Big pictureIndia are on the cusp of their second successive ODI series sweep against West Indies. This is a team without Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul and Jasprit Bumrah, to name just a few. Mohammed Siraj’s economical outings coupled with Shardul Thakur’s knack of picking up wickets have ensured India haven’t missed Bumrah or Bhuvneshwar Kumar.While Siraj’s accuracy in the last over denied West Indies in the first ODI, Axar Patel’s heist in the second ensured that they pulled off a record chase at the Queen’s Park Oval to seal their third consecutive ODI series win.It’s been smooth sailing for most part, but if there’s still an issue for India to sort out, it could be their batting through the middle overs. From overs 11 to 40 in the second ODI, India scored 170 but also lost five wickets. In the first match, they managed 175 for 4 in the same phase.In ODIs this year, India have lost an average of 4.18 wickets per innings – 46 wickets in 11 outings – in the middle overs. Only West Indies (5.29), Australia (5.25) and Zimbabwe (5) have done worse than them, among Full-Member teams. More runs from Suryakumar Yadav and Deepak Hooda – who are yet to fire at full potential in this series – could go some way towards improving this facet of India’s game.West Indies haven’t done all that badly either, despite results not having gone their way so far. They’ve struck regularly through the middle overs to keep India in check, and their batters have posted two successive 300-plus totals.Perhaps one area they could look into is their death bowling, and particularly their use of Romario Shepherd in that phase. He bowled the 42nd and 47th overs of India’s chase on Sunday, and gave away 27 runs off those two overs, and the punishment he took wasn’t a one-off. Among all bowlers to have bowled at least 60 balls in the last 10 overs this year, Shepherd (10.28) has the worst economy rate. In the absence of Holder, he has assumed a leadership role, often running in from deep third to offer suggestions to Jayden Seales during the second ODI. He was expensive with the new ball in the first ODI, conceding 29 off his first three overs, but came back well to help West Indies tie India down later on, getting both Axar and Hooda bowled in the 49th over. In the next match, he was tighter in his lines and more disciplined in his opening spell, giving away just 14 off his first three overs. While Reece Topley had him playing on at Lord’s earlier this month, he has chopped on to Akeal Hosein and Kyle Mayers in this series. This run of dismissals has also coincided with a bit of a lean patch in the format – he has only crossed 20 once in his last five ODI innings. Borthwick and Jones built the foundations of another solid partnership, passing fifty before the lunch break with the hosts adding a patient 71 runs in the session for the loss of only Lees.Borthwick found his rhythm after lunch and worked his way to his sixth fifty of the season, but for the sixth time of the campaign the Durham skipper failed to convert his platform into a hundred. The left-hander played a loose waft against Umesh Yadav to present the seamer with a simple return catch for 55, ending a stand worth 107 for the second wicket. Nic Maddinson had a brief stay in the middle as a stumble going for a second run cost the Aussie as he was run out by Yadav and Bamber for 17.Jones continued his fine knock and opted for an aggressive approach after being struck on the head by a Yadav bouncer. He dispatched a four and two sixes in three-straight deliveries off Yadav to power his way to his first score of over 150 in first-class cricket. The 24-year-old pressed on in the evening session and recorded his maiden double-century with a drive into the off-side, reaching the milestone from 373 balls.Jones’ mammoth innings was ended by Roland-Jones lbw for 206, but only after putting Durham into a dominant position. Bedingham added a quick-fire 62 from 87 balls as the hosts accelerated the run rate before declaring to leave themselves an hour to bowl at Middlesex. The third Test between England and South Africa will resume on Saturday “to pay tribute” to Queen Elizabeth II. However, there will be no extension of the Test, with South Africa set to depart from the UK on Tuesday.Following the death of the Queen, day two at the Kia Oval was cancelled as a mark of respect, along with all scheduled matches in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy. Following conversations with government, the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), and between the ECB and CSA, it was agreed to continue the Test match. England women’s T20I match against India at Durham will also go ahead on Saturday evening.The game will resume on day three, following a first-day washout and then the suspension of Friday’s play, with England bowling having won the toss.Related

“Cricket will resume on Saturday to pay tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and honour her remarkable life and service,” read an ECB statement.”Following the cancellation of Friday’s cricket fixtures as a mark of respect on announcement of her death, the England and Wales Cricket Board can confirm that play will resume from Saturday including international, domestic, and recreational fixtures. The decision has been taken after consultation with DCMS and in line with Official National Mourning guidance.”This means the Men’s Test match between England and South Africa will begin at The Oval and the Women’s IT20 match between England and India will also go ahead at the Riverside in Durham. The scheduled match between England and Sri Lanka Men’s U19 along with recreational cricket fixtures will also take place as planned.”Before each match, a minute’s silence will be observed followed by the national anthem. All players and coaches will wear black armbands. Branded inventory will be replaced with messaging paying cricket’s respects to the Queen.The ECB had been hopeful of extending the Test match into Tuesday to ensure four days of play. However, CSA chief executive Pholetsi Moseki confirmed to ESPNcricinfo the tourists would stick to their original itinerary ahead of leaving for a limited-overs tour of India on September 23.”Yes we have lost a day,” Moseki said. “The team was part of the decision, considering that they are due to fly to India a few days later after their return.”In an official statement, Moseki added: “CSA is in full support of the ECB’s decision to go ahead with the third Test match between England and South Africa following the UK’s day of mourning. After consultation with the Proteas’ team management and given the schedule ahead, it was clear that it would not be in the players’ interests to extend the Test and reduce the few days the players have with their families before another long tour.”There was cautious optimism on Friday morning that the Test would continue. The ECB was part of a 9.30am DCMS meeting with other national sporting bodies whereby the advice given was to make their own individual decisions. A government spokesperson said: “There is no requirement, or obligation, to cancel or postpone events or sporting fixtures, or close entertainment venues, during this period. It’s at the discretion of individual organisations.”They may wish to consider cancelling or postponing, particularly on the day of the state funeral, but they are under no obligation to do so.”Following that meeting, sources at the ECB and Surrey County Cricket Club, where the match is being hosted, were confident the game was likely to continue. The only sticking point seemed to be whether the resumption on Saturday would be “day two” or “day three”. The former would have required South Africa to move back their flight home, originally scheduled for Tuesday.
