Everton have made it back-to-back wins in the Premier League, and David Moyes must be delighted with the way his team have responded after a disappointing defeat to Leeds United on the opening day of the term.

The Scotsman steered the Toffees away from relegation danger last term and is now focused on challenging for a place in the top half of the division, having strengthened well across the summer.

But, with merely hours remaining until the transfer window slams shut, The Friedkin Group appear willing to seal one final signing to ensure Moyes has everything he needs for the term ahead.

As per The Times’ Paul Joyce, Everton are pushing to sign Merlin Rohl from Freiburg in the Bundesliga, with BBC Sport corroborating the reports and revealing a bid worth £20m is anticipated to get the deal done.

The 23-year-old has suffered his share of injury problems over the past couple of years, but wouldn’t be expected to start every week from the off.

And given that he boasts the athletic profile to succeed in the Premier League and indeed in Moyes’ industrious system, it might be worth TFG pushing ahead quickly and wrapping it up.

What Rohl would bring to Everton

Everton don’t look like they are going to sign Soucek before this evening’s deadline, but in Rohl, they might land not just an alternative but an upgrade on the Czech Republic international.

He’s featured 60 times for Freiburg since joining from fellow German outfit Ingolstadt, and has built up some healthy experience in the Bundesliga, playing 48 times all told in the top flight.

Injuries stifled Rohl’s progress last season, but he showcased some intriguing qualities the year before, and given that he is still in the early stage of his professional career, he might be a far more prudent purchase for the Merseysiders than Soucek.

The West Ham star might be more refined, but Rohl fits the profile Moyes often covets, and he could fashion him into a winner.

The 6 foot 3 German also ranks among the top 9% of midfielders across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for aerial battles won per 90, as per FBref, which further underscores how Moyes could fashion into his version of Soucek, a superior version.

He doesn’t boast the same goalscoring ability as Soucek, for sure, but Rohl has the makings of an attacking gem from the centre, with former Freiburg manager Christian Streich hailing him as a “difference-maker” with a wealth of “dangerous” qualities.

Soucek played a role of great importance when bringing silverware to Moyes’ West Ham project in 2023, but he’s now 30, and an up-and-comer such as Rohl could prove the right move for Everton.

He bears similar physical properties to the Czech man, and maybe a touch more flair and skill besides. Given the strength in depth at the Hill Dickinson Stadium already after the summer exodus, there’s no reason why Rohl couldn’t prove a jackpot signing for Moyes.

England quick suffers another injury setback after Champions Trophy exertions

Mark Wood will miss four months of cricket following an operation on his left knee, effectively ruling the fast bowler out of England’s Test series against India this summer, while keeping him in the hunt for the Ashes this winter.The 35-year old underwent surgery on Wednesday morning in London after scans confirmed medial ligament damage, which came to the fore during England’s Champions Trophy group stage defeat to Afghanistan in Lahore at the end of last month.Wood was forced to leave the field after pulling up midway through his fourth over after experiencing “locking” in his knee. He returned 38 minutes later but could only bowl four of his remaining six before leaving the field for good. The Durham quick’s left knee was heavily strapped throughout the tournament, as it had been since the start of 2024.The timeframe for Wood’s recovery means it is highly unlikely he features in the five-match series against India, which begins at Headingley on June 20. A seamless rehabilitation could see him available for the final Test at the Kia Oval (starting July 31), with Durham’s County Championship fixture against Somerset (July 22) a potential return to competitive action. That round begins a day before the fourth Test at Emirates Old Trafford.At this juncture, the ECB believe Wood will be fully fit to tour Australia this winter. وقالت الرابطة في بيان رسمي اليوم الجمعة: “سينظم اللاعبون احتجاجًا رمزيًا لتسليط الضوء على غياب الشفافية والحوار والتماسك في رابطة الدوري الإسباني بشأن إمكانية إقامة مباراة بالدوري في الولايات المتحدة”.

Neste ano, na 12ª rodada do Campeonato Paulista, contra o Botafogo-SP, e contra o Puerto Cabello, pela Copa Sul-Americana, o Tricolor foi a campo com 13 jogadores lesionados. O menor número de lesionados foi na segunda rodada do Paulistão, contra a Ferroviária, com quatro.

A última vez que o São Paulo teve menos de 8 desfalques por lesão foi na 5ª rodada do Paulistão, quando não contou com 7 atletas lesionados diante do Corinthians. Desde então, o Tricolor sempre teve oito ou mais jogadores lesionados. Em 10 ocasiões durante o ano, o Tricolor não contou com pelo menos 11 jogadores devido a lesões, ou seja, ficou sem ‘um time inteiro’ devido a problemas físicos.

Mas a Data Fifa foi positiva para o time. Durante a semana, houve várias evoluções. Embora Michel Araujo tenha se juntado à lista de lesionados, devido a um estiramento na panturrilha, Jandrei se recuperou da fratura na mão e outros atletas começaram o processo de transição física.

No caso, Welington e Talles Costa estão nesse processo. Moreira também está passando por esse período de transição. Os três, inclusive, participaram de parte do treinamento desta segunda-feira (19) juntamente com o restante do elenco. Igor Vinícius já havia iniciado sua transição em abril, enquanto Erison está se dedicando ao aprimoramento de sua forma física.

Desta forma, além de Michel Araujo, os únicos lesionados ‘de verdade’ são Giuliano Galoppo e Nahuel Ferraresi, que estão em processo de recuperação de cirurgia. Mesmo que o São Paulo talvez não conte com os jogadores que estão em transição já para esta quarta-feira (21), e nem com casos especiais como Pablo Maia (suspenso) e Arboleda (convocado), o número de desfalques devido a lesões mais graves será um dos menores do ano. Se considerarmos as últimas duas temporadas, a situação também segue a mesma premissa.

Se as lesões foram uma grande dor de cabeça para Rogério Ceni, com Dorival Júnior a situação parece estar mais controlada. Vale destacar que, sob o comando de Dorival, nenhum jogador precisou passar por cirurgia devido a lesões.

تلقى نادي الزمالك إخطارًا رسميًا من الاتحاد الإفريقي لكرة القدم (كاف) يفيد بتعديل موعد مباراة الفريق الأبيض أمام ديكاداها الصومالي في ذهاب دور الـ32 من بطولة كأس الكونفدرالية الإفريقية، المقرر إقامتها مساء اليوم السبت على استاد القاهرة الدولي.

وبحسب الخطاب الرسمي الوارد من (لكاف)، فقد تقرر تأجيل انطلاق المباراة لمدة ساعة واحدة، لتُقام في الساعة السابعة مساءً بدلًا من السادسة، وذلك بناءً على طلب النادي الصومالي بالتنسيق مع الزمالك، مراعاة لحقوق البث الفضائي والتنسيق الإعلامي الخاص بالمواجهة.

وأبلغ الاتحاد الإفريقي الناديين رسميًا بالموعد الجديد، مع التأكيد على الترتيبات التنظيمية السابقة دون أي تعديل آخر في الملعب أو شروط اللقاء.

ومن المقرر أن تُقام مباراة الإياب بين الفريقين يوم الجمعة المُقبل في السادسة مساءً على استاد السلام بالقاهرة، حيث يسعى الزمالك إلى تحقيق نتيجة إيجابية في لقاء الذهاب تضعه في موقف مريح قبل موقعة الحسم.

Manchester United were swept aside by their neighbours in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

There’s no sugarcoating it: Ruben Amorim has some serious issues to overcome, and the whispers of yet another managerial change at Old Trafford are getting louder.

The Etihad Stadium is a tough ground for any club across the globe, and United have a good record on their rivals’ patch, but the manner of the 3-0 defeat to keep Amorim shackled to the lower levels of the Premier League has increased the pressure and then some. Chelsea, you will need no reminder, travel to the Theatre next weekend.

Benjamin Sesko blanked, but the blame cannot be placed solely upon the new striker, devoid of service and limited to seven touches. Sofascore record the Slovenian’s heat map to actually be rather deep, evidence of struggles within a barren final third.

But INEOS spent big on the 23-year-old goalscorer this summer, and the fact that thus far Amorim is failing to get a tune out of him and indeed the wider United system is hugely concerning.

Amorim doubled down post-match on his plan to maintain the tactical set-up which has proved such a troubling talking point over the turbulent duration of the Portuguese’s reign.

While Sesko was completely anonymous against Pep Guardiola’s outfit, he was indeed starved of support. Hemmed in United were not, but they were inefficient on the counter and struggled for purchase in the final third.

This was a tough maiden starting berth in the Premier League for a young and talented striker, one who opted for Old Trafford in spite of the vested interests of Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United last month.

Sesko wasn’t blameless. The former RB Leipzig man made a couple of heavy touches and should have made more of his chance against Gigi Donnarumma, chipping tamely toward the debutant goalkeeper.

Bought over from Germany for a £74m fee this summer to replace Rasmus Hojlund, there are perhaps concerns from some on the red side of Manchester that INEOS have just repeated the same mistake.

But it’s early days yet. And, in fact, there was another starting star on Sunday who might actually be shaping into Amorim’s next version of the Denmark centre-forward, who joined Napoli on loan before the transfer deadline several weeks back.

Without a doubt, Hojlund fell by the wayside at Manchester United. It was only two years ago that Erik ten Hag welcomed the young forward to England, signing him from Atalanta on a £72m deal.

The 22-year-old’s first term was solid if unspectacular, but he fell to a new low last year, ridiculed for his anonymity at number nine, scoring just four Premier League goals all season.

Sesko will be directly tied to his predecessor all year long, but it’s actually Patrick Dorgu who might be shaping into the new Hojlund.

Dorgu, 20, has been spun into a wing-back role in Amorim’s 3-5-2-1 formation, and it’s not working. For one, his crosses leave plenty to be desired, and he is proving ineffective despite operating within the exact tactical parameters Amorim demands of him.

To put that another way, the Danish wideman might not be the solution, which is rather damning given Amorim championed the £25m signing of the Lecce talent last January to help define the system he so firmly stresses will shape United for the duration of his tenure.

It wasn’t all bad in the derby; Dorgu was right in the thick of the action, but his crossing was woeful, and the Manchester Evening News branded him with a 4/10 match rating.

According to data platform Sofascore, Dorgu won 11 duels, created three key passes and won four tackles against Man City, but this wasn’t enough to disguise a pitiful attempt to inject creativity into Amorim’s ranks, with analyst Dharnish Iqbal remarking that he “hasn’t provided the crosses” despite being funnelled the ball with regularity.

Dorgu, let’s be clear, is a talented young player with the potential to succeed in the Premier League. Hojlund was the same, both arriving from Italian shores. But he seems to have taken on a talismanic role in Amorim’s system that he is unfit for, and so the Portuguese tactician falls ever closer toward the exit.

Given the seeming importance of Dorgu’s role – much like Hojlund’s limp displays last season came to the direct detriment of United’s wider system – it’s rather concerning that he doesn’t appear fit for the role, only completing one of five attempted dribbles against the Citizens as a further underscoring of that argument.

Sesko will often be scapegoated; this is the life of a forward. However, he’s a tall striker and won three aerial battles against City. Even so, Dorgu struggled to provide accurate crosses having been played into space, and that is an issue.

Hojlund, similarly, suffered more criticism than most last term, but he didn’t miss that many big chances, and United were culpable of a dried well of support toward the young man.

Dorgu has already shown this season an aptitude for the attacking side of the game, but so too has he proven himself unworthy of a nailed-on starting berth, and that is exactly what Amorim has entrusted him with, with this being the Dane’s third full 90 of the Premier League campaign already.

Might Amorim need to make an alteration? Wing-backs are instrumental in the manager’s machine working at full capacity, and so his reliance on Dorgu is understandable.

But it doesn’t appear to be working well enough, and if that is the case, and Amorim is unwilling to change, as has been his own declaration, then where do the Red Devils go from here?

Gerrard now a serious option to replace Martin

In an unexpected turn of events, it could be out with the new and in with the old at Ibrox. According to TeamTalk, Steven Gerrard is now a serious option to replace Martin now that he is free from previous contractual issues from his time at Al-Ettifaq.

The emergence of the former Rangers boss comes after the news that Jose Mourinho is set to return to Benfica, rather than remain a candidate to join the Gers. The so-called ‘Special One’ was considered an option, but Rangers’ ability to reach his wage demands have often been questioned whenever those rumours have emerged.

So, the attention has gone back towards Gerrard. The 45-year-old remains the last Rangers manager to win a Scottish Premiership title, sealing victory in 2020/21, but will have some making up to do after ditching the club for Aston Villa midway through the campaign that followed.

That said, if the 49ers are looking for someone who knows how to transform Rangers into winners, then Gerrard is arguably their man ahead of the likes of Sean Dyche and Danny Rohl.
