Spriegel takes his chance against Scotland

Surrey maintained their perfect start to the Clydesdale Bank 40 with a comfortable 48-run win over Group B rivals Scotland in Edinburgh.

15-May-2011
ScorecardSurrey maintained their perfect start to the Clydesdale Bank 40 with a comfortable 48-run win over Group B rivals Scotland in Edinburgh. The visitors always looked on target for a fourth victory in as many games after some devastating late hitting from Matt Spriegel helped them to 257 for 7 batting first.Scotland’s bowlers had done well to rein in Surrey after an initial onslaught from Steve Davies and Jason Roy, but Spriegel helped his side take 52 from the final 20 deliveries as he finished unbeaten on 82 from 73 balls. It proved a match-winning blast as Scotland battled manfully in pursuit, but simply failed to supply the same type of power hitting to finish on 209 for nine. Neil McCallum top-scored for the hosts with 53 from 51 balls. After his batting heroics, Spriegel claimed the first Scottish wicket when he bowled Fraser Watts and when fellow opener Ryan Flannigan fell from the last ball of the 10th over Scotland were 50 for 2. By contrast, Surrey had been 93 for 1 at the same stage – after Davies and Roy’s powerful start – but the hosts patiently built towards the total in the middle overs thanks to a 72-run stand between McCallum and Preston Mommsen for the fifth wicket.Mommsen departed for a run-a-ball 45 when England Lions seamer Jade Dernbach had him caught by Tom Maynard but with McCallum in touch Scotland reached 200 in the 37th over – the same stage Surrey passed the mark. But where Spriegel stepped up another couple of gears McCallum could not, despite twice clearing the ropes, as he also perished to Dernbach shortly after reaching his half-century to snuff out home hopes.Earlier, Surrey made a blistering start to their innings as they quickly overcame the second-over loss of skipper Rory Hamilton-Brown when he offered a return catch to Matthew Parker. Davies and Roy flayed the Scotland attack in the initial overs as they scored at more than nine an over in a devastating 89-run stand.Davies was particularly brutal, smashing 40 from 28 balls, but his dismissal slowed the rate as Surrey lost three for 17. Roy had looked equally at ease in reaching 52 from 36 balls, but was stumped trying to take the long handle to off-spinner Majid Haq who then also accounted for Maynard. It served to bring caution to Surrey’s batting and the loss of Zander de Bruyn (35) and Chris Schofield (4), both to 20-year-old seamer Josh Davey, pulled the handbrake further as Spriegel offered only sporadic evidence of the late hitting to come. The visitors had only just passed 200 in the 37th over when Gareth Batty departed, but it served as a green light for Spriegel to open his shoulders, clearing the boundary on three occasions, in what proved a match-winning blast.

Darren Sammy, currently leading the West Indies in their Test series against Sri Lanka, has been appointed captain of the squad for the limited-overs leg of the tour. The 15-member contingent sees the return of Adrian Barath, Carlton Baugh and Devon Smith to the one-day side, and also includes uncapped batsman Kirk Edwards. The selectors have not appointed a vice-captain.Ramnaresh Sarwan has been ignored for what is West Indies’ last ODI engagement before the World Cup, after having not been selected for the Tests as well.Edwards, Kieron Pollard, Nikita Miller and Ravi Rampaul will replace Brendan Nash, Devon Thomas, Nelon Pascal and Shane Shillingford, who are currently in Sri Lanka for the Tests. Fast bowler Andre Russell, who made his debut in the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle and is yet to play an ODI, has also been included. While Baugh’s return as first-choice wicketkeeper in place of Denesh Ramdin now extends to the one-day sphere, Smith – the top-order batsman who last played an ODI for West Indies in September 2009 – has also made a comeback. The selectors have also included Barath, who made his one-day debut against Zimbabwe in March before being ignored for the South Africa series.Courtney Browne, the West Indies selector on tour said that this was an important series for them ahead of the upcoming World Cup in the sub-continent. “These are the last ODIs before the World Cup, so we expect the players to make the most of the opportunities.”Edwards, the Barbados batsman, was part of the West Indies A side that played Pakistan A on their just-concluded Caribbean tour.West Indies play five ODIs and one Twenty20 in Sri Lanka. Collingwood concentrates on England preparation

Paul Collingwood insists that Australia’s current struggle for form will have no bearing on England’s preparations ahead of the first Test in Brisbane

ESPNcricinfo staff04-Nov-2010Paul Collingwood insists that Australia’s current struggle for form will have no bearing on England’s preparations ahead of the first Test in Brisbane later this month, as they turn their attentions to their opening three-day warm-up game against Western Australia in Perth on Friday.England have named a 13-man squad for the first of their three practice matches, with the fit-again Ian Bell expected to replace Eoin Morgan as the only change from the side that won the fourth Test against Pakistan at Lord’s back in August. That level of stability is something that the Aussies cannot currently rely upon, having slumped to an improbable one-wicket defeat at the hands of Sri Lanka at the MCG on Wednesday – their sixth consecutive loss in all internationals dating back to July.In addition to their lack of form, Australia are also struggling to deal with newspaper reports suggesting that Michael Clarke, the team’s vice-captain, has fallen out with senior colleagues who do not believe he should be the next Test captain after Ricky Ponting. But Collingwood, while clearly happy for his opponents to take the heat in the early stages of the tour, was adamant that England needed to keep their counsel in the coming days and not get distracted by matters beyond their control.”It’s a different position – it’s something we’re not used to when we come to Australia,” admitted Collingwood, who witnessed at first hand the media feeding frenzy that greeted England in 2006-07, not least when Marcus Trescothick quit the tour ahead of the Brisbane Test with a recurrence of his stress-related illness. “But we know they’re a good side, and we’re going to have to play very well to beat them.”Let’s be honest, the more games they lose the better it is for us. The more games they do lose, confidence levels may go down,” he added. “But we’re not going to read too much into it. We’ve got to prepare ourselves as a team to be in the best frame of mind going into the Test matches. I’m sure they’ll be trying to do that themselves too. We’re not going to take them lightly – it’s as simple as that.”Australia in a home Ashes Test will be a different proposition to the team that lost the first ODI against Sri Lanka, Collingwood insisted, but nevertheless, the manner in which they let slip a seemingly impregnable position at 107 for 8 has been taken as further evidence of a loss of killer instinct, something that England themselves witnessed at Cardiff in 2009, when James Anderson and Monty Panesar saved the game with an unbroken tenth-wicket stand.”Most of us watched the game [against Sri Lanka], but really we’re very much focused on what we’ve got to do rather than the opposition,” said Collingwood. “Obviously it’s a different team to the Test team, so we’re very much preparing ourselves to do well in these warm-up games. It would be silly to let the foot off the gas because of the opposition going through whatever they are going through.”Collingwood, for his part, has plenty to keep his mind occupied in the coming days, as he prepares to readjust himself to first-class cricket after a sparse home summer against Pakistan. However, with just seven first-class outings since the World Twenty20 got underway in April, he’s not too concerned about the suggestions that he is out of nick, especially having overcome several doubters on the last trip four years ago with a gutsy double-century at Adelaide.”Anyone who says it’s a bad trot I’m going through, I’m not going to read too much into it,” he said. “The challenges you get out here are exactly what I want as a cricketer, and something I’m very excited to get my teeth into. I look forward to playing what I hope will be some big, match-winning innings.”As far as England are concerned, their preparation for Brisbane begins in earnest at Perth on Friday, and will continue through both of their remaining warm-up matches at Adelaide and Hobart. “If we can get three wins under our belts that will be fantastic,” said Collingwood. “”You want good individual performances out there as well to get the confidence going high, because the belief is the most important thing, coming to Australia.”There is genuine belief around the camp that we can win out here,” he added. “I don’t think anything that happens between now and the first Test will waver that belief in any way. The guys are very experienced now, playing in different conditions round the world, and although there are a couple of technical adjustments, I think that belief is the major thing we can bring into this tough environment. We’ve done plenty of talking in the dressing room – now is the time to go out there and put those big performances in.”England squad Andrew Strauss (capt), Alistair Cook, Jonathan Trott, Kevin Pietersen, Paul Collingwood, Ian Bell, Matt Prior (wk), Stuart Broad, Graeme Swann, Steven Finn, James Anderson, Eoin Morgan, Chris Tremlett

Manchester City: Romano drops big transfer update

This summer is set to be an incredibly exciting one for Manchester City who are attempting to lure one of the best names in world football to the Etihad Stadium.

But what is the latest on their pursuit of Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland? Fabrizio Romano reveals all.

What’s the word?

Speaking on the newest episode of the Here We Go podcast Romano shared information on their chase for the Norwegian star and what they hope to achieve if and when they agree terms to bring him to England.

Romano said: “Manchester City will sign a midfielder in the summer, at least one midfielder. It depends on the outgoings but they will sign a new midfielder. The focus now is on Erling Haaland and then after securing the Erling Haaland deal they want to focus on a midfielder.

“I will give you one midfielder they are monitoring; they sent their scouts, more than 4 or 5 times this year and that is Matheus Nunes at Sporting. He’s a really good player, he’s playing for Portugal too. Let’s see if they will decide to sign him or another player.”

This comes after the news that Fernandinho would be leaving City behind at the end of the season.

Exciting news

First and foremost, the idea that City look to be confident of securing a deal for Haaland, somebody with 25 goals this term, is incredibly exciting.

However, couple that with the thought of securing Nunes’ signature as well and it looks like the Manchester club mean business over the next few months.

They are still in the hunt to win both the Premier League and Champions League, an achievement that would be closely matched by the acquisitions of Haaland and Nunes.

The latter is a glorious technician and is one of the easiest footballers on the eye to watch.

Indeed, Guardiola commented on his abilities earlier this year: “I would say that Matheus Nunes is one of the best players in the world today.”

On that evidence, there is certainly a large attraction from the Spaniard towards the Portugal international and judging by his underlying numbers, it’s not a surprise to see why.

He has produced three goals and five assists throughout 2021/22 while ranking in the top 1% of players in a similar position across Europe’s top five leagues for dribbles per 90 at 3.19.

Capable of dancing past players with ease and evading the press, he’d be perfect for Guardiola’s system and the Premier League.

These are exciting times for City and if they do end up pursuing a deal for Nunes, it will only elevate the good feeling surrounding the Etihad.

Butt dedicates victory to flood victims

Pakistan captain Salman Butt dedicated his team’s victory at The Oval to the thousands of victims of the raging floods which have submerged vast swathes of the country

There were plenty of nerves for Pakistan before Umar Akmal guided the team home•AFP

Pakistan captain Salman Butt dedicated his team’s victory at The Oval to the thousands of victims of the raging floods which have submerged vast swathes of the country. Calling it a “national disaster”, Butt believed the best he and his team-mates could do was provide some sense of joy with their efforts.Pakistan overcame a severe attack of nerves after lunch to edge home by four wickets as Umar Akmal and Mohammad Amir steered them across the line. Butt revealed the Pakistan team had already donated a percentage of their match fee to the relief fund – England have repeated the gesture – and would be participating in various events during the rest of the tour to raise more money.”The only thing we could do is win a good game to bring some cheer to them,” he said. “We name this victory to the victims. It is like a national disaster. Even if we want to help we can give help with only the daily necessities. We have already donated percentage of our match fees. This is the only way we can give back to the Pakistan people if we perform well.”It was a sentiment supported by Andrew Strauss. “We’re donating a proportion of our match fee to the fund,” he said. “It’s a massive humanitarian catastrophe out there and we’re trying to help as much as we can and the more people who do that the better.”On the field, Saturday morning started full of hope for Pakistan as England lost their final wicket to the fourth ball of the day. A target of 148 in conditions that did not support swing and on an easy-paced pitch that did not take much turn didn’t appear a big ask. Though Yasir Hameed fell immediately for a duck, Pakistan marched confidently towards the target as Butt and Imran Farhat dominating the bowlers. But things are never simple with Pakistan. At lunch they needed 33 with seven wickets in hand, but things turned upside down for the tourists on resumption as they lost three quick wickets. Pakistan’s chronic weakness of folding while chasing small totals threatened to return once again. A sense of gloom descended in the Pakistan dressing room with some members of the management seen with head in hands. However, Butt had enough confidence in his youngest pair of batsmen – Umar (20) and Amir (18), who pushed Pakistan past the victory line. Butt admitted the situation was no different to the drama-filled morning against Australia, at Headingley, where Pakistan had stuttered to a narrow three-wicket win in overcast conditions.”Chasing low totals there is always pressure,” he said. “England faced the same in the last match [at Edgbaston] where they showed a lot of nerves. But I thought there was one mistake which was the run out [of Azhar Ali]. There was no need for that. But this kind of thing happens in these sort of finishes.”At the outset of the series Butt said England were the better team in home conditions and they would be a tougher ask than Australia and easy wins for Strauss’s men in the first two Tests backed up Butt’s fears. Therefore this victory at one of the home side’s most successful venues, where they hadn’t lost since 2001, was hugely significant.”It is terrific because I’ve always been saying this is a young team, an inexperienced team but they have the potential,” Butt said. “They are beginning to show that. They showed it against the Australia side and now the England side.”Butt had particular praise for Mohammad Yousuf who had been recalled by the PCB immediately after the thumping 354-run defeat at Trent Bridge. “The presence of Mohammad Yousuf, a class act, has really helped as the guys have chipped in with his experience,” Butt said. “But it was a team game. Everybody put up his hand: Kamran Akmal took all his catches, the boys fielded well, Amir took wickets, Saeed Ajmal took wickets, Asif bowled really well. The debutant [Wahab Riaz] took wickets and scored runs, Azhar Ali’s 92 was crucial. So I am a very happy captain right now.”While the players will take the credit for the victory, Butt also praised the contribution of the coaching staff led by Waqar Younis which is slowly managing to bring a young team together. “He [Waqar] has had a great impact having played cricket as part of the golden generation. The two Ws did wonders for Pakistan cricket – they won us games from situations where six wickets were needed with just 20 runs to defend.”So people like that in the dressing room gives confidence, reminds you about great wins and puts belief in the youngster that he could become a hero. It is important to have heroes of the youngsters in the dressing room who can cheer them and Waqar has done a great job so far. I hope he continues the same way.”:The Imran Khan Flood Relief Fund: https://ptiuk.org/flood-appeal/The Zindagi Trust: https://zindagitrust.org/donation-flood-disaster-relief.asp: https://www.chowrangi.com/donation-links-and-relief-resources-for-pakistan-flood-victims.html

Steyn and Morkel put South Africa on top

Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
Dale Steyn picked up for 5 for 29 to reach 200 Test wickets in just his 39th match•AFP

South Africa ended the third day at the Queen’s Park Oval in a position of total dominance thanks to the fearsome bowling combination of Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel, who combined to skittle West Indies for just 102 in their first innings. After Morkel’s opening burst left the hosts’ top order in tatters, Steyn ripped through the middle and lower order to take 5 for 29 and become the fourth fastest bowler to reach 200 Test wickets behind Clarrie Grimmett, Dennis Lillee and Waqar Younis. Graeme Smith gave his bowlers a rest after their hard work, choosing not to enforce the follow-on, and by the close he had found the form that had eluded him on the tour thus far to take South Africa to 155 for 2 with an unbeaten 79, a lead of 405.Morkel bowled with great effort to extract life from a slow, low pitch and bully the top order from the crease in the morning session, reducing West Indies to 12 for 3 as Travis Dowlin, Brendan Nash and Chris Gayle were removed with back-of-a-length deliveries.Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Narsingh Deonarine rallied briefly with a 59-run fourth-wicket stand, but Steyn then tore through the middle order, reverse-swinging the ball at high pace as six wickets fell for just four runs in 28 deliveries. Denesh Ramdin showed some pluck as he took West Indies’ score past 100 in a 27-run partnership with No. 11 Nelon Pascal, but Jacques Kallis then returned for a second spell and wrapped up the innings with the wicket of the tailender.South Africa were in control of the game within the first hour, as Morkel bowled with discipline and patience and found pace and alarming bounce off a placid pitch. Dowlin had stern questions asked of his technique against the short ball, and the whereabouts of his off stump, before he lost patience and pushed at one that he should have left.Morkel made it two wickets in two balls when he had Brendan Nash caught behind off the glove with the first delivery of his next over. Umpire Steve Davis didn’t think he had got anything on it, but the South Africans were convinced and asked for a referral, upon which Davis’s decision was overturned. With the first ball of his next over Morkel got the wicket that South Africa really wanted, as Chris Gayle went to pull a back-of-a-length delivery that wasn’t quite short enough for the shot and the resulting inside edge cannoned into his stumps to put West Indies in serious trouble at 12 for 3.With Morkel and Steyn taken off after their opening spells, Chanderpaul and Deonarine began to settle and took a particular liking to Paul Harris, who bowled six unsuccessful overs for 25 runs. They managed to weather another short burst from the opening pair before lunch, but when they returned, refreshed after the break, West Indies’ capitulation was quick in coming. The partnership was broken as Steyn went round the wicket and sent down a brutal bouncer at Chanderpaul, who gloved an easy looping catch to Mark Boucher.Dwayne Bravo, too, was bounced out shortly afterwards, although in his case it was a lack of bounce that contributed to the dismissal. Morkel dug one in halfway down and Bravo, expecting the ball to rear up at him, crouched and turned his head away but the ball kept low and flicked the glove on its way through. In a sustained assault of fast bowling of the highest standard, Deonarine was next, shouldering arms to a delivery that reversed in to him from around the wicket to have his stumps splayed. Shane Shillingford fell to the very next ball as Steyn continued to find devilishly late movement at high pace and the batsman was struck on the pad right in front of the wicket.Ramdin managed to survive the hat-trick ball – though it was wide of off stump and he flashed wildly at it – but three balls later Steyn reached the 200-wicket milestone by beating Sulieman Benn for both pace and movement to rattle his stumps. His fifth wicket came just two balls later, as Ravi Rampaul – like Deonarine before him – failed to pick up the reverse swing as Steyn came round the wicket and he left a ball that clattered into his off stump. With that, West Indies were 75 for 9 and Steyn’s four overs since the lunch break had yielded five wickets, for the cost of just four runs. When Ramdin took three boundaries off his 14th over, Steyn was pulled out of the attack, but the fightback was a brief one as Kallis nipped Nelon Pascal out in the second over of his spell. Deciding against the follow-on, Smith and Alviro Petersen put on 56 without much discomfort despite the fact that the pitch was beginning to exhibit huge variations in bounce. After Petersen was trapped in front of his stumps by Benn for 22, Hashim Amla suffered his second failure of the game, driving Shillingford uppishly into the hands of a diving Deonarine in the covers to reduce South Africa to 79 for 2.But Smith fought to a half-century off 78 balls and Kallis was also in belligerent mood, his first boundary a massive six over long-on off Shillingford. He took South Africa’s lead past 400 with a savage pull off Pascal before fading light forced the players from the field.

Newcastle injury news on Wilson

Journalist Pete O’Rourke has now dropped some Newcastle United injury news involving Callum Wilson.

The Lowdown: Injury worries

After Fabian Schar was forced to withdraw from the Switzerland squad for their upcoming friendlies against England and Kosovo due to an adductor problem, the injuries seem to be piling up for Eddie Howe and his team.

Aside from Wilson, Kieran Trippier has also found himself sidelined, but it looks as if he is now stepping up his recovery, while Isaac Hayden is out long-term and Martin Dubravka is reportedly suffering from angina.

The Latest: O’Rourke on Wilson

Speaking to The Transfer Tavern, O’Rourke has now given an update on Wilson’s fitness after he joined his teammates in Dubai, claiming that he is ‘making good progress’:

“He’s gone away with him on this trip to Dubai just to work on his fitness as well.

“He’s been out since December with his injury but making good progress.”

The Verdict: Big boost

Of course, the fact that Wilson is making good progress is a big boost for the St. James’ Park faithful.

It was expected that he would not return until the end of April, but now it looks as if he could come back much sooner.

Wilson still remains the North East club’s top scorer in all competitions so far this season, despite being out injured since January, and he is more than capable of providing the goals that could guarantee their safety.

Nonetheless, should he, Trippier and Schar all return within the next couple of weeks, it should give everyone on Tyneside a huge lift.

BCCI president wanted franchise tender postponed

The BCCI president Shashank Manohar’s strong objection to the controversial clauses in the tender process on Sunday, the day the two new owners for the fourth IPL season were to be unveiled, is believed to be the prime reason for the auction being be postponed to March 21. Reportedly, Manohar made it clear that the IPL, despite its unprecedented success, was merely a BCCI sub-committee with the board president in charge.Speaking to the , Niranjan Shah, the vice-chairman of the IPL governing council, said, “The [BCCI] president felt a few clauses were too stiff and he wanted some modifications. Since the president’s approval is necessary for going ahead with the process and naming the winning bids, the entire process was cancelled and we asked for fresh tenders, which will now be opened on March 21.”The tournament has been launched under the BCCI banner and the committee, which runs the tournament and sets the rules and regulations for the franchises, is formed by the cricket board. The BCCI is the final authority in all cricket-related matters in the country. It is mandatory to have the BCCI president’s approval before the IPL committee decides on anything.”Unlike the first season, the bidders for the new franchises had to establish that their net worth was $1 billion. An advance guarantee of $100 million as well as a rolling bank guarantee for the sum of the winning bid had to be provided as well. The clauses had forced some big names, including the MCC and Muthoot Group, to back out from the bidding process, leaving just two serious bidders – the Adani Group and Videocon – in the race.Manohar wanted more parties to be involved in the process and proposed that the tender clauses be scrapped altogether. The bids were not opened and were returned to the bidders. Lalit Modi, the IPL commissioner, had no option but to drop the contentious clauses in the invitation to tenders, though the floor price to bid for a franchise – $225 million – was retained. The re-tendering process is believed to have irked the bidders as well. A consortium comprising the Videocon group, led by Venugopal Dhoot, Panchshil Realty’s founder chairman Atul Chordia and the Bollywood couple of Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor, may opt out of the bidding process the second time, having been keen on purchasing a franchise in Pune.”We had a very good consortium between me, Saif, Kareena and Videocon,” Chordia told the . “Our mood is off now, I don’t think it will happen now. For the last eight days, we have worked so hard on it – things like branding, merchandising, paper work.””When the BCCI have an efficient team with eminent lawyers and businessmen, why did they put stringent conditions in place and then take a U-turn? There were three legitimate bids. I just can’t understand the motive behind this.”They just cancelled the bid without giving any reason. We were completely legitimate, we had completed all the paper-work, we had fulfilled all the conditions. If they didn’t want a stringent tender, why did they float one in the first place? The manner in which it was done was not at all sporting.”Chordia proposed that instead of rebidding, the IPL should have cancelled the tenders if they didn’t want to open them. “The minimum valuation was $225 million, which is about Rs 1,100 crore. So we had definitely put at least Rs 1,100 crore. We must have spent more than Rs 10 crore to get everything organised.”
