Can West Indies translate their competitiveness into a consolation win?

India, meanwhile, could look to rotate their line-up with the series already in their bag

Big pictureIndia are on the cusp of their second successive ODI series sweep against West Indies. This is a team without Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul and Jasprit Bumrah, to name just a few. Mohammed Siraj’s economical outings coupled with Shardul Thakur’s knack of picking up wickets have ensured India haven’t missed Bumrah or Bhuvneshwar Kumar. While Siraj’s accuracy in the last over denied West Indies in the first ODI, Axar Patel’s heist in the second ensured that they pulled off a record chase at the Queen’s Park Oval to seal their third consecutive ODI series win. It’s been smooth sailing for most part, but if there’s still an issue for India to sort out, it could be their batting through the middle overs. From overs 11 to 40 in the second ODI, India scored 170 but also lost five wickets. In the first match, they managed 175 for 4 in the same phase. In ODIs this year, India have lost an average of 4.18 wickets per innings – 46 wickets in 11 outings – in the middle overs. Only West Indies (5.29), Australia (5.25) and Zimbabwe (5) have done worse than them, among Full-Member teams. More runs from Suryakumar Yadav and Deepak Hooda – who are yet to fire at full potential in this series – could go some way towards improving this facet of India’s game.West Indies haven’t done all that badly either, despite results not having gone their way so far. They’ve struck regularly through the middle overs to keep India in check, and their batters have posted two successive 300-plus totals.Perhaps one area they could look into is their death bowling, and particularly their use of Romario Shepherd in that phase. He bowled the 42nd and 47th overs of India’s chase on Sunday, and gave away 27 runs off those two overs, and the punishment he took wasn’t a one-off. Among all bowlers to have bowled at least 60 balls in the last 10 overs this year, Shepherd (10.28) has the worst economy rate. Moreover, he only has three wickets in seven innings in that phase. With Keemo Paul and Jason Holder – who missed the first two ODIs after testing positive for Covid-19 – breathing down his neck, Shepherd may have to improve this facet of his game to keep his place in the XI.Form guideWest Indies LLLLL (last five completed ODIs, most recent first)
India WWWLWIn the spotlightDespite India scoring over 300 in each of the first two ODIs, Alzarri Joseph has managed an economy rate of 5.35 and has also picked up four wickets. In the absence of Holder, he has assumed a leadership role, often running in from deep third to offer suggestions to Jayden Seales during the second ODI. He was expensive with the new ball in the first ODI, conceding 29 off his first three overs, but came back well to help West Indies tie India down later on, getting both Axar and Hooda bowled in the 49th over. In the next match, he was tighter in his lines and more disciplined in his opening spell, giving away just 14 off his first three overs. Joseph will have to keep his impressive form going if West Indies are to end their run of eight successive ODI defeats.Suryakumar Yadav has been chopping on more frequently than he’d want to•Associated Press

On Sunday, Suryakumar Yadav inside-edged the ball onto his stumps for the third time in his last four ODI innings. While Reece Topley had him playing on at Lord’s earlier this month, he has chopped on to Akeal Hosein and Kyle Mayers in this series. This run of dismissals has also coincided with a bit of a lean patch in the format – he has only crossed 20 once in his last five ODI innings. Can he break this sequence on Wednesday?Team newsJason Holder has recovered and is available for selection for the final ODI. With the series already lost, young Keacy Carty and Keemo Paul, who has been passed fit, could get an outing.West Indies (probable): 1 Shai Hope (wk), 2 Kyle Mayers, 3 Shamarh Brooks/Keacy Carty, 4 Brandon King, 5 Nicholas Pooran (capt), 6 Rovman Powell, 7 Akeal Hosein, 8 Romario Shepherd/Jason Holder, 9 Alzarri Joseph, 10 Jayden Seales/Keemo Paul, 11 Hayden Walsh.India could get Prasidh Krishna back, perhaps in place of either Mohammed Siraj or Avesh Khan. Ravindra Jadeja’s knee niggle had ruled him out of the first two ODIs, as per BCCI’s release. In case he’s fit to return, Axar may have to make way despite his match-winning half-century on Sunday, unless India choose to play two left-arm spinners – and strengthen their batting – and leave out Yuzvendra Chahal, who is also not part of the squad for the T20I series. With the series already in their bag, India may also look to give the likes of Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ishan Kishan or Arshdeep Singh a go.India (probable): 1 Shikhar Dhawan (capt), 2 Shubman Gill, 3 Shreyas Iyer, 4 Suryakumar Yadav, 5 Sanju Samson (wk), 6 Deepak Hooda, 7 Axar Patel/Ravindra Jadeja, 8 Shardul Thakur, 9 Mohammed Siraj, 10 Yuzvendra Chahal, 11 Avesh Khan/Prasidh Krishna.Pitch and conditionsThe pitch for the first two games were largely good for batters, with changes in pace proving effective for the seamers. With only a two-day gap between the second and the third ODIs, a fresh track could be used. Weather-wise, there are thunderstorms predicted through the day – spectators may have to brace for stoppages.Stats and trivia Avesh Khan’s economy rate of 9.00 on Sunday was the worst by any India ODI debutant to have sent down at least five overs. The century in his hundredth ODI was Shai Hope’s third in 2022 – the joint-most with Babar Azam. Shreyas Iyer has passed 50 seven times in just eight ODI innings against West Indies.

Michael Jones' career-best 206 not out drives Durham into ascendancy

Middlesex openers unscathed at the close after imposing display from hosts

Michael Jones scored a career-best 206 to anchor Durham’s innings of 421 for seven declared on day two of their LV= Insurance County Championship Division Two clash against Middlesex at Seat Unique Riverside.Resuming on an overnight score of 78, the Durham opener played a perfect knock to play himself in before taking the attack to the visitors. Jones notched 28 boundaries and three sixes to post his maiden double-hundred, ensuring that Durham recorded four valuable batting points after losing the majority of day one due to rain.Scott Borthwick and David Bedingham supported Jones with half-centuries as the hosts opted to declare in an attempt to force a result over the final two days, while Toby Roland-Jones finished with impressive figures of four for 67 from his 28.3 overs. Middlesex openers Sam Robson and Mark Stoneman then saw their side through to the close unbeaten, although still trailing Durham’s total by 378 runs.Play was delayed in the morning session due to overnight rain, and when it began Durham added only nine runs to their overnight total before Roland-Jones nipped one back to bowl Alex Lees for 46, ending the opening stand for 141 as the left-hander failed to add to his total. The Middlesex bowlers attempted to make further inroads in a miserly first hour and bowled a tight line and length to keep Jones penned down on 99 for 19 deliveries. The opener endured a nervy wait, but finally got over the line by piercing a gap between mid-wicket and mid-on to notch his second first-class century. Borthwick and Jones built the foundations of another solid partnership, passing fifty before the lunch break with the hosts adding a patient 71 runs in the session for the loss of only Lees.Borthwick found his rhythm after lunch and worked his way to his sixth fifty of the season, but for the sixth time of the campaign the Durham skipper failed to convert his platform into a hundred. The left-hander played a loose waft against Umesh Yadav to present the seamer with a simple return catch for 55, ending a stand worth 107 for the second wicket. Nic Maddinson had a brief stay in the middle as a stumble going for a second run cost the Aussie as he was run out by Yadav and Bamber for 17.Jones continued his fine knock and opted for an aggressive approach after being struck on the head by a Yadav bouncer. He dispatched a four and two sixes in three-straight deliveries off Yadav to power his way to his first score of over 150 in first-class cricket. The 24-year-old pressed on in the evening session and recorded his maiden double-century with a drive into the off-side, reaching the milestone from 373 balls.Jones’ mammoth innings was ended by Roland-Jones lbw for 206, but only after putting Durham into a dominant position. Bedingham added a quick-fire 62 from 87 balls as the hosts accelerated the run rate before declaring to leave themselves an hour to bowl at Middlesex. However, the visitors got through to stumps unscathed, leaving the match in the balance heading into day three.

Deciding England-South Africa Test to resume but won't be extended

ECB efforts to add an extra day rebuffed due to South Africa’s scheduled departure on Tuesday

The third Test between England and South Africa will resume on Saturday “to pay tribute” to Queen Elizabeth II. However, there will be no extension of the Test, with South Africa set to depart from the UK on Tuesday.Following the death of the Queen, day two at the Kia Oval was cancelled as a mark of respect, along with all scheduled matches in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy. Following conversations with government, the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), and between the ECB and CSA, it was agreed to continue the Test match. England women’s T20I match against India at Durham will also go ahead on Saturday evening. The game will resume on day three, following a first-day washout and then the suspension of Friday’s play, with England bowling having won the toss.Related

First day washed out after England win toss, South Africa ring changes

Test suspended in mark of respect following death of Queen

“Cricket will resume on Saturday to pay tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and honour her remarkable life and service,” read an ECB statement.”Following the cancellation of Friday’s cricket fixtures as a mark of respect on announcement of her death, the England and Wales Cricket Board can confirm that play will resume from Saturday including international, domestic, and recreational fixtures. The decision has been taken after consultation with DCMS and in line with Official National Mourning guidance.”This means the Men’s Test match between England and South Africa will begin at The Oval and the Women’s IT20 match between England and India will also go ahead at the Riverside in Durham. The scheduled match between England and Sri Lanka Men’s U19 along with recreational cricket fixtures will also take place as planned.”Before each match, a minute’s silence will be observed followed by the national anthem. All players and coaches will wear black armbands. Branded inventory will be replaced with messaging paying cricket’s respects to the Queen. The ECB had been hopeful of extending the Test match into Tuesday to ensure four days of play. However, CSA chief executive Pholetsi Moseki confirmed to ESPNcricinfo the tourists would stick to their original itinerary ahead of leaving for a limited-overs tour of India on September 23.”Yes we have lost a day,” Moseki said. “The team was part of the decision, considering that they are due to fly to India a few days later after their return.”In an official statement, Moseki added: “CSA is in full support of the ECB’s decision to go ahead with the third Test match between England and South Africa following the UK’s day of mourning. After consultation with the Proteas’ team management and given the schedule ahead, it was clear that it would not be in the players’ interests to extend the Test and reduce the few days the players have with their families before another long tour.”There was cautious optimism on Friday morning that the Test would continue. The ECB was part of a 9.30am DCMS meeting with other national sporting bodies whereby the advice given was to make their own individual decisions. A government spokesperson said: “There is no requirement, or obligation, to cancel or postpone events or sporting fixtures, or close entertainment venues, during this period. It’s at the discretion of individual organisations.”They may wish to consider cancelling or postponing, particularly on the day of the state funeral, but they are under no obligation to do so.”Following that meeting, sources at the ECB and Surrey County Cricket Club, where the match is being hosted, were confident the game was likely to continue. The only sticking point seemed to be whether the resumption on Saturday would be “day two” or “day three”. The former would have required South Africa to move back their flight home, originally scheduled for Tuesday.

Following conversations after Thursday’s play, CSA was willing to follow the ECB’s lead, though there was reticence from the touring players to stay an extra day. England’s players were keen for the match to go ahead, with captain Ben Stokes declaring as much on Twitter. While the ECB discussed plans around logistics to continuing, CSA engaged in their own internal talks on Friday morning but were ultimately at the whim of the host board. Clarity was expected before lunch in order to give attending fans time to make or amend plans. At around 11:30am, there was trepidation at the ECB with the announcement of a blanket cancellation of football this weekend. Postponements from the Premier League and Women’s Super League right down to grassroots level gave way to anxiety that perhaps cricket should follow suit. But by the early afternoon, as sports such as rugby and horse racing announced they would keep to their weekend schedules, the decision to carry on in a respectful manner was easier to make. The day will begin with “God Save The King” as the national anthem, with King Charles III now in place. Had rain not washed out the entirety of the first day following the toss, which Stokes won, choosing to bowl first, “God Save The Queen” would have been played. The opening day washout means 98 overs are scheduled for the remaining three days. The series is currently tied 1-1, with South Africa bidding to strengthen their position in the World Test Championship table – they are currently second on points percentage, behind Australia.

Hutchinson 2.0: Ipswich lodge enquiry to sign a "superstar in the making"

As the early February deadline starts to loom large, Ipswich Town will be scrambling about to make some last minute purchases before the transfer window officially slams shut.

Already, the relegation-threatened Tractor Boys have added in some notable additions to their ranks in the form of both Julio Enciso and Ben Godfrey joining on loan, whilst Jaden Philogene-Bidace also arrived from Aston Villa on a permanent deal worth a bumper £20m.

Ipswich Town managerKieranMcKennaapplauds fans after the match

McKenna will hope this spending spree continues right up until the very end of the frantic window as the Suffolk side begin to be linked with this exciting youngster.

Ipswich lodge transfer enquiry

As per journalist Simon Phillips, Ipswich have asked Chelsea about the potential of taking on Carney Chukwuemeka as a bold new loan addition before the window closes, with those initial talks sparking off the back of the Blues being interested in Tractor Boys ace Liam Delap.

He further elaborates that Chukwuemeka is ‘not interested’ in relocating to Portman Road before the upcoming deadline, with other clubs in the form of Juventus, Porto and Everton all seeking out the 21-year-old’s signature too.

Chelsea's Carney Chukwuemeka in action

Ipswich will hope some movement can happen with this deal regardless of Chukwuemeka’s hesitancy to uproot to Suffolk, owing to the fact the newly promoted outfit have struck gold in the past with Chelsea youngsters.

After all, Omari Hutchinson wasn’t getting a look in whatsoever when on the books at Stamford Bridge, before then being given the platform to strut his stuff under McKenna.

Why Chukwuemeka could be Hutchinson 2.0

Indeed, Hutchinson was key to Ipswich unbelievably rising up to the Premier League at the end of last season, with the 21-year-old picking up plenty of goals and assists in the Championship.

By the close of the 2023/24 campaign, Hutchinson had amassed a mightily impressive ten goals and six assists for his new outfit in league action, after only being handed two senior opportunities back in West London.

He has also acclimatised to the Premier League well, with this stunner back in November helping his team clinch a share of the points against Manchester United.

Therefore, Chukwuemeka – who lined up alongside Hutchinson at youth level for Chelsea – could feel more appreciated at Ipswich if a move got off the ground, having been restricted to zero appearances this season in the top-flight.

Looking at the table above, he could explode into life being given more regular minutes at Portman Road with 48 senior appearances under his belt already at Chelsea and ex-employers Aston Villa, with a promising goal and assist count of three next to his name.

After all, whilst he was succeeding in the youth set-up at England with six goals picked up from 13 U19 caps, football talent scout Jacek Kulig would even label Chukwuemeka as a “superstar in the making”, with his development potentially being stunted at Chelsea now.

Capable of playing in a more traditional central capacity, or further forward as a number ten, McKenna would love to call Chukwuemeka his next signing during this chaotic window, with the 21-year-old offering the likes of Enciso and Conor Chaplin competition in that latter position, whilst further offering something fresh away from the more defensive faces of Sam Morsy and Jens Cajuste.

Ipswich could find it difficult to tempt the in-demand youngster to make the switch, but Chukwuemeka might well need a confidence boost after a testing season with the Blues to date like Hutchinson was gifted when relocating.

McKenna must ditch Ipswich promotion hero who earns more than Hutchinson

This Ipswich Town midfielder could soon be heading for the exit door.

-A vontade do jogador é permanecer.

West Indies tour of Pakistan in 2023 likely to be postponed

ESPNcricinfo understands both boards are happy to reschedule it for 2024, freeing the players up for franchise cricket

Pakistan’s home series against West Indies early next year is likely to be postponed until the following season. The two sides were to play a three-match T20I series in January but ESPNcricinfo understands both boards are happy to reschedule it for 2024.The resulting space in the calendar potentially allows players from both sides to become available for the various T20 leagues during that period. The ILT20 in the UAE, the SA20 in South Africa, the BBL in Australia and the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) are all taking place in that month.West Indies have already visited Pakistan twice in the last 10 months, albeit because the Covid-19 pandemic split one white-ball series in December 2021 into two. The two sides played three T20Is that month, before a Covid outbreak in the West Indies camp meant the subsequent ODIs had to be postponed to June this year. They played the ODIs in Multan, as part of the 2023 World Cup Super League. This series of three T20Is was penciled in between New Zealand’s visit to Pakistan in the winter of 2022-23 and the Pakistan Super League next year. The three games will most likely be added to West Indies’ visit in February 2024 when they are due to play three Tests as part of the World Test Championship.Various West Indian players have already been signed up to take part in the BBL, SA20 and ILT20. Pakistan’s players did not feature in the SA20 auction because of a combination of – at the time – their international home schedule but also suspicions that they would not find a place in a league in which all six franchises are owned by IPL teams. No Pakistani players have been given NOCs for the ILT20 either. The beneficiary could be the BPL which emerges as a destination for some of them in that newly opened window.
