parkinson conceded only 39 runs off his 20 overs on this second day; like Liam Patterson-White, he is finding that the demise of spin bowling in April has been rather over-egged.His long spell was broken only by tea and his willingness to vary his flight while maintaining good lengths to batsmen of different heights was admirable. So it was pleasing when he gained his rewards in the final hour of play when what seemed to be a top spinner defeated Crawley’s only inelegant stroke of the day and wrecked his stumps. There was further grief for Kent when Bell-Drummond, having survived two full-throated lbw appeals from Hasan, was bowled by a lovely leg-spinner from Parkinson for 2. Four overs later, Tawanda Muyeye, having picked up Bailey for two assured leg-side fours was lbw to Parkinson when playing no shot. Lancashire thus collected their first point for bowling before Kent picked up theirs for batting. An hour earlier it had seemed a remote prospect. And still, it had been a day for light rollers and light hearts. You might have thought it a July evening and at least one spectator called it paradise. But then, he had sat in the Frank Woolley Stand and watched Crawley hit boundaries; he knew there were afternoons when poems write themselves.

Major update shared on "painful" new injury to Leeds star ahead of Preston

A major update on a “painful” injury to a Leeds United player has now been provided ahead of their game against Preston North End. The Whites made it back-to-back wins on Tuesday, as they beat play-off hopefuls Middlesbrough 3-1 at Elland Road, but not without a couple of injury scares.

The games are coming thick and fast now as football enters the Christmas period, and this is where injuries are more likely to occur, something Leeds are already too familiar with this season.

Ahead of the game against Boro, Farke revealed that defender Junior Firpo is sidelined for six weeks, as he’s suffered a hamstring injury. The German labelled the injury news as “heartbreaking,” as Firpo has been a key player for the Whites this season.

However, there was good news for the Championship side on Tuesday as they welcomed back Sam Byram, who was able to complete 85 minutes, and they also brought Ethan Ampadu back into the fold, which Farke is happy about.

Farke said on Byram and Ampadu’s return: “He reported some cramp and had been back for just one training session after injury. I was hoping that Ethan Ampadu could see the game out in the last moments, and apart from one or two passes, he was then also helping to bring this over the line, and we’re happy to have him back.”

Given the news that Firpo is going to be out for several weeks, Leeds could be expected to enter the market for a new left-back, but Farke has stated that they will not panic buy another full-back in January, given he will return at some point that month. Leeds were linked with a move for Khuliso Mudau, who can operate in both full-back positions, a few days ago, and the news of Firpo being injured may now intensify their interest.

Injury update provided on Leeds’ Joe Rodon

As reported by The Yorkshire Post, Daniel Farke has stated that defender Joe Rodon suffered a “painful” injury during their win over Middlesbrough on Tuesday. The 27-year-old, who joined the Whites on a permanent basis in the summer, has been a key player for the Championship side once again this season.

Rodon was very impressive last season while on loan from Spurs, playing in 43 Championship games, as Leeds just missed out on promotion. Farke was keen to bring him back, and they did just that, and it is a move that has worked out perfectly, as he’s started every league game this season.

However, that record is potentially in jeopardy, as Farke’s now revealed that Rodon suffered a “painful” injury ahead of their next game against Preston. Farke said: “He was hit on his knee, and I think there’s a bruise, and it’s pretty painful. But he’s also a warrior, and we couldn’t afford to lose him.”

The Welsh international played the full 90 minutes on Tuesday night, and Farke will be hoping his defender can recover in time for what is likely to be a physical match at Deepdale on Saturday – the two sides shared 16 yellow cards and one red card across their two head-to-heads last season.
