Knight implores administrators to invest in women's internationals to counter franchise threat

England captain hints chance to play “less cricket for more money” could undermine international game

Heather Knight has implored cricket’s administrators to invest in women’s international cricket to ensure it remains “the pinnacle of the game” against the backdrop of several franchise leagues launching in 2023.The inaugural seasons of the Women’s IPL and the PCB’s Women’s T20 League will both be held in March, after the conclusion of the T20 World Cup in South Africa, joining the Hundred, WBBL, Fairbreak Invitational and Women’s CPL as major short-form leagues providing opportunities for overseas players.Knight’s England side have spent this month on a low-key tour to the Caribbean and are looking to clinch a 5-0 T20I sweep in Barbados on Thursday night, having previously won the ODI series 3-0.Related

The tour has played out in front of small crowds with limited media interest and broadcast coverage reliant on CWI’s live stream. Knight said that investment is required in order to ensure that the international game retains primacy over franchise tournaments.”It’s all about money, isn’t it? It’s so important to keep the international game really strong,” Knight said. “There’s obviously a lot of changes on the horizon with franchise competitions: IPL, PSL, lots of those kicking off. It’s really important that international cricket is looked after and it’s strong in all countries and it’s still the pinnacle of the game, which it obviously still is.”But you see the changes that are happening in the men’s game and actually, I think the changes in the women’s game could affect things more if people decide to go down the franchise route and play less cricket for more money, potentially.”I think international cricket needs to be looked after and it might affect the women’s game more with the difference in professionalism around the world and the difference in some teams in the depth, because of the differences in domestic leagues and things like that. It’s been a little reminder, I think, that international cricket really needs to be looked after and invested in.”Alice Capsey faces a race to be fit for the T20 World Cup•CWI Media

Teams have not had access to a third umpire or the Decision Review System throughout Caribbean the tour, which Knight described as “almost like going back in time”. She said: “You just become used to it and you take it for granted that you have those things – like in domestic competitions back home. But ultimately, it’s all about money, isn’t it? And money available to put into those resources.”It has felt like a weirdly low-key tour… no media out here, not a huge amount of coverage. It’s felt like we’ve been able to go about our business. Obviously with the [T20] World Cup coming up, it’s going to be very different and we’ll be very much in the spotlight. It’s been a bit of a strange one.”Knight provided an encouraging update on Alice Capsey’s fitness, suggesting that she remains in contention for England’s World Cup squad despite leaving the tour early after suffering a broken collarbone in the first ODI. “We’re still hoping Alice will be fit for the World Cup, but it’s going to be quite tight,” she said. She also hailed the “new and fresh” atmosphere since Jon Lewis’ appointment as head coach, though conceded that West Indies had struggled to compete. “We haven’t massively been challenged, which is a shame, but I think we’ve done a lot of things really well and a lot of boxes that we wanted ticking have been ticked.”The West Indies have put us under pressure in the last couple of games. In terms of growing as a side, you always want to be under pressure and win those tight games because it sharpens you up, but when we haven’t had that, we’ve tried to create a few things where we put ourselves under pressure and have tried a few different things.”[But] winning is great: you get so much confidence and momentum from winning so that’s really important. I think we’ve done as much as we can this trip, and then we’ll have a few games pre the World Cup to fine tune things and get super-ready come that first game.”

Aston Villa handed Marcus Rashford update as Man Utd hatch transfer plan

An Aston Villa update has surfaced on the possibility of Marcus Rashford joining Unai Emery beyond this campaign, with Manchester United hatching an intriguing plan for the £300,000-per-week winger.

Marcus Rashford earns Aston Villa praise after promising start

After falling down the pecking order at Old Trafford, with Ruben Amorim even criticising Rashford’s commitment, the big-name Englishman has so far displayed flashes of his best form since joining the club on loan in January.

Aston Villa now very keen on summer move for £41m "beast" to replace Duran

Unai Emery has his eye on a new striker.

ByDominic Lund Feb 20, 2025

Rashford made his debut for Villa in a centre-forward role in the FA Cup against Tottenham, and impressed after coming off the bench during Villa’s 1-1 draw with Ipswich in the Premier League. The 27-year-old was then handed his first start in their 2-2 draw against Liverpool earlier this week, standing out as their best performer on the night by virtue of his average match rating, according to WhoScored.

While he is yet to register his first goal or assist under Emery, his direct and exciting displays indicate that it is only a matter of time.

“Marcus Rashford and Asensio, we watched their skill and how they helped us and will help us again in the next months in the different competitions we will face,” said Emery on Rashford.

“We are in a new way after the changes we did. We are demanding because we still need to improve due to some tactical issues and how we want to compete in the Premier League.”

Meanwhile, his teammate Morgan Rogers has also explained what a joy it is to have Rashford at Villa.

“It pushes us along, we want to take what we can from the experienced players in the squad,” said Rogers on Rashford.

“It’s massive to have people like that in the building, and hopefully we can just push each other. The second goal was important, we played well, but we hadn’t killed the game off.”

Aston Villa handed update on Marcus Rashford signing permanently

Villa have a £40m option-to-buy Rashford at the end of his loan deal, but according to reporter Jacque Talbot, the prospects of NSWE triggering it are slim amid United’s own summer transfer plans.

Marcus Rashford

It is thought that Villa’s financial issues mean there is uncertainty surrounding Rashford’s long-term future, and as things stand, it is more likely that he returns to Manchester.

That is because United are hatching their own transfer plan for the forward, with Talbot claiming Amorim’s side are planning to use Rashford as a makeweight in potential swap deal talks to sign Bayern Munich midfielder Aleksandar Pavlović.

Villa take on Chelsea today in the Premier League, and it is likely that Emery will utilise the attacker at some point as he looks to get the very best out of his new arrival during his brief stay in Birmingham.

ANÁLISE: Merentiel teve estreia 'tímida' e López deu sinais promissores no Palmeiras

Tottenham plotting approach for £42m star wanted by Real Madrid and Bayern

Tottenham Hotspur are planning to make an approach for a Real Madrid and Bayern Munich transfer target “soon”, with Ange Postecoglou’s side becoming more and more keen on bringing the player to north London.

Tottenham targeting new midfielder for Ange Postecoglou

Spurs are believed to be targeting a new midfielder as one of their main summer priorities ahead of the 2025/2026 campaign.

£35m Premier League forward wants to join Tottenham after talks

Journalist Pete O’Rourke has even reported recently that Tottenham are ready to make a marquee midfield signing for that area of the squad, despite the club holding talks with Rodrigo Bentancur over a new contract (The Daily Mail).

The Lilywhites have appeared light in midfield at points across 2024/2025, with Archie Gray forced into a makeshift centre-back role for extended periods of the season, while it is also believed that an exit for Yves Bissouma is gaining more traction.

Tottenham are continuing to be linked with Inter Milan star Davide Frattesi as one midfield target, with Lille midfielder Angel Gomes subject to interest from Spurs as his contract ticks down towards expiry.

Postecoglou’s midfield could look quite different by the time next season kicks off, and it will be interesting to see who could be complementing Bentancur in the engine room.

“In terms of his contract situation that is handled by other people and obviously a lot of our strategizing is not just about the short term but the longer term,” said Postecoglou on Bentancur’s potential new deal.

“Rodri, this latter period, is getting back to the levels he wants to be. He was coming off a long term injury last year, came back looked really good and then got another injury. It’s really disruptive. Even this year he got off to a false start with his long suspension.

“You can see he just needs regular game time and he is getting up to speed. Really good guy around the group as well. He is experienced now. From our perspective, in this run-in he is going to be really important.”

Tottenham plotting approach for Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara

According to CaughtOffside, Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara has also been identified by Spurs as a potential serious option.

Lamine Camara for AS Monaco.

Previous reports indicated that Tottenham have been displaying an interest in Camara, but it now appears they’re stepping it up, amid interest from Real and Bayern Munich.

CaughtOffside state Tottenham are plotting an approach to sign Camara “soon”, with Liverpool also believed to be fans of the Senegalese who has really impressed for Monaco in Ligue 1 this season.

The 21-year-old has registered their joint-highest amount of assists in the French top flight (6), and is currently their fourth-best performer by average match rating. That is according to WhoScored, who also state that Camara has averaged an impressive 2.4 tackles per 90 this season – more than any Tottenham player except Destiny Udogie.

Camara is a real all-rounder both defensively and going forward, but he won’t come cheap, with Monaco setting his price tag at up to £42 million.

Accuracy and pin-point yorkers on world champion Titas Sadhu's mind

The Under-19 world champion is one of the young Indians who could attract a lot of interest during the WPL auction

Titas Sadhu is strong and fast, already a world champion, getting better, and one of the young Indian players to keep an eye on at the Women’s Premier League (WPL) auction. On January 29, she returned 2 for 6 and bagged the Player-of-the Match award at the Under-19 World Cup final as India beat England with some ease. After coming home, she has gone back to training, trying to become more accurate and remove niggles like bowling full-tosses when attempting a yorker.”We sometimes see fast bowlers trying to bowl yorkers but end up bowling full-tosses. That’s one of the things we are working on now,” Titas’ father and primary coach Ranadeep Sadhu tells ESPNcricinfo. “At the same time, we are trying to get more control and accuracy in her bowling. She is also working on her batting.”Ranadeep comes from a sporting background and was an athlete in his younger days. He also runs a cricket academy in his hometown of Chinsurah, around 50 kilometres from Kolkata. Titas was a sprinter and swimmer when she was younger – she is still only 18 – but became more interested in cricket after starting to train at the academy, slowly spending more and more time trying to perfect her game. And then came the usual, big question: studies or cricket? In her case, the matter was complicated, because she was a good student. It reached a stage where the family considered moving out of India and making a home in a place where she could focus on both equally.Related

“She was quite good at academics – she got 93% in her school-leaving exams,” Ranadeep says. “But she couldn’t continue because of her cricket. Her mother and I once thought we could settle somewhere else, where she could play for a local team and not lose touch with her studies. But she said, ‘If I am to play cricket, it has to be for India; if I can’t play for India, what’s the point of playing?’ That aside, it wasn’t easy for us to leave everything and relocate anyway.”Fortunately for Indian cricket, that didn’t happen. She became a cricketer, and in 2023, the ICC hosted the first Under-19 World Cup for women, where Titas was a star. With a little help from her father.”Before the final, when she called me, I told her just one thing: ‘You have reached the final, now your work is over’,” Ranadeep recalls. “She was a little surprised and asked me what I meant. I said, ‘Getting to the final is the main thing, don’t think about what will happen in the final; it doesn’t matter if you win the final or not, you have already made us proud. Now just go out and do what you have trained for all these years’.”Now, there’s the WPL auction, where, with 60 spots available for Indian cricketers, Titas could well be in demand.”You play for your country and, in tournaments like these, you play for your franchise. The player’s skill level is key in both,” Ranadeep says. “But at the WPL, she will be able to play alongside cricketers from other countries and learn from them. That’s what I really want for Titas. I want her to be part of a good team, a balanced team, where she can show everyone what she can do.

£62m striker eyeing move to Arsenal as Berta plots "record-breaking" summer

Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta is reportedly prepared to splash the cash this summer, with the 53-year-old plotting to reinforce the squad in numerous areas, including at centre-forward.

Andrea Berta arrives at Arsenal to replace Edu Gaspar

The ex-Atletico Madrid transfer chief, who was at the Wanda Metropolitano for 12 years before leaving La Liga in January, has arrived at Arsenal to replace former Gunners sporting director Edu Gaspar, following his departure in November.

Arsenal open talks to sign £50m player with Berta expected to launch bid

The new Gunners sporting director already has targets in place.

ByEmilio Galantini Mar 12, 2025

Berta orchestrated a host of high-profile Atlético deals during his time at the club, including moves for the likes of João Félix, Diego Costa and Álvaro Morata, while also selling Antoine Griezmann for £108 million before bringing him back three years later for just £17 million.

GiveMeSport reported recently that RB Leipzig starlet Benjamin Sesko, Newcastle United star Alexander Isak, Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams and Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi are all on Berta’s radar heading into the summer, while other reports claim the official has an interest in Bruno Guimaraes (Eduardo Burgos).

There are even suggestions that Arsenal have already initiated some talks over signing Bournemouth defender Dean Huijsen, while Berta has expressed his desire to strike a potential summer deal for Wolves forward Matheus Cunha.

It could be a very intriguing summer at Arsenal following their brand-new appointment, and it will certainly be a crucial one after their serious failure to mount a successful Premier League title challenge this season.

Benjamin Sesko eyeing Arsenal move as Berta set for "record-breaking" summer

GiveMeSport have another update on this, and they write that Berta could be set for a “record-breaking” summer spend which could even reach £300 million.

Arsenal want to reinforce the squad by signing a new second-choice keeper, full-back, midfielder, left-winger and striker. They could even look to bring in an alternative to Bukayo Saka on the right-hand side as well, and Berta has already identified a host of targets.

One of them is RB Leipzig starlet Benjamin Sesko, who is on course to better his 2023/2024 campaign after scoring 17 goals in all competitions already this season.

RB Leipzig's BenjaminSeskoscores their first goal from the penalty spot

Previous reports have claimed that Sesko is tempted to join Arteta this summer, and GMS reiterate that the 21-year-old, dubbed a “machine” last year, does have one eye on a move to the Emirates Stadium.

Indeed, they claim Sesko maintains an interest in joining Arsenal, and if Berta has his way, the Slovenia international could be one of many fresh faces making their way to the English capital at the end of this season.

Sky Sports also claim that the striker’s current release clause stands at £62 million, but this could shoot up to above £66 million, depending on whether certain conditions are met.
