Rangers: Fraser Wilson says ‘Gers should have signed Lyndon Dykes

Daily Record journalist Fraser Wilson believes Glasgow Rangers made a huge mistake in not signing Lyndon Dykes this summer.

Rangers’ Dykes interest

The former Livingston striker was linked with a potential £2m move across Scotland to Ibrox during the summer. He even spoke about playing for the 54-time Scottish champions but in the end he made the move to English Championship outfit QPR for the aforementioned fee.

Wilson believes that Steven Gerrard made a big mistake in not signing the 25-year-old. He wrote:

“For Rangers supporters there must be a lingering feeling of ‘what if’ every time they see the hitman ruffing up defenders in the dark blue of Scotland.

“While Rangers boss Steven Gerrard must be content with the striking options he has after bringing in Kemar Roofe and Cedric Itten to challenge Alfredo Morelos and Jermain Defoe, it’s fair to say the new guys have still to find top gear.

“Dykes was ready made for the battle which lies ahead in a season like no other for the Ibrox club – yet there are still critics who reckon he’s nothing more than a battering ram.”

Itten, Roofe and Morelos can do the job

Dykes has already started to prove his worth since moving south of the border. He has scored twice in his first four games in the English second tier, whilst he has two goals in five Scotland caps this term. So far, he is looking like a clever acquisition for ex-‘Gers boss Mark Warburton at Loftus Road.

However, it is not as if Rangers have a lack of attacking options at Ibrox. Kemar Roofe and Cedric Itten both joined in the summer and Alfredo Morelos stayed put despite reportedly agreeing personal terms with Lille. So far, the trio have managed nine goals between them – there is still room for improvement, but it is not the worst start.

Dykes could have offered something different, but as Wilson says, Rangers are likely to be happy with their striking options for now.

Southampton vs Manchester City preview: team news, form, how to watch

Southampton welcome Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City to St Mary’s on Sunday in a match between two sides still with plenty to play for this season.

After a terrible start to the campaign that included a humiliating 9-0 home defeat to Leicester City, the Saints have really turned things around and have now reached the 40-point mark with six matches still to play.

Danny Ings in particular has been on top form and once again displayed his skills in a 3-1 win over Watford last weekend.

Meanwhile, City exacted some revenge on champions Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium on Thursday with a 4-0 win, but Guardiola will now turn his focus to assessing his squad and seeing which positions he most needs to invest in, come the summer.

Form

Southampton have been much improved in the second half of the season but their form remains patchy, with Hassenhuttl’s team winning three and losing three of their last six Premier League matches.

However, since the resumption of football, a rather unfortunate defeat to Arsenal for which goalkeeper Alex McCarthy must own some of the blame has been the only setback.

City have not been their consistent selves, either,  losing two of their last five Premier League matches, including the defeat to Chelsea which gifted Liverpool the title.

Aside from that match though they have been excellent since the restart, blowing both Arsenal, Burnley and Liverpool away with a combined 12 goals scored.

Team news

Currently, Southampton are only set to be without Sofiane Boufal and Pierre Emil Hojbjerg for this match, both of whom are doubtful due to thigh and ankle problems respectively.

Stuart Armstrong is a candidate to return after dropping to the bench for the Watford match, while Yan Valery and Michael Obafemi could also be recalled.

Sergio Aguero is City’s only worry in injury terms, with the Argentine not set to return until August due to a knee injury.

After his virtuoso performance against Liverpool, Phil Foden could start once again, while Riyad Mahrez and Bernardo Silva will be hoping for a recall.

How to watch

The match kicks off at 19:00 UTC at St Mary’s this Sunday and will be broadcast live on Premier Sports, with fans also able to follow the match online via live stream.

Arsenal: Danilo Pereira asking price set at £27m by Porto

With Arsenal struggling to pull the finances together to fund a deal for Thomas Partey, they are looking elsewhere and they now know the price they will have to pay if they want to acquire Danilo Pereira from FC Porto.

According to O Jogo (via Daily Mail), the Gunners will have to pay around £27m if they want to buy the 28-year-old. However, this valuation has not gone down well with the north London side, who only want to pay a maximum of £18m for the Portugal international.

Pereira featured 37 times in all competitions last season including in the Champions League and seems to be a solid defensive midfielder as he has managed 1.1 interceptions and 1.2 tackles per game, via WhoScored.

Pereira has experience of major competitions at both club and international level – indeed, he was a Euro 2016 winner with Portugal and has two league titles with Porto – which suggests that Arsenal would  get a very strong calibre of player if they were to sign him.

It is understandable, however, with the current financial struggles at the club that Mikel Arteta does not want to spend nearly £30m on Pereira; and despite his quality and experience, the Gunners might have to look for a cheaper alternative so that they have funds to spend on multiple players this transfer window.

They cannot afford to just splash the cash on one player despite winning the FA Cup, as they finished eighth in the Premier League this year and therefore require greater squad depth and quality if they are to push for a return to the Champions League.

Gunners fans, is Porto’s asking price for Pereira excessive or should Arsenal roll the dice and pay it? Let us know your thoughts by commenting below!

Aston Villa: Fans reveal player they can’t wait to see next season

Many Aston Villa fans have revealed the players they think will have an improved season next term, with many selecting Wesley as the man they think will do better.

Much of Villa’s focus at present is on their Premier League future, currently sitting 19th in the league standings with football at a standstill due to the recent pandemic.

A lack of consistency has been key this season for the Claret and Blue, and Dean Smith has only seen a handful of players continue to impress.

Jack Grealish has arguably been the top performer at the club, but his future is very much a concern with the likes of Manchester United and Everton both linked with interest.

Arriving last summer to bolster Smith’s attack was Brazilian striker Wesley, but a recent injury has seen him miss out, despite gradually performing better and better as his adaptation to English football continued.

Looking ahead to next season, fans have revealed who they think will surprise next season and impress with many opting to choose the ex-Club Brugge man.

O atleta palmeirense repreendeu a atitude.

Man Utd swoop for Ruben Neves "ticks all the boxes", says Shaka Hislop

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Speaking on ESPN FC, former Premier League goalkeeper Shaka Hislop has said Ruben Neves “ticks all the boxes” for Manchester United.

What did he say?

The Portugal international has been an ever-present for Wolves since joining from Porto for a fee in the region of £15.8m, playing 102 times and scoring 14 goals.

The 22-year-old has seen his name previously linked with a move to Old Trafford, and Hislop has thrown his backing behind a potential United swoop.

He said: “Well, that (whether Wolves would let Neves go) is the big question. Let’s assume that Manchester United come up with the funds that prompts Wolves to part with Ruben Neves. Just talent-wise, age-wise, ticks all the boxes for Manchester United. Still a big club, still have a lot of money.

“Assuming they are able to put a package on the table to tempt the player, I don’t think that’s any question, to tempt the club, that is the more difficult proposition, I think they can, I think they will. If they do I think it works perfectly well for both.”

Inspired signing

United have seen first-hand just how much damage Neves can cause, when he scored a long-range thunderbolt against them earlier this season in a 1-1 draw at Molineux. The Portuguese man isn’t afraid of letting fly from distance, as evidenced by his 1.4 shots per game in the Premier League – that number actually jumps up to a ridiculous 3.3 in the Europa League.

Playing alongside Joao Moutinho in the Wolves midfield, Neves is tasked with holding down the engine room. And it is easy to imagine him playing alongside someone like Scott McTominay in the middle of the park for the Red Devils too. At just 22, he is the exact same age as the United academy product, and the duo could more than hold their places in the side for the years to come.

As Hislop suggests, the £45m-rated ace really does “tick all the boxes” for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

Wolves loanee Jesus Vallejo running out of time to save his career at Molineux

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

When presented with the opportunity to sign a young promising defender from Real Madrid it’s hard to turn it down.

Add the fact the man in question captained Spain’s U21s to a European Championship final over the summer and the lure becomes even more irresistible.

Jesus Vallejo arrived on loan from the Spanish giants after guiding his team to victory in the U21 Euros with a glowing reputation.

Madrid recommended Wolves as the place for him to go and it’s easy to see why given the chances of securing football would have been high.

As is well known, Nuno Santo likes to operate with a three-man defence. Not only that, but he also possesses a slim squad, one that used just 21 players in the Premier League last term.

With that in mind, it is perhaps incredibly damning that Vallejo has started just one top-flight game and amassed a measly 612 minutes across all competitions. In league action, that accounts for just 162 minutes.

However, with reports lingering of a possible recall, it’s unlikely he’ll be able to add to that small tally he’s already registered.

A story in Spain this week has suggested that Madrid are unhappy with the 22-year-old’s time in the Midlands and could exercise their right to recall the centre-back in January.

It appears Vallejo now has a real battle on his hands to save his career at Wolves, a club he admitted in September he was happy at.

Those feelings may now be a distant memory. Even despite Willy Boly’s ankle fracture, the Spain youth international has been left on the sidelines.

Nuno doesn’t trust him and what’s indicative of that is the fact midfielders Leander Dendoncker and Romain Saiss have been preferred alongside club captain Conor Coady.

The £9m-rated defender is out of the reckoning and it’s hardly surprising. He was a bystander on his only start in the Premier League, conceding five against Chelsea while his Europa League displays haven’t lived up expectation either.

At the European Championships last summer, he completed 1.8 tackles per game and also registered a pass success rate of 91.7%. However, this term his tackle rate is at just 0.5 on average each outing. He’s also had one error that’s led to a shot at goal in the top-flight.

With Madrid growing ever concerned about his situation, it could be the end of the road for Vallejo at Molineux. He simply hasn’t shown enough and it’s unlikely he ever will given he’s now further down the pecking order.

Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa should select this lineup against Blackburn

Leeds United face another tough test this weekend as they host Blackburn Rovers on Saturday.

On paper, a home game against the side 16th in the league should be rather straightforward, but with the Rovers pushing Preston to the limit and beating Sheffield Wednesday in their last two games, they shouldn’t take this lightly.

Marcelo Bielsa has a number of things to consider ahead of this game, and here’s the lineup we think he should go with at the weekend.

The first thing to note is that the three at the back formation without wingbacks continues after their impressive win over QPR last week.

A three at the back may be exactly what Leeds need to counteract the threat posed by Blackburn’s Bradley Dack.

Kiko Casilla remains in goal as the club have confirmed that he will be available for selection despite the allegations that he racially abused a Charlton player earlier this season.

The back three also remains the same, Luke Ayling was impressive in his role last weekend, while Ben White and Liam Cooper should continue alongside him.

The central midfield spots also have no changes considering the injury problems Leeds have.

Of course, the argument is there to say that Mateusz Klich needs a rest, but with Jamie Shackleton and Adam Forshaw still out with injury it’s hard to say that Leeds have a viable way of replacing him in this one.

Why being the away goalkeeper at Leeds is the toughest job in football in the video below…

However, the line of three just behind the striker does have a change.

Tyler Roberts and Jack Harrison retain their spots after goalscoring performances against the R’s, while Pablo Hernandez gets his first start since his injury against Derby as he’s had enough time to get up to speed. That means that the £10.8m-rated Helder Costa will be dropped to the bench.

Up top, Patrick Bamford starts as Eddie Nketiah’s ongoing injury concerns mean that he’s the only senior striker available for selection.

West Ham fans think the midfield is holding the team back from success

West Ham’s consecutive defeats have led some fans to discuss the problems which have led to a drop in performances, and some believe the midfield is holding them back from success.

Players such as Felipe Anderson and Manuel Lanzini were criticised after the loss to Everton but some think it is a wider issue, with one highlighting an inability to press as a factor which means they will never challenge the top clubs.

Watch West Ham United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Pellegrini failed to add a midfielder over the summer despite both Jack Wilshere and Carlos Sanchez failing last term, having made only 15 league appearances between them.

That means there is a reliance on Mark Noble and Declan Rice to perform to their highest level in every match, and therefore when they underwhelm, as they did on Saturday, it comes as a detriment to the team.

One fan is concerned by the lack of recruitment in the transfer window and believes it was something which urgently needed addressing, with other reactions discussing the current issues that exist.
