Ipswich Town have now made an approach to sign a “monstrous” Premier League midfielder ahead of the transfer deadline, according to reporter Alex Crook.

Ipswich’s 2-1 home defeat against Southampton at the weekend underlined the need to bring in some new additions before the transfer window closes, if they are to stand any chance of avoiding being relegated back to the Championship.

Wolverhampton Wanderers’ 2-0 victory against Aston Villa leaves the Tractor Boys three points from safety, having lost their last four games on the spin, and they are now urgently working on bringing in some new options.

A £2m deal has been agreed to sign West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Alex Palmer, who is now travelling to complete his medical before signing a contract, but Kieran McKenna is also keen to strengthen in a number of other areas.

The report states Ipswich could also add a midfielder and striker to their ranks before the window closes, but only if they find suitable options, and they have now set their sights on a Premier League player to strengthen in the middle of the park.

According to talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook, the Tractor Boys have made an approach to sign Southampton’s Flynn Downes, who didn’t feature in the match at Portman Road at the weekend, with Ivan Juric hinting at a fallout.

However, the Saints have knocked back the approach from their relegation rivals, meaning McKenna may now have to move on to other midfield targets.

Downes could be a solid signing for Ipswich

Although the initial approach has been knocked back, there is still plenty of time for twists and turns before the transfer deadline, so it is not out of the question that Downes makes a return to Portman Road, having previously made 99 appearances for Ipswich.

There are signs the 26-year-old could be a solid signing, too, having received high praise from former manager Russell Martin during his time in the Championship last season: “Flynn has been monstrous. Physically he is a beast and he has so much composure on the ball. His teammates really appreciate the role that he has because it’s so tough being that guy.

“He is huge for us. He has really stepped up and been brilliant. He gives the team an edge and keeps the ball ticking over. He has aggression driving the ball forward. The next step for him is to impact games that way.”

The £30k-per-week midfielder has a decent amount of Premier League experience as a result of spells with West Ham United and the Saints, making 39 appearances in the competition, and he ranks in the 95th percentile for his pass-completion rate per 90 over the past year.

At the moment, however, it seems as though Southampton have no interest in potentially strengthening a rival near the bottom end of the Premier League table.

تحدث إمام عاشور، لاعب الفريق الأول لكرة القدم بالنادي الأهلي، عن صعوبة الموسم بعد التتويج ببطولة الدوري المصري الممتاز، أمس، بعد الفوز على فاركو بسداسية نظيفة إثر منافسة طويلة مع بيراميدز.

وقال إمام عاشور، عبر قناة MBC مصر 2: “الحمد لله، كان موسماً صعبًا، مررنا بمراحل كثيرة كانت صعبة، لكننا استطعنا أن نحقق شيئًا هذا الموسم وجلسنا معًا في آخر ست مباريات بعد خسارة بطولة إفريقيا، ولم يُقصّر أي لاعب في شيء”.

وواصل: “اجتمعنا في غرفة الملابس، وتحدثنا مع اللاعبين الكبار في الفريق، وأكدنا أن لدينا بطولة دوري يجب أن نفكر فيها، اللاعبون كانوا رجالاً في تلك المباريات، ولم يكن أمامنا شيئًا سوى الفوز بالدوري وكان الأهم أن نفوز في المباريات الست”.

وأضاف: “لم نشعر في أي وقت أن الدوري بعيد عن الأهلي، عماد النحاس كان إضافة كبيرة لنا، وكان دائمًا في ظهر اللاعبين، وكان من المهم أن يكون اللاعبون قريبين من بعضهم البعض، عماد النحاس، وشوقي، ومحمد يوسف، ونجيب تعبوا معنا وكانوا إضافة قوية للفريق”.

وتابع: “أهم شيء بالنسبة لي هو حب الناس، لأنني أتعامل معهم بشكل جيد سواء داخل الملعب أو خارجه، من أول يوم دخلت فيه النادي الأهلي، جميع اللاعبين وقفوا بجانبي وكانوا يريدون مساعدتي”.

وكشف عن كواليس حديث مع محمد الشناوي قائلاً: “دائمًا ما يقول لي محمد الشناوي (عايزك تكون الغزالة رايقة وتركّز في الملعب)”.

واستطرد: “كانوا يسألونني أمس: ما هو أفضل هدف لك؟ فقلت لهم هدفي في مرمى فاركو، لأن اللاعبين كانوا يريدون مني أن أُحرز هدفًا وأصبح هدّاف الدوري، وكنت مذهولاً بسبب موقف زملائي معي ولم أر ذلك من قبل”.

وأردف: “كان عمر كمال يقول لي دائمًا (طول ما أنت موجود في الملعب، قل (صلّ على النبي) وستُحرز هدفًا) وشعرت بخوف زملائي عليّ، ورغبتهم في أن أُسجل، حتى أن وسام أبو علي طلب مني أثناء المباراة أن أتقدم للعب في مركز المهاجم لكي أتمكن من التسجيل”.

واسترسل: “هذا الموسم بذلنا جميعًا جهدًا كبيرًا، الفريق بالكامل تعب، وأنا سعيد بذلك، وهذا الحب من جماهير الأهلي شيء جميل جدًا، والوصول إليه بهذه السرعة أمر ليس سهلًا، منذ انضمامي إلى النادي الأهلي وحتى الآن، مهما تحدثت عنهم، فلن أستطيع أن أوفيهم حقهم، لقد وقفوا بجانبي في مواقف كثيرة”.

وحول تواجد أشرف بن شرقي في الأهلي، قال: “كانت هناك مكالمة بيني وبينه، ولم يُخبرني خلالها بانضمامه إلى النادي الأهلي منذ رحيله عن الزمالك، والتواصل بيننا مستمر، قلت له (أنت ستنضم إلى الأهلي؟) فرد قائلًا: لا زالت هناك بعض الأمور، ثم فوجئت بانضمامه رسميًا”.

Glasgow Rangers haven’t enjoyed much success in the transfer market in recent years. Philippe Clement does appear to be adopting a new strategy which has seen the Light Blues focus on younger players. Players with huge potential that can be sold for significant profits down the line.

This has worked wonders for Celtic, who have nurtured players like Matt O’Riley, Jota, and Kieran Tierney over the previous few years, before selling them for major fees, which has enabled the club to rinse and repeat the same strategy.

The Ibrox side have the likes of Nico Raskin, Mohamed Diomande, and Connor Barron, who are all aged 23 or under and yet to hit the peak years of their career. Developing this trio over the next couple of years will see the Gers rake in millions, no doubt about that.

Clement does have a rather special talent in his squad who could go on to be the next big sale at Ibrox, following in the footsteps of Calvin Bassey and Nathan Patterson.

Hamza Igamane’s meteoric rise from an unknown striker last summer to the club’s main man eight months later has been remarkable.

When Clement spent £1.7m to sign Igamane last summer from Moroccan side AS FAR, it appeared as though this was a decent chunk of his transfer budget wasted on a player who wouldn’t be ready for first team football.

Indeed, suspicions were proved correct when the 22-year-old missed the first few weeks of the season, as Clement went on to say:

“Hamza is doing parts of the training now with the group, so step by step he’s going to the physical level that we need in the training and later on in the games. He’s showing a lot of interesting things with the ball, what we saw in the images that we saw from him in the games in Morocco.”

He finally made his debut against Celtic in September and has since gone from strength to strength at the Light Blues.

Across 30 matches, Igamane has scored 13 goals while registering seven assists in all competitions as he has begun to prove his worth to Clement, most notably in the Europa League.

Indeed, the youngster has found the back of the net four times in just six European games so far this season, including a brace against Nice and a goal against Tottenham Hotspur.

Igamane scores once every 91 minutes in Europe’s second tier competition, while he also averages 1.2 key passes and succeeds with 1.7 dribbles per game.

He hasn’t been bad domestically either. A hat-trick against Hibs at the start of 2025 was one highlight, being able to handle the physical nature of Scottish football rather well.

These performances have seen his market value rise and if he maintains his form, it will only continue to soar.

At the time of writing, Igamane is currently valued at €2.5m (£2m) according to Transfermarkt. While it isn’t much of an increase on his initial £1.7m transfer fee, every goal he scores could go towards boosting his valuation.

It shows that he is heading in the right direction and that there is a chance that he will eventually be at a point where the Gers could cash in on him for a profit.

Clement sold a few players last summer to raise funds for future signings, which included Igamane. However, one of these players is now currently worth more than the Moroccan centre-forward, despite being sold for peanuts.

Todd Cantwell was certainly a player who divided opinion at Rangers during his 18 months in Glasgow.

On his day, there was arguably no one better in the Premiership. But the Ibrox faithful didn’t see this side of the Englishman too often.

It was clear that Clement didn’t really see Cantwell as a key member of his side going forward, and his future was questioned throughout the summer transfer window.

On deadline day, the former Norwich City starlet joined Blackburn Rovers for a fee of just £500k as Clement was keen on getting the midfielder off the wage bill.

He has since enjoyed his time back in the Championship, impressive for Rovers in the second division of English football.

The Englishman has played 27 times for Blackburn this season, scoring twice while grabbing three assists.

Lauded as a ”god-given” talent by his former youth coach, Gary Cockaday, Cantwell averages 1.1 shots per game in the Championship, while he also has created nine big chances, averages 1.7 key passes and succeeds with 56% of his dribble attempts.

It has been a productive return to the second tier for the former Gers star, and it appears as though this is a division where he manages to play his best football.

Indeed, when compared to his positional peers in the Championship, Cantwell ranks in the top 9% for progressive passes (5.05) and in the top 14% for shot-creating actions (4.1) per 90, showcasing his attacking abilities.

This has seen his market value rise, despite only joining Blackburn last summer.

According to Transfermarkt, Cantwell is now valued at €3.5m (£3m) due to his impressive displays down south.

Considering they paid just £500k for the player, the club could make a decent profit should they decide to cash in on him in the near future, and it proves that the Light Blues were perhaps too hasty in moving him on.

This value is £1m more than what Igamane is currently worth, which again, shows why it was a mistake in getting rid of the attacking midfielder when they did, as he is already worth more than the Moroccan ace and significantly more than the fee they raked in for his services.

Of course, Cantwell wasn’t perfect, and he had his flaws on the pitch. But when the Englishman was in full flow, he could terrorise defences up and down the country like no one else.

It appears as though he has rediscovered his mojo since making the move back down to England and, hopefully, this reignites a career that once saw him linked with a £40m move to Aston Villa just four years ago.

Eddie Howe has already led the club to the League Cup final, but could he and the Magpies take a giant step towards making the final of the FA Cup for the first time since 1999 today?

The midweek defeat to Liverpool will still be ringing in his ears, especially as his side delivered a poor performance at Anfield.

With Alexander Isak missing the tie due to injury, Howe was forced to unleash Callum Wilson in the starting XI for the first time in over nine months.

Callum Wilson's struggles this season

Wilson had featured on just eight occasions for the club this season before the defeat in midweek, scoring a single goal.

He lasted 69 minutes at Anfield, failing to register a single shot on target during his spell on the pitch, while attempting zero dribbles, missed one big chance and made zero key passes.

He was isolated up front, completing only eight passes during the game while taking just 17 touches of the ball. Of course, it will take him a while to build up proper match sharpness, but this display against the champions in waiting was a poor one indeed.

With the chance to secure progress in the FA Cup this weekend, Howe could turn to the player who starred for the Magpies during the last round: William Osula.

The player who could replace WIlson at Newcastle

Osula joined the Magpies last summer from Sheffield United for a transfer fee in the region of £15m.

It was evident that Osula’s signing was one for the future, and he had scored three goals for the Blades during the 2023/24 campaign.

At the time of writing, the 21-year-old has made only 15 appearances for Newcastle, but his most telling contribution came against Birmingham City in the previous round of the cup.

It was a classic cup tie between established Premier League heavyweights and lower-league opposition. While the game was won by the Toon, Birmingham gave them an almighty scare.

Osula notched two assists on the night while playing on the right flank. The youngster attempted four dribbles during the match, succeeding with three, while making three key passes, creating two big chances and winning 12 ground duels.

It was a sublime display from the former Sheffield United man, and one that should give Howe plenty of reasons to unleash him today. Upon arrival at St James’ Park, his move was praised by Scoutedftbl on X, who said:

“Newcastle spending £15 million on William Osula is a prime example of clubs valuing profile and potential more than anything: he’s not done much in senior football, but he’s big, fast, direct, and 21 years old. Coaches like that, and sporting directors love it.”

He could be the difference against the Seagulls, especially with Isak potentially missing from the starting XI again for the crucial cup match.
