Lancashire limp on rain-hit day

ScorecardShivnarine Chanderpaul, making his Lancashire debut against his former county, survived a mini collapse today as the visitors reached 136 for 5 before rain ended play at 3pm. The West Indian ended the day on 30 not out after lobbing the final ball just over mid-off when shaping to pull Callum Thorp. After being granted a flying start by the erratic Liam Plunkett, Lancashire slipped from 52 without loss to 59 for 3 after being put in as the change bowlers capitalised on favourable conditions. The ball swung under the overcast skies and there was also life in the pitch, as Mitch Claydon proved when finding the edge of both openers’ bats as they pushed forward.Stephen Moore was first to go, caught behind for 27, and Paul Horton followed for 29 when he edged at shoulder height to Michael Di Venuto at second slip. It was just as well for Durham that Thorp was at his most miserly to counter the profligacy of Plunkett. Thorp had figures of two for 14 from 14.2 overs while Plunkett conceded 45 runs off seven overs. When he last bowled, Plunkett had performed well for England Lions and Durham skipper Phil Mustard gambled by asking him to bowl the first over. With Steve Harmison at the other end, Plunkett conceded all the 11 runs which came off the first four overs and then saw the first ball of the fifth hooked over long leg for six by Moore. The ex-Worcestershire man cut the next ball for four, forcing Mustard to bring on Thorp. His away swing accounted for Mark Chilton, who edged to Dale Benkenstein at third slip, then Paul Collingwood struck with his 10th ball in his first championship appearance for two years. He nipped one back to have Steven Croft lbw for four before Tom Smith put on 36 with Chanderpaul, who survived a sharp chance off Collingwood on 10, when an edge flew low to Di Venuto’s right at second slip.Thorp had the one post-lunch success when extra bounce saw Smith caught behind for 23 when playing defensively on the back foot. Luke Sutton contributed 14 to an unbroken stand of 26 with Chanderpaul.

Grazi, Maiara, Letícia e Jeniffer completaram a goleada.

Newcastle: Downie makes Trippier claim

An update has emerged on Newcastle United’s interest in Atletico Madrid full-back Kieran Trippier…

What’s the talk?

Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie has claimed that PIF are hopeful of completing a deal for the defender and does not think he will be the last of any new additions.

He Tweeted: “Newcastle’s owners are hoping to make Atletico Madrid’s Kieran Trippier their first signing this week. Atletico boss Diego Simeone said today: ‘Nowadays when a player wants to leave, he cannot be retained.’ Trippier set to be the first of potentially 4+ signings this window.”

Excitement

This update will surely leave Newcastle fans feeling excited as they prepare for a month of action off the pitch as well as on it. PIF appear set to splash the cash in the market and Downie’s Tweet brings with it the promise of multiple arrivals to bolster Eddie Howe’s squad, starting with Trippier.

Supporters will be buzzing with this for multiple reasons. Firstly, the signing of the England international could be an excellent one for the club. The Magpies have struggled badly in defence this season and bringing in an experienced top-flight performer could improve their backline.

Norwich are the only side in the division who have conceded as many goals as Newcastle (42) and they have only kept one clean sheet in the league, which came in their 1-0 win over Burnley – their only three points of the campaign so far.

Trippier is coming in after helping Atletico to keep an outstanding 16 clean sheets in 28 La Liga matches last season in Spain. In that time, he averaged a SofaScore rating of 7.29 and registered six assists, showing that he was a crucial part of their success as he produced superb displays week-in-week-out.

Therefore, fans will be buzzing with his potential arrival at St. James’ Park as he could come in and produce those types of performances in black and white in the coming months.

Also, the supporters will be excited by Downie’s claim that he could be one of four or more new signings. They can look forward to plenty of activity in the coming weeks in regards to incomings and that could get fans eagerly awaiting further updates on who they may be seeing play for the club in the second half of the season.

Ireland fight back after Bernard hundred

David Bernard produced a workman-like 102 off 165 balls for Jamaica to leave the hosts in a competitive position at 339 all out, against Ireland in the opening day of their three-day Jamaica Cricket Festival clash at Chedwin Park

Cricinfo staff04-Apr-2010Close Ireland 23 for 1 (Stirling 10*, N O’Brien 11*) trail Jamaica 339 (Bernard 102, Connell 4-77) by 316 with nine wickets remainingDavid Bernard produced a workman-like 102 off 165 balls for Jamaica to leave the hosts in a competitive position against Ireland in the opening day of their three-day Jamaica Cricket Festival clash at Chedwin Park.Bernard struck 10 fours and a six in his knock that lasted 202 minutes while getting support from Tamar Lambert (68) and Danza Hyatt (55) against Peter Connell who bagged 4 for 77 off his 11.5 overs. It was an elegant innings but Bernard was lucky to survive when he was dropped off spinner Paul Stirling when on 34. He punished the tourists, completing his century in just over two hours. Earlier, captain Lambert secured his half century with a measured shot over long off after a patient build-up.Ireland were made to work hard in the field, on a pitch that offered little for the bowling team. The visitors did however experience early success with Brenton Parchment being the first to go for the Jamaicans after he was caught by Trent Johnston on 31 off the bowling of Kevin O’Brien with the score on 56.Donovan Pagon (21) and Hyatt pushed the score to 104 before the former fell to the bowling of Andre Botha; Johnston again providing the safe hands for the catch. The Jamaicans added 11 runs for their next two wickets with Hyatt and Horace Miller (4) falling in quick succession to leave the hosts precariously poised on 115 for 4 shortly after lunch.Lambert and Bernard then steadied the ship with a partnership of 139 for the fifth wicket, but Jamaica collapsed after Lambert’s departure; the batsman playing onto his own stumps, to trigger the slide that saw Jamaica lose their next five wickets for 84 runs.Connell was obviously the pick of the Irish bowlers, but received good support from Stirling who claimed 2-45 and the trio of Kevin O’Brien (1-29), Johnston (1-42) and Gary Kidd (1-44). Ireland will be buoyed by the fact that they managed to bowl out Jamaica and will be looking for an advantage when they resume on one wicket down on the second day.

Cobrança ou apoio? Veja a estratégia do Corinthians contra a má fase

Livramento disappointed in Norwich defeat

Southampton couldn’t continue the good run of form from prior to the recent international break, having won three out of their four previous league games before being beaten 2-1 today by Norwich City.

After taking an early lead with a goal from Che Adams, the Saints didn’t keep that lead for long after Norwich striker Teemu Pukki levelled the scoring just a few minutes later. Grant Hanley scored the winning goal in the second half to give the home side their second win of the season and Dean Smith’s first as their new manager.

One Southampton player who definitely had a day and performance to forget on this occasion was Valentino Livramento.

After recovering from an injury scare which forced him out of international duty, the 19-year-old played the full match at Carrow Road but only won six of his 15 duels, completed just 29 of his 38 passes (with no key passes), completed just one of his three dribbles and lost possession 17 times. He ultimately earned a disappointing overall match rating of 6.4/10, making him the lowest-rated Southampton outfield player to start the match according to SofaScore.

Since joining from fellow Premier League side Chelsea in August in a deal worth a reported £5m, Livramento has played almost every minute of Premier League action for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side, cementing his place as their first-choice right-back.

Given his young age and the fact that the Austrian clearly trusts him to perform every week for the Saints, it would be easy to chalk down this disappointing individual performance against Norwich as a bad day at the office and just hope he can improve next time around.

However, if the youngster doesn’t manage to improve on today’s performance and keeps putting in lacklustre displays, his place in the team could be at risk going forward, especially with Hasenhuttl recently revealing that he will be rotating his side throughout the next few weeks and months to navigate the busy winter schedule.

Everton linked with Denis Zakaria

Everton could seal a bargain deal in either the upcoming January transfer window or next summer after being linked with a move for Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Denis Zakaria.

What’s the story?

According to Sky Sports journalist Angelo Mangiante, the Toffees are one of three Premier League clubs who are interested in securing the 25-year-old’s services, with his contract set to expire at the end of the current campaign.

He tweeted: “Liverpool, West Ham and Everton are interested in Denis #Zakaria, contract expiring in 2022.”

The Goodison Park outfit were forced to limit their spending to just £1.8m during the last window in order to remain within Financial Fair Play’s regulations, so snapping up Zakaria in a cut-price deal or on a free transfer would surely be appealing to the club’s hierarchy.

Rafa Benitez could seal big bargain

After arriving at Borussia-Park from Young Boys back in 2017, the Switzerland international has established himself as one of the dominant engine room operators in the Bundesliga in recent years.

In 141 appearances for Gladbach, Zakaria has scored 11 goals and provided eight assists, but it’s the box-to-box dynamo’s overall performances which have really caught the eye.

One of the most decorated German footballers of all time in Lothar Matthaus is amongst the 25-year-old’s admirers, claiming that the midfielder reminds him of Real Madrid maestro Toni Kroos.

“I’m glad that Gladbach have found another pearl,” revealed Matthaus (as relayed by Planet Football). “At his age, I was earning my first stripes for Borussia. He reminds me of Toni Kroos at that age.”

Zakaria’s former manager Marco Rose has also been openly complimentary about the £51,000-per-week midfielder, previously telling Sky Germany: “He is a very complete footballer who still has a lot of development potential. He has incredible dynamics, understanding of the game and is not yet at the end of his development.”

The appraisals don’t stop there either, with Swiss stopper Yann Sommer suggesting he had qualities that reminded him of Michel Platini and Zinedine Zidane.

With Allan and Fabian Delph in their 30s, and Tom Davies, Jean-Philippe Gbamin and Andre Gomes all struggling for form, bolstering Everton’s options in the middle of the park is likely to be high up on Benitez’s to-do list.

Whether the 61-year-old can entice Zakaria to Goodison Park remains to be seen, but the Swiss beast would certainly add some much-needed steel and class to the Toffees’ midfield. If they can get him on a free transfer, it may well be one of the biggest bargains Benitez has ever saled.

Guy released by Yorkshire

Simon Guy, the 30-year-old wicketkeeper, has been released by Yorkshire after struggling to push for a first-team place.Guy hasn’t played a first-class match for Yorkshire since July 2007, and has found it difficult to battle back into the side following the brain surgery he underwent this February to remove a cerebral abscess. The emergence of Jonathan Bairstow has also hindered any chance of him returning to the first-team this summer.”It was a difficult decision to release Simon after so many years excellent service to the club,” said Martyn Moxon, Yorkshire’s director of cricket. “Ultimately it was felt to be in the best interests of the Club and the player to part company as we were not going to be able to give him the opportunities he needs at this stage of his career.”
