Ingram, Hassan lead Glamorgan rearguard as stalemate beckons

Visitors forced to follow on but reach close unscathed in second innings

Gloucestershire paceman Zaman Akhter produced an incisive bowling performance to ask questions of Glamorgan on day three of the Rothesay County Championship Second Division match at Bristol’s Seat Unique Stadium.Colin Ingram top-scored with 103 and Chris Cooke contributed 56 in a rearguard action for the Welsh county, but Akhter’s return of 5 for 85 from 20.5 overs and 3 for 61 from fellow quick Ajeet Singh Dale ensured Glamorgan were dismissed for 385, a first-innings deficit of 161.With the possibility of a first red-ball win in Bristol since September 2022 before them, Gloucestershire enforced the follow-on, only to then be frustrated by openers Zain-ul-Hassan and Eddie Byron, who scored 51 not out and 47 not out respectively to usher Glamorgan to the close on 106 without loss. The visitors trail by 55 runs, their chances of saving the game on the final day vastly improved.Still 400 runs behind and needing a further 250 to avoid the follow on at the start of the day, Glamorgan were intent upon survival. But Gloucestershire’s bowlers were afforded encouragement by partial cloud cover and Singh Dale was rewarded for bowling a fuller length when Kiran Carlson failed to move his feet, edged a routine catch to Cameron Bancroft at second slip and departed for 22 in the seventh over of the morning with the score on 169. Gloucestershire tails were up and Ingram was fortunate to survive on 33 when attempting to pull Taylor and seeing the ball drop just short of Graeme van Buuren at mid-on.Change bowlers Akhter and Tom Price were unable to exert the same degree of pressure and, as conditions eased and the sun came out, so new batsman Ben Kellaway and Ingram began to find runs easier to come by. After an hour and 10 minutes, Gloucestershire skipper Bancroft had seen enough and called upon off spinner Ollie Price. It came as something of a surprise, both to onlookers and the batsman himself, when Kellaway became stuck in his crease and was bowled by an Akhter yorker that knocked off stump out of the ground. Kellaway had made 22 and Glamorgan were perhaps feeling a little anxious as Cooke joined Ingram with the score on 205-5. Ingram responded by hoisting Ollie Price over long-on for six to raise an 86-ball 50 in the grand manner, after which the Welsh county secured a first batting bonus point.Glamorgan were 251-5 at lunch, Ingram unbeaten on 62 and Cooke 21 not out.The new ball represented Gloucestershire’s only realistic chance of forcing a result on a characteristically flat Bristol pitch, but Ingram and Cooke looked increasingly assured as they extended their alliance to three figures from 169 deliveries amid a flurry of boundaries. Ingram went to his hundred via 170 balls, reaching that landmark with his 13th four, a back-foot drive behind point off Singh Dale. Cooke reached a 99-ball 50 in the next over, driving Akhter through the covers for his eighth boundary.Gloucestershire desperately needed a breakthrough and Akhter provided it, encouraging a ball to nip back at Cooke and hit off and middle. Cooke had made 56 and played his part in a hugely important stand of 129 for the sixth wicket with Ingram. When Singh Dale bowled Ingram on the back foot for 103 and Akhter had Timm van der Gugten held at first slip by Ollie Price for four, three wickets had fallen in 12 balls and Glamorgan were back under intense pressure at 337 for 8, still 60 runs short of avoiding the follow-on.The ninth wicket pair of Ned Leonard and Shoaib Bashir successfully negotiated eight overs as Glamorgan reached the sanctuary of the tea interval on 363-8, still 183 runs behind. Relying on pace following the resumption, Gloucestershire quickly terminated tail-end resistance, Akther clean bowling Leonard for 16 and then repeating the feat in his next over to remove Asitha Fernando for six, leaving Bashir high and dry on 22 not out.Glamorgan made a better fist of batting second time around, openers Byron and Hassan demonstrating admirable concentration to defy tiring bowlers for 31 overs and greatly improve Welsh prospects of salvaging a draw on the final day. Hassan went to a patient 50 from 102 balls with 6 fours, while Byron finished just three runs short of the same landmark.

Not Isak: Liverpool star is their own version of Arsenal icon Thierry Henry

Had Liverpool found another stoppage-time goal at the weekend, they would have beaten Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park and extended their flawless streak in the Premier League, six wins from six, 18 points from 18.

But Arne Slot’s side cannot subsist on a diet of last-gasp joy across the span of the campaign, and they got a taste of their own medicine as Eddie Nketiah struck late to condemn the Reds to their first defeat of the year.

In some ways, Liverpool’s never-quit attitude has papered over a few cracks in Slot’s squad across the early weeks of the 2025/26 season, with tactical imbalances clear after a summer of significant spending and upheaval.

Florian Wirtz, for example, has flattered to deceive since his £116m move from Bayer Leverkusen, but FSG are calm and confident, retaining full belief that the German playmaker, 22, will come good.

Liverpool have also added two of the most exciting strikers in the business to their ranks. Indeed, in Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak, the Merseysiders have goalscoring options capable of firing the club toward more illustrious success after last year’s Premier League triumph.

Isak & Ekitike are Liverpool's future

Isak might be the record-breaking man, but the events of the summer transfer window have meant that the former Newcastle United striker has integrated late at Liverpool.

Ekitike, ostensibly the 26-year-old’s understudy, has started his Liverpool career with lightning speed, scoring five goals and registering one assist across eight matches, six of which were starts.

Much has been made of how Slot can appease the pair, who will both want to start regularly across the campaign, but he has hinted that they could play alongside against each other, and given the many shoots of Liverpool’s season, having a wealth of attacking options is hardly a bad thing.

One thing’s clear, FSG have landed a pair of elite attackers, with both having been likened to a former Premier League great in Thierry Henry.

TNT Sports pundit Owen Hargreaves acknowledged in August that there is a likeness between Ekitike and his retired countryman, who also shifted between left-flanked and central striking berths.

And Isak has long been tagged as a similar sort of player to the Arsenal legend, with former footballer Nedum Onuoha saying the marksman is “vibes of Thierry Henry”, BBC pundit Alan Shearer also calling him “the complete striker”.

Two fantastic forwards, but Liverpool actually already had their own version of Henry, and they still do at that.

Liverpool's own version of Thierry Henry

Mohamed Salah started off poorly in the Premier League, arriving at Chelsea from Basel as a young and unpolished prospect with a clear quality on the ball and impressive athleticism besides. He didn’t manage to pull it all together, though, and left for Italy to forge his path.

And forge his path he has. The 33-year-old made an impression in the Serie A and joined Klopp’s Liverpool for £34m, now recognised globally as one of the greatest players of his generation, the poster boy of this illustrious modern era at Anfield and hailed as a “superstar” by Sky Sports’ Gary Neville.

With 188 goals scored in the Premier League, Salah is fourth in the all-time standings and looking to rise higher still. Last season, he put to bed any doubts that he is a divisional great, scoring 29 goals and supplying 18 assists as the Reds sealed their first Premier League title since 2019/20.

Time was last season when Salah almost appeared a shoo-in for the Ballon d’Or, so impressive was his start to the term. But he petered out across the second half of the campaign and was anonymous as Liverpool were knocked out of the Champions League by eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain.

In this way, the iconic forward shares with Henry a certain grievance over having been snubbed for the award, coming in at fourth during last week’s ceremony in Paris, with the one-time Les Bleus star missing out to Pavel Nedvěd in 2003 despite an extraordinary campaign with the Gunners, scoring 32 goals and supplying 24 assists across all competitions in 2002/03.

Inarguably two of the greatest players in English football history, both could make a compelling case for the crown.

For Salah, he will have brushed off any frustration over being snubbed, having, after all, been the talisman in Liverpool’s Premier League title triumph.

But it must still sting, and with Henry and the Egyptian being ranked against each other so many times, this is seemingly something they will share when Salah eventually joins the Frenchman in retirement.

Set to soon pass the torch, the veteran will no doubt feel that the 2024/25 campaign marked his best chance to win the Ballon d’Or. It wasn’t to be, with the Egyptian no doubt frustrated that he didn’t even reach the podium after what will go down as one of the greatest season-long efforts in English history.

Salah might be approaching the final stretch of his legendary Premier League career without a Ballon d’Or title to his name, but he will still go down as an all-timer, having played an instrumental role in putting Liverpool back on their perch over the past eight-and-a-half years.

Likewise, Henry never got his mitts on the pinnacle individual accolade, but fans of the two persuasions will be sure to agree that both were good enough to have claimed the prize.

Not Isak or Ekitike: Liverpool struck gold on star worth more than Salah

This unsung Liverpool hero continues to prove a fantastic signing for the club.

Charli Knott ties Somerset down as Sophie Luff threatens lift-off

Overseas star makes decisive contribution as Hampshire claim 31-run victory on DLS

ESPNcricinfo staff13-May-2025

Hampshire batters Maia Bouchier and Charli Knott made important contributions to the victory•Hampshire County Cricket Club

Hampshire 213 (Knott 64, Southby 46) beat Somerset 182 (Luff 74, Adams 3-36) by 31 runs (DLS)Overseas star Charli Knott undermined Somerset with bat and ball as Hampshire won an absorbing Metro Bank women’s One-Day Cup contest by 31 runs on the Duckworth/Lewis/Stern Method at the Cooper Associates Ground in Taunton. The Australian all-rounder top-scored with 64 from 102 balls and staged stands of 46, 40 and 42 with Maia Bouchier, Georgia Adams and Rhianna Southby for the second, third and fourth wickets respectively after Hampshire had won the toss. Southby contributed a useful 46 from 64 balls and Bouchier made 39 as the visitors were dismissed for 213 in 50 overs, Alex Griffiths taking 2 for 24 and weighing in with a catch and two run-outs.Knott then took 2 for 25 with her offbreaks as Somerset were reduced to 109 for 8 inside 33 overs. Skipper Sophie Luff threatened a remarkable fightback, scoring a defiant 74 and sharing in a stand of 69 for the ninth wicket with Ellie Anderson to briefly put the outcome in doubt, but Adams removed her to finish with 3 for 36 as the home side were dismissed for 182 in 46 overs. Hampshire’s spinners took eight wickets between them as the visitors extended their lead over The Blaze at the top of the table to five points. No doubt with a point to prove following a below-par performance against Surrey last time out, Somerset produced a disciplined performance with the ball on a worn pitch to successfully restrict their opponents on this occasion. Anderson bowled Ella McCaughan with new ball and Mollie Robbins hit her straps at the other end as Hampshire’s top-order batters struggled to find the boundary in a 10-over powerplay that saw them post 44 for 1.Spin is undoubtedly Somerset’s strong suite and pace off proved effective in frustrating the visitors during the middle overs, Bouchier chipping a delivery from Amanda-Jade Wellington to Griffiths at short mid-wicket and departing for a 43-ball 39 with the score on 69 just as she was threatening to cut loose.Having played second fiddle in a partnership of 46 with Bouchier, Knott took centre stage, grafting her way to 50 via 79 balls in the face of accurate spin bowling from Wellington and Charlie Dean as Hampshire reached 107 for 2 at the halfway stage. With the game finely balanced, Somerset enjoyed a moment of outrageous good fortune, the stooping Griffiths deflecting a straight drive from Knott onto the stumps to run out the unfortunate Adams for 14.Change spinners Chloe Skelton and Heather Knight continued to build pressure and Knott, frustrated by a lack of progress, skied the former to Luff at mid-on to afford Somerset a crucial breakthrough. The Australian had registered her highest score of the summer, but with her went Hampshire’s best chance of posting a truly challenging total. From a position of strength at 151 for 3 in the 37th over, the visitors fell away badly, their last seven wickets falling for the addition of just 62 runs.Abi Norgrove was run out for 11, Skelton produced sharp turn to bowl Nancy Harman for six, Lynsey Smith was held by Anderson at mid-wicket off the bowling of Griffiths and Southby, having moved to within four runs of a half century, lost her off stump to Dean as Somerset turned the screw. Griffiths then removed Freya Davies and Bex Tyson was run out off the final ball to reinforce the feeling that the visitors had fallen short. But that all changed when Somerset’s inability to construct substantial partnerships was laid bare. Eager to impress against former team-mates, Davies bowled Emma Corney for 15 with the score on 24 and Somerset’s chase was further undermined when Knight, having made 23 and advanced the total to 51, dabbed a ball from Tyson to point, set off in pursuit of a notional single and was comprehensively run out by Bouchier’s pick up and throw as she attempted to return to the crease.Desperately in need of a partnership to calm their nerves, the home side plunged ever deeper into trouble, Smith inducing the experienced Fran Wilson to hit tamely to Bouchier at cover point in the sixteenth. Attempting to break the shackles, Dean then pulled a short delivery from Tyson straight down the throat of Daisy Gibb at deep backward square as Somerset lurched to 63 for 4.Having forced their opponents onto the back foot, Hampshire’s spinners then kept up the pressure by bowling a disciplined line, in the process pushing the required rate up to nearly six an over. Introduced at the Marcus Trescothick Pavilion end, Knott struck in her first over, pinning Katie Jones lbw for nine as the slide continued unchecked. There appeared to be no coming back from the wreckage of 80 for 5 at the halfway stage of the innings and it was 87 for 6 when Griffiths offered Adams a straightforward return catch. Knott had fellow Australian Wellington caught at deep mid-wicket via a leading edge before rain forced the players off with the score on 10 for 7.When play resumed, Somerset required a further 112 to win and had one over fewer in which to chase an unchanged target. Adams had Skelton held at silly mid-on immediately following the resumption, but there was hope for Somerset while the indomitable Luff continued to offer stiff resistance. Somerset’s captain went to a dogged 50 from 83 balls and finally found a reliable ally in the form of Anderson, who scored at nearly a run a ball as the ninth wicket alliance realised 50 from 54 balls to make Hampshire think again. The stand was worth 69 and Somerset were within 36 runs of pulling off an astonishing against-the-odds victory when Tyson persuaded Anderson to hit straight to mid-wicket, Bouchier taking her third catch of the innings to reduce the home side to 178 for 9 in the 45th over. Hampshire breathed a collective sigh of relief when Adams ended Luff’s 108-ball innings in the next over.

Man Utd preparing aggressive pitch to land "brilliant" star worth more than £86m

Manchester United are keen to add more talent under Ruben Amorim and could now look to make a move that would make the world sit up and take notice of developments at Old Trafford.

Man Utd look to strike tactical balance under Ruben Amorim

Undoubtedly, Amorim’s decision to stick with his complex 3-4-3 formation has drawn his fair share of admirers and critics. However, the Portuguese boss doesn’t appear likely to change that any time soon.

Per Pundit Arena, Emile Heskey has claimed that regardless of their tactical set-up, a lack of leaders in the Old Trafford dressing room is a reason behind their inconsistent form this season.

He stated: “Nothing seems to go right for Ruben Amorim. Everyone keeps talking about the tactics, but when you put 11 players on the pitch, they’ve got to fight. Where’s your leaders? I remember playing at Liverpool, I was only 22 at the time, we had Gary McAllister and he would be on to us. Steven Gerrard was younger than me, he would be on to us, Sami Hyypia, too.

“It doesn’t look like Man Utd have any leaders on the pitch, who are really digging people out.”

Now, that may be a little harsh. Bruno Fernandes and Harry Maguire are two shining examples of leadership, but ultimately, the best form of authority in football comes from players who do their talking with the ball at their feet.

Man Utd have a "£100m + footballer" who's becoming their new McTominay

Man Utd will not want to repeat the mistake they made with McTominay

2 ByJoe Nuttall Oct 13, 2025

Bringing new talent with the potential to be world-class is what will take Manchester United closer to their glory days. Nevertheless, that is easier said than done, all things considered.

However, they may now be plotting a seismic move to sign a proven international who is becoming one of Europe’s best attacking forces due to his excellent displays.

Man Utd ready to go big for Kenan Yildiz

According to reports in Europe via Stretty News, Manchester United are planning to launch an offensive for Juventus star Kenan Yildiz, someone who was previously of interest to the club during the summer window.

Regardless, it would take a fee well over the region of £86 million to entice him to Old Trafford, with the Serie A giants keen to retain the 24-cap Turkish international at all costs.

Labelled “brilliant” by Massimiliano Allegri, Yildiz has registered two goals and four assists in eight appearances for Juventus this term across all competitions, proving his worth as the Old Lady aim to push for the league title.

Furthermore, the Regensburg-born winger has already created 17 chances and delivered eight successful crosses in Serie A, per Fotmob, illustrating his ability to carve open defences.

With Manchester United pushing hard for his signature, it remains to be seen whether they can come to an agreement with Juventus on a structure for a potential deal and whether he would be open to moving to Old Trafford.

Unfettered England hunt down 197 in style to seal 2-0 series lead

Six-laden display from West Indies not enough to stay in the series, as Banton, Bethell star in chase

England 199 for 6 (Buttler 47, Brook 34, Banton 30*) beat West Indies 196 for 6 (Hope 49, Charles 47, Wood 2-25) by four wicketsHarry Brook had said at the toss that he “fancied a chase” in the second T20I in Bristol. Well, he was handed one all right, as West Indies obliged in trademark style, serving up a six-laden display of power-hitting that included five in a single 31-run over from Adil Rashid – the second-most expensive in England’s T20 history – and 75 runs off the final four overs of their innings.Despite 15 blows over the ropes in total, and a stiff target of 197, even that was not nearly enough to rein in a newly liberated England batting line-up that responded with a salvo of cameos to hunt down their target with nine balls to spare.Fresh from his matchwinning 96 on Friday, Jos Buttler was once again the top-scorer, with 47 from 36, while Brook led as he would wish to be followed with 34 from 20. However, the star turns came from the young guns Jacob Bethell and Tom Banton in the middle order, whose combined haul of 56 from 21 balls drove England to an unassailable 2-0 series lead with Tuesday’s final match in Southampton still to come.Wood brings the wheelsIn a match marked by such formidable hitting, however, it was a bowler in his first international appearance since September 2023 who made the ultimate difference. Brook had wanted a “point of difference”, he said, in confirming Luke Wood’s recall. His left-arm pace is an attractive option at the best of times, but with a strong cross-wind cutting across the County Ground, the conditions were tailor-made for his inswinger to the right-hander.So Evin Lewis discovered with an Exocet of a first delivery – full, fast, tailing in at the toe, and extracting an immediate verdict from umpire Martin Saggers, even as Wood charged down the pitch in full celebrappeal mode. His follow-up to Shai Hope wasn’t quite as intended – a wild full-toss as the yorker slipped out – but two overs for four runs in the powerplay kept West Indies very much under wraps.Brydon Carse’s introduction gave a more accurate reflection of the carnage to come, however. With England once again opting for just two frontline quicks, Carse’s more conventional angles were very much to Hope’s liking – with two fours and three sixes, each of them creamed over long-off as he opened his stance to take advantage of the short straight boundaries.Jason Holder slammed an unbeaten 29 off nine balls, including three of five sixes off one Adil Rashid over•Getty Images

Hope and Charles fail to kick onEngland’s plethora of spin options were rolled out after the powerplay, as Hope’s early momentum was stalled. Johnson Charles, who had hitherto been the silent partner in their second-wicket stand, took a few early lumps out of Bethell and Rashid, whom he slammed over midwicket for six, through the grasp of a leaping Wood on the boundary’s edge.In the same over, however, Rashid followed up with a ripper – a dipping, fizzing legbreak to Hope, that turned sharply past the edge for Buttler to complete the stumping as West Indies’ captain toppled out of his crease for 49 from 37 balls. At 90 for 2 in the 11th, Sherfane Rutherford was pushed up the order in a bid to pick up the tempo. But Will Jacks – a decent match-up to the left-hander – cramped his style with a series of offbreaks across his body, before Bethell sent him on his way for 6 from 8, as Banton hoovered up a slog to long-on.Charles connected for a third six, off Rashid, but 15 dot-balls out of 38 told a tale of an innings without fluency. Carse returned with a change of ends to make amends for his profligate opening gambit, but it was Wood who prised him out – second ball of his second spell – via a deflection onto middle stump as he followed the batter outside off.Power surge to finish West Indies’ extraordinary depth of power-hitters means that someone is bound to come good in the end … or several people, as it turned out. Rovman Powell was briefly the man as he brought Friday’s hero, Liam Dawson, down to earth with 20 off his final over, and he had blatted his next ball, from Carse, over deep midwicket for another six before Wood clung onto an excellent tumbling take on the cover boundary. But, with Brook trusting his senior man Rashid to bowl the 19th over, Jason Holder and Romario Shepherd turned on the afterburners, amid scenes of certain carnage that were reminiscent of that infamous final over in Kolkata in 2016. Rashid was smoked for five sixes out of six – the exception being a scuffed single to backward square from Holder off the fourth ball, to mock boos from an enthusiastic contingent of West Indies’ fans.Wood restored a degree of decorum – and capped an excellent comeback with figures of 2 for 25 – as Shepherd was run out for 19 off 11, but Roston Chase smacked his first and only ball down the ground for six, the 15th of the innings, as West Indies finished on a healthy 196 for 6 that included 75 from the final four overs. Brook had got his chase.Buttler, Duckett start with poiseWith ten an over needed from the outset, Jamie Smith didn’t hang around, twice slogging Holder through the line and holing out to the second attempt for 4. But his second-over departure meant the in-form Buttler had all the longer to marshal the chase, and in Holder’s next over, he signalled his poise with an imperious driven six over long-on.Ben Duckett, however, was the impish source of early impetus, with his array of sweeps and dinks including a scoop over the keeper for six. He had a life on 11, when Lewis couldn’t cling on at point, but – after setting up the chase in a 58-run powerplay – Duckett miscued a pull off Shepherd and was spectacularly grabbed by a leaping Powell at wide long-on for 30 off 18.Buttler took up the cudgels, including an audacious reverse-hoick for six off Gudakesh Motie’s second delivery. But, on 43 from 29, he had a reprieve in the midst of a pacy over from Alzarri Joseph, in which he was tempted to take on the short straight boundaries and instead miscued a short ball to deep midwicket. Charles, however, couldn’t settle under the swirling ball, and the moment was lost.Banton and Bethell apply the late flourishWith the run-rate nudging above 11, it was Brook’s turn to come to the party in a 20-run over off Shepherd that included an extraordinary cut for six off a fast, straight full toss, as well as a misfield from Charles that earned him further stick from an invested Bristol crowd. But, just when it seemed the worm was turning in England’s favour, Buttler reversed his hands on a sweep off Akeal Hosein – fresh off the plane at 7.30am after his visa issues – and that man Charles was on hand at deep third to send him on his way for 47.Brook greeted the offspin of Chase with an open-shouldered launch down the ground, but two balls later, he picked out Powell for an easier grab in the deep. At 126 for 4, the innings was in danger of slipping away.Banton, however, slog-swept his first ball for six to lay down a marker, and though Motie’s next over started tightly, Banton showed his versatility with a reverse for four and a muscular straight six to keep the chase right on track. Bethell immediately got the memo with three more startling blows over the ropes in Joseph’s next over – his fast hands belying his apparently slight frame. He ruined his cameo by dinking the final ball straight to Chase at short third, but his 26 from 10 balls had broken the requirement into tiny pieces. Jacks picked out cover for 7 but by then Joseph had already wrecked any hope of a fightback with five wild wides down the leg-side. Banton and Carse duly closed out the chase to make it five wins in five for the Brook regime.
