Wolves fans criticise Podence performance

A number of Wolves supporters were unhappy with Daniel Podence’s performance against Southampton, even though they won the game.

Bruno Lage’s side faced an important Premier League match on Sunday afternoon, having only won once in five outings in the competition before kickoff.

It may not have been the most entertaining game, but Raul Jimenez’s superb solo effort clinched a vital 1-0 victory at St Mary’s, taking Wolves into 14th place in the table.

There were a number of strong performers on the day for the visitors, but one player who never seemed at his best was Podence, who lost possession nine times overall.

The 25-year-old is still looking for his first league goal or assist of the season and Wolves could do with him going up a gear.

“Great support, fabulous for Raul to score just a shame that Podence and Marcal couldn’t find an away shirt to pass to. Adama and Ayt Nouri please Bruno”

“Though we were overall very poor, wing-backs both dreadful, midfield missing, Podence terrible. Hwang meh, didn’t even think the centre-halves were particularly good, some bad positioning at times & gave up passing from back. Bit of magic saved us, but Jimenez poor up to that point”

“Thought we were by far the better team 1st half but picked wrong option time and time again. Podence had a nightmare, Raul edge of box chose not to shoot. After we scored I thought we were horrific”

“Hwang finding his feet in the league maybe but Podence believes his own hype and Marcel thinks Wolves are his Pension. Totally inept performance from the last two”

Butt hits back at senate

Two days after an intense interrogation at the hands of the senate, the PCB launched a bullish counter-attack, effectively claiming that the upper house of parliament’s bark was worse than it’s bite.Ijaz Butt, the board chairman, and other officials were taken through the ringer on a number of issues during a six-hour session in front of the senate’s standing committee on sports on Monday. It culminated with a call by three senators for President Asif Ali Zardari to dissolve the board. But in a press conference at the Gaddafi Stadium today, Butt brushed aside the resignation demands, correctly pointing out that the senate had little actual power to do anything. The body can only make recommendations and occasionally grill board officials: decisive action of this nature can only be taken by President Zardari, who is also patron of the board.”They have no power to tell us to do something,” Butt said. “They can criticise us as much as they want but the only one who can take decisions like that is the patron of the board.”Prompted by the extensive media coverage the particular session received – little of it flattering – Butt held a press conference and sought to set the record straight on a number of issues.Senators had claimed that Butt had exaggerated the extent of the PCB’s financial plight at a previous senate hearing and that the balance currently in their account did not indicate impending bankruptcy. Butt said, however, that the balance he had told them still stood.”When Dr Nasim Ashraf took over from Shaharyar Khan, our reserves were Rs 3.6 billion,” Butt said. “When I took over they were Rs 1.5-1.6 billion. In this we also had urgent liabilities. When I told the senate we had Rs 2.6 billion that included Rs 1 billion that was a 10% advance on our TV rights deal that has been signed. Instead of applauding our efforts to raise money, the senators criticised it. We made no incorrect statements.”Butt again disputed claims by contractors and an architect that a renovation works project at the Gaddafi Stadium could be completed for Rs 310 million and not the Rs 471 million he claimed it had spiralled to. “The cost aside, how is it that nobody remembers that the project has completely missed its deadline? There was a date given for it to be ready in time for the Champions Trophy and it wasn’t. Isn’t that a problem?” asked Butt. There was further fire directed at his predecessors, however, as Butt again highlighted the insurance deals the board signed last year ahead of the eventually postponed visit of Australia. “They gave a premium of approximately Rs 50 million. I was on the governing board at the time and asked about it but was never shown anything,” Butt said. “When I took over, I was told by several professionals that those deals were a waste of time and money. Even the auditor general told us they are worth nothing.”

Swann on song as England seize the day

You wait nine years for your first Test wicket, then two come along all at once. Whatever pre-conceived notions Graeme Swann developed during that hiatus between his first England tour – to South Africa in 1999-2000 – and his maiden Test cap, they were soundly trounced in six extraordinary deliveries before tea on the second day at Chennai.”I thought Test cricket was meant to be boring,” said a breathless Swann immediately after the close. Not a bit of it. A first-ball long-hop, a second-ball appeal, and a third-ball breakthrough would have been quite enough excitement for most cricketers. Swann, however, did not finish there, and by the time he had snaked the sixth delivery of his debut over into the back pad of the legendary Rahul Dravid, England had taken firm control of a contest that, as recently as last week, might never have taken place at all.For a player who’s been sat on the Test periphery since the turn of the millennium, Swann’s arrival on the highest stage has come in a manic rush. “I was determined to enjoy whatever happened in this game,” he said. “I’m not stupid and I realise that finger spinners don’t get that great a chance in Test cricket, especially in England, so I was going to enjoy every minute I could get out here. I think my mum could have hit the first ball for four, it was a terrible delivery, but after that my head was spinning. I felt like I’d scored a goal at Wembley.”Coincidentally, the last bowler to grab two wickets in his first over of Test cricket was also made to wait an eternity for his big moment. At Chester-le-Street in 2003, almost eight years after missing the tour of South Africa in 1995-96 with a back injury, Richard Johnson nailed the Zimbabwean pair of Mark Vermeulen and Stuart Carlisle (also lbw) with his third and fourth deliveries. There Swann will hope the similarity ends. Though Johnson picked up Man-of-the-Match awards in each of his first two Tests, he was jettisoned for good only one game later. It’s hard, however, to envisage the same fate befalling Swann. For it wasn’t just the identity of his victims that caught the eye but the manner of their dismissals. Gautam Gambhir was the stand-out batsman in last month’s destruction of Australia with a century and a double-century in consecutive innings, while Dravid – for all his current woes – remains arguably India’s most significant player of the decade. Yet, both were undone by a bowler who trusted himself, even after a rank first-ball loosener, to bowl with loop, dip, guile and bite – four key factors that his senior partner, Monty Panesar, seems to have discarded in his endless quest to locate that elusive right area.Backed up with aggressive fields from a captain who trusted him to enter the attack ahead of Panesar, Swann’s variety was the precursor to his success. Both his victims fell lbw, but in subtly different manners. Gambhir was partially undone by an appeal for a bat-pad catch from the previous delivery, which in turn primed umpire Harper to uphold an even louder appeal when Gambhir offered no stroke on off stump. Dravid, from over the wicket this time, was deceived first by subtle drift from off to leg, then pinned by sharp purchase off the wicket. Harbhajan Singh, who questioned the quality of England’s slow bowlers, would have been hard-pressed to better such a double-whammy.Harbhajan will have an opportunity to back up his chicken-counting words with deeds when he resumes on 13 tomorrow, but in fairness his comments were aimed less at Swann and more at Panesar, whose return to India – the scene of his own Test debut in 2005-06 – was expected to be the slow-bowling highlight of England’s bowling performance. And though he did grab a vital, and slightly bewildering, caught-and-bowled to remove VVS Laxman, Panesar’s stock delivery was once again too flat and fast through the air to create any real problems for his opponents. After a hyper-charged start to his international career, the stagnation in Panesar’s game has been a nagging cause for concern for the England camp. His average against India has now drifted to an unflattering 53.21, and he has not bowled in tandem with a frontline spinner since the Mumbai Test in 2005-06 when, as Duncan Fletcher pointedly observed in his autobiography, he was also outbowled by his then-partner, Shaun Udal. At the close of play, he reappeared in the middle almost before the stumps had been drawn, under the tutelage of the entire England coaching set-up.
Andrew Flintoff’s dismissal of Sachin Tendulkar, paled compared to the hug of unstinting gratitude that Steve Harmison gave him after he caught danger man Yuvraj Singh at second slip © Getty Images
Panesar, it should be stressed, did not have a bad day at all, but he was by a distance the least inspired of a bowling quintet who could yet ensure that this Test is remembered for more than just the horrific circumstances of its inception. Steve Harmison and James Anderson – who did not manage a single wicket in a dismal one-day campaign – responded to the responsibility of the new ball with magnificent opening salvoes. Harmison stalked to the crease with that elusively menacing rhythm to extract unsettling lift from the surface, while Anderson generated genuine pace and subtle natural swing with which he curbed the excesses of his nemesis, Virender Sehwag. But England’s unsung star, inevitably, was Andrew Flintoff, whose importance to international cricket will never be measured in statistics alone. His cool return catch to remove Sachin Tendulkar was the tangible reward for his efforts, but it paled compared to the hug of unstinting gratitude that Harmison gave him after the late, and vastly significant, dismissal of Yuvraj Singh.Throughout the one-day series, Yuvraj was a colossus. England did not have a clue how or where to bowl to him, as he banished them for a brace of centuries in the opening two games and 325 runs from 251 balls all told. Today, with Flintoff fizzing past his edge at will, and reminding him of his frailties between deliveries to boot, he was a player constrained by the expanse of possibilities that exist in Test cricket. Mahendra Singh Dhoni at the other end did his best to calm his jumpy colleague, but it was all to no avail. A perfect full-length, late-swinger from Harmison grazed the edge, Flintoff himself claimed the catch, and the seal was set on a day that belonged unequivocally to England.

Stanford apologises for on-camera flirting

Allen Stanford, the Texan billionaire who has bankrolled the Stanford Super Series, has apologised for his behaviour after being caught on camera flirting with players’ wives and girlfriends

Allen Stanford, the Texan billionaire who has bankrolled the Stanford Super Series, has apologised for his behaviour after being caught on camera flirting with players’ wives and girlfriends.Stanford – who, after all, owns the ground – has his own TV cameramen following his every move at the tournament, though this was perhaps one incident that he might have chosen to cull from transmission. During Sunday’s match between England and Middlesex, Stanford was seen with his arm around two women, including Alastair Cook’s girlfriend Alice Hunt, while bouncing Matt Prior’s pregnant wife, Emma, on his knee. “If that was my wife he’d put on his lap I would have wanted to punch him,” one England player told the .The women were said to be embarrassed, though unsure how to react.Stuart Broad, who was bowling at the time, commented: “When the pictures came up on the big screen there were a lot of gobsmacked people in our side. Matt Prior was in a state of shock, especially as his wife is pregnant.”Stanford, 58, later issued an apology. “He understood that the players were not particularly pleased with the incident,” said a Stanford spokesman. “He called both Kevin Pietersen and Matt Prior personally and they have accepted his apology.”Not all of the England squad were quite so bothered by the incident, however. Stanford will pay the players US$1million each if they beat his Superstars on Saturday, and Graeme Swann told reporters: “We went to bed laughing about it. He phoned KP and Prior to apologise, and it’s water under the bridge. I don’t think there was any genuine ‘let’s go home and not play’ feeling.”A few of the lads got upset about the antics with the WAGs, but I didn’t see what happened,” added Swann. “Someone said he walks around like he owns the place! He has built a ground, organised a tournament and attracted one of the biggest teams in the world … you can’t be surprised if he does feel like he owns the place, because he does.”

Mott undecided on New Zealand job

Matthew Mott has said he is 50-50 on whether to accept the job as New Zealand’s coach or stay in his current role with New South Wales

Matthew Mott has said he is 50-50 on whether to accept the job as New Zealand’s coach or stay in his current role with New South Wales. Mott is New Zealand Cricket’s preferred choice to replace John Bracewell but after only one season as a first-class coach he is uncertain whether to take on the job.”I’m definitely keeping my options open. I’ll be brutally honest, it’s about a 50-50 split at the moment,” Mott told . “I’d love to keep repaying the faith that New South Wales showed in me when I made the progression from player to coach. I can’t fault the way they’ve looked after me.”Mott, 35, was a first-class batsman with Queensland and Victoria but ended his playing career relatively early to move into coaching. He was an assistant under Trevor Bayliss at New South Wales before taking the senior role in 2007-08 and he guided the Blues to the Pura Cup title in his first season. He became the frontrunner for the New Zealand job when the South Africans Graham Ford and Mickey Arthur made themselves unavailable. However, an improved two-year offer from New South Wales has made the decision a difficult one for Mott.”There always comes a time to move on, and whether that time’s now,” he said. “In an ideal world I’d love to have another couple of years here. There’s also the fact that the job you knock back is the one you probably never get. That’s weighing on my mind a bit.”Mott has some links with the New Zealand team; he coached Brendon McCullum at the Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL. He said besides landing the job as Australia’s coach, the New Zealand role was the next best option on the international scene.”From what I’ve heard Dan Vettori is a very good captain and a fresh bunch of senior players around him are keen to make a difference,” Mott said. “With the management changes there seems to be a good young vibe with a bit of a blank canvas, which is what appeals to me.”Mott will this week get a closer look at the New Zealanders when they face New South Wales in a tour match at the SCG starting on Thursday. New Zealand have confirmed their starting line-up for the match and it includes four specialist fast bowlers with Mark Gillespie and Grant Elliott left out.New Zealand team for tour match Jamie How, Aaron Redmond, Jesse Ryder, Ross Taylor, Brendon McCullum (wk), Daniel Flynn, Daniel Vettori (capt), Kyle Mills, Tim Southee, Iain O’Brien, Chris Martin.

Wednesday confirm George Byers signing

Sheffield Wednesday have confirmed the arrival of George Byers at Hillsborough.

What’s the latest?

In a short statement posted on the Sheffield Wednesday website, the club announced that they have completed the signing of Swansea City central midfielder for an undisclosed fee.

The club went on to state that the 25-year-old will bolster Darren Moore’s options in the middle of the park ahead of the new League One season, while also announcing that he will wear the number 14 shirt for the Owls, before officially welcoming the former Scotland U17 international to the club.

Chansiri masterclass

While many Sheffield Wednesday fans would most likely argue that Dejphon Chansiri is one of the major reasons the club now find themselves in the third tier of English football, it is hard to argue against the owner’s signing of Byers being anything but a masterclass by the Owls owner.

Indeed, over his 35 Championship appearances for Swansea in 2019/20, the £1.08m-rated man scored two goals and created two big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 1.3 shots and making 0.9 key passes per game.

The 25-year-old also impressed in a defensive capacity, making an average of 0.9 interceptions, 1.3 tackles, 0.5 clearances and winning 3.5 duels per match.

These returns saw the £11k-per-week Scot earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.84, ranking him as Steve Cooper’s ninth-best performer in the second tier of English football that season.

As such, if Byers can refind this form for Wednesday in League One next season, not only would the midfielder significantly boost the club’s chances of going on to secure an immediate return to the Championship, but he could well be up with as one of the most influential midfielders in the division come next summer.

This would be an eventuality that would further cement the idea that the signing of the former Watford player is a brilliant capture by Chansiri and his Sheffield Wednesday transfer team, as well as one that will have fans of the club buzzing.

Pundit says Liverpool want to sell Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

Paul Stewart reckons that Liverpool will be looking to sell Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain this summer having failed to live up to expectations at Anfield.

The former Arsenal midfielder has won four trophies during his four years on Merseyside, including both the Champions League and Premier League in consecutive seasons.

However, a serious ACL injury towards the end of his first campaign has seen the £120,000-a-week man kill his chances of making himself a regular in Jurgen Klopp’s team after that.

As a result, the 27-year-old made just Premier League 19 starts across the last three seasons and has already been strongly linked with a move away from Merseyside, with West Ham keen, whilst Borussia Dortmund have also been mentioned as a potential destination for the England midfielder.

Having played 246 minutes in the league last season, it’s obvious that to play more regular first-team football, Oxlade-Chamberlain will likely have to end his four-year spell with the Merseyside club.

And that’s exactly what Stewart exclusively told Football FanCast:

“He never fulfilled his potential that he had at Liverpool, and I think Liverpool will be looking to offload him.”

Leeds United in advanced talks for Klaesson

Leeds United are now in advanced talks to sign Valerenga goalkeeper Kristoffer Klaesson this summer.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent days had suggested that the Whites were eyeing up a move for the 1.89m (6 foot 2) ace as they look to bolster their goalkeeping ranks following the departure of Kiko Casilla on a season-long loan.

Football Insider have now delivered an exciting update on the situation.

They claimed that a Leeds source has revealed: “Klaesson is now the top keeper target and discussions are progressing well over a potential deal. The Premier League outfit have offered a contract to the Valerenga number one and a deal is edging closer.

“Leeds have already applied for a work permit for the youngster, who is not yet a full Norway international. However, he has represented his country all the way through the age groups up to Under-21 level and United are confident of their application being successful.”

Bielsa will love it

Having given the green light for Casilla to join Elche for the upcoming season, Leeds are left short in terms of goalkeeping backup to first-choice shot-stopper Illan Meslier.

In Klaesson, the Whites can go a long way to not only securing a viable rotation option, but also someone who could potentially challenge Meslier for that number one jersey in the years to come, especially given that he’s only 20 years old.

Valerenga sporting director Jørgen Ingebrigtsen has already spoken about the kind of work Victor Orta has put in behind the scenes, saying: “The best clubs, and the best environments, work long-term with player recruitment. There, Victor is one of the brightest in the subject. Leeds arrived on the field in the summer of 2019 and have been very good. We have had a good dialogue with them.

“They obviously saw something of Kristoffer early that they liked, and have been good at updating themselves on developments.”

Not only will Bielsa love that the Whites are acting so decisively in addressing a potential concern in his squad, but Klaesson’s age makes him someone who is a perfect fit for the long-term at Elland Road.

Meanwhile, Leeds could sign their new Pablo Hernandez in this star…
