Vieira dealt a blow to transfer plans

Crystal Palace have had a quiet transfer window so far, but have been heavily linked to one particular player from Patrick Vieira’s former club this January, but it looks like there has been a blow to those plans.

What’s the word?

Mikel Arteta took to his pre-match press conference ahead of the FA Cup clash against Liverpool to respond to rumours that Eddie Nketiah could be on the move this January.

The Arsenal manager simply told the media:

“The situation is that Eddie is our player and he’s going to stay here with us.”

The 22-year-old forward has been linked with a move away from the club as he enters the last six months of his contract, with both Brighton and Crystal Palace said to be interested in signing him during this window.

However, with Arteta’s response, they could now have to wait and battle to get the striker on a free in the summer.

Vieira will be gutted

This news will be a blow to Vieira’s transfer window plans, as the club is rumoured to potentially be losing Jean-Philippe Mateta this January, with an impending recall from his parent club, Mainz, amid interest from Saint Etienne.

That led to Nketiah being speculated as the player to become his replacement and fill the position.

The setback comes as former Palace manager, Roy Hodgson confirmed that the youngster has been a “long term interest” for the London club when he spoke on Sky Sports Transfer Show last Friday evening:

“He’s a player that’s been on the radar for a number of years let alone months,” said the former England boss.

“He’s a player who I know everyone at the club admires very much and I think he’s the right type of player that Patrick [Vieira] might be interested in – a forward of his type.

“I can imagine him being exactly the type of player that Patrick Vieira would like because he’d know a lot about him because I’m sure his contacts at Arsenal are still very good. He’ll know a lot about him as a person as well.”

Nketiah has not signed a new contract with Arsenal yet, despite having less than six months on his current one, which could be a blessing in disguise for the Eagles.

They could save their money this January and sign the striker on a free transfer in a matter of months, thus, taking the pressure off the Palace manager and the team if they can hold onto Mateta at Selhurst Park for the rest of the season.

That said, the Eagles boss will still be gutted at not getting the chance to acquire him this winter as Nketiah’s tally of five goals in just three EFL Cup outings shows he’s a man in form this term.

A duração do contrato talvez seja o maior problema. Ele quer de dois anos. Precisamos estudar.

Journalist drops Lukaku to Spurs claim

Writing for La Gazzetta dello Sport, Italian reporter Carlo Laudisa has made a big Tottenham Hotspur transfer claim involving Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku.

The Lowdown: Paratici eyes striker…

As per The Athletic, it is believed that a new centre-forward is on the agenda at Spurs as transfer chief Fabio Paratici and manager Antonio Conte eye alternatives to Harry Kane.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-5/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The most hotly-linked forward by some distance has been Fiorentina hotshot Dusan Vlahovic with Spurs long credited to swoop for the Serbian.

There have been other names mentioned, like Mauro Icardi previously, but Laudisa has now made an exciting claim involving Premier League star Lukaku.

The Latest: Journalist makes exciting Lukaku claim…

According to the La Gazzetta journalist, the Chelsea forward could ‘decide to follow Conte to Tottenham’ in the summer, with his Stamford Bridge return making him unhappy thus far.

Indeed, amid his unrest at the Blues, it is believed that Spurs have emerged as a possible 2022 destination for the Belgium international.

The Verdict: Big claim…

This piece of news certainly comes as an exciting claim out of Italy, especially considering Lukaku’s obvious pedigree and the fact he has shone under Conte before at Inter.

Indeed, the 28-year-old bagged 47 goals and 13 assists in just two full Serie A seasons during the duo’s time together at the San Siro, and he has continued in that fashion when given the opportunity under Thomas Tuchel.

Managing to score consistently over his limited appearances, the German has called Lukaku ‘world class’ for his contribution at times over 2021/22 despite the recent unease between the pair.

It is clear that Lukaku has ability, but the devil is in the details, with Chelsea arguably unwilling to sell such an impactful, big-name player to a direct rival like Spurs. It is also debatable whether the Lilywhites could afford such a swoop given that Lukaku is valued at around £90m by Transfermarkt and commands a seismic £350,000-per-week pay package.

While Lukaku being linked with Spurs comes as a very interesting development, we believe that a move is less than likely later in the year.

Rangers keeping tabs on Leeds’ Summerville

A Rangers transfer update has emerged, regarding a Premier League player they may try to bring to Ibrox…

What’s the talk?

According to the Daily Mail, via The Scottish Sun, the Gers are interested in a deal to sign Crysencio Summerville from Leeds this month.

The report claims that they are keeping close tabs on his situation as they consider a swoop to bring him in on loan for the second half of the campaign.

Masterclass

Gio van Bronckhorst could seal a masterclass in his first transfer window by securing a deal for his fellow countryman this month.

The 20-year-old has made five Premier League appearances for Leeds this season and has impressed for the Whites at youth level. He has produced nine goals and eight assists in 24 games for the club’s U23 side, showing that he has the potential to both score and create goals from out wide.

He was dubbed a “bag of tricks” by coach Chris Powell and this suggests that he could be an exciting player for the fans to enjoy watching. Rangers supporters would love to see him pulling off skill moves to beat an opponent on the wing before scoring or creating a goal, which could endear him to the Ibrox crowd and make him a favourite if he is successful.

Leeds Live’s Joe Donnohue previously lauded the winger on Twitter, saying: “Cody Drameh and Crysencio Summerville were great together down the right flank for Leeds’ U23s last season. Seems like more of the same this year. Drameh an excellent carrier, weightless going forward. Summerville a wriggler, impossible to handle.”

At the age of 20, he has the world at his feet as he has plenty of time to develop and grow into a top player. This is why signing him on loan could be a masterclass by van Bronckhorst, as Rangers could be getting a player with untapped potential who could regularly contribute goals for the club in the Premiership without paying a transfer fee for him.

If the transfer is a success and he is able to hit the ground running in Scotland then the Gers could look to negotiate a permanent deal at the end of the season. Although, it is slightly premature for that as a loan is yet to be agreed between the two sides at this moment in time.

Milner back in training with Liverpool

Liverpool have been plagued with injury problems for the last 18 months, with the defence heavily effected last season and now the midfield having an injury crisis this season.

The Reds have been dealt a number of injury blows to their midfield this term with Thiago Alcantara, Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones all picking up issues over the first three months of the campaign so far.

Thankfully, Thiago, Fabinho, Henderson and Milner are all back available for selection, with James Milner pictured in training ahead of the Champions League game against Porto tonight.

The 35-year-old took to Twitter on Tuesday evening to confirm his availability for the European clash accompanied with a number of training pictures:

The tweet simply captioned; “Back and ready for Porto #ucl #YNWA”

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/check-out-the-latest-liverpool-news” title=”Check out the latest Liverpool news!”]

Milner was a free transfer for Liverpool back in 2015 and has certainly proved he’s worth his weight in gold by being part of winning the first-ever Premier League title for the side in 2020 and contributing to the Champions League win in 2019 too.

He has currently achieved 258 appearances for the side, with 26 goals and 43 assists, playing in a number of key roles in the team over his six-year stint in Merseyside.

Despite slowly coming to the end of his career, Milner has been an important and reliable part of the team yet again this season, filling in for missing starters in a number of positions already, offering his experience and presence in games where younger and less experienced players are starting alongside him. Thus, the club’s manager will undoubtedly be buzzing to see such a valuable asset back and ready to use.

It would make sense to add him into the starting line up straight away this evening against Porto. Although Liverpool have qualified for the last sixteen already, Jurgen Klopp will undoubtedly still want to maintain his system, style of play and hold lots of possession in the game, something Milner is extremely familiar with.

If Klopp does intend to play a much weaker side, which we imagine will be the case due to his comments in his press conference yesterday, Milner will be a fantastic addition to a midfield that is likely to not include starters like Fabinho and Thiago who have only recently returned from injury, where an opportunity is there to give them both a break.

Liverpool have already qualified for latter stages alongside Manchester United, Chelsea, Juventus, Ajax and Bayern Munich, but Jurgen Klopp will still be hoping to remain unbeaten in the competition.

Aston Villa line up two January moves

Aston Villa are hoping to furnish Steven Gerrard with a new centre-back and a defensive midfielder in the January transfer window, according to Football Insider.

The lowdown

The 41-year-old took over from Dean Smith earlier this month, so January will be his first chance to put his stamp on the squad through recruitment.

Villa spent £89.84m in the summer, with £34.5m addition Emiliano Buendia becoming their record signing and Leon Bailey and Danny Ings slotting into their all-time top four purchases.

Their outlay was the fifth-highest in the Premier League, yet they still managed to turn a £24.46m profit after the British record sale of Jack Grealish to Manchester City.

The latest

An Aston Villa source has told Football Insider that NSWE are prepared to sanction “big money” deals in the mid-season window.

Gerrard has identified the two positions he would like to be strengthened, namely centre-back and defensive midfield.

The verdict

When he was at Rangers, Gerrard had expressed frustration at the club’s lack of spending, so you can imagine that he sought assurances that he’d be adequately backed before taking on the Villa job.

Who could he potentially be targeting? Perhaps the centre-back could be reported target Pau Torres of Villarreal, and that would certainly be a big-money deal, with a report from Fichajes claiming that he’s valued at around £42m.

Eclipsing their transfer record once again to snap up the ‘extraordinary’ centre-back would be quite some statement of intent under the new boss.

Pietersen makes all-time England XI

Kevin Pietersen is the only player from almost the past two decades to make it into the all-time England XI chosen by Cricinfo, with Ian Botham the next most-recent star to make the cut.Pietersen’s selection, by a panel of renowned cricket writers, journalists and commentators, confirms the impact he has had on the game since he made his Test debut in 2005, but there are no places for anyone else who contributed to England’s Ashes victories in 2005 and 2009.The opening positions are taken by Jack Hobbs and Len Hutton, two of thetrue legends of the game, and they are followed by Walter Hammond at No. 3 and Ken Barrington at No. 4. Pietersen, who is still in the early part of his career but is already recognised as a match-changing batsman, only just made it to final XI, beating off strong competition from Denis Compton, who captured the hearts and the minds of English fans in the post-war years.Andrew Flintoff and Tony Greig both made it to the shortlist for allrounders, but Botham won that contest hands down. “A proven century-maker, unlike Andrew Flintoff, and capable of bowling either fast like Harold Larwood, or outswing like Fred Trueman,” Scyld Berry, the editor of , wrote about Botham. “Hammond at first slip and Botham at second would make a formidable cordon beside Alan Knott.”Knott was the unanimous choice as the wicketkeeper. Sydney Barnes and Harold Larwood won the premier fast bowler’s positions by an overwhelming majority, but it was a closer contest for Fred Trueman who had stiff competition from Frank Tyson. Bob Willis was the only modern fast bowler who came close to selection. The sole spinner’s position went to Derek Underwood, who beat Jim Laker by a single vote.Last month Cricinfo produced a definitive all-time great Australia team, which didn’t include any members of the current Australian line-up. Over the coming year, the website will turn its eye to all of the top Test-playing nations and round off the deliberations with an all-time World XI.Cricinfo also asked readers to select their all-time XIs and the only two differences were that David Gower was voted into the middle order ahead of Barrington and Laker took the spin position from Underwood. For more details click here. The nomineesOpeners

McDonald to return home temporarily

Andrew McDonald, the Australian allrounder, has left the squad at Headingley temporarily and will fly home to be with his wife who is expected to give birth to the couple’s first child next week.McDonald will rejoin the squad in England on August 13, in time for Australia’s tour match against Kent, which begins on August 15. McDonald has played four Tests in his career, the last of which was in Cape Town in March, but is yet to be selected in England.

Flintoff's fitness under the spotlight again

As Australia’s batsmen rumbled onwards against a toothless, swing-less attack, the state of Andrew Flintoff’s fitness became a significant cause for concern

Andrew Miller03-Aug-2009It was, on the face of it, a dull final day at Edgbaston – the least enthralling of the series so far, as England’s slim victory prospects were thwarted almost as early as the first hour. But in Ashes cricket, nothing takes place without subtext, and as Australia’s batsmen rumbled onwards against a toothless, swing-less attack, the state of Andrew Flintoff’s fitness became a significant cause for concern.A fortnight ago on the final day at Lord’s, Flintoff produced the finest spell of his career – a ten-over rampage to seize the second Test and push England into the ascendancy in the series. Today, he was a pillion passenger at best, with just 11 laboured overs in the entire day, and none at all in the drifty final session. While he has rarely got the rewards his wholehearted style deserves, it is almost unheard of for him to go an entire Test without a single wicket – the last time it happened was in Perth in December 2006 when England surrendered the Ashes, and before that you have to rewind to July 2003.Instead of one of the flamboyant celebrations that lit up Lord’s, the enduring image of Flintoff’s effort came when his left ankle crumpled in his delivery stride, midway through his second spell. Back-to-back contests are notoriously tough for fast bowlers at the best of times, but seeing as Flintoff endured two further injections in his ragged right knee just to take the field for this match, Friday’s fourth Test at Headingley cannot come along quickly enough for Ricky Ponting’s newly uplifted Australians.”You could see he went downhill pretty quickly during the course of this game,” said Ponting, “so his injury is probably taking more of an effect than we realise as well. But we’ll see what happens on the morning of the game. It’s been visible over the last couple of days, he’s been struggling more than he did during the Lord’s Test. When he bowled yesterday he was hobbling a bit and he only bowled 11 overs today. No doubt they protected him late this afternoon, knowing how big a figure he is for the team.””There wasn’t as much in this wicket for him as there has been on previous wickets,” countered Andrew Strauss. “It was one of those wickets where the more you hit the deck, the slower it came off, and at the back of my mind I’m conscious that when the conditions aren’t really helping him, there’s no point in tearing him to death. There’s obviously some soreness there, but I don’t think anything has deteriorated massively over the course of the game. But he needs to rest up well because back-to-back Tests are hard for any bowler. We’ll see how he is for Thursday.”The Flintoff factor is becoming a double-edged sword for England – Australia will continue to fear and respect him so long as he remains in the side, but it’s becoming increasingly hard for the selectors to know how best to deal with such a talismanic figure. Though Strauss suggested that his momentum-seizing innings of 74 had been a bonus, the reality is that it muddied the waters even further. Had Flintoff merely been performing as a pace man, then Steve Harmison could step in at Headingley as a like-for-like replacement. Instead, to rest Flintoff on Friday with the Ashes up for grabs would risk unsettling the entire balance of the current team.Andrew Flintoff had a rare, wicketless Test at Edgbaston•Getty Images”If he’s fit to play then we want to play him, if he’s not, we won’t, because the Headingley Test is a massive Test,” said Strauss. “It’s an opportunity to win the Ashes, and we want to play our best team in every game we play. But we’ve got to be conscious that if he’s not fit enough to do his job, he won’t play.”He will be assessed tomorrow, and he knows what he needs to do with his injury,” Strauss added. “A lot of it comes down to how he feels with his own body – he’s got to be honest about that and he has been so far. He’s obviously desperate to play in the last two games, and we’re optimistic he’ll be fine, but I think he realises that if he’s not fit he won’t help us.”England did everything they could to force Flintoff onto centre stage for this final day at Edgbaston – even, arguably, to the detriment of their own match prospects. When play resumed with a 28-over-old ball, all eyes turned naturally to the man who wrecked Australia’s first innings, James Anderson who, like Ben Hilfenhaus, had found the best swing-bowling conditions around the 30-over mark, when the lacquer had started to come off the still-hard ball. Instead Flintoff galloped in for seven largely ineffectual overs, and when Anderson eventually struck with his sixth ball of the day, an hour into the session, the deficit had been written off and Australia were starting to feel comfortable at the crease.”We weren’t expecting it to swing straight away this morning, so we thought it important to set the tone and Fred’s obviously very good at that,” said Strauss, who felt that Graham Onions at the other end had served as a barometer for the moving ball. Ponting, however, expressed his surprise at the move. “The ball has started to swing at the exact time that England had [it] this morning,” he said. “Flintoff was their best bowler at Lord’s, but the wicket and conditions here, being slow, didn’t suit his bowling as much, it suited Anderson and Onions more.”All of which adds up to a curious conundrum for England, who have shown a worrying lack of penetration at three crucial moments of all three Tests. When the ball swings, as it has done in the first innings at Lord’s and on the second morning at Edgbaston, the bowlers – principally Anderson – have filled their boots with alacrity. But in Australia’s only innings at Cardiff, and then for long and untroubled spells in the second innings of the next two Tests, they have rumbled along with barely a moment’s alarm, as the series century count – currently 6-1 in their favour – amply testifies.”When a wicket’s flat, it’s flat, and it’s very hard to conjure something out of nothing,” said Strauss, which is why Flintoff’s bone-jarring performance at Lord’s stands out for the manner in which it bucked the trend. But for that very reason, there is simply no point in playing him if he is anything less than 100% fit. England, to give them their due, have said that all throughout this saga, but at the same time, it will take a gutsy call to withdraw him so close to the finishing line, with absolutely everything at stake – including his own legacy in Test retirement.”I think we can cope without him,” said Strauss. “We’ve had to do it a number of times in the last two years, so it wouldn’t be anything new to us. Generally the bowlers have stepped up when he hasn’t played, but at the moment he’s in great nick with both ball and bat, so we don’t want to play without him if we can help it. You have to swing with the punches you get, and if [he’s unfit] we’ve got a good enough squad to be able to deal with that.”
