Crystal Palace: Fans react to Jeremie Boga update

Crystal Palace target Jeremie Boga has refused to make the move to Selhurst Park, according to journalist Sebastien Denis.

And, as to be expected, a number of Palace supporters have been reacting to the news on social media.

Recent reports suggested that Palace could attempt to sign Boga after initiating contact with Sassuolo.

However, according to Denis, the left-winger has refused to make the move to London and will remain with the Serie A side.

Patrick Vieira looks set to make at least one deadline day addition, though, with Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard completing a medical ahead of a £14m move.

They don’t seem to have had that kind of progression with Boga, however, so Edouard could well be the club’s sixth and final addition of the summer window.

Everton must unleash Ellis Simms

This season is going to be all about progression for Everton and Rafa Benitez.

The Toffees ended a dismal 2020/21 campaign in tenth place and then saw Carlo Ancelotti walk through the Goodison Park exit door.

Therefore, you sense that Everton now need to find a bit of stability after a pretty quiet transfer window.

The Merseyside outfit spent just £1.7m in the market and have barely strengthened their starting XI.

However, Demarai Gray looks an instant hit after scoring two goals already since moving from Germany.

Another area Everton struggled in was selling players. They accepted a loan move for Moise Kean but fringe players like Cenk Tosun, Tom Davies and Jonjoe Kenny are all still at Goodison Park.

Tosun spent a period of last season on loan at Besiktas but ruptured his patella in what was another dismal campaign for the Turkish forward.

It would be a surprise if he gets much football this season either, especially with Dominic Calvert-Lewin such a big threat and in the goals immediately during 2021/22.

On the topic of Everton’s star striker, it’s a player who’s been compared to the England international that should be unleashed instead of Tosun.

That happens to be 20-year-old Ellis Simms, a man who helped Blackpool to promotion from League One last season.

In what was his first consistent taste of senior football, the striker found the net on ten occasions in 24 outings.

It was excellent form as he consequently earned praise from former Toffees goalkeeper Nigel Martyn. He commented: “Ellis Simms, centre forward. Natural goalscorer, still learning his craft, but he doesn’t snatch at chances. As happy scoring in the 90th minute, when you could snatch at it, for one so young – he’s a pretty cool finisher.

Martyn added: “He has all the attributes, he’s 6 foot 1, he’s got the attributes of a Calvert-Lewin, for instance.”

Simms has scored goals right throughout his youth career, rattling the back of the net on a regular basis.

He bagged 41 in 44 for the club’s U18 side before notching 17 in 36 for the U23s. The youngster began to replicate that with Blackpool but obviously, the Premier League is a colossal step up.

Though, with Tosun’s career fading in Merseyside, Simms is surely more deserving of some match action.

Crystal Palace: Fans slam Jordan Ayew

Plenty of Crystal Palace fans hit out at Jordan Ayew for his performance in the 1-1 draw with Brighton on Monday evening.

The Eagles conceded deep into stoppage time to their rivals after Wilfried Zaha’s first-half penalty looked to have sealed all three points for Patrick Vieira’s side.

Vieira made two changes from the side that lost to Liverpool, with Odsonne Edouard and Luka Milivojevic coming in for Christian Benteke and Cheikhou Kouyate.

That meant Ayew kept his place in the side on the right-wing, with the 30-year-old starting five of Palace’s six league fixtures this season.

However, he struggled to impress at Selhurst Park, with Joel Ward the only player to record a lower Sofa Score match rating for Palace.

The French forward lost 70% of his duels, failed to complete a successful dribble and missed a big chance to double the lead late on. [Sofa Score]

Palace fans react

This is what these Palace fans had to say on social media regarding Ayew’s display, with one labelling him as ‘useless’.

Pundit says Harvey Elliott will get chances at Liverpool

Paul Stewart believes that Harvey Elliott could be developed in a similar way to Phil Foden was at Manchester City.

The 18-year-old has made just nine senior appearances for Liverpool but has impressed massively during pre-season and is expected to get his opportunities under Jurgen Klopp.

Elliott, who exceeded expectations during an outstanding loan spell at Blackburn last season, lined up alongside Sadio Mane, Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah in the Reds’ friendly against Athletic Bilbao on Sunday which could suggest that the teenager could be handed his full league debut at Norwich this weekend.

But Elliott only turned 18 in April and is one of the most inexperienced players in the league, with most of his chances likely to come in Europe and the domestic cups, like Foden.

The Manchester City man, who’s three years Elliott’s senior, had two years where he was restricted to mainly appearances off the bench and outings in the cups before he became a regular part of Pep Guardiola’s side.

And Stewart exclusively told Football FanCast that he expects similar treatment for Elliott:

“It’s difficult when you’re trying to replace such a notorious front-three, and what I mean by that is when you’re a young lad, it’s quite a bit of weight on your shoulders.

“But I think Jurgen is astute enough to give game-time as Pep did with Phil Foden, nurture him and see where it takes him.

“I think it’s a little too soon to expect too much out of him, but I see him being a player for Liverpool for a long time.”

West Ham hold Barkley talks

According to a report by 90min, West Ham have held ‘conversations’ with Chelsea over signing attacking midfielder Ross Barkley – with manager David Moyes now personally keen if the club don’t seal a deal for Jesse Lingard.

The Lowdown: West Ham want attacking midfield man…

Claret & Hugh outlined Lingard as West Ham’s priority target for this summer window but the Manchester United player is looking more and more likely to stay at Old Trafford this summer.

This has lead to the club targeting other players as they look to bolster Moyes’ attacking midfield options, with West Bromwich Albion star Matheus Pereira also heavily linked as an alternative.

Now, 90min claim another player is on West Ham’s radar for that position.

The Latest: West Ham hold ‘conversations’ over signing Barkley…

As per the outlet, West Ham are still keen on Lingard, but have held ‘conversations’ with Chelsea over signing Barkley.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-news/” title=”West Ham news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Moyes is thought to be interested in reuniting with his former player at the London Stadium and the 27-year-old has also been told he can find a new club this summer.

Barkley spent the 2020/2021 season on loan at Aston Villa and impressed in spells, with the Hammers boss remaining a ‘big fan’.

It is also said that the former Everton ace may ‘jump at the chance’ to reunite with his ex-manager.

The Verdict: Good option?

Going by statistics, the £100,000-per-week midfielder, valued at around £18 million by Transfermarkt, actually doesn’t appear to be a bad option in the grand scheme of things.

According to WhoScored, he averaged 1.6 key passes per 90 in the final third over 18 Premier League starts for Villa last term – more than Lingard managed during his loan spell with the Hammers (WhoScored).

He also competed more dribbles in that time (1.2) than the Red Devils ace (1.1), not to mention Chelsea would apparently be ‘prepared to sanction’ a loan deal for Barkley.

The only warning sign could be his major dip in form after an impressive start to 2020/2021 under Villans boss Dean Smith, with the playmaker drawing some criticism thereafter (Birmingham Live).

Could Moyes give his former prodigy another fresh start at the London Stadium?

Saints urged to sign Winks

Noel Whelan believes Harry Winks could be a fantastic signing for Southampton this summer.

The Lowdown: Winks to be available

It has been reported that new Tottenham boss Nuno Espirito Santo is happy to let Winks leave this summer.

So far, Southampton have made two new signings in Romain Perraud (southamptonfc.com) and Danyl Simeu (chelseafc.com) – Ralph Hasenhuttl will no doubt be eager to add more new faces to his squad before the end of the transfer window.

The Latest: Whelan urges Saints move

Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan believes Winks would be a great signing for Southampton. He said:

I think everybody needs a player like that.

“You can look at Everton, they’ll have the money for a player like that, somebody with that sort of experience. I think most clubs will be fancying him.

“Obviously it’s whether you need a player that badly, where you don’t have that sort of player in your ranks. When you look at Leeds, we’ve got Kalvin Phillips.

“Most teams will have somebody along those kinds of lines. However, there will be teams that go: ‘Ooh, do you know what? We could maybe do with a player like that. Then we can push another player forward into that midfield area.

“I think it’s just important he gets out and starts playing again. Even Southampton, possibly, could do with a player like that.

“They play that good style of football, it’s on the deck it’s quick-paced. That to me would suit Harry Winks down to the ground.”

The Verdict: Worth a punt

Other than the 2019/20 campaign, 25-year-old Winks has never been a regular starter, but the fact both Mauricio Pochettino and Jose Mourinho were happy to have him in and arounds the Spurs squad says a lot about his ability – the former was such a fan, he even compared him to legendary Barcelona pair Xavi and Iniesta (via The Birmingham Mail).

With 173 appearances for Tottenham (Transfermarkt) and 10 caps for England, he is a player with plenty of talent. If Espirito Santo does not want him at the club, it does not make too much sense for him to stay – if the Saints could convince him to move to St. Mary’s Stadium, they would be capturing a top talent.

Sunderland set to sign Broadhead

Sunderland look set to complete a deal to bring Nathan Broadhead to the Stadium of Light.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Football Insider, who claim that the Black Cats have made a breakthrough in talks with Everton regarding a season-long loan deal for the centre-forward, who is scheduled to undergo a medical at Sunderland in the coming days.

The report goes on to state that Rafael Benitez has given the green light regarding the temporary departure of the 23-year-old, after assessing the former Wales U21 international during the Toffees’ pre-season tour of the United States of America.

Johnson will be buzzing

Having lost the services of both Charlie Wyke and Chris Maguire this summer, it was evident that bringing in a fresh face up front was something of a priority for Lee Johnson before the transfer deadline at the end of the month.

And, with it appearing as if the Mackems have completed this task with a couple of weeks of the summer window to spare, the 40-year-old will undoubtedly be buzzing with his transfer team, particularly when considering how much potential Broadhead looks to possess.

Indeed, over his 18 Premier League 2 appearances last season, the £450k-rated centre-forward – who can also operate from the wing – scored an impressive 11 goals and registered three assists, playing a key role in his side finishing in fifth-place in the division.

These performances clearly impressed the former Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti, who awarded Broadhead his Premier League debut in the club’s 0-0 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion in April this year.

Furthermore, the man David Unsworth dubbed “one of the best players” he’s worked with also has experience of playing in League One, having scored two goals and provided two assists over 19 appearances while on loan at Burton Albion back in 2019/20.

As such, it would very much appear that the capture of Broadhead is something of a coup for Sunderland, with the young forward clearly boasting the potential to finally help fire Lee Johnson’s side out of the third tier of English football.

Gers fans rage at Arsenal clash news

Glasgow Rangers fans are far from happy after the Scottish Government confirmed that only 2,000 fans will be allowed into Ibrox to watch the Gers’ pre-season match with Arsenal.

The Gers enjoyed a magnificent term last time out as they won the Premiership for the first time in 10 years without losing a single match in the competition (thefishy.co.uk).

However, the supporters were unable to fully enjoy the triumph and their success as they usually would given stadiums across Scotland were empty due to the coronavirus pandemic.

During Euro 2020, 12,000 fans were allowed into Hampden Park (BBC), but only 2,000 are now allowed to be at Ibrox.

The Gers were far from happy and contacted the government to ask why they couldn’t have more, and they have now received a response, with the regime saying the importance of the Euros meant they allowed more people in (Glasgow Live).

The news was relayed on Twitter by @ibroxrocks, and it attracted plenty of attention from the supporters. They took to the social media platform to share their thoughts, with one fan calling the news ’embarrassing’.

Pundit can see Sergio Ramos to Tottenham happening - Exclusive

Former Premier League striker Dean Windass believes Sergio Ramos joining Tottenham this summer is a possibility.

Ramos, 35, is looking for a new club after leaving Real Madrid and has already been linked with a host of English teams, such as Chelsea and Manchester City.

Both sides have Champions League football to offer, giving them the upper hand over Tottenham, who will not even be in the Europa League this upcoming season after finishing seventh last term and being forced to settle for the Europa Conference League.

Even so, Windass can still imagine the 6 ft 1 Spanish defender, who Glenn Hoddle believes can bring much to a side, at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

“He’d be a great fit for a back three,” the ex-Hull City star exclusively told FFC when asked if Ramos joining Spurs was a possibility.

“I know he’s not a young man anymore, but he’s experienced and he’s still got that little bit of pace. I could see that happening.”

Of course, Ramos is not getting any younger. But on a free transfer for a year or two, he could be brilliant business.

The Spanish centre-half has won everything at both club and international level, including the Champions League on multiple occasions and the World Cup. That winning pedigree is something Spurs could desperately do with.

SAFC eye McCann

As per The Courier, Sunderland are the latest club to register an interest in St. Johnstone midfielder Ali McCann.

The Lowdown: SAFC need midfielders

Sunderland are preparing for the new campaign as they once again target promotion to the Championship.

However, they are in need of new midfielders given Josh Scowen, Grant Leadbitter and Max Power all left the Stadium of Light following the end of the previous term (The Northern Echo).

The Latest: Black Cats eye McCann

Now, it seems Lee Johnson has a midfield target in mind in St. Johnstone man McCann.

They are not the only side interested in his services, though, with Celtic, Hull and Stoke all said to be in pursuit of the 21-year-old. He is said to be valued by his club at £2m.

The Verdict: Top target

Despite only being 21, McCann already has plenty of experience under his belt. He has made 84 appearances for his current outfit, and also appeared 13 times on loan for Stranraer (Transfermarkt). He has also enjoyed a certain amount of success, helping St. Johnstone win both the Scottish Cup and Scottish League Cup last season.

His former midfield partner Jason Holt said McCann was “undroppable” last year (via The Glasgow Times), and he has arguably only improved since then. St. Johnstone will always struggle to hold on to their top performers – if Sunderland can manage to win the battle for McCann, they would be getting their hands on a top talent for the future.
