Bresnan confident of improved England attack

Tim Bresnan is sure England’s attack has plenty of improvement left in it after Sunday’s high-scoring tie with India in Bangalore. Bresnan was the lone star in the England bowling group with 5 for 48, to that point the best figures in this World Cup by a fast bowler, but India still managed to post an enormous 338.England could also benefit from having Stuart Broad back after he was confined to bed over the weekend due to illness, and tweeted about his headaches and upset stomach. A much-improved Broad trained at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Tuesday, although it remains to be seen whether England will rush him back for the Ireland game at the same venue on Wednesday, or allow him to rest until they meet South Africa on Sunday. One of the concerns for England against India was the continued poor form of their main strike bowler, James Anderson, who took 1 for 91, the equal second-most expensive analysis ever by an England player in an ODI. Anderson had also leaked 72 from his ten overs against the Netherlands in Nagpur, but despite his struggles, England have still managed to open the tournament with a win and a tie.”There’s not a lot of margin for error on these wickets,” Bresnan said. “The Holland pitch was a very good wicket and the one the other night was probably the best we’ve ever seen to play on, I mean 330 plays 330, you can’t really argue with that. Jimmy [Anderson] will be disappointed with his performance but he’s a quality bowler and I know he’ll bounce back from that and we’re all backing him to bounce back. That’s where the improvement lies, if we gel as a bowling unit.”Tim Bresnan was the only England bowler to have success in the game against India•Getty Images

Anderson was unlucky in the opening over against India, when he curved the first ball away from Virender Sehwag and Graeme Swann dropped a sharp chance at slip, before two more leading edges nearly went to hand in the same over. But the swing disappeared quickly and it was only Bresnan, with his subtle changes, who looked dangerous later in the innings.”It’s not swinging a great deal up the top and it’s not really moving off the seam, so it’s quite difficult to take wickets without using variations,” he said. “You’ve just got to mix it up as much as you can and try to create pressure and get wickets that way.”You can’t really get away with anything wide of off stump. Even on off stump is still wide to some players. Different players have their different areas and it’s quite difficult to keep it in an area where they can’t score. Especially up top and in the Powerplays, when India took it the other night with the new ball, it skidded on nicely.”A day out from the Ireland clash, the pitch at the Chinnaswamy Stadium looked a little green, but after 676 runs were scored at the ground on Sunday, it’s unlikely there will be much assistance for the bowlers by the time the game starts. But as Bresnan showed, the rewards for hard work are still there.

Hussey expects aggression from Clarke

Michael Hussey expects Michael Clarke to be a positive and aggressive leader in his first outing as Australia’s Test captain on Monday. Clarke gained the post following Ricky Ponting’s withdrawal with a broken finger and will be in charge of a young outfit that has the job of levelling the Ashes series at the SCG.Clarke is the team’s most experienced player with 68 Tests, while Hussey, one of only two men in the squad over 30, has appeared in 10 fewer matches. Hussey said it would be strange walking on to the ground without Ponting, but he is confident Clarke will be a strong replacement.”He’ll be an aggressive captain, always looking to take wickets out there, make changes to the field and with the bowlers,” Hussey said. “He’ll be searching for a wicket all the time, and will always want the game going forward. That’s the way Australians have played our cricket as long as I can remember. I think he’ll be a very positive captain.”Clarke has been successful in the limited-overs arenas and was in charge of Australia’s journey to the final of the World Twenty20 in the West Indies in May. He also has 13 victories in 18 ODIs as leader and has been able to impress his team-mates with his high-energy style.”I guess the challenge is to be able to maintain that over the five days,” Hussey said. “It’s going to be a hard old graft. But we have 100% confidence in him. I think he’s done a really good job when he’s captained the team so far in his career.” This Test assignment is more complicated because it comes at a time when Clarke is struggling for runs, having scored 148 in seven bats against England.England retained the Ashes with their victory in Melbourne last week, and Hussey hopes the Sydney Test will be the start of Australia’s revival. “Our focus is trying to get it back to 2-2 – I think that would be a real morale-boosting win for us,” he said. “We’ve got to get better. We hope our Test team is going to get better over the next 12 months to two years, but the process starts now. Unfortunately, we can’t win the Ashes, but if we can get it back to a two-all series leveller, it will be a good result for us.”Hussey, who is 35, was particularly disappointed after the MCG defeat. “It’s the Ashes and the biggest thing you play for,” he said. “I hope I get another opportunity to have another go at it. But I don’t know if I will, so that is a pretty hard thing to start thinking about.”

Rangers: Weston could be new McCoist

Giovanni van Bronckhorst has given the Glasgow Rangers’ youth players a chance at Ibrox since replacing Steven Gerrard back in November.

In his very first press conference, the Dutchman mentioned that chances would be given to players regardless of age, and so far, he has stuck by that mantra in his six months in charge.

Opportunities have fallen to youth starlets such as Alex Lowry and Charlie McCann, with the two being deployed in the earlier stages of the Scottish Cup to great effect.

Lowry came on for Ianis Hagi against Stirling Albion and made an immediate impact, scoring in front of a raucous Ibrox crowd.

Meanwhile, former Manchester United youngster McCann emerged from the bench in the next round against Annan Athletic and suitably impressed.

This has led many to push for young striker Tony Weston to be given a chance in the first team, especially considering the fact Alfredo Morelos is out for the rest of the season through injury.

Weston signed for Rangers from Blackpool in the summer of 2020 on a three-year contract and has continued to impress ever since – scoring goals aplenty for the B team – 21 in the Scottish Lowland League alone this season – and pushing towards a first-team opportunity.

Rangers youth coach Steven Smith sang his praises earlier on in the season, dubbing him “clinical” following a double against Dalbeattie Star.

These goals have given the striker the perfect platform to impress Van Bronckhorst with the final furlong of the season approaches.

And, considering his impressive goalscoring record for the B team, Rangers could well have the next 355-goal Ally McCoist in their midst, and if Weston was even half the player that Super Ally was, then the Gers have got something special on their hands.

Leeds: Dean Jones backs Dest move

Jesse Marsch should attempt to lure Sergino Dest from Barcelona to Leeds United, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

The lowdown

In the words of ESPN senior writer Tom Hamilton, the 48-year-old has become ‘the most successful American coach in Europe’ and a ‘pioneer’ for his country.

He led Red Bull Salzburg to two league titles and two Austrian cups before earning a move to RB Leipzig, who were Champions League semi-finalists in 2020. The former New York Red Bulls coach is now taking on the Premier League with Leeds, having succeeded Marcelo Bielsa at the end of February.

Leeds are reportedly looking at 21-year-old Dest, with 17 caps for the United States, in addition to compatriot Brenden Aaronson, and the Whites believe that the former would be an ‘excellent addition’.

He is represented by ICM Stellar Sports, whose clients also include Elland Road duo Patrick Bamford and Dan James.

The latest

Jones told GiveMeSport that Leeds face some pretty daunting competition for Dest, who made a ‘dream’ move to Barcelona in 2020, but he thinks that Marsch may be able to exert some pulling power.

The journalist claimed: “Sergino Dest has much bigger clubs interested in him right now. He’s got huge ambition and doesn’t even want to leave Barcelona because it was his dream move.

“But if Jesse Marsch has got any pull over him, then he should give it a go.”

The verdict

Dest started 10 of Barcelona’s first 11 La Liga matches this season, but since Xavi took over in November, the American has only been named in five starting line-ups. Injury problems have played a part, but his place looks considerably less secure than it did under Ronald Koeman.

If Marsch could tempt the £16.2m-rated wide man and Leeds could make an offer to Barcelona’s satisfaction, then there would be cause for celebration at Elland Road.

Dest, who can operate in both full-back positions and as a winger, was Ajax’s Talent of the Year in 2020 and also featured in the IFFHS Under-20 Team of the Year alongside the likes of Alphonso Davies, Erling Haaland, Phil Foden and Ansu Fati, so his potential is huge.

Indeed, Barcelona team-mate Dani Alves declared that ‘he has everything to be one of football’s greats’, so if Marsch does have any sway over possibly enticing the 21-year-old to Leeds, he absolutely must utilise it.

In other news, this Leeds man could leave the club after Marsch spoke to him about his behaviour.

Villa fans react to Julian Alvarez update

Manchester City appear to have won the race for long-term Aston Villa transfer target Julian Alvarez.

That’s according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, and a number of Villa fans have been giving their thoughts to the news on social media.

Villa have been linked with the River Plate attacker since the summer, with the player’s agent Fernando Hidalgo reportedly planning to speak to the Midlands club over a potential move. However, it is Pep Guardiola’s side who look set to announce an €18.5m (£15.43m) transfer for the 21-year-old, who scored 24 goals and registered 18 assists in 2021.

Romano revealed on Tuesday evening that an agreement has been reached with the Premier League champions, and Alvarez will pen a five-year deal at the Etihad Stadium before returning to River Plate on loan until the summer.

Romano: ‘Expect 2-3 signings’ at Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur fans will be excited by Fabrizio Romano’s latest claim as we head into the final few days of the January transfer window…

What’s the word?

The north London outfit are yet to conduct any form of business this month but plenty of incomings and outgoings have been mooted in the press.

It’s the first window of opportunity for manager Antonio Conte to bolster the playing squad since he was appointed as Nuno Santo’s successor back in November.

And despite a lack of confirmed movement, the Italian transfer expert is expecting it to be a busy end to the window for the Lilywhites.

“I expect Tottenham Hotspur to make two or three signings before the end of the window,” he told blogger Matt Hayes on YouTube. He also claimed that Adama Traore remained a key target but the club are not prepared to pay Wolves’ €25m (£20.8m) asking price.

Encouraging news

Time is certainly running out if Spurs are going to bring in anyone, let alone two or three new players, though it’s believed Conte has asked to strengthen three priority positions.

As per football.london, that’s a new wing-back, a new left-sided centre-back and a backup striker but with the likes of Tanguy Ndombele, Giovani Lo Celso and Dele Alli all linked with departures, per Sky Sports,  a central midfielder could quickly become a key area to target.

[snack-amp-story url = “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/tottenham-hotspur-thfc-spurs-transfer-rumours-gossip-conte-paratici-levy-updates” title=”Read the latest Spurs news, transfer updates and much, much more!”]

Aside from Traore, the north Londoners have also been mooted with an exciting move for FC Porto sensation Luis Diaz, who is an out-and-out left winger by trade, and Fiorentina outcast Sofyan Amrabat, who is excelling at the Africa Cup of Nations in midfield for Morocco.

So if there is going to be three additions by Monday night, you’d imagine that the trio of players mentioned above are the most likely candidates to meet Romano’s claim.

Spurs had been unbeaten in the Premier League under Conte until last weekend’s defeat to his former club Chelsea, who have now beaten the Lilywhites three times this month and whilst the side are firmly in the race for the top-four, those losses highlighted a huge gulf in quality on the pitch.

The Italian head coach must be backed financially if he’s to stand a chance at reviving this sinking ship in N17 and three new additions would be a great start ahead of the summer.

We’ll have to wait and see if the Spurs hierarchy can pull anything out of the bag over the coming days but if you’re a Lilywhites supporter, then Romano’s update should leave you very excited.

West Ham: Hammers still in Jesse Lingard hunt

West Ham are still interested in completing the signing of Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Lowdown: Lingard excels at West Ham

The 29-year-old spent half of last season on loan at the London Stadium, becoming a hero in no time and spearheading the Hammers’ European challenge.

Lingard scored nine goals and registered four assists in just 16 Premier League appearances for West Ham, prior to returning to the northwest.

He has again struggled for playing time at Old Trafford this season, however, and the Hammers have been tipped to re-sign him in the near future.

The Latest: Hammers still in the fight

Speaking to Give Me Sport, O’Rourke claimed Lingard remains on David Moyes’ radar, with their interest never going away:

“He has been on West Ham’s list since last summer when he had that great loan spell at the London Stadium last season. He doesn’t figure in Manchester United’s plans going forward.”

Newcastle are now strongly linked with the 32-cap England international, so it appears Rob Newman could have a fight on his hands for his signature in the next ten days.

The Verdict: Newcastle favourites

While it would be great to see Lingard back in east London, it does look increasingly as though he could be part of the Tyneside revolution, following their recent big-money takeover.

The Magpies have made a second loan bid for the England international and their newfound financial power could give them the edge over West Ham, in terms of wages.

Should the player opt for London living and a club currently thriving instead of fighting relegation however, Lingard would be a fantastic addition to Moyes’ squad this month. He has been hailed as ‘exceptional’ by the Hammers boss in the past and showed in his temporary stint last term just how much he can inject into the Irons’ attack.

In other news, some West Ham fans are excited after an update on one target. Find out who it is here.

West Brom: Andy Carroll given big lifeline

Having scored 40 league goals fewer than Championship table-toppers Fulham, West Brom made their move in the early stages of the January transfer window to add some more firepower to their squad with the signing of Daryl Dike.

Unfortunately, the former Orlando City forward was recently and cruelly struck with a muscle injury which will now keep him out of action for a considerable amount of time.

Before the transfer window closed, the Baggies managed to bring in another striker – presumably as a result of Dike’s injury – in the shape of former Reading and Newcastle United marksman Andy Carroll on a free transfer until the end of the season.

The striker joined Reading in November after he left the Magpies, where he was picking up £23k-per-week according to Salary Sport last year, as a free agent in the summer.

During his brief stint with Veljko Paunovic’s side, the striker scored two goals and provide one assist in eight league appearances prior to finding himself out of the squad shortly before joining the Baggies.

Now that the 33-year-old has made his way to The Hawthorns, this will be a great chance for him to not only put his underwhelming time at Reading behind him, but also to potentially achieve something great by getting the Baggies back into the Premier League again.

While his first performance in a West Brom shirt in their recent 2-0 defeat against Millwall may not have been memorable, there is an argument to be made that Carroll didn’t arrive in ideal circumstances, given the Baggies’ dreadful run of form which got former manager Valerien Ismael the sack.

Now that his former Newcastle boss Steve Bruce, under whom the striker played 43 times at St. James’ Park, has entered the frame at West Brom, they will need to work together again to the best of their abilities if Albion are to have any hope of securing promotion by the end of the season.

If Bruce can get a positive tune out of the striker in the coming weeks and months in terms of goals and strong performances, this should give the Baggies a great chance of being in with a shout of promotion, especially since goals are what the team badly needs.
